You have an enemy the devil himself. And he prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. He is out to steal, kill and destroy This is a terrifying truth. But you are not without hope. Peter tells you that you can resist him by standing firm in your faith. Now, notice Peter didn't tell you to go to battle with this foe. He said to stand firm in your faith; your faith in Jesus Christ. Why? Because he is your living hope alive and living in you. As John wrote: greater is he that is in you, than he who is in the world. The enemy is on the prowl. He will launch his accusations against you. But when he does, remember, you have a Savior, Jesus Christ himself.
As John wraps everything up, he circles back around to leave us with the same big idea he's been communicating throughout the entire letter: it's all about Jesus. John repeating himself could be humorously blamed on his age, but the reality is you and I are pretty good at forgetting things, and we could use the reminder. This week on the podcast we have three of the best leaders in market today joining us to discuss how leadership in the current culture has changed and how leaders can turn the tide for the better. Our conversation today is between John C. Maxwell, Mark Cole, and Jeff Henderson, author of the book, Know What You're FOR: A Growth Strategy for Work, an Even Better Strategy for Life. As John says in the episode, there's never been a time when division has been so prevalent amongst leaders and organizations. That's why the message of FOR is so important right now. In this discussion, you'll learn how your organization or business can serve people, and how leaders and teams can come together to make a true difference in the culture and the world. Our BONUS resource for this episode is the “Know What You're FOR Worksheet,” which includes fill-in-the-blank notes from John's teaching. There are some images so powerful they can never be forgotten. That was my experience of a famous photograph of the late Princess Diana of Wales. At first glance, the captured scene looks mundane: smiling warmly, the princess is shaking the hand of an unidentified man. But it's the photograph's story that makes it remarkable. On April 19, 1987, when Princess Diana visited London Middlesex Hospital, the United Kingdom was engulfed in a wave of panic as it confronted the AIDS epidemic. Not knowing how the disease—which often killed with terrifying speed—was spread, the public at times treated AIDS victims like social pariahs. So it was a stunning moment when Diana, with ungloved hands and a genuine smile, calmly shook an AIDS patient's hand that day. That image of respect and kindness would move the world to treat victims of the disease with similar mercy and compassion. The picture reminds me of something I often forget: that freely and generously offering the love of Jesus to others is always worth it, no matter the risk. As John reminded early believers in Christ, to let love wither or hide in the face of our fear is really to live “in death” (1 John 3:14). And to love freely and unafraid, filled and empowered with the Spirit’s self-giving love, is to experience resurrection life in all its fullness (vv. 14, 16).
In this sequel set eleven years after "The Terminator," young John Connor (Edward Furlong), the key to civilization's victory over a future robot uprising, is the target of the shape-shifting T-1000 (Robert Patrick), a Terminator sent from the future to kill him. Another Terminator, the revamped T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger), has been sent back to protect the boy. As John and his mother (Linda Hamilton) go on the run with the T-800, the boy forms an unexpected bond with the robot. Told ya I'd be back! And back with a BIG one from the ‘90s! Ah-nuld back for his 2nd time as the dreaded Terminator, also starring the shredded AF Linda Hamilton! Remember when movies has to ACTUALLY film their scenes vs. just leaving it all to green screen/post editing? Was anyone expecting Arnold Schwarzenegger to be the HERO the 2nd time around?? Even though I know it's essentially a shelter from the rain, there's still a special place in my heart for the building in which I heard God's word as a youth, and was married as an adult. Our Christian churches are often consecrated to set them apart for a noble use, but ultimately, the place we meet with God is not a physical building, but it's in Christ Jesus, who is “the living cornerstone of God's temple” (1 Peter 2:4). As John wrote in his Gospel, “when Jesus said, ‘this temple', he meant his own body.” (John 2:21). Galatians 5:5-6 ESV 5 For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love. FAITH WORKING THROUGH LOVE. The Judaizers may claim that to be righteous is by doing the circumcision or law. In contrast, true believers do rest on what Christ has done through the working of the Spirit. By faith, upon the Spirit's working we obtain the righteousness. This righteousness is a gift of God in Christ. Paul said, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”[2 Cor 5:21] What should we do in response to the gift of salvation we received in Christ? For this, John has written, “We love because He first loved us.” [1 John 4:19] Let us immerse ourselves in the love of God. Should we understand it more, behold it always, think about it all the time, we would be ever thankful for it. Consequently, our obedience to Him will be effortless and natural. As John writes, “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.”[1 John 5:3] Let us not be tied up to any outward religion whatsoever, for Christ has freed us from this. Rather, Let us express our true faith express through loving others. This is the only thing that counts before God. Let us demonstrate our true faith by taking pleasure in loving others. -------------------- Visit and FOLLOW Gospel Light Filipino on YouTube and Facebook
Verse sixteen is the favorite verse of many Christians, and rightly so. John, in full consistency with his announced purpose in writing his account of the Gospel, is declaring that Jesus is not a tribal Redeemer, but a worldwide Redeemer. As John will go on to demonstrate, Jesus is the Savior for elite Jews, example being Nicodemus, He is also the Savior for Samaritans, example being the prostitute at the well.
I speak with the CEO of Toronto Regional Real Estate Board, the largest REALTOR Association as well as the largest single-Association MLS in North America, about their efforts to include blockchain technology in the MLS. As John has long been one of the biggest proponents of this technology in the space, and one of the leaders pursuing innovation using blockchain in real estate, I wanted to learn more about what TRREB is doing and what his vision for the technology is.Again, as before, this conversation gets technical at times, not to the level of true technologists but possibly beyond the interest of everyday agents. Nonetheless, I thought it worth capturing so we all can understand whether and how blockchain could apply to use cases in real estate.
"You're going to have a culture, no matter what. But it may be a bad culture if you're not the one creating it. " - Mark O'Mara Why is culture so important in your law firm? What can you do to build your organization's culture intentionally? Why do Kolbe and PRINT® scores give you and your team an edge? How can you utilize Kolbe & PRINT® scores beyond hiring? A Culture of Excellence David Craig, John Martin, Mark O'Mara, and Reza Torkzadeh have all been instrumental in establishing the success of their respective firms. But by focusing on culture, they've all been able to take that success and bring their organizations to the next level. In this special episode, recorded live at the EVOLVE Virtual Summit, Head of Coaching Strategy at Crisp Jessica Mogill leads a lively panel discussion on company culture: how to assess it, influence it, and what values lie at the center of it. Hire Learning Culture at a company starts with people, and people start when you hire them. But too often, firms don't give hiring the attention it deserves. David Craig says he used to spend more time picking a jury than picking who worked for him at his business. Reza Torkzadeh lost over half his staff in one day. He had to start over and be much more intentional about the process. Leveraging Kolbe and PRINT® assessments empower him to get to know candidates more deeply and understand if they would be a long term fit. David also uses Kolbe & PRINT® to assess if his people are in the right roles. Finding a role that fits with each team member's skill set — that is challenging and exciting for them — can mean the difference between an all-star and a dud. As he says, “Just because I hired you as this paralegal doesn't mean you have to stay there. Let's look at your scores and figure out what is the best use of your time, so you're going to be happy and you're going to stay with us for a long period of time.” Out of PRINT® John Martin doesn't just use strategic assessments for placement decisions. He references them every day to know how to best communicate with each member of his team. Everybody has different communication styles and motivators. To get the most out of your team members, you have to know what drives them and how they work best. As John told it, “I looked at his PRINT® and I realized that the type of autonomy that I want is frustrating to him. He wanted to have systems in place. He wanted to be what I would consider micromanaged. So basically I just said to him, ‘You know, I've never been a manager before. It looks like you need something different. Do you want to develop that?' So now this guy is doing the Crisp Experience Program. He's developing all of our systems. He's one of our top producers this year.” Key takeaways: Give it a try, even if you're skeptical. If you're not using all the tools available to you, you're operating with a hand tied behind your back. Beware of sunk cost. Don't waste your time trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, and don't be afraid to fire someone if necessary. Your people are your most important asset. Without them, you're just out there on your own. Galatians 2:20-21 ESV 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. CHRIST LIVES IN ME. Christ paid the penalty we owed for failing to keep the law. Through our faith in Christ, God "declares us righteous" [justified] His righteousness is clothed upon us. Thus, Paul testified that he is crucified and is dead to the law. Once a person is dead, he is separate from the law. So Paul was freed him to truly "live to God." There is a great exchange that is happening. The sinful ‘me' dies and is substituted by the resurrected Christ ‘in me'. This life continues to live in the flesh surely. But, it is now directed not by the sinful self but by faith in Christ. Christ life will be manifested in our lives. That is, by the power of the indwelling Spirit. In Rom 6:4-6, Paul has elaborated this. He writes, “We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.” The Christian life indeed isn't difficult. It's impossible. For it's the resurrected Christ expressed in and through us. His life must be infused in order for us to live. Apart from Christ we are a branch detached from the vine - nothing. We can't pump something when deep in our hearts is nothing. Religious people do try to imitate Christ's moral goodness. However, by trying to live morally by following the law, they nullify the grace of God. The working of the flesh would never glorify God. It's in our yielding to the Spirit's control that His life is lived. Notably, this working of the Spirit is the grace of God. That is, the power or capability of God for us to obey the will and commands of God with gusto. As John has articulated, “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome..” [1 John 5:1-3] This pleasure of obeying God is definitely the life of Christ demonstrated in the power of the Spirit. -------------- Visit and FOLLOW Gospel Light Filipino on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram

As John's vision of the mighty angel continues, he begins to see the Temple and is told to measure it for protection. A voice from heaven explains to John that Jesus' witnesses will be trampled by the enemy for a temporary period of time, but then it will be vindicated. God's eternal place of worship is protected, and your earthly place of witness is dangerous, but the church's prophetic witness about Jesus is effective!
This Sunday, Pastor Janel Navran preached a message on how CHURCH IS: Friendship! In a city coming back to life, we have the opportunity as God's people to invite others into the love of Christ through community and friendship. This takes boldness, commitment and sacrifice. As John 13:35 says, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Eric Konovalov and Harry Spaight are joined by a true networking champion champion joins us on this podcast, How to Network and Create Long-Lasting Relationships - with John Carr. John has been networking successfully many years and shares his insight. Networking in Chambers of Commerce and networking groups needs to be strategic and intentional. It is about finding people with a giver's mindset and developing relationships with these folks. Some mistakenly think they need to collect a ton of business cards and give out just as many. That does not result in anything of value. far better is it to have two good conversations with Givers and start building trust with each other. As John points out, once one starts to get referrals, business can be much better. There is already a measure of trust established based on the referral. However, there is still work to do after the introduction. Be a Giver and think of having 1-2 conversations at each event. In this episode Caleb has a fascinating conversation with John Lefebvre. John is a musician, composer, entrepreneur, retired lawyer, philanthropist, climate change activist, and author of the books, "All's Well: Where Thou Art Earth & Why" and "Good with Money: A Rich Guy's Guide to Gaining Everything by Losing it All". John grew up in the world-changing culture of the 60's. Forty years later he was a 1/4 owner in a company worth more than $2 billion dollars with 100's of millions in the bank, two homes in Malibu and a private jet. In 2007 he went to federal prison for charges of conspiracy to promote illegal internet gambling. That experience and his passion searching for greater meaning in life led him to philanthropy and activism to improve the lives of others. As John says, "The only thrill that remained was sharing the thrill with others." John believes generosity is a duty, especially for the wealthy...and the dividends of generosity is gratitude. It is this disciple who testifies to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written. John 21:24–25As we conclude our Easter season, we are given the conclusion of the Gospel of Saint John to ponder. Recall that John’s Gospel has been a central focus throughout the Easter Season. Therefore, if you have been prayerfully reading the Gospel for Mass each day for the past several weeks, then you have truly immersed yourself in this holy Gospel. The Gospel of Saint John is much different from the other three Synoptic Gospels. John’s language is mystical and symbolic. John presents the seven miracles as the seven “signs” that reveal Jesus’ divinity. Jesus is identified as I AM, the Son of the Father, the Vine, the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the Eternal Word, and more. John points to the Crucifixion as Jesus’ hour of glory in which He takes up His throne of the Cross for the salvation of the world. And John’s teaching on the Eucharist is truly profound.John states that the reason he wrote his Gospel was so “that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). John clearly loved our Lord and understood Him, not only by personal experiences while Jesus was alive on earth but also through a profound level of prayer in his later years. And this depth of understanding and mystical knowledge is communicated in such a way that the reader is easily drawn into John’s prayerful understanding. As John concludes His testimony about Jesus, he states something worth pondering. He states that Jesus did so many things that were not recorded by him or others, that if they were all written down, the whole world would not contain the books that would be written. First of all, everything that was written down could be the source of prayerful study for a lifetime. John’s Gospel alone could never be exhausted of its meaning. But then consider this final line of John’s Gospel and try to take it as a literal statement for a moment. If that statement were literally true, that the whole world could not contain the books that would record all that Jesus did, then this fact should leave us with a holy awe. In fact, the reason this must be true is because what Jesus did within each and every mind and heart He touched is truly indescribable. Volumes upon volumes could not thoroughly describe it. His divine action of saving souls, rescuing people from sin and death, and pointing them to eternal life is more than our feeble minds can fully comprehend. Reflect, today, upon the holy Gospel of Saint John. As we do conclude this Easter Season and our reading of John’s Gospel, allow yourself to sit in awe of the infinite activity of our divine Lord in the lives of those who have turned to Him. Consider every movement of grace in their lives that has been accomplished with such care and love by our Lord. Reflect upon the fact that for eternity you will be contemplating the Eternal Word made Flesh, the Messiah, the Great I AM, the Son of the Father and every other name given to Him Who is our God and King. Saint John loved our Lord and understood Him deeply because he spent his life prayerfully pondering all that Jesus did. Continue to commit yourself to this holy pondering so that you will be drawn more deeply into this contemplation with holy awe.Jesus, Messiah, You are truly beyond comprehension in Your beauty, glory and holiness. You are God from God and Light from Light. You are the Great I AM, and all the books in the world could not properly describe the depth of Your greatness. Fill my mind and heart with the gift of deep spiritual insight so that I, like Saint John the Evangelist, will be continually drawn into a holy awe of You. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.
Download this Podcast Matthew 11:7-15—As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: “ ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’ Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence, and violent people have been raiding it. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. Whoever has ears, let them hear. The post He Is the Elijah Who Was to Come appeared first on Getting to Know Jesus.

We deepen our relationships when we consider what might be the question behind the question asked of us, and then address the deeper issue. Hello everyone and welcome to episode 104. One of the things I like about our podcast is the engagement I find with our listeners. It’s one of the benefits of listening to You Were Made for This that I spoke about in our very first episode back in late November of 2018. I’ll have a link to that episode, 001 Six Reasons to Listen to this Podcast, in the show notes for listeners who may have missed it. I so enjoy getting your comments about our weekly episodes. Most are brief and encouraging, which I very much appreciate. And then every so often we’ll get a more lengthy response that challenges and stimulates my thinking. One such response from a listener came in recently that I found most interesting, and which is the basis of today’s show. It’s a concept that can help you transform your relationships into the best they can be. So keep listening. Listener response from Pittsburgh Not too long ago I received an email from Randy, a long-time listener to the podcast. Randy happens to be the Director of Financial Aid at the University of Pittsburgh. Randy wrote to me with his reaction to episode 097, Good Things Happen If We Ask. He related the episode to the work he does in the world of academic financial aid. Here is what Randy wrote: “While your focus on the podcast was about asking questions, this also took me down the path of when I meet with students and families. Most are so new to the process of applying for financial aid they do not know the questions to be asking. So, I approach answering their question, by then taking them on a journey of connecting dots to important pieces that address the real questions they need to have answered to ultimately be able to make their decision about affordability in attending our institution. “ “We often think we are asking the right question when in reality we either are not asking the right question or only skimming the surface. So, hopefully, as we become better question askers, we can also help others do the same by how we answer their questions.” Accounting: I didn’t know what I didn’t know My experience with setting up my accounting when I started my former business An important question behind the question John the Baptist was in prison when he heard all the things Jesus was doing. So he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?“ Matthew 11:3 The disciples’ question is loaded with emotion. Behind the question is wondering, “have we made a mistake in following you? Our leader, John, your cousin, is stuck in prison while you’re doing all these wonderful things. If you’re truly the one we’ve been waiting for, why is John locked up, unable to help you?” A tinge of hopelessness, discouragement, and the feeling of "maybe we should cut our losses and move on" Fear that we may have made a mistake Fear that we’ve wasted a lot of time Wondering, is it all true. Can we trust you to be who you say you are? Jesus responds to the question behind the question In answering John’s disciples, he addresses 3 different people: The disciples - John the Baptist himself - the crowds that were listening in on all this. To the disciples, he doesn’t give a yes or no answer to their yes or no question. Instead, he answers their question behind the question. He answers by reminding them what they have heard and seen, and then go back and remind John of the same thing “the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.” In essence, lives are being transformed And then there is this oh so tender response to John himself, “God blesses those who do not turn away because of me.” In effect, hang in their John. You’re in prison because of the stand you took for me, and my Father is going to reward you for it. As John’s disciples begin to leave, Jesus turns to the crowd and praises John the Baptist, in verse 11 of Chapter 11, Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John the Baptist.” So what does all this mean for YOU? How can you use what you’ve heard today to improve the relationships in YOUR life? Here are a few ideas: Become more skilled in answering questions people ask, anticipate that there may be a deeper concern behind their surface question. Practice the ORA principle of deepening relationships: Observe - Remember - Ask Observe Pay attention to any emotion that comes with the question. Is there any fear? Any sadness? Anger? How about joy? Do you see any regret? Put yourself in the shoes of the person asking you the question. If you were in their shoes, what would you be thinking or feeling? Remember Remember what it was like for you when you didn’t know what you didn’t know. Draw from that experience to extend grace and understanding. Ask Ask follow-up questions. Get people to define their terms. Ask for examples. Get clarification. Ask God’s spirit for help in responding to the question that will be most helpful. If you're feeling like John the Baptist Reading from Sarah Young's, Jesus Today, Day 102. In this special edition of The Hive Jive, John takes us through the history of “Telling the Bees.” For centuries, cultures the world round have had their version of telling the bees about significant life events within their family. Most times, this act especially applied to notifying the bees of a death within the family. However, bees were also told of other events in the family such as marriages, births, and new household members coming to live with the family. As John takes us through this history, he weaves in his own recent experience with this old-world tradition.

I hope you will join us every week and be sure to let us know how you enjoy the podcast and let others know about it, too. Thanks for listening. Thanks for joining me today for "A Little Walk with God." I'm your host Richard Agee. Well, the November elections are well behind us. A new president took office months ago. But our nation hasn't changed much. We still feel the effects of the divide that has been developing for a couple of decades. Party politics, escalated by the algorithms that social media shove to us to keep us addicted to what we want to hear, continue to grow on a hyperbolic curve. We continue to have the growing concern about racism or reverse racism or whether there is any racism and what constitutes racism. Is it against color? Ethnic origin? National allegiance? Religious affiliation? Political ideology? Socioeconomic status? It seems all of those get stirred into the mix whenever racism starts rearing its head in some circles. The "woke" movement and "cancel" culture are equally divisive. Somehow, we forget our entire history, good and bad, brought us to the place we are today. Right or wrong, the past is what it is and cannot be changed. It is history. Are we proud of our history? Some of it should be rightfully proud. Some of it we should fall on our knees in disgust and ask God forgiveness for our people as Daniel did. It doesn't change the facts of history, but it changes us. Then we see what is still happening with the pandemic. India seems to be the disease's principal target as I write these words, although the United States still has 32.5 million positive cases and more than half a million deaths in its wake so far. And the number of new cases has remained relatively flat since mid-February despite more than half the population receiving at least one dose of the miracle vaccine to stop the spread. Chances are we will take another booster in six months or at least twelve months because of the mutations the virus undergoes with each generation of its spread. It appears masks will become the new global fashion statement. The virus's secondary and long-term effects on the body are still being discovered. It is a vicious disease. We also don't yet know the long-term effects of the vaccines we take or the effects of the cures to get us out of intensive care wards. We know those are better than the days of suffering those with the disease endured with death knocking at the door, but we don't yet know what they are only a year into the process. So, what do we do? Responses look typical from where I sit. Some still isolate themselves, daring to go out only for necessities and emergencies. Businesses like DoorDash, Grubhub, and Uber capitalized on the isolation quickly delivering whatever you need – with the requisite fee and a tip, of course. Others try to hoard supplies as if the apocalypse arrived and factories will close forever. When supplies get to needy areas, sometimes money makes a difference in how distributors handle those supplies. The wealthy somehow always seem to have enough, and the poor always seem to remain in need. We can examine the plight internationally and blame poor government, but we can look at home and see the same results. Our responses continue to divide us no matter how we try to come together over issues. So, what do we do? As Christians, what is our role, and how should we respond to the mess we see around us on every front? Let me share from one of the readings this week, and I think it will speak for itself. My dear friends, we must love each other. Love comes from God, and when we love each other, it shows that we have been given new life. We are now God's children, and we know him. God is love, and anyone who doesn't love others has never known him. God showed his love for us when he sent his only Son into the world to give us life. Real love isn't our love for God, but his love for us. God sent his Son to be the sacrifice by which our sins are forgiven. Dear friends, since God loved us this much, we must love each other. No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is truly in our hearts. God has given us his Spirit. That is how we know that we are one with him, just as he is one with us. God sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. We saw his Son and are now telling others about him. God stays one with everyone who openly says that Jesus is the Son of God. That's how we stay one with God and are sure that God loves us. God is love. If we keep on loving others, we will stay one in our hearts with God, and he will stay one with us. If we truly love others and live as Christ did in this world, we won't be worried about the day of judgment. A real love for others will chase those worries away. The thought of being punished is what makes us afraid. It shows that we have not really learned to love. We love because God loved us first. But if we say we love God and don't love each other, we are liars. We cannot see God. So how can we love God, if we don't love the people we can see? The commandment that God has given us is: "Love God and love each other!" (1 John 4:7-21) I grant you that it is hard to get through the rhetoric we hear on every front today. We get blasted by the far-right and the far-left with little sanity from either side. Both sides' ideas begin to sound okay when all you hear is what they feed you, but when you really listen to what the other side says, you find both sides often want the same outcome. If we would remember that neither party is in control of the world, or the country, or much of anything really, we would start to learn to talk to each other and solve problems. Neither side has control because Jesus is King. The head of one party or the other might promise all kinds of things, but they have little control over what they can do once on their throne. Obstacles in their path blur their vision, cause them to stumble, and stop their plans. It happens to every leader except one – King Jesus. His plans will succeed. We need to stop listening to the world's rhetoric on both sides and spend time with the King of kings. Learn how he lived and interfaced with those around him. Figure out what he did and what he said to those who followed him. Listen to the words of his disciples, those who lived next to him for three years and saw the miracles he performed and the way he treated the fringes of society. He was and is the King of kings then and now. Most people in the world just haven't acknowledged it yet. But it won't be long until every knee bows before him. Watch him. God is love, and his actions show us what love looks like, what God looks like in action. Jesus demonstrated the ultimate example of love for his followers and all humanity, taking on his shoulders the sins of all humankind and carrying them to the cross. That horizontal beam of the Roman symbol of agony and death should remind us of the love we should have for each other as Jesus showed us when he lived with us for those few years. He is our example. Love is the characteristic that sets Jesus' followers apart from the rest of the world. We genuinely care about others. During the final battles between Rome and Jerusalem, the Christians helped those left in the city flee. During the burning of Rome, it was the Christians who provided aid and shelter to those left homeless as they could. It was Christians who helped the plague-ridden victims in the middle ages. Christians come to the assistance of others because they care about their fellow man. It doesn't matter what color a person's skin. God made all of us some shade of brown, from a pale tan to almost ebony, but when we compare our pigmentation, we all fall onto the brown side of the color wheel. We all look the same inside and react to drugs and treatments about the same way. Our limbs, organs, and brains work the same way. God made us much more alike than different if we will stop to examine humanity. And if God made us all, it means we must love our brothers and sisters. As John tells us, "We love because God loved us first. But if we say we love God and don't love each other, we are liars. We cannot see God. So how can we love God, if we don't love the people we can see? The commandment that God has given us is: "Love God and love each other!" Now, go and demonstrate the love of God where you are, show others who the God of creation is by his Spirit living through you. You can find me at richardagee.com.
John Lee Dumas is one of the most successful business podcasters of all time, with more than 1 million listeners, more than 100 million podcasts listen, and many millions of dollars of revenue. Just last month, John's Entrepreneurs of Fire show generated $313,000. In today's episode, we're going to discuss two key principles that helped John achieve this success. How John Escaped the Rat Race It took six years of struggle. Six years of failure. Six years of feeling trapped. John Lee Dumas found himself sitting at a red traffic light with a sinking feeling in his stomach. Even after college and eight years as an officer in the army, his life moved at the same rate as his car in rush hour. It was going nowhere. “I had done all the right things, and now, here I was, stuck on this hamster wheel going nowhere, inspiring nobody, especially not myself, and just feeling like I was trapped in this world that I had created,” John said. As he inched along the roadway, he went to listen to a podcast, only to find he had finished the series. He drove on in the silence for 45 minutes, listening to cars honking, tires rubbing against the asphalt, and the quiet hum of the radio. At that moment, a “lightbulb” went on. There needed to be a daily podcast interviewing successful entrepreneurs. “There should be someone who creates it, why not me? I know all these great entrepreneurs who are hosting their own shows. I can be just like them, I can do this,” John said to himself. John Lee Dumas is one of my heroes. After years of struggle, John is now the founder and host of the award-winning podcast Entrepreneurs on Fire. With more than 100 million listens, of his more than 3,000 episodes, John has turned Entrepreneurs on Fire into a media empire that generates more than 1 million listens every month and seven figures of net annual revenue for eight years in a row. He just published the book The Common Path to Uncommon Success, which I have personally been devouring and loving. John's book, based on thousands of interviews from his highly acclaimed podcast, teaches his revolutionary 17-step roadmap that outlines a proven path for entrepreneurs to achieve the financial location and lifestyle freedom they're looking for. From years of failure to years of inspiring success, here are two key principles that helped him do it. 1. Become a Person of Value: the Solution to Someone's Problem “Do not try to become a person of success but try to become a person of value.” – Albert Einstein John decided to become a person of value first and foremost. “If you are the number one solution to a real problem in this world, you will win,” he said. In John's book, he says every human is tuned in to the same radio station: WIIFM—What's in it for me. That's what it all comes down to. People don't care about us and what we're trying to do. They don't care about our business or our branding; they care about how we can help them achieve what really matters to them. “[People] will ignore the second-best solution, all the way through to infinity, because people want the best solution to their problem, and if you provide that, you will win,” John said. It's about filling a void, solving a problem, and finding the niche that isn't being served. Anyone can be passionate, but who cares? It all comes down to the question, “What's in it for me?” “What I saw was a bunch of great business podcasts interviewing entrepreneurs, and they were all doing it one day per week,” John said. “But I had a problem with them because I wanted a podcast that delivered a fresh episode seven days a week . . . So I said, ‘I'm going to fill that void, I'm going to solve that problem.' And I launched Entrepreneurs on Fire, the first daily podcast interviewing entrepreneurs, and it was a Grand Slam.” We can take what we are passionate about (the big idea), determine our niche audience, find a problem, and be the solution. In order to determine what unique value we can offer, we must keep our eyes open, dive deep into areas of our passions, and uncover problems that aren't being solved. People will pay good money if you are the best solution to their problem. A good entrepreneur doesn't just find a problem and solution and run with it. They must constantly check in and make sure they are meeting their audience's needs. We can't assume we know what our audience wants. We must ask them. One of John's biggest failures was simply because he built and launched a service and then discovered after it was launched that his customers didn't want the service. Remember, success relies on being able to provide VALUE to our customers. 4 Questions to Ask Our Audience: John gave four questions we can ask our audience to help determine how we can increase monetization and the value we offer. How did you first hear about me? What do you like about my content? What don't you like about my content? What is your biggest struggle right now? Don't stop there. John encourages entrepreneurs to continue to diversify their revenue streams. Provide value in different formats. Building additional revenue streams will help prepare for unexpected circumstances. In John's case, he doesn't only produce a podcast. He has other revenue streams such as affiliate marketing, books, online courses, a membership site, and more. We must ask, what is it going to take for people to join our revenue streams? What will it take to keep them in? Every month we must prove we're worth it to our customers. 2. Surround Ourselves with Mentors and Peers “You're the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” – Jim Roans John shared steps five and six from his book, The Common Path to Uncommon Success. Step 5. Find your mentor. We must get the right people to help us on our journey. A great way to find personal success is by following the clues of success others leave. As John said, “Your best mentor is currently somebody who is where you want to be one year from now.” They are still relevant because they just did what we are about to do. One of the most impactful things he learned from his own mentor is that your network will equal your net worth. “I've always fostered my network, and that's why I'm so obsessed with Entrepreneurs on Fire and interviewing the world's most successful entrepreneurs and surrounding myself with the right people,” John said. “I truly believe that to the core.” Step 6. Create or join a mastermind. Being part of a mastermind, or group will help us get to know people and build trust and respect. “Everybody deals with fear and doubt,” John said. “I thought I was the only person that was scared to launch a podcast . . . but then I joined a mastermind, and I realized, ‘Oh, everybody feels this way.' What a comforting feeling supporting and guiding each other through this; it was critical.” The most impactful thing John learned in a mastermind is that everybody struggles with fear and doubt. Masterminds provide support and help guide us on our path to success giving us more confidence to move forward. Key Takeaways Thank you so much John for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: Become a person of value. Provide the number one solution to real problems. Fill the void. Find the problem that isn't being solved and be the one who solves it. Don't let failure stop you. Follow the clues of success. Our best mentor is someone who is where we want to be one year from now. Build our network and surround ourselves with good examples. Create multiple revenue streams and provide value in more than one format. Connect with John If you enjoyed this interview and want to learn more about John, you can find his website at eofire.com. For $300,000, you can buy a new McLaren 720S sports car. The vehicle comes with a V8 engine pumping 710 horsepower—considerably more than you’ll need for your morning commute. Of course, you might be tempted to use all that power. One Virginia driver learned his McLaren was so “fast” it could go from an upscale showroom to the scrap heap in just twenty-four hours! One day after buying the car, he slammed it into a tree. (Thankfully, he survived.) Just three chapters into the story of the Bible, we learn how a different bad choice and a tree marred God’s good creation. Adam and Eve ate from the one tree they were to leave alone (Genesis 3:11). The story has barely begun, and paradise is cursed (vv. 14–19). Another tree would play a role in undoing this curse—the cross Jesus endured on our behalf. His death purchased our future with Him (Deuteronomy 21:23; Galatians 3:13). The story comes full circle in the Bible’s last chapter. There we read of “the tree of life” growing beside the “river of the water of life” (Revelations 22:1–2). As John describes it, this tree will be “for the healing of the nations” (v. 2). John assures us, “No longer will there be any curse” (v. 3). God’s story comes with the happily-ever-after we all long for.
In our Baptism, you and I are not simply called children of God. As John exclaims, “That is what we are!” It’s no small blessing that Jesus calls us his “brothers” and that you and I get to pray, “Our Father.” You and I belong together in this family.
[Comment: Words Not Passing Away] Friends of the Rosary: It's good to be creative and cultivate imagination. But when it's about eternal truths is preferable to stick to the Scriptures. As John wrote — and we read today (John 2:31-36) — "the one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things" and "the one whom God sent speaks the words of God." Our arrogance and lack of humility bring us often to re-invent the reality of the human being, engineering many times anti-life ideologies and philosophies. Naturally, they disappear after they are proved wrong and only after destroying the souls of many. We've seen this across history. In Matthew 24:35, Jesus Christ said: "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away." We must stop offending the Creator and put our trust in Him. Jesus, I Trust in You! That You May Believe | The Gospel of John || The evening of Resurrection Sunday the disciples were gathered in fear. But there was also hope. They had heard from the women and the two on the road to Emmaus that Jesus was alive. They wanted to believe, but it seemed so unbelievable. Then Jesus appeared to them and their hope turned to joy. Except for Thomas. He wasn’t there and still didn’t believe until Jesus appeared to him as well. Jesus said blessed are those who have not seen but yet believe. As John wrote, this gospel account is sufficient, that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ.
Are you trusting Jesus Christ as your life? That’s the all-important, eternal question that each of us must answer. It’s not enough to merely give assent to Jesus intellectually. As John 11 teaches us, Christ is the resurrection and the life, and he’s the only one who has conquered death. In this Easter message, David Platt urges us to respond to this truth—through faith and baptism—while we still have time. Those who trust in Jesus as their Savior and Lord can know that they have eternal life.

As a youth, he excelled in his studies and was highly regarded by his peers for his knowledge. At the age of 16, John decided to leave the world and retired to a hermitage near the base of Mount Sinai. For the next four years, John spent his time in prayer, fasting, meditation and discernment while preparing to take solemn vows to the religious life. Through the direction of Martyrius, John curbed his vices and worked to perfect his virtues. After professing his solemn vows, John began to spend more of his time studying scriptures and the early fathers of the Church. He became very knowledgeable in these subjects but his humility caused him to hide his talents and not presume to share them with others. Near the end of his life, he was encouraged to share his knowledge with others and wrote the "Climax" also known as "The Ladder of Paradise." This work was a collection of sayings and examples to illustrate how to live the monastic life. From this work, he received the name Climacus, a derivative from the Latin root for climax or ladder. As John progressed in years and wisdom, many of the religious living on Mount Sinai began to seek his advice in spiritual matters. He freely offered his advice and was highly regarded for his wisdom and holiness. Around the year 600 the abbot of all the religious in the region of Mount Sinai died and John was chosen to replace him. John ruled until his death in 605 and always tried to lead through his own example. Saint of the Day Copyright CNA, Catholic News Agency
Discovering your one big idea and then making it a reality is the key to unlocking financial freedom and fulfillment. Today we speak with John Lee Dumas, the creator and host of Entrepreneurs on Fire, a podcast that's enjoyed over 100 million downloads. In our conversation with John, we explore what he did to find uncommon success while also unpacking his best lessons from interviewing over 3,000 of the world's top entrepreneurs. Early in this episode, John talks about the most important elements to building a thriving brand. After chatting about how he discovered his niche, he dives into why being the first in your niche is such an advantage. We then discuss when and why you should focus on quantity over quality and why excellence is often achieved from consistent work. Later, we talk about John's book and how it provides 17 core principles that are the foundations for entrepreneurial success. As John explains, there's a common path that anyone can follow to achieve their dreams. Tune in and learn how you can take your first step.
Because he spoke this way, many came to believe in him. John 8:30Jesus had been teaching in veiled but deeply profound ways about Who He was. In prior passages, He referred to Himself as the “bread of life,” the “living water,” the “light of the world,” and He even took upon Himself the ancient title of God “I AM.” Furthermore, He continually identified Himself with the Father in Heaven as His Father with Whom He was perfectly united and by Whom He was sent into the world to do His will. For example, just prior to the line above, Jesus states clearly, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me” (John 8:28). And it was because of this that many came to believe in Him. But why?As John’s Gospel continues, Jesus’ teaching remains mysterious, deep and veiled. After Jesus speaks profound truths about Who He is, some listeners come to believe in Him, while others become hostile to Him. What is the difference between those who come to believe and those who ultimately kill Jesus? The simple answer is faith. Both those who came to believe in Jesus and those who orchestrated and supported His murder heard the same teaching of Jesus. Yet their reactions were so very different. The same is true for us today. Just like those who heard these teachings for the first time from Jesus’ own lips, we also are presented with the same teaching. We are given the same opportunity to listen to His words and either receive them with faith or reject them or be indifferent. Are you one of the many who came to believe in Jesus because of these words?Reading these veiled, mysterious and deep teachings of Jesus as they are presented in the Gospel of John requires a special gift from God if these words will have any impact upon our lives whatsoever. Faith is a gift. It’s not just a blind choice to believe. It’s a choice based on seeing. But it’s a seeing made possible only by an interior revelation from God to which we give our assent. Thus, Jesus as the Living Water, the Bread of Life, the great I AM, the Light of the World, and the Son of the Father will only make sense to us and will only have an effect upon us when we are open to and receive the interior light of the gift of faith. Without that openness and reception, we will remain either hostile or indifferent.Reflect, today, upon the deep, veiled and mysterious language of God. When you read this language, especially in the Gospel of John, what is your reaction? Ponder your reaction carefully; and, if you find you are any less than one who has come to understand and believe, then seek the grace of faith this day so that our Lord’s words will powerfully transform your life.My mysterious Lord, Your teaching about Who You are is beyond human reason alone. It is deep, mysterious and glorious beyond all understanding. Please give me the gift of faith so that I may come to know Who You are as I ponder the richness of Your holy Word. I believe in You, dear Lord. Help my unbelief. Jesus, I trust in You.
In this podcast I interview a well known and seasoned leader (John Ramstead of Beyond Influence and author of On Purpose, With Purpose ) on how to lead and make decisions in the midst of uncertainty. If you haven't done so already, check out our upcoming leadership workshop and conference Heaveninbusiness.com/events. Here's the questions that we covered: What is your leadership role/responsibility What has been the hardest decision recently you have had to make? How did you make it? What do you do when there is great uncertainty, no perfect answer, things you need to decide, and God is silent about specifics? Have you gotten decisions wrong? How do you lead knowing you won’t be right all the time and people/outcomes can be brutal? Find out more about Heaven in Business membership at HeaveninBusiness.com/events. Find out more about John Ramstead: John Ramstead has been married for 28 years to his best friend and together they have three incredible boys. It has been ten years since a near fatal accident changed the trajectory of his life. Without the incredible support of God, his family and amazing friends he wouldn’t be the person he is today. As John navigated 25 surgeries and almost two years of hospital recovery, he sought God's direction what was next. However, according to John Merris, there are some tried-and-true strategies for selling on the marketplace that will protect your brand both on and off of Amazon. As John says, one of these methods is providing a great—and consistent—experience to both Amazon and non-Amazon customers. This means that important elements of your brand, such as pricing, messaging, and unboxing, should remain the same on every channel. By putting the customer experience first every time, you can successfully boost the credibility, revenue, and reach of your brand. In this week's episode of the Buy Box Experts podcast, John Merris, the President and CEO of Solo Stove, joins James Thomson to talk about the strategies brands can use to protect themselves when selling both on and off of Amazon. John explains how his brand positions itself on the Amazon marketplace, what he does to ensure consistent messaging across different channels, and his future plans for Solo Stove. Stay tuned.

Growing up in a haunted house, John Olson’s initial experiences with the paranormal were vast. When you have unexplained noises, sights, and feelings invading your life on a regular basis, it's easy to accept the paranormal simply as a “part of life”. As John grew older, his understanding and quest to learn about ghosts grew deeper. This led him to investigate not only the hauntings that dotted his life but also the experiences of others who led haunted life. Growing up in a haunted house turned out to be more common than most would imagine. Today on The Grave Talks, we hear the personal haunted story of John Olson. To Paul, the love of God meant everything. Just check out 1 Corinthians 13. It is more important than speaking in tongues or giving all to the poor or having faith to move mountains. As spectacular as these may be, if they are done without love, they are meaningless. Just a bunch of noise makers. And of faith, hope and love, the greatest is love. Why? Because love is God's nature. As John wrote, God is love. He is the source. He is the one who is patient and kind to you, who never keeps records of your wrongs, who rejoices in truth, who protects, who hopes and believes the best and perseveres with you. This is the love of God, a love that never fails, a love that means everything.
Today we bring you a special edition to lift your spirits and your weekend out of this world! In fact, toward Mars, where the Perseverance rover has made a spectacular landing on the red planet in pursuit of new science. Leading our virtual mission from his post at Caltech is our good friend, John Grotzinger. John is a professor of geology and geobiology, and the division chair for Geological and Planetary Sciences, at that esteemed university. Prior to moving to Caltech in 2005, he spent 18 years as a member of the faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). John is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a recipient of NASA's Distinguished Public Service Medal, and one of three inaugural advisory board members at Halliburton Labs.As if those credentials were not impressive enough, John is uniquely well qualified to explain Perseverance's significance. He served as chief scientist for the Mars Curiosity rover mission from 2007 to 2015. As John explains in our video, the informed risks taken during that mission, and lessons learned, enabled the Perseverance mission to push boundaries never before attempted. His explanation of the drill bit on the rover is not to be missed!Colin and I, both space enthusiasts, could barely contain our excitement. We hope you find this conversation with a genuine 'rock and rocket' scientist as stimulating as we did!----------Copyright 2021, Tudor, Pickering, Holt & Co. The law can define righteousness. The law can demand righteousness. But the law cannot deliver change because the law isn't the problem. I am. Hell, March 13, 1919Esteemed Mortal of New Orleans:They have never caught me and they never will. They have never seen me, for I am invisible, even as the ether that surrounds your earth. I am not a human being, but a spirit and a demon from the hottest hell. I am what you Orleanians and your foolish police call the Axeman. When I see fit, I shall come and claim other victims. I alone know whom they shall be. I shall leave no clue except my bloody axe, besmeared with blood and brains of he whom I have sent below to keep me company. If you wish you may tell the police to be careful not to rile me. Of course, I am a reasonable spirit. I take no offense at the way they have conducted their investigations in the past. In fact, they have been so utterly stupid as to not only amuse me, but His Satanic Majesty, Francis Josef, etc. But tell them to beware. Let them not try to discover what I am, for it were better that they were never born than to incur the wrath of the Axeman. I don't think there is any need of such a warning, for I feel sure the police will always dodge me, as they have in the past. They are wise and know how to keep away from all harm.Undoubtedly, you Orleanians think of me as a most horrible murderer, which I am, but I could be much worse if I wanted to. If I wished, I could pay a visit to your city every night. At will I could slay thousands of your best citizens (and the worst), for I am in close relationship with the Angel of Death. Now, to be exact, at 12:15 (earthly time) on next Tuesday night, I am going to pass over New Orleans. In my infinite mercy, I am going to make a little proposition to you people. Here it is:I am very fond of jazz music, and I swear by all the devils in the nether regions that every person shall be spared in whose home a jazz band is in full swing at the time I have just mentioned. If everyone has a jazz band going, well, then, so much the better for you people. One thing is certain and that is that some of your people who do not jazz it out on that specific Tuesday night (if there be any) will get the axe.Well, as I am cold and crave the warmth of my native Tartarus, and it is about time I leave your earthly home, I will cease my discourse. Hoping that thou wilt publish this, that it may go well with thee, I have been, am and will be the worst spirit that ever existed either in fact or realm of fancy.--The AxemanNormally we would put this letter in the timeline where it belongs but we really think it sets the mood for the episode. It is now obvious that we are talking about none other than The Axeman Of New Orleans! This is another unsolved series of murders along the lines of The Cleveland Torso Killer and the Hinterkaifeck murders that we’ve covered. Are you sensing the pattern? Cus there's a pattern. For over a year, from May 1918 to October 1919, the city of New Orleans, Louisiana was in a frenzied panic over a roaming serial killer dubbed the “Axeman”. The killer often struck with an axe that was found at the house of the victim. It wasn't always an axe, but it was always brutal. The axeman prayed on italians in New orleans. Today we will discuss the murders and some of the suspects of this crazy unsolved case. First Murders: Joseph and Catherine Maggio were italian immigrants who owned an Italian grocery and tavern at the corner of Upperline and Magnolia streets. The couple lived in an apartment behind the store and an adjacent apartment was occupied by Joseph's brothers Jake and Andrew. In the early morning of may 23rd 1918, at about 5 am, Andrew was awakened by loud thuds and moaning coming through the wall of the connecting apartment. Andrew awoke Jake and told him what he had heard. Andrew pounded on the wall but got no response. The brothers then rushed over to their brothers apartment to see what was happening. When they opened the door to their brothers room they were greeted by a horrifying sight. The room was covered in blood and the couple lay on the bed in a horrible state. The couple was laid out on the bed covered in blood each with several gashes in their heads. In addition their throats were severed. The police arrived and questioned the brothers and searched the apartment. They found that a panel in the door had been removed with a chisel and that was the point of entry. A blood smeared axe was found in the bathtub which was identified by the brothers as Joseph’s. There was a safe that had been opened and rifled through but nothing appeared to be missing. There was also a box of cash and gems under the bed that had not been touched. Andrew, the younger brother was under suspicion immediately. He was a barber by trade and admitted the straight razor found on the bed, that was used to cut the throats of the victims, was his. Jake had just received his draft notice and spent the night drinking. A neighbor confirmed that he had come home at around 2am, before the killing was thought to have happened. Both men were taken down to the station. Jake was released soon after but Andrew was held longer in hopes they could build a case against him. With no physical evidence, the police released Andrew a little later in the day. One block from athe murder scene a cryptic message was found written in chalk on the sidewalk. It read: “ Mrs Maggio is going to sit up tonight just like Mrs. Toney.” What did this mean? Who was Mrs Toney? No one really knew but some thought this may have something to do with the murders of three italian couples killed in much the same way in 1911. The three couples were all italian grocers that were hacked up with axes. The houses were entered by the killer removing door panels. The husband of the last couple murdered had the first name of tony. Could his wife be the “Mrs. Toney” from the message? Oddly enough journalists could find no accounts of these crimes even though they were reported by a retired detective that claimed to have worked the cases. People started thinking this may be mafia related and have something to do with the couple not paying protection money. It doesn't take long for the killer to strike again. Saturday June 16, 1918, a baker named John Banza arrived for a delivery at a grocery store at the corner of Dorgenois and LaHarpe streets. The grocery is owned by 59 year old Louis Besumer. He lived in an apartment behind the business with his companion, 28 year old Anna Harriet Lowe. As John was making his delivery, he found the front door locked so he went around to the side door and knocked. The door opened and John was shocked when Besumer opened the door and greeted him covered in blood from a large gash on his head. “We were attacked,” Besumer told John. In the bedroom John finds Anna, mutilated and barely clinging to life. There are bloody footprints leading from the bed to a swath of false hair on the floor. Once again entry was through a removed door panel and the weapon was a small rusty hatchet identified by Besumer as his own. Also no money or valuables were missing, just as in the first incident. Besumer couldn't give a description of the assailant and his wounds were not life threatening. Anna lays delirious from her wounds but claims she was attacked by a “mulatto”. Shortly after, a black man who worked at the grocery store had quit just a week prior, was arrested and questioned. He was ultimately exonerated and released. Anna's condition worsened and she began to accuse Besumer, the owner of the store, of the attack and claimed he was a german fuckin’ spy! The u.s. Justice department refutes this claim. The neighbors, obviously, begin to talk, spreading rumors of the two being an estranged couple, that secret government papers were found in the apartment, and even that the two were drug dealers with a secret supply of narcotics. Monday August 5, 1918, Anna died without saying anything else about the attack. When Besumer is released from the hospital he asks police if he could investigate the murder himself. This only makes the police suspicious and they actually arrest Besumer and try him for murder! He was eventually acquitted after a whopping ten minute...yes ten minute deliberation. Basically the jury took a smoke break and was like fuck it ...not guilty... lets go home. On the same day that Anna died, another grisly scene was found. In the suburb of Algiers, just across the Mississippi river from New Orleans, Edward Schnieder was arriving home after working third shift at his job. As he walked into the house, something felt off. The house was way too fuckin quiet. He calls out to his wife but she doesn't answer him back. As he suspiciously walks around, He unexpectedly finds his wife lying on the bed bleeding profusely from several cuts to the head. She is also 8 months pregnant. The police and ambulance arrive and after a search, there is actually little that links this attack to the previous ones. There was no entry by a door panel, the weapon was missing, and they were neither italian nor grocers. So, was it connected or does our killer just NOT have an MO. Which, if you’re up on your serial killer methodology, you’ll recognize that’s not exactly “normal”. According to crimemuseum.org (and all the good true crime researchers and authors), there are three main types of serial killers. THE MEDICAL KILLER Although this type of killer is very rare, there have been some people who have become involved in the medical industry to carry out their nefarious deeds. This type of killer feels they are shroud because it isn’t uncommon for people to pass in a hospital. They are usually highly intelligent and know how to carefully and cleverly conceal their murders. If it appears that a victim has died a natural death, there will be no reason for anyone to suspect foul play and search for the guilty party. Few doctors in history have managed to kill dozens of people before others began to catch on. THE ORGANIZED KILLER This type of serial killer is the most difficult to identify and capture. They are usually highly intelligent and well organized to the point of being meticulous. Every detail of the crime is planned out well in advance, and the killer takes every precaution to make sure they leave no incriminating evidence behind. It is common for this type of psychopath to watch potential victims for several days to find someone they consider to be a good target. Once the victim is chosen, the killer will kidnap them, often through some sort of ploy designed to gain their sympathy and take them to another location to commit the murder. Once the person has been killed, the perpetrator will usually take precautions to ensure the body is not found until they want it to be. A criminal like this usually takes great pride in what they consider to be their “work” and tend to pay close attention to news stories about their deeds. One of their motivating factors may be to stump the law enforcement officers who are trying to solve their crime. THE DISORGANIZED KILLER These individuals rarely plan out the deaths of their victims in any way. Most often, the people they kill are in the wrong place at the wrong time. This type of serial killer appears to strike at random whenever an opportunity arises. They take no steps to cover up any signs of their crime and tend to move regularly to avoid being captured. Disorganized killers usually have low IQ’s and are extremely antisocial. They rarely have close friends or family, and do not like to stay in one place for too long. These killers are prone to have no recollection of their deeds, or to confess that they were motivated by voices in their heads or some other imaginary source.Ok so on Saturday August 10, 1918, Pauline and Mary Bruno, age 18 and 13 are awakened in the middle of the night. They live behind a grocery store at the corner of Gravier and Tonti streets with their uncle Joseph Romano, age 30. He is a barber and Italian immigrant. The girls are awoken by sounds of a struggle coming from their uncles room. They sat up to see a large hulking figure looming in the doorway, and no… it wasn’t Mr. Moody. The girls screamed and the figure took off running. Their uncle staggered into the room and said something had happened, as the girls followed him into the kitchen. He was covered in blood. “My head hurts, call an ambulance!” he said. He then lapsed into unconsciousness and was taken to the hospital where he died a short time later. Pauline would say that Joseph was a good man with no enemies. The murder weapon was again the victims own axe which was taken from his shed and found covered in blood on the kitchen floor. By now the italian community is undoubtedly on edge. And for obvious and good reason... They were all wondering who would be next. In an in depth and profound statement, the Police Superintendent said: “I am of the belief that the murderer is a depraved killer with no regard for human life.” Really? What the fuck made you assume that ? Brilliant….absolutely brilliant! Fly off and save someone else, captain obvious! Sales of rifles, pistols, and shotguns increased, as did the addition of bars, grates, and grills on windows. Police are inundated with calls about suspicious people, findings of axes and chisels discarde on the street, and at least four incidents of grocers finding evidence that someone had tried to gain entry into their buildings using a chisel on the back door. In these cases the doors were too thick for the chisel to get through and whoever was trying to get in just gave up. There was even a report of a man that heard scraping sounds at his back door so he fired his shotgun at the door and saw someone hauling ass away from the house. One man said an entry attempt was foiled by a case of tomatoes blocking the back door on the inside. That's one lazy killer, seriously, that is lame. Oddly enough, the range of victims and dates seem completely random. Police had pretty much no leads. The only things they knew for sure were that the killer entered by chiseling out door panels and attached brutally with axes and hatchets found at the scene of the crime. There was a lack of much more evidence. There were no clear finger or foot prints at the scenes. The city was in a panic. And of course there was no shortage of people bringing up the Jack the ripper comparisons. Since were also postulating that the killer may be a jekyll and hyde type personality. A normal well mannered person that may have some impulse take over that turns then into a killer with a blood lust… Which we suppose is like many serial killers. Well as the summer went by and the year was coming to an end, things died down on the axe murderer front. The war ended and people rejoiced and the murders started to fade from the public consciousness. By the new year most were not talking about the murders anymore and many had let their guard down. Then in March of 1919 it all came rushing back.Charles Cortimiglia, an italian immigrant, his wife Rose and the couple's two year old daughter May, live behind their store at the corner of 2nd and Jefferson streets in the suburb of Gretna. On the morning of March 9, 1919, a neighbor, Hazel Johnson, went to the store to find it locked up. This struck her as odd as Charles was known for his reliability. He had the store open at 5am every day including Sundays without fail. Hazel knocked but received no answer. She went around to the side of the building and peered into the bedroom window but it was so dark, she couldn’t see anything inside. She went around the back and saw that a panel had been removed. And so, for some stupid ass reason she decided to go inside…all of these people wandering into other people's homes are just asking for it honestly… Who does that?! You know it's gonna be bad… Call the fucking cops. At any rate, once inside she of course, found a disturbingly brutal scene. She found Rose bleeding profusely from deep gashes on her head and holding the body of her dead daughter. Her husband lay on the bed beside them with several severe injuries to his head as well. Clinging to life the couple was taken across the river to Charity Hospital. Rose suffered a few severe injuries to her head but was expected to survive. Her husband had his skull crushed during the attack and was not expected to live. In the hospital, as Rose was recovering she was able to recall waking up in the night to her husband struggling with an intruder who was brandishing an axe. After disabling the husband the intruder came after her and her daughter. Incredibly she claims she was able to identify her attacker! She named 17 year old Frank Jordano, son of their neighbor iorlando Jordano. The Jordanos owned a competing grocery store on the same block. According to locals there had been bad blood between the families for a little while now. The Cortimiglias had worked for the Jordanos managing their grocery store. The Jordanos decided to take over managing the grocery themselves putting the Cortimiglias out of work. The Cortimiglias then opened their own grocery just a few doors down. The Jordanos vehemently deny any wrongdoing and claim the relationship with the Cortimiglias has been cordial. Also standing at 6ft tall and weighing over 200 lbs, they say there's no way their son could have squeezed his big ass through the removed door panel. A few days later, surprising everyone, Charles regains consciousness. He says that in fact it was not the neighbor that attacked him but it was an unknown assailant. Despite this, Frank and his father are placed under arrest for the murder of Mary Cortimiglia. This brings us to Friday March 14, 1919. The newspaper in New Orleans, the Times-Picayune, publishes the letter that we read at the opening of the show. A mocking letter full of cryptic statements. Again, the letter states that the following Tuesday, the axeman will spare anyone playing jazz as he is a jazz aficionado. The following Wednesday would be St. Joseph's day, a day off celebrating within the Italian community. Accordingly, Tuesday night there was all kinds of shit going on around the city. Jazz clubs were packed with people. Axeman parties were in full swing at people's houses. Even homeless people along the riverfront improvised their own instruments to play jazz all night. True to his word, the axeman did not cometh. Not one was attacked that night… And they probably had a ton of fun not getting killed, but THAT would NOT be the end of the axeman's reign of terror. Wednesday May 21st sees the trial of Frank and iorlando Jordano. Despite overwhelming evidence to their innocence and the refusal of Charles Cortimiglia to identify either of them as the attacker, the jury convicts the two men based solely on the accusations of Rose. The judge sentences Frank to death and his father to life in prison. Everyone was hopeful that the axeman's run was over, however on Sunday August 10, 1919… The axeman would strike again. On this morning, Stephen Boca, you guessed it, an italian immigrant grocer, SHOCKER, came stumbling out of his apartment that was, yes… Connected to his grocery store on elysian fields Ave. He stumbled down the street bleeding profusely from several severe head wounds, making his way to a friend's house. His friend Frank helped him in, treated his wounds and called for help. The police investigated the scene and found all the axeman trademarks including the chiseled door panel and another, you guessed it, a bloody axe in the kitchen. On Tuesday September 2, 1919 a druggist named William Carlson hears a suspicious noise outside of his back door. He fires several shots through the door at the would be intruder. The figure runs off leaving behind a what? Yep! An axe! Wednesday September 3rd 1919 a young woman named Sarah Laumann is attacked in her bed by a man with a DUN DUN DUN… axe. She sustains several head wounds but recovers at the hospital. She claimed the man came after her in the dark with an axe, yet she could offer no description of the attacker. A bloody axe was found in the yard but that's possibly the only similarity at the crime scene. Entry was gained through a window not a chiseled door panel. And she was young, not italian and not a grocer. Was this the work of the axeman, or maybe a copy cat killer? Mike and Rose Pepitone were italian immigrants who ran a grocery store at the corner of Ulloa and South Scott streets. They shared the residence with their 6 children ages 2-12. In the early morning of Monday October 27 1919, a man named Ben Corcoran, a sheriff's deputy, happened to be walking by the store. As he passed by, the Pepitone's 11 year old daughter came running out screaming at him for help. Inside the home he found a horrific scene. Mike Pepitone lay on the bed with his skull smashed in from several smashes with a blunt object. He was still alive…but barely. He was rushed to the hospital where he would die a short time later. His wife and children were all unharmed. Rose claims that around 2am she was startled by her husband's screams. She saw two shadows retreating towards the children's room. That's right… She said she saw TWO shadows. She turned to the kids room but the attackers had dipped out the back door. Police include this in the axeman murders, despite a couple of significant differences. First, entry was made via a window that was broken enough to unlatch and open it. Second the murder weapon was a pipe with a large nut at the end. it was found that there was no axe on hand at the house so they think the killer used whatever they found. Also the obvious claim of there being two attackers. Police noted that Rose did not seem to be upset over the incident and did not cry or show any emotion when answering questions. We'll get back to Rose Pepitone in a bit. The residents didn't know it yet but this would be the last axeman killing. And just as abruptly as it started, it was over… no more axeman. So who was it… Were there suspects? Let's take a look. First off, whatever happened to Frank and his father that were convicted in the killing of 2 year old Mary Cortimiglia? Well on December 6 1920, Rose Cortimiglia recanted her statement and claimed she only accused the men because of her jealousy stemming from the feud between the families...a family feud if you will…SURVEY SAYS!! No? Ah whatever fuck you if you don't think that's funny. Anyway, The men were given full pardons and set free. Crime writer Colin Wilson speculates the Axeman could have been Joseph Momfre, a man shot to death in Los Angeles in December 1920 by the widow of Mike Pepitone, the Axeman's last known victim. Wilson's theory has been widely repeated in other true crime books and websites. However, true crime writer Michael Newton searched New Orleans and Los Angeles public, police and court records as well as newspaper archives, and failed to find any evidence of a man with the name "Joseph Momfre" (or a similar name) having been assaulted or killed in Los Angeles. Newton was also not able to find any information that Mrs. Pepitone (identified in some sources as Esther Albano, and in others simply as a "woman who claimed to be Pepitone's widow") was arrested, tried or convicted for such a crime, or indeed had been in California. Newton notes that "Momfre" was not an unusual surname in New Orleans at the time of the crimes. It appears that there actually may have been an individual named Joseph Momfre or Mumfre in New Orleans who had a criminal history, and who may have been connected with organized crime; however, local records for the period are not extensive enough to allow confirmation of this, or to positively identify the individual. Wilson's explanation is an urban legend, and there is no more evidence now on the identity of the killer than there was at the time of the crimes. Two of the alleged "early" victims of the Axeman, an Italian couple named Schiambra, were shot by an intruder in their Lower Ninth Ward home in the early morning hours of May 16, 1912. The male Schiambra survived while his wife died. In newspaper accounts, the prime suspect is referred to by the name of "Momfre" more than once. While radically different than the Axeman's usual modus operandi, if Joseph Momfre was indeed the Axeman, the Schiambras may well have been early victims of the future serial killer. Ok, so let’s talk about THE BLACK HAND… Since the majority of the Axeman’s attacks were on Italian-American grocers, it has led some to believe that they were all victims of an early form of Mafia, called the Black Hand. Black Hand crime was a name given to an extortion method used in Italian neighbourhoods at this time, therefore the murders could be linked to unpaid extortion debts. However, the Axeman frequently left suspects alive, which many Mafia experts believe would not have been the case if they’d have been true Black Hand attacks. In a similar vein, many Sicilian immigrants to American at that time had a deep distrust of the authorities, which led them to take disputes into their own hands and settle them the old-fashioned way, otherwise known as the ‘vendetta’. The vendetta could well have been the reason behind a number of the attacks. The good ol “sleep with the fishes, see! Meh!” COPYCAT KILLERSAlthough the Axeman had a very distinct M.O., not all of the killings followed it to the letter, leading some to believe the Axeman was, in fact, several people who may or may not have been working together to terrorise the community. Looking at some of the crimes there were definitely differences to the norm. Whether it be the murder weapon or the mode of entry, even the number of assailants. This tends to be a pretty popular theory in a lot of circles. UNGODLY DEMONHis ability to appear in people’s houses in the middle of the night and vanish just as easily, have some believing the Axeman was indeed what he said he was in his letter to the press - ‘the worst spirit that ever existed either in fact or realm of fancy.’ People point to the fact that whomever it was, was able to fit through tiny openings in the doors lending to the claim that it was a shape shifting demon. Combined with the wording in the infamous letter, since people who are easily led down that path believe wholeheartedly that this was truly the work of evil incarnate. Other than those theories there doesn't seem to be much else in the way of suspects although during the investigation of the murder of the first victims, the Maggios, a crazy side story emerged, it goes as follows: The killing of Joseph and Katherine Maggio was never solved. But the case did take up another phase the next day, just hours after Andrew Maggio's release from jail. At 3 a.m. on May 26, Dodson and Obitz, the detectives who discovered the writing in chalk on the sidewalk a block from where Joseph and Katherine Maggio had been killed, were sitting on a stoop at Baronne and Calliope streets while investigating a series of robberies in the neighborhood. A man approached them. Dodson and Obitz "accosted" him, according to news reports about the incident, and a gunbattle began. Obitz, 38, was shot through the heart and died.In the aftermath, two innocent men who were mistakenly identified as having been the man confronted at Baronne and Calliope were shot dead by police, who faced no legal consequences for the killings. STREET JUSTICE! FUCK YEAH! Four days after the fatal shooting of Obitz, a teenager named Frank Bailey was arrested as a suspect at a house at the corner of Liberty and Perdido streets. "Will the death of Detective Theodore Obitz handicap the police in their pursuit of evidence upon which to lay a foundation for disclosing the murderer or murderers of Joseph Maggio and his wife, who were hacked to death with an axe last Thursday morning in their bedroom of Magnolia and Upperline streets?" the States asked in a front-page story published on May 28. "Obitz was one of the most active of the investigators in the Maggio mystery, and is said to have possessed some information that might lead to its solution."Bailey confessed to several robberies and to shooting Obitz, though at trial he changed his story and said he had falsely admitted to the killing of the officer because he was being tortured by police. He didn't deny firing his gun in the shootout. But Obitz, Bailey said at trial, had actually been shot by Dodson, the other officer. You hear that? The other COP shot him! Hhmmm suspicious much?! The jury didn't buy it, however. Frank Bailey was convicted of murder in the death of Theodore Obitz and sentenced to die at the old Parish Prison. He was executed just over two years later, on Aug. 13, 1920. He was 18 years old. Before going to the gallows, Bailey angrily denounced the prosecution. "Detective Harry Dodson, partner of Obitz, was the man who killed him," Bailey told the States in a jailhouse interview published the day before he was hanged. "One of the bullets fired by Dodson struck Obitz in the head as he was shooting at me. I fired three shots as I ran, but I am sure none of them took effect. I fired as I ran and could not take aim."But if I am to die for the murder of Obitz, who is going to pay the penalty for the deaths of Louis Johnson and Abraham Price, two innocent negroes who were shot down while they were hunting me? "When I have been executed, nothing will have been taken out of this world Friday. Most persons who hang are expected to make a last request. I will make none; not to the people of Louisiana. But I will make it to God. He hears; the public do not. I am going to walk to the gallows without a whimper. If there is such a thing as a spirit coming back to earth, I do not want to come back." Wow… So that's another crazy arm of this case that, while not directly related to the axe murders, produced more craziness and death. There were some later attacks too that might possibly have been the Axeman – Joseph Spero and his daughter in December 1920, in the city of Alexandria in central Louisiana, Giovanni Orlando of DeRiddler in western Louisiana a month later, in January 1921, and Frank Scalisi of nearby Lake Charles in April of the same year. Opinion is divided on whether these later attacks were the work of the Axeman or not. Some researchers do not even attribute the Pepitone murder to him. We’re very unlikely to ever know for sure. The Axeman was never caught, and there are a number of potential suspects, all of whom are problematic in one way or another. Good Morning, Colorado, you’re listening to the Daily Sun-Up. It’s Thursday January 14th, and even though there’s a lot of turmoil right now we’re feeling lucky to start the day with you. Today - the complicated path to reaching herd immunity from coronavirus. But before we begin, let’s go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we’re going back to January 14th, 1868 when Colorado’s first railroad received it’s third name in three years. But this name stuck for the next two decades - the Colorado Central Railroad. It was chartered in 1865 to connect Golden and Denver to gold mining districts. Now, our feature story. On Wednesday, Colorado crossed the 200,000 mark for the number of people who have received at least one dose of coronavirus vaccine. That means more than 3% of the state’s population is now on its way to immunity through inoculation. But how much further do we still have to go? The launch of the vaccination campaign reignites questions about what it means to reach herd immunity. Well, once enough people in a community are immune from a virus, the virus can’t find enough susceptible people to jump into and the local epidemic begins to die out. And at that point we’ve reached herd immunity. But, there’s a problem with this clean, perfect image of herd immunity. It’s not quite as simple as it seems. Colorado Sun reporter John Ingold is joining us today to tell us more. John thank you so much for your time, can you start by explaining how we measure, or calculate herd immunity? And at what point can we expect things to get better? As John said, there’s not a finish line we can cross and then immediately declare victory. This is a race we’re just going to have to keep running for a while. The bad news is that COVID-19 is likely here to stay, even after we reach herd immunity. And it’s uncertain how often we’re going to need to keep getting vaccinated in the future. But the good news is that as vaccines go into arms, herd immunity can now be reached without accepting the massive death toll that would go along with trying to achieve it through infection. Thanks for listening. Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today: - Tens of thousands of Coloradans were victims of unemployment fraud in 2020. But even after reporting that their identities were stolen, some people are being told they have to pay taxes on the fake claims. - The U.S. Space Command will move to Huntsville, Alabama, for its permanent headquarters. The department is currently located in Colorado Springs, and critics say the move is a political response to the 2020 election results. - A new report from 350 Colorado finds the oil and gas industry is responsible for 70 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in Colorado. Industry officials and state regulators say the calculation is an overestimate. For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. Good Morning, Colorado, and welcome to the Daily Sun-Up. It’s Friday January 8th, and we’re lucky to start the day with you. Today - Colorado’s coronavirus vaccine rollout is confusing, and frustrating, but according to state leaders - it’s also working. But before we begin, let’s go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we’re going back to January 8th, 1976 when Elvis Presley was in Eagle County celebrating his 41st birthday. There, he indulged in his favorite winter pastime - snowmobiling and while doing so he raised the hackles of a resident who complained to the Vail authorities. The caller happened to be Susan Ford, daughter of the president of the United States. Now our feature story. Months ago, Gov. Jared Polis, medical experts and state public health officials mapped out an orderly plan prioritizing when different groups of Coloradans can get the vaccine. But as that plan -- now twice revised -- has been put to use, the on-the-ground reality so far has been much less orderly. Colorado Sun reporters John Ingold and Erica Breunlin are here today to talk more about the rollout, and how disparities have emerged as counties, schools, and hospitals all chart their own paths. For those in the general public who are 70 and older, finding the vaccine right now will take persistence and patience. Right now, there’s not a central place for everyone to sign up. As John mentioned, people who have a regular doctor or health clinic they go to are encouraged to call those places for more information. The state is planning to organize more information on its vaccine website -- covid19.colorado.gov/vaccine. But, for at least the foreseeable future, state health leaders expect the process to be a little bumpy, with different timelines for different counties. Thanks for listening. Finally, here are a few stories that you should know about today: Rio Grande Pacific Corp. inks lease for the long-dormant rail line through Colorado high country - floating the possibility of oil cars in Browns Canyon. An Eastern Colorado billionaire landowner fights the lease plan. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has approved, for a second time, two drilling projects in Colorado after considering a court-ordered greenhouse gas assessment of the development’s environmental impacts. Colorado lawmakers are considering a new fee on a gallon of gas to boost money for road improvements. Colorado will make up to a million rapid COVID-19 tests a month available to school districts, charter schools, and private schools as part of its effort to get students back to the classroom and keep them there. Gov. Jared Polis announced the initiative Wednesday. Back in the spring, doctors hoped that antibodies from coronavirus survivors’ blood could save the sickest patients from succumbing to the virus. But, now 10 months in the pandemic, demand for convalescent plasma is low in Colorado. For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. In Session 143, I chat with John Capodilupo, co-founder of Whoop, the maker of the Whoop strap system I've been talking about for the last several episodes. At the risk of sounding like an informercial for this neat product, I've really enjoyed using the Whoop strap for the last few months. If you aren't familiar with it, the Whoop strap is a wearable device that tracks all sorts of cool metrics, including sleep, calorie burn, heart rate, and more. As John notes in the podcast, the folks at Whoop are using data science and machine learning to optimize personal health. And they do this through these proprietary metrics that are generated from the device. John gets into the weeds on this topic, and regardless of whether you're in the market for wearable tech, I think you'll find it quite fascinating! We also discuss Whoop's involvement in research in detecting the early stages of both Covid-19 and Alzheimer's disease. I think this device and the data it produces, is giving us a window to the future of big data and public health research. Fascinating times we live in for sure! If you're interested in trying out a Whoop strap for yourself, check out join.whoop.com/matt and save $30 in the process. You can also go to behavioralobservations.com/whoop, and that will take you in the right direction too. At the request of a listener who's been a Whoop user for quite a while, I've created a Facebook group, Behavior Analysts who Whoop, so feel free to join the group, ask questions, and so on. Here are the links to the resources we discussed: The Plos One article on Covid-19 detection. Research from Cornell on Alzheimer's. The Locker, Whoop's blog. The Whoop Podcast. I also wanted to let you know that I've decided to start a Patreon for Behavioral Observations. I arrived at this after much consideration. When I first heard about Patreon, it felt like a mechanism for asking for a handout... kind of like an internet tip jar, and I didn't start one because there was not enough value in it for the listener. Fortunately, Patreon has really stepped up their game to the point where they are able to offer subscribers really cool benefits. Specifically, depending on which membership tier is chosen, subscribers can access an ad-free podcast feed, subscribers-only bonus content, discounts in the Behavioral Observations CEU store, and much more. Earlier today, I just uploaded a great Q & A session with Greg Hanley that we recorded last spring, which is available for All Access and Institutional level subscribers. I'm also working with a few different companies and I hope to be able to offer subscriber-only discounts for products and services from other folks in the ABA space. So if this sounds good to you, head over to patreon.com/behavioralobservations to learn more!
Every Christmas we decorate our home with nativity scenes from around the world. We have a German nativity pyramid, a manager scene fashioned out of olive wood from Bethlehem, and a brightly colored Mexican folk version. Our family favorite is a whimsical entry from Africa. Instead of the more traditional sheep and camels, a hippopotamus gazes contently at the baby Jesus. The unique cultural perspective brought to life in these nativity scenes warms my heart as I ponder each beautiful reminder that Jesus’s birth was not just for one nation or culture. It is good news for the whole earth, a reason for people from every country and ethnicity to rejoice. The little baby depicted in each of our nativity scenes revealed this truth of God’s heart for the entire world. As John wrote in relation to Christ’s conversation with an inquisitive Pharisee named Nicodemus, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). The gift of Jesus is good news for everyone. No matter where on earth you call home, Jesus’s birth is God’s offer of love and peace to you. And all who find new life in Christ, “from every tribe and language and people and nation” (Revelation 5:9) will one day celebrate God’s glory forever and ever.
