What do political democracy and social hierarchy do to each other? For too long Nepal's Dalits have been marginalized, not just socially, economically, and politically, but from academic accounts of Nepalese society as well. This volume forms part of a welcome new trend, the emergence of Dalit Studies in Nepal, led by a new generation of Dalit scholars.  Nepal's Dalits in Transition (Vajra Books, 2024) covers a wide range of issues concerning Nepal's Dalits and offers a snapshot of the advances that they have made--in education, in politics, in the bureaucracy, economically, and in everyday relations. At the same time the book documents the continuing material disadvantage, inequality, discrimination, both direct and indirect, and consequent mental suffering that Dalits have to face. It also touches on the struggles, hopes, and dilemmas of Dalit activists as they seek to bring about a new social order and a relatively more egalitarian society.  David Gellner is Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at Oxford University. Surnommé par la presse « le gourou de l'Allier », son procès s'ouvre devant le tribunal correctionnel de Cusset en juillet 2023. L'homme était notamment renvoyé devant le tribunal correctionnel pour « abus de faiblesse sur des personnes majeures en état de sujétion psychologique et physique par le biais de techniques graves ayant altéré le jugement de ses victimes ». Dans ce dernier épisode, Maître Valérie Blanchard, avocate spécialiste des mouvements sectaires et présidente du Centre de Cartographie et d'Études des Croyances, prendra la parole. Très vite, David devient le gourou spirituel d'une petite communauté dans l'Allier, imposant des rituels particulièrement malsains.  Des rituels malsains Clément et Léo, deux jeunes étudiants, ont rencontré David Nègre par le biais de l'un de ses blogs sur la mythologie nordique. Léo, tout comme Clément et Charlotte, une autre adepte, partage un profil similaire : tous sont un peu perdus, parfois dépressifs et fragilisés par des traumatismes profonds. Pensant avoir trouvé un véritable sens à leur existence grâce à David, leur formation prend rapidement une tournure étrange. Alcool et cocaïne sont omniprésents dans les fêtes, et les adeptes sont victimes de sévices. Ancien étudiant en philosophie, Léo a vécu dans un château avec sa compagne Sarah. Le couple partageait le château avec quatre autres personnes, dont David Nègre. Au fil des mois, l'atmosphère s'est détériorée sous l'influence de ce gourou spirituel. Léo a demandé à Sarah de partir, et ensuite, il a été violemment agressé et abandonné au château, les autres locataires ayant volé sa voiture en partant. Léo accuse David d'abus de faiblesse, de violences volontaires aggravées et d'incitation à la consommation de stupéfiants.
