You know when that incredibly divisive Ballerina Farm article by Megan Agnew for The Times created such a social media frenzy, we would have a lot to say about the trad wife of it all. This is particularly interesting because it's the first time in recent memory that a trad wife has broken the fourth wall. Chiming in is guest host Rachel, who has become our resident influencer expert, as we break down all the notable moments in the interview. We debate whether Hannah Neeleman actually needs your sympathy, why influencing seems to have a chokehold on Mormon wives (and how they are weaponized to spread alt-right propaganda!), give our hot takes, and so much more. On Day 2 of my recent pilgrimage to Las Vegas for the Dead & Company shows at Sphere, I sit down with the person that I have proudly seen the most concerts with over the years, fellow Canterbury School alum and lifelong Deadhead, Mr. Andrew “Garv” Hammer. Garv and I take a walk down memory lane revisiting life at boarding school, exploring the bonds that the class of ‘86 (my crew) and the class of ‘85 (his crew, affectionately known as The Bakers Dozen) had back in the day. Having the memory of an elephant, Garv brings us back to the highlights of his 100+ concerts with incredible clarity and amazing detail. We wrap up by diving into the brotherhood known as the Gentlemens Quarterly, aka the “GQ”, the unique institution that continues to stand the test of time after 23 years and over 90 consecutive outings. Nick is joined by Daily Mirror writer David Yates to discuss the latest news and events from around the racing world. They lead with the news that the Grand National has received an entry of just 31 horses from British trainers. In a bid to work out why, and what this means for the sport as a whole, Nick talks to BHA Head of Jump Handicapping Martin Greenwood, who has some strong words on the subject. Among other topics discussed are the new French whip rules, the end to the "bedding in" period in the UK, and Gordon Elliott's £1000 medication fine. Nick is at Huntingdon for the Sidney Banks hurdle, which Nick and Dave preview, while, having returned last night from Riyadh, Nick brings back news from Emblem Road's connections and a surprise guest who has travelled the world working in the sport. Elsewhere, trainer Chris Gordon looks ahead to his two runners in Saturday's Betfair Hurdle.

Like many, I love my technology; until I don't. The other night, every so often, I heard a faint chiming sound in my office. I'm sure it came from some electrical equipment, but I have no idea what or where it was. I'm guessing it could have been an alert for some message or perhaps even a notification that a battery was dying. The chime finally stopped, but I still have no clue what caused it... This week we start our conversation we got while attending the Whip Mix (https://www.whipmix.com/) Digital Forum (https://www.whipmix.com/special-events/2022-digital-forum/) back in October. This amazing yearly event brought so many great speakers and attendees that gave us an opportunity to talk to so many wonderful people in our industry. There is nothing like good ol' face-to-face recording. First up is the Vice President of Zubler USA (https://zublerusa.com/), Chris Wilson. Chris talks about a lot of the items that Zubler sells, but really educates us all the different ovens in a lab and what makes a good oven good. Chiming in is Blake Barksdale from Barksdale Dental Lab (https://barksdaledentallab.com/) (who was on episode 204) (https://www.voicesfromthebench.com/204) to give the perspective of actual real life lab use of a lot of the Zubler USA equipment. Then we are joined by two amazing small lab owners that found friendship within their successes. Sandra Ramsey, owner of Great Crowns and Smiles (https://www.gcsdentallab.com/), talks about her path to owning a lab in Louisville and Bob Iuliano, owner of Adirondack Dental Ceramics in upstate New York, talks about his own path. Together the talk about running a lab in today's market and how having each other to talk to has made them both better. Whip Mix (https://www.whipmix.com/) is thrilled to announce their most recent addition to their milling product line. Introducing the DWX-53DC (https://www.whipmix.com/products/roland-dgshape-dwx-53dc-dental-mill/) from DGSHAPE. This powerful mill satisfies your 'NEED FOR SPEED'. George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam AKA Boy Meets Girl have given 'How WIll I Know' a bubbly new twist in celebration of Whitney Houston's incredible career - a story that is being told in the forthcoming biopic 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody' - released globally in cinemas on 21 December. This brand new mix will be available as one of the bonus tracks on the vinyl release of the 2021 EP 'Five' released under their famous moniker Boy Meets Girl. The EP is unmistakably THEM, and on the B side, it includes instrumental and alternate mixes of the tracks. Their prolific style produced some of the biggest global hits ever, including Boy Meets Girl's #1 song 'Waiting For A Star To Fall' and of course Whitney's #1 hits 'How Will I Know' and 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)'. Chiming throughout, it's this sound that made them one of the most sought after songwriting duos of the 80s and 90s.George and Shannon's influence on Whitney's career cannot be understated. Her 1995 release 'How Will I Know' written by the duo, was the song that sent Whitney Houston's career stratospheric and helped make her the global superstar that we know and love today. Then in 1997, when her star could not rise any higher, or so it was thought, a second song written by George and Shannon was released - 'I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)' - hitting the top of the charts all over the world, it ripped up dance floors, sent kitchen discos into overdrive and this song, alongside 'How Will I Know' and Dolly Parton's 'I Will Always Love You' - unquestionably became tracks that are synonymous with Whitney's career and her incredible voice. In their own words, George and Shannon share the incredible lives of these tracks and how they felt when they first saw the Whitney biopic..."'How Will I Know' was written in our funky little Venice, California garage, roughly 1984. Written for Janet Jackson (she passed on it as she was about to release her groundbreaking Control album), Brenda Andrews at Irving Music played the demo for A&R icon Gerry Griffith who was songhunting for a "new young singer". Gerry convinced Clive Davis, and Clive chose the song as one of the featured tracks for Whitney's first album; he chose as producer Narada Michael Walden. Narada made significant musical additions to the song and took it to new heights with his punchy bright production. Soon after, a phone call came from friends Alan and Preston Glass, in the studio with Narada after Whitney's vocal session. "You gotta hear this!", and they held the phone up to the speakers and blasted the opening bars of 'How Will I Know'... I think we about fell on the floor! The track and Whitney's voice were SO powerful. It was one of the great moments, and still is a thrill to hear our song over the sound system in a grocery store or being sung by generations of contestants on American Idol or The Voice, and we are forever grateful to Fate for aligning so perfectly!"As a follow up, Clive requested that we write another song for Whitney's second album. 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)' was the song that emerged. By that time, of course we understood the soulful and joyous impact of Whitney's voice and were better able to tailor something for her. Clive liked the demo straight off, and again Narada was the producer. And Whitney the unmatchable singer, so we knew everything was in the best hands. It's hard to explain the feeling of having written such time-tested hits, because once a song leaves the studio and goes out into the world, it belongs to the performer and the listeners and fans; and you as songwriter have to let go. If you're lucky, and we were, it has a life and momentum all its own as it rolls through the world becoming more" Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Thieves are back in Europe with a look at the wealth of great value wines available in Portugal. A country that has been able to preserve and protect a great number of indigenous grape varieties, Portugal is home to a wealth of stunning old vineyard sites owned by a multitude of small growers. How safeguarding traditions, vineyards and distinctive regional character is achieved, is what Sara and John would like to know more about but they have a hunch that large-volume producers have a role to play.In this episode, they delve into topics such as the incentivization of growers from large producers, as well the preservation of land under vine in Portugal, which has been on a steady decline since 2007, like much of Europe. Within the framework of land conservation, they will also discuss the preservation of rare and indigenous grape varieties in Portugal. There are a few countries in the world, such as the Republic of Georgia, Greece, Italy and Portugal where very rare indigenous wine grapes are found. In fact, Portugal has a surface area six times smaller than France (551,500 km²), has over 250 varieties. This gives Portugal (92,120 km²) the highest density of indigenous wine grapes in the world, and many are on the verge of extinction. We'll find out what large wine companies can do to help protect and preserve grape varieties that are at risk such as Azal, Codega do Larinho, Sousao, Tinta Grossa, and the uber rare Jampal. Also up for discussion is how climate change has affected large scale grape farming in Portugal. Hit harder than most wine regions by rising temperatures and drought, Portugal is emerging as a global leader in responding to the climate threat. You'll find out what, if any environmental initiatives guests of leading brands use and how have these practices had an impact on the growers they employ or other wineries in the region. AND finally, we'll hear about the evolution of export practices.Joining the discussion is Martim Guedes, the Co-CEO of Aveleda (along with Antonio Guedes). Martim's great-great grandfather Manoel Pedro Guedes founded Quinta da Aveleda 150 years ago. Manoel was a pioneer in the region helping the wines of Vinho Verde to achieve international recognition and brought viticultural savoir-faire from Bordeaux to the region helping to improve quality production. The company has since expanded its presence outside of Minho to Douro, Bairrada and Algarve and exports to more than 70 countries. The Thieves are also pleased to welcome Luís Almada to the program who is the Executive Board Member of Casa Santos Lima and Vicente Leite Faria. Luís has a Masters of Wine Business from the University of Adelaide and then began working with Casa Santos Lima 9 years ago. Casa Santos Lima is a family owned company who makes wine in Lisboa, Algarve, Alentejo, Vinho Verde and the Douro, exporting 90% of its total production to more than 50 countries in all 5 continents. It is the largest single producer of Vinho Regional Lisboa (responsible for the production of more than 50% of all the certified wine in the Lisboa region) and DOC Alenquer. Chiming in as well is Pedro da Fonseca, the managing partner of Vicente Leite Faria in the Douro. Born in Portugal but grew up in Canada, Pedro studied in Toronto at York University before receiving is Master's degree from Harvard and is currently a PhD candidate at the London Metropolitan University. Pedro has a sincere love for wines of his mother country and its proliferation abroad. Join John and Sara for an invigorating discussion on the role of leading brands safeguarding land, grapes and tradition in Portugal. This episode is made in partnership with ViniPortugal.

Much like last time, these are the "songs we found interesting" of 2022, although Claudia wants you to know Key's BAD LOVE is the track of the year. Part of the SHINee comeback that we didn't mention but is worth knowing about: their take on the ending fairy trend, a trend in which the camera lingers on a single group member at the end of a performance, usually an opportunity for them to show off for the camera. You should check out the Don't Call Me/Atlantis B-sides. Try CØDE to start. You can find references to the fact that Don't Call Me was going to be a BoA song, but the only writeup in English I could find comes from allkpop. (CL: I wouldn't have linked to AKP if literally anyone else had written it up.) Don't Call Me relay dance is worth 4m of your time (though probably after you watch the MV proper) To reiterate: Don't Call Me (album) was released Feb 2021, Atlantis was released in April, Taemin's Advice came out in May, Superstar (Japanese EP) in late June, and Taemin enlisted on May 31. Here's posters detailing the contents of all four physical versions for BAD LOVE: Space Ray Gun, Box Set, Booklet, and (cassette) Tape. There's an interesting essay/interview with Key on Allure on being a pop star at 30. Minho - Heartbreak Hahahaha actually DICE is out now and it's good and you should listen to it! It's in the playlist, but Sunmi did an interview about the song Borderline. Because I can, here's K-Food Party again. NCT Dream's (2022) song Glitch Mode also takes place in the coolest Best Buy in kpop so it's got that going for it too. And now aespa are at Coachella too! As their first live performance since debut! Here's Spotify's hyperpop playlist. Justice for Hendery Susan Sontag, Notes on Camp (1964). Other definitions of camp are available. really if you must watch My Universe you can definitely find it yourself Did we mention Weeekly - After School? Well, it's in the playlist, go check it out. First, listen to at least the end of the chorus in Apink's Dilemma. This was about my reaction the first time. Check out Brave Girls - Thank You! Chiming in from the future: while BIGBANG's comeback, Still Life managed to top the Korean charts, fan reception seems to be that this is a thinly veiled goodbye song, especially given T.O.P.'s departure from YG Entertainment (although he remains a part of the group). NCT Hollywood, announced in May 2021. We've not heard anything since. Epik High - Rosario. The concert was fun! And I was wrong - it wasn't a stopover for San Francisco, but for Coachella. It's time to discuss another book arbitrarily banned or challenged by aggrieved parents! This time it's Paul Zindel's ode to two teens who befriend a lonely widower and (maybe? likely?) wind up contributing to his untimely death.Chiming in on this episode are listeners Victoria, Brian and Tea, Books & Chocolate who help us unpack the book's confronting ending, the complicated family dynamics and why readers may struggle to get into the classic prose. Floyd Mayweather answers Logan Paul claims, talks legacy, toughest opponent and relationships. The night before Super Bowl Sunday and the Champ himself sits down with Channing, Fred and Ryan to talk about life's pivots and opens up about his journey of becoming who he is today. Floyd attributes his success to making his dad proud and said one thing always at the forefront of his mind was to never let his father down. In boxing and in life, having the right people around you is everything and being able to put trust in himself has allowed him to excel in all areas. Being a father and watching his children grow and evolve is his biggest worry because of how life is so different than it was and it's not the same as it was for him as it is for them. Having many titles and accolades around the world, Floyd's most cherished name to go by today is "paw paw" and being a grandfather to KJ, the son of Iyanna Mayweather and rapper NBA Youngboy, is one of his greatest joys. Describing his journey of working from the ground up, putting in his own blood, sweat and tears...Floyd's approach paved the way for other athletes and entertainers to be their own boss and always wanted to be on a different path as he transitioned from boxer to promoter to iconic businessman. Quieting the accusations that the wealthy athlete owes Logan Paul money from their exhibition, Floyd explains that these types of claims come with the territory and that it's not money he personally owes to Logan but money that still comes in on the backend of PPV fights. He says that certain people should be appreciative of their biggest payday they had in life and be patient. Ryan starts explaining his excitement with his row one flight accommodations as Floyd interrupts asking what A1 means and confused that boarding passes are now on phone admittingly saying it's been almost 20 years since he has flown commercial. When Channing asks how he moves about the world, Floyd says let me show you- he grabs his phone and calls his pilot who is on stand by and ready to fly on a moment's notice. Chiming in on Floyd's infamous saying, having one is closer to having none, Ryan and Channing start digging in and ask about the women and at what point will Floyd be able to settle down and want to do "old man" stuff....the champ laughs it off and says what's for everybody else may not be for him. Before closing out the show, Ryan asks Floyd who his toughest opponent in the ring was and as a surprise to some, Floyd answers long time rival Manny Pacquiao who he defeated 10-2 in the ring. Time magazine has named Elon Musk as its 2021 “Person of the Year,” calling him “the man who aspires to save our planet and get us a new one to inhabit.” Oh, please. This is the man who downplayed the pandemic — predicting in March 2020 that there would be “probably close to zero new cases” in the United States by the end of April, and that “the coronavirus panic is dumb.” As infections surged, he called quarantine measures “fascist” and demanded that officials return people's “freedom.” He then kept his Tesla plant open in defiance of public health orders, with the result that over a hundred Tesla workers contracted COVID. They said the company covered up the outbreak. Then he fired workers after telling them they could take unpaid time off if they didn't feel safe coming to work. This is the man who, when the epidemic plunged millions of Americans into near poverty, railed against coronavirus relief packages — claiming government aid wasn't “in the best interests of the people.” Yet he's been benefiting from government aid for years. He got a cool $465 million low-interest loan from the Department of Energy in 2010 to help kickstart Tesla. His Nevada Gigafactory was launched with the promise of $1.3 billion in tax breaks over two decades. And so on. This is also the man who threatened to rescind his employees' stock options if they unionized. He broke 11 other labor laws by harassing pro-union employees. A court ruled that Musk and other company executives illegally sabotaged employee efforts to form a union -- harassing workers, passing out union pamphlets in the parking lot, banning employees from wearing pro-union T-shirts and buttons, repeatedly interrogating union organizers and eventually firing one of them, and distributing anti-union messages in tweets from Musk himself. Since 2010, he's had at least 43 workers' rights violations filed against his company.Meanwhile, six women who worked for Musk's Tesla are suing the carmaker for alleged sexual harassment and discrimination, adding to two similar suits filed in the past month. Meanwhile, Musk's SpaceX employees are speaking out about what they describe as a culture of harassment at the rocket company. He's the richest person in the world who argues billionaires shouldn't pay more taxes. He admits to taking no salary or bonus (he lives off his shares of stock) so pays little or no income tax. When Democrats proposed a billionaire tax he warned Americans that “eventually they run out of other people's money and then they come for you.” When Bernie Sanders said the extremely wealthy should pay their fair share, he responded “I keep forgetting that you're still alive.” This is Time Magazine's person of the year? Look, I get it. America worships great wealth. It loves entrepreneurs. It celebrates mavericks. It extols rule-breakers. It reveres people who don't give a rat's ass. And it lauds ego-manics who combine all these qualities (it has even elected one President). But was it really necessary for Time Magazine to honor one of them?So here's this week's question: If it were up to you, who would you select as person of the year? As usual, I'll chime in around 10 am PT, 1 pm ET.***Chiming in now (and will as well in the comments): Time Magazine hasn't always risen to a standard that most of us would consider “honorable” in naming their “Person of the Year,” considering that the magazine has in past years anointed Adolf Hitler and Donald Trump. As several of you point out, Time has never been interested in the definition of honor. It just wants to sell more copies and attract more eyeballs. But Time's peculiar annual rite does at least give us an opportunity to examine the important difference between notoriety and honor by asking ourselves who really deserves to be honored in these trying times. Already today, many of you have offered some superb examples.Understandably, most of you want to honor politicians. I can tell you from personal experience that the world of politics is a hard one. The past year has been especially grueling. The honorable ones deserve our gratitude. I agree with Oscar that Liz Cheney deserves a nod (although her normal politics are to the right of Attila). With great courage and determination, she has shown her loyalty to the American system of government — in sharp contrast with most of her Republican colleagues in the House and Senate. (I'd add Adam Kinzinger here as well.) Joan and several others nominate Nancy Pelosi, who I think is hugely deserving. Pelosi is probably the most gifted politician of our era. She has navigated America's perilous political currents with deftness and calm. Some of you have put forward Joe Biden, and I can understand why. He has demonstrated steadfastness and resilience during this Republican chaos — although in coming months I hope Biden will invest more of his time and energy in securing voting rights, and protecting American democracy (which means getting rid of the filibuster or at least carving out a voting rights exception).A few of you have nominated Stacey Abrams, who hopefully will be the next governor of Georgia, and whose extraordinary gifts as a political organizer deserve our abiding gratitude.Mary Ann suggests Elizabeth Warren, Katie Porter, and the Squad – all of whom continue to display remarkable courage and tenacity. As long as we're talking about courage and tenacity, let's add Bernie Sanders to the honors list. All these people on the front lines of this perilous period of American politics deserve to be honored, and I could add several more. But when thinking about the past year, it seems to me that the people who deserve the greatest honors are those who have been on the front lines of the pandemic and the economy – nurses, hospital orderlies, emergency-room doctors, warehouse workers, meatpacking workers, delivery workers, teachers, firefighters, and all others whose work has been essential. Many of them have risked their lives so the rest of us could survive this past year (and the year before). Many are paid little and work long hours in poor working conditions. Few get the respect they deserve. (Some are now on strike, for good reason.) My brother-in-law and sister-in-law are nurses. I've been astonished and humbled by what they've seen and done. Their care and sacrifice -- and that of hundreds of thousands of people like them -- are in sharp contrast to the bombastic selfishness and mean-spiritedness of the Donald Trumps, Elon Musks, Mitch McConnells, Joe Manchins, Tucker Carlsons, and Marjorie Taylor Greenes who dominate the national stage. Such megalomaniacs too often blind us to the great good that the vast number of unsung heroes continue to do. So my person of the year is the worker on the front lines. Let us not only honor him or her with our words in this forum, but also express our gratitude directly to them whenever we can, and stand in solidarity with their efforts to get better pay and working conditions. Gabe still hates Ooo-we-nay, and hopes he went down with the Death Star. What did Darth Vader actually start ... Kylo Ren has no f*cking clue. Chiming in with Panic at the Disco, the weirdest set up to a love story that never went anywhere. JJ Abrams took the check and went out with middle fingers up. BB8 can go on silent mode but then he sounds like a roomba, the vision scene was really well done. That saber has really bad karma, the Nazi Germany references are really on the nose, Rey would not survive long in an 80's horror movie, questions being asked that don't get answered. Plot twist, it was Maz Kanata the whole time!! We definitely agree who the best character is. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nerdpostpodcast/support
MaryEllen brings a ton of energy to sharing her story of 6 summers in the book business. Chiming in from Vietnam, she talks about being recruited as a High School Junior (!!). With a unique journey of having 4 of her siblings sell, you'll be surprised to hear that even their adult mother joined the fray after her kids sold! (Some cousins were involved too; talk about family antics!) Tune in for a shorter, fun-filled episode

The Duluth visit by President Trump while he is in the midst of the immigration controversy is getting people talking. Why can't people be more cordial? Both sides are too extreme at the end, we need more people in the middle.
