Imaginez une famille du XVIIIe siècle réunie autour d'un étrange remède : une petite boule métallique avalée par un malade… puis récupérée quelques heures plus tard dans ses selles, soigneusement nettoyée, avant d'être réutilisée encore et encore. Cette curieuse invention portait un nom étonnant : la “pilule perpétuelle”.Utilisée entre le XVIIe et le XIXe siècle, cette pilule était censée soulager les douleurs abdominales, les indigestions ou encore “purger” l'organisme. À l'époque, la médecine repose largement sur l'idée qu'il faut évacuer les mauvaises substances du corps. Les médecins pratiquent volontiers les saignées, les vomitifs ou les laxatifs. La pilule perpétuelle s'inscrit parfaitement dans cette logique.Mais contrairement à une pilule classique, celle-ci n'était pas destinée à se dissoudre. Il s'agissait d'une petite bille composée d'antimoine, un métalloïde brillant proche de certains métaux. L'antimoine possède des propriétés toxiques, mais à faible dose, il provoque surtout de puissants effets laxatifs et vomitifs. Avaler cette boule irritait donc le système digestif, accélérant le transit intestinal.Et c'est là que réside l'aspect le plus surprenant : la pilule ressortait intacte. Comme elle ne se dissolvait pas, on pouvait la récupérer après son passage dans l'organisme, la laver… puis la réutiliser à l'infini. D'où son surnom de “pilule perpétuelle”.Certaines familles conservaient la même pilule pendant des générations. Elle devenait presque un objet patrimonial médical. On pouvait la prêter à un voisin, à un ami ou à plusieurs membres d'une même maison. Une seule pilule pouvait ainsi servir des centaines, voire des milliers de fois au cours de son existence.Aujourd'hui, cette pratique paraît évidemment peu hygiénique. Mais elle reflète surtout la médecine de son époque. Les connaissances scientifiques sur les microbes ou la toxicité des métaux étaient encore limitées. Or l'antimoine est loin d'être anodin : à dose élevée, il peut provoquer de graves intoxications, touchant le foie, les reins ou le cœur.D'ailleurs, les autorités médicales ont longtemps hésité à autoriser son usage. En France, l'antimoine fut même interdit à certains moments au XVIe siècle après plusieurs décès. Pourtant, son efficacité apparente comme purgatif lui permit de revenir régulièrement à la mode.La pilule perpétuelle est donc un fascinant témoignage de l'histoire de la médecine : un objet à mi-chemin entre remède, superstition et poison.
