Do you find yourself with questions about some of the stickier topics in modern life? Do phrases like systemic racism, Black Lives Matter, and toxic masculinity frustrate you? That's good! These are difficult topics, and they aren't easy to break down. But that's exactly what Robin and I (Jon) attempt to do in this series. Ever other week, we bring you in depth discussions about the history, development, applications, and meaning behind these (and other) complicated ideas. The purpose is to help everyone come together on common ground so that we can address and solve these issues together. You can count on their sessions to be informative, well sourced, and easy to listen to. This is a show for anyone who wants to learn, regardless of political ideology. So pull up a chair, get comfy, and pour yourself a drink. Probably stiff, because these aren't easy topics. Welcome to the Fireside.

    “It can't be that easy to misplace classified documents, can it?!” In August 2022, a search turned up some 300 classified documents stored in former President Trump's home Mar a Lago.  In January 2023, outlets began reporting that classified documents had been found at the Penn Biden Center, presumably from Biden's time as Vice President.     We bounced around a variety of topics for this week's episode, from Donald Trump's assertion that we should chuck out the Constitution to The Twitter Files (dun dun dunnn). But right at the last minute, something caught our attention that could spell the END OF AMERICAN DEMOCRACY. (Are you paying attention yet?) If you're a political/legal/electoral nerd like we are, you've probably hear about Moore v. Harper. This Supreme Court case is likely to determine the validity of a concept called “the independent state legislature theory,” which has plagued political conversations since the 2020 election.     In Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization, the U.S. Supreme Court released a decision penned by Justice Samuel Alito which held that the right to an abortion outlined in Roe v Wade under the Due Process clause of the 14th amendment was errantly determined. In the decision, Alito wrote, “the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment… has been held to guarantee some rights that are not mentioned in the Constitution, but any such right must be “deeply rooted in this Nation's history and tradition” and “implicit in the concept of ordered liberty.” Many legal scholars believe that this sets a dangerous precedent for the many rights afforded to Americans under the 14th amendment, and undermines many of the liberties that Americans - conservative and liberal - have come to rely on. Could this be two steps backward on the path to equal treatment and equal protection for all Americans?     Today, we're talking about arguing. Specifically, arguing in bad faith. We've done it; you've done it; and politicians, pundits, and public figures do it all the time. Accusations fly, especially during times of crisis (like after gun massacres) or in election years. But no one ever takes the time to explain what they mean when they accuse someone of arguing in bad faith.  I mean, how are you supposed to recognize these outrageous fallacies if no one will tell you how they work?!  Knowledge is power, people. This invasion has had devastating consequences for the people of Ukraine, which you can read about or watch or listen to on pretty much any media channel that exists right now. It's necessary for the world to see, but it can also be really overwhelming for those of us who don't need another picture of just how ugly humanity can be.  Which is why we're trying to contribute to the coverage by adding context to the headlines.  This invasion has also all but collapsed the Russian economy and sent shockwaves through other economies world wide, in no small part because of sanctions that have been levied against Russia by many other countries and organizations across the globe. In many cases, imposing sanctions seems to be the first response when one world government makes decisions that are not supported by other world governments.     In November 2020, a poll by Monmouth University revealed that 32% of Americans polled believed that Joe Biden was president SOLELY because of voter fraud. That same poll, repeated in January and March, showed that the numbers held strong. Nearly one third of Americans believe that widespread fraud, rather than the will of the people, determined the outcome of our election. Election results in all 50 states - even the most contentious - were certified, official electoral votes were cast and accepted.  The Department of Homeland Security called this the most secure election ever. So what is it that makes so many people believe that the election was a fraud? And is there any indication - after a year of looking now - that fraud was a factor?
