This recording is a recording of the meaning of the Advent Wreath used during the season of Advent. To hear the sermon preached at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mankato, Minnesota on December 7, 2025, go to our YouTube Channel. Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” John 8:12   The Prophecy Candle is the 1st candle lit the first week in Advent.  It is symbolic of the long years of waiting during which the prophets, inspired of God, kept alive the hope that the Son of God was coming to redeem His people from their sins. "Therefore... rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 1:13) The Bethlehem Candle is the 2nd candle lit.  It symbolizes the peace that comes to sinners and the preparations God made for the coming of the world's Savior. The prophecy in Micah 5:2 that foretold Jesus' birthplace at Bethlehem may seem to be a minor revelation, but it shows how God prepared even the least detail for the coming of Christ. “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.” (Micah 5:2) The Shepherds' Candle is the 3rd candle lit and reminds us of our responsibility to share the Savior and His promises. The shepherds left their task and went with haste to see the Christ-child; then they returned to joyfully tell others about the good news of the Savior. “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people." ...  Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. (Luke 2:11,17) The Angels' Candle is lit the 4th week of Advent.  It reminds us of the activity of the angels before and after Jesus' birth, bearing messages, ministering, protecting, praising; they will be with Jesus at His final coming on Judgment Day, to gather the nations. "All the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God" (Revelation 7:11) The Christ Candle is the white candle in the center, and is lit on Christmas Eve. It signals that He Who is the Light of the world has been born.   The light these candles put forth seems small;  so does the gospel at times.  But to those in lonely darkness, it is the powerful light which shows the way to Heaven.

Week 2 | The King Has Come: Peace

"Christmas is DYNOMITE"

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 8, 2025 49:23

In this stirring and deeply encouraging Advent message, Pastor Karl continues the series The King Has Come with a raw and life-giving exploration of the second great gift Jesus brings: peace.Turning to the familiar yet profound scene in Luke 2:8–20, Pastor Karl invites us into the midnight terror of ordinary shepherds—suddenly confronted by the blinding glory of God—and shows how the very first words from heaven that night were not “Merry Christmas,” but “Fear not.” That first Christmas did not begin with sentimental calm; it began with paralyzing, mega-fear. And right there, in the middle of stacked-on-stacked fear, the angel announced good news of great joy: a Savior has been born who is Christ the Lord, the Prince of Peace. With pastoral tenderness and unflinching honesty, Pastor Karl unmasks fear as the mortal enemy of peace—how it magnifies threats, shrinks our view of God, and paints our future in colors darker than God ever intended. Yet the gospel is stronger: peace is not the absence of trouble but the presence of a Person. Peace is not something Jesus gives; peace is who Jesus is—and He gives Himself.Through the shepherds' journey from terror to testimony, we're given clear, scriptural paths out of fear and into the unshakable peace of Christ: speaking God's truth over fear's lies, refusing to agree with the spirit of fear, drawing near to Jesus through spiritual disciplines, and taking bold steps of obedience that move us against comfort and toward surrender. This is a word for everyone whose heart has been ruled by anxiety, worst-case scenarios, or the quiet fears that steal joy—especially in this season. A tender yet urgent call to stop trusting the unknown future to our own control and start trusting it to the known God who entered our fear as a baby in a manger.Because the King has come, fear does not get the final word. Peace does. And when the Prince of Peace takes over a life, what spills out is no longer fear—but praise, testimony, and unshakable confidence in the goodness of God.Essential listening for anyone who longs to trade fear for the peace that passes all understanding this Christmas.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 9:00am & 10:30am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

Advent is more than a countdown to Christmas—it’s a season of spiritual preparation, reflection, and anticipation for the coming of Jesus. Isaiah 9:6 reminds us of the promise of a Savior, calling Him Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. By intentionally preparing our hearts and homes, we can embrace the joy, hope, and light of Christ, creating meaningful family traditions that honor His arrival and cultivate a posture of worship. Highlights Advent is derived from the Latin word for “coming” and lasts four weeks, focusing on Christ’s first and second comings. Attend special Advent services to reflect, pray, and celebrate the birth of Jesus. Use an Advent calendar to daily engage with Scripture, small treats, or family moments that highlight Christ’s arrival. Light an Advent wreath weekly to symbolize expectation, reflection, and Christ as the light of the world (John 8:12). Create visual reminders like Advent chains or prepare a manger to help children and families anticipate Christ’s birth. Share the story of Jesus with others each week, following the example of the shepherds in Luke 2:17-18. Advent encourages both personal reflection and communal celebration, fostering gratitude, faith, and joyful expectation. Wrap up stories for loved ones, tuck a book into your own nightstand, and join us in celebrating the wonder of giving this Christmas! Full Transcript Below: Preparing Our Hearts and Homes for Advent By Lynette Kittle Bible Reading: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace—Isaiah 9:6 Preparing a home for the arrival of a new baby is a busy time, full of choosing clothes, bedding, accessories, and more. It’s an exciting time of getting everything ready and waiting for the day to come. It’s a time when families and friends come together to help prepare and celebrate the coming birth. As well, during the Advent season, we can remember, prepare, and celebrate anew the coming of Jesus as a newborn baby into our world. Some Christians may ask, what is Advent? Even though I grew up as a pastor’s daughter, we didn’t really emphasize Advent; it was something celebrated in more liturgical churches like Catholic, Anglican, and Lutheran, so we didn’t really learn or practice the observance growing up. The word Advent is derived from the Latin word “coming” and is a time of anticipation, prayer, spiritual reflection, and preparation for the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day. Advent traditionally starts four weeks before Christmas, beginning on the Sunday closest to November 30 and ending on Christmas Eve. Yet, it’s a beautiful time of preparation, lasting four weeks, leading up to the celebration of Jesus’ first coming at Christmas in the birth of our Messiah, and also the anticipation of His second coming and return to earth, yet to occur. 6 Meaningful Ways to Prepare for and Celebrate Advent The following are six traditional ways to prepare our hearts to celebrate Advent. Attend special Advent services. Some churches and denominations offer Advent services leading up to Christmas, where attendees join together to prepare their hearts for Christ’s birth with Scripture reading, an Advent message, songs, and prayers. Follow an Advent Calendar. Leading up to Christmas day, as a family, go through an Advent calendar, which offers 24 or 25 doors to open, each holding a small surprise, toy, candy, or Bible verse inside to help us focus on, prepare, and celebrate each day of Advent. Opening each door helps to teach us about Christ’s coming, along with creating warm family moments and memories to last for years to come. Light an Advent Wreath. An Advent wreath is traditionally made out of evergreens, but can come in various forms, such as wooden or plastic, holding four candles to represent the four weeks leading up to Advent, lighting one candle each Sunday. Traditionally, because purple represents royalty, the candles are usually three purple and one pink candle. Lighting the wreath offers a time for expectation and reflection, where we can look forward to Christ’s coming and rejoice because Jesus is the light of the world. As John 8:12 records, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” Create an Advent chain. As a visual countdown to Advent, young children may especially enjoy making an Advent chain, linking together colorful pieces of paper to represent each day leading up to Advent. Every day, remove a link until Christmas Day. Prepare a manger. Some families construct a small manger to represent preparing a place for the coming Christ, lining it each day with pieces of straw in preparation. As Luke 2:7 reminds us, “And she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped Him in cloths and placed Him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.” Share Jesus. Each week of Advent, tell someone about celebrating it and what it means to all of us. Like the shepherds told others about Jesus’ birth in Luke 2:17-18, tell those we know about His coming. “When they had seen Him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.” Intersecting Faith & Life: If you grew up Christian, but unaware of celebrating Advent, take some time to prayerfully consider if you and your family would like to participate this coming year in one or more of the traditions.  The season of Advent is rich in reminders of the true meaning of the coming of Christ. The ancient hymns of Advent, such as “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”, and “O Come, Divine Messiah,”  are some of the most beautiful that we have, and  customs such as the lighting of the candles of the Advent Wreath are memorable expressions of our faith, and of the hope in the midst of struggle which allows us to flourish joyfully as disciples of Jesus, whose coming we celebrate at Christmas, and prepare for in Advent. This is not only a joyful, but also a penitential season since,  if we are honest with ourselves, we must admit that we are not really ready to meet the Lord who comes.

The season of Advent is a time of joyful preparation for Our Lord's Incarnation. The four candles on the Advent Wreath remind us both of our one brief time of preparation, but also of the much longer period chronicled in the Old Testament. Yet as we learn from that time in history, preparing for the Savior's coming is not tantamount to receiving Him.

This blogcast explores “Embracing Advent" written by Helena Romano and read by Amy CardinIn this blog post, Helena shares how the Advent season stands apart from Christmas and helps prepare our hearts and souls for the coming of Christ and this period of preparation can even lend itself to a more exciting Christmas. When we experience Advent in this way, the anticipation for Christmas builds with each passing week. As Christmas Day draws closer, we start baking and freezing the Christmas cookies to be eaten during Christmastide and to be given as gifts at Christmas parties. I take time to plan out special activities for us to do during the twelve days of Christmas, or special meals I know everyone will enjoy during that time. We pray the O Antiphons. We make or buy gifts for our loved ones, and we talk about how giving gifts to our loved ones is a reflection of the great gift of Jesus, who was given to us on Christmas Day. In this way, when we finally decorate the house on Christmas Eve, we are all practically bouncing with excitement—and not just about presents, but about the miracle of Christ's birth. Our children's—and our own—sense of wonder is bolstered and preserved by our not celebrating too early. By steeping ourselves in the history of the first Christmas and by maintaining that same sense of watchful hoping and waiting, we can more fully appreciate the wonder of the arrival of the promised Messiah. Author:Helena Romano is an Editing Associate for the Catholic Apostolate Center. Seasons By the Well: Advent and Lent Reflection and Meditation

On this 24th day of Advent we light the 4th candle of the Advent Wreath, representing Love. This Christmas Eve we reflect on the ultimate love of God that led Him to send His only Son for us. Our reading is inspired by Luke 2:10-11. If you have time, dedicate a few minutes to read the entire Chapter 24 of the Book of Luke today, the last Chapter. If you have read a chapter each day, you'll find that by today, you'll have traversed the entire gospel according to Luke, accompanying Jesus on the remarkable journey of his life. As we light the 3rd candle on our Advent Wreath, we start the week reflecting on the joy and anticipation felt by the shepherds who journeyed to see Jesus in Bethlehem. This Advent, let us gather with intention, embracing these ancient narratives not as tales of dread but as prompts for introspection and growth. Together, in our sacred space, we shall seek out the divine amidst the shadows and find within ourselves the ember of transformative hope. The season of Advent is a time  of real significant time in the church. This time marks the beginning of a new liturgical year.  It's a time of preparation. It's a time of anticipation as we await the celebration of the birth of Jesus. The word advent comes from the Latin word "adventus", which means coming or arrival. During this sacred time, we reflect on the coming of Christ, his presence in our lives today, and also his promise to return.   Produced, Edited and mixed by Paul R.
