This includes the challenges and transitions, and the growth opportunities and successes.  So we’re incredibly excited to bring you Season 4 of Elizabeth’s amazing Women’s Leadership Podcast, featuring her unique take on The Heroine’s Journey. With a nod to Victoria Schmidt, Elizabeth introduces us to the ideas & principles of The Heroine’s Journey in episode 1.  Our paths and learning are cyclical, repeated throughout our lives. “It’s a circle of learning that never ends” - which makes The Heroine’s Journey a wonderful metaphor for the progress of women’s leadership learning and growth. The Heroine’s Journey becomes a tool that you can use to understand where you are and where you’re headed, especially in your career and leadership roles. And know that your own journey will move forward. You can take comfort in that whenever you’re feeling stuck, and prepare yourself for next steps. In the second half of this episode, Elizabeth sets us on the path with Illusion, the first stage in The Heroine’s Journey. Illusion. It fools us. It’s a tool of systems of oppression. This week, Elizabeth invites us to think about the kinds of change we want to create in 2019, and do some planning and visioning to make it happen. One initial step to creating the space for change is wiping the slate clean of daily habits that no longer serve. Think about the places in your daily life where things just aren’t flowing the way you want them to, where stress or dread crop up. Those are likely the moments in your day when you’re keeping the plates spinning, but it’s by default rather than by design. Now, imagine how you could change up that routine to remove the stress and dread, and instead invite more flow and ease. Wipe the slate clean of all your preconceived notions about how that routine needs to go, and think creatively about how you can redesign it. As we move toward 2019, do yourself a favor. Make a note of a moment where daily life is stressful. Then, imagine all the ways you could transform that moment so that it serves rather than depletes you.    For more on creating routines and habits that serve, check out Episode 17 of The Women’s Leadership Podcast: Cleaning The Slate: Shifting Negative Daily Habits. This week, Elizabeth invites us to think about the coming year as an opportunity to make real change for women in our workplaces. Believe it or not, almost 20 years into the 21st century, we still have major corporations and other organizations out there that don’t have any policies, women’s affinity groups or leadership programming for their female employees. It’s time for that to change. And we can, as women leaders, be the catalyst for that change in the coming year. It means learning how to ally with other women, taking small and steady steps toward our goals, and using our voices in ways that may make others uncomfortable. You will not win everybody over. Not everyone will be happy with you. That has to be okay. The mission and purpose of supporting women’s leadership is greater and more important than our own individual discomfort at this moment in time. It’s simply the work we have to do to make the change that’s necessary for our future. This week, Elizabeth invites us to consider the opportunity we have right now to build hope, for ourselves and others. There’s no doubt about it - many of the women in this country have been through a horrific time in the last few weeks. Seeing women be ignored, disregarded and silenced on the national stage has, for many of us, triggered trauma and memories of being silenced repeatedly in our own personal and professional lives. One thing we can do right now to create hope is reach down within ourselves. Reach down into your memories and recall the experiences and practices that anchor your values. Use those practices and experiences to find and nurture your best self. Remind yourself of your basic human dignity. And then, from that renewed place of groundedness and leadership, reach down to lift women who aren’t there yet. This is the greatest calling in women’s leadership right now: to reach deep into ourselves to find our footing and then use that to lift others up. That’s how we’ll create hope.    Check out Episode 15 of The Women’s Leadership Podcast Reaching Down. This week, Elizabeth reminds us that it’s okay to give yourself permission to step back a little bit when you need to. It’s not everyday that you will take the day by the reins, but the power is in letting yourself sit back and collaborate to let others take the lead when you need to rest and refill. The idea of collaborative efforts in teams of women is powerful. Elizabeth encourages us to create or seek out tribes of women, where you trust and are invested in the same endeavor, and can share the lead, much as geese do when they fly.   The seat of the teacher has to rotate. This allows all of us as a collective to feed one another through learning, energy and education. If we do not allow this, we are missing out on the bodies of knowledge that are available to us from each person. Remember this: You can craft collaborative working circumstances where you don’t have to take the lead all the time, yet when you do, you are giving other women the chance to fall back and rest.  It’s the only way to be sustainable and avoid burnout. Every day, the Universe hands us opportunities for growth. Often, those come in the form of the consequences of our choices. When we do the thing, and it has a negative consequence, we have to step up and take responsibility for it. If we don’t, we abdicate our power to grow, and to be the change agentin our own life. The Universe will eventually come back around with another opportunity to take responsibility, and the next one may be like a brick to the head.   In this week’s episode, Elizabeth invites you to think about two related sets of questions. Where in your life have you abdicated responsibility, and consequently lost an opportunity for growth and change? How can you reclaim it? And, have you ignored a prompting to look at one of your blind spots? Can you step in and do it now? The moment you accept responsibility creates a profound mindset shift. Are you willing to not be liked in order to get the good work done? The more you fight for what you believe in, the more you stand in your own integrity and work to fulfill your true purpose, the more people who will show up who just don’t like you. When we’re fighting for what’s right, pushback can cause us anger and hurt.  It can be incredibly distracting from the purpose of our work. The question all of us need to consider right now is whether we are going to stay in the arena and fight for what’s right.  Are we willing to risk the blood, sweat, and tears to bring about the more just and equitable world we know is possible? What we don’t have time for anymore in this great new age of women’s leadership is the fear of being despised.  In this week’s episode, Elizabeth urges us consider that the pushback and hurt is not about us.  That if we are out there seeking to change the world in ways that benefit the whole, if we are in the game to make a difference, some people will not like it. More than 40% of us are primary breadwinners. We’re still relied upon to manage most of the childcare and take on most of the unpaid labor to maintain our households.   In this week’s episode, Elizabeth urges us to pause, pull back from the day to day, and look consciously at the ways we spend our time and energy. The change of seasons is a perfect time to pull back and think through in really concrete terms, “How can I recalibrate my life to represent what I want it to look like?” Consider this week’s episode an invitation to you to contemplate whether or not the things you are doing from day to day truly are in service of the larger mission of your life. What would it look like if you could be completely yourself in every area of your life? As women, we often feel that we need to lead segregated lives.   It can feel like we are never really anywhere where we can be completely at ease and ourselves.  We’ve all internalized that sense of fear that if we are who we really are, we will be perceived as either “not enough” or “too much”. This is part of the experience of living in patriarchy. And the problem is that the line is always shifting as to what’s acceptable, so that we can never meet the goals that are set out for us. In this week’s podcast episode, Elizabeth talks about having the capacity to be completely yourself in every area of your life and every aspect of what you do, as fearlessly as possible. The value of being comfortable with the totality of who you are is far greater than the value of other people’s approval. If you’re feeling like you’ve been taught that you are here to make others “feel good,” that you’re meant to be “nurturing”, that you need to prioritize other people's happiness over your own, that if you’re not pleasing others, you’re not good enough, then this episode is for you. Could you permit yourself to be present to your desire and longing? One of the things that is critical for us to talk about as women leaders is the nature of our sexuality and our desire in the world for ourselves - the nature of our erotic energy. We don’t talk about this very often, and certainly, we’ve been conditioned as women leaders rising in traditionally masculine work environments to abandon this side of ourselves for the sake of our work. In this week’s podcast episode, Elizabeth talks about how women’s desires have been characterized historically as being too frightening, too powerful, and something that causes violence to occur against us. It is tough for most of us to claim our sexuality and own our desire, yet so critical if we are to feel complete, aligned, authentic and present, and move more and more towards our own freedom, integral to creating the change that we want to see in the world. For this week’s podcast episode, Elizabeth joins us from Seattle where she and her kids are waiting for the moving truck to show up in California from New York City! She talks about how the quote “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make” from The Beatles was on her mind as she packed up to leave the city she has lived in for the last 17 years. From a leadership perspective, this is about what we create for ourselves in our lives in the form of support, and the reason we can make powerful transitions in ways that feel smooth. The key concept here is that what you put into your relationships in the form of love and support is what you receive back in exchange - and this applies not just in personal relationships but in professional relationships as well. At least, this is how it should be. Unfortunately, women are often conditioned by patriarchy to give relentlessly, regardless of what we get back. We may even feel guilty or ashamed about the idea that our relationships should serve us as well as us serving them. None of us are served as women leaders by relationships where all we do is give. Even as mentors and sponsors, we should be able to count on the people we mentor to support us as well as vice versa. So, how can you invest in relationships that serve you? Can you allow yourself to sit in the experience of two conflicting emotions at the same time? After living in NYC for 17 years, and with her move to Southern California coming up in less than a week, Elizabeth reflects on the theme of two things at once in this week’s podcast episode. This theme came up for her a couple of years ago at a workshop designed to create space for women who are divorced or in the process of divorcing to be in both gratitude and grief about the end of a marriage. It can be tough to hold two conflicting emotions at once, but in this episode, Elizabeth explores how it is not only a sign of psychological maturity to be able to do so, but is 100% necessary in order for us to become the full expression of who we are, integrating the full range of our experiences and emotions. Additionally, as women leaders, one of the questions we’ve been asking ourselves over the past 18 months in particular in response to what we are seeing in the world right now is - can we sit in a place of activism, of being change agents and in resistance, and also simultaneously hold a positive vision for the future that we can live into and strive towards? Women often start out their careers on a fast trajectory of success and then hit a wall. The glass ceiling is still all too real for many, and the danger of the narrative that it has been shattered is that we turn the blame on ourselves. We end up sticking it out in abusive work environments where we are not being supported or advanced, over-worked but not given the chance to move into the levels of leadership that we are capable of. Whether you are looking to uplevel in your career, or to make a transition to another role, company or industry by choice or external circumstances, we invite you to join us for Session 2: Growing Big Opportunities, or sign up for an all-access pass to all six sessions! There is never a bad time to offload all the things that are not serving you. In this episode, Elizabeth describes several opportunities she’s had to declare her own independence, in an effort to live by the sage advice she got from her father: “It is your sacred obligation to yourself to make decisions that propel you forward.” Sometimes declaring your independence means letting go of thought patterns that have held you back or relationships that no longer serve you. Declaring independence may mean breaking the hold of ancestral patterns in your family history that you don’t want to pass on to your children, or leaving a place or a job or a life that no longer meets your needs. During this 4th of July week, Elizabeth invites you to consider what you might need to declare your independence from. Write it down, and then take the time to grieve it. When we leave behind a place or relationship or pattern or life that no longer serves, we have to grieve the story of the future that might have been. We process the grief in order to get to the light. On the other side of the grief is the liberation. All of this is also a strong metaphor for where we find ourselves right now as a nation: finally fully seeing our past, grieving what has never really been true, and moving forward into the vision we want to create. As we have been watching and addressing what is happening at the border of our country right now with regards to children being separated from their families, we at the Gaia Project are taking a moment to consider what a difference it would make in the world if we had more women in power, particularly women who historically have been most marginalized. Our mission has always been to grow women into greater and greater positions of authority in society and at work, and after everything we’ve seen over the past weeks and months, this feels as urgent as it ever has. To that end, we’re doing something we’ve never done before. This summer we’re offering a Women’s Leadership Summer Masterclass Series that takes six of the most popular topics we teach when we go into corporate environments and makes them available to as many people as possible in an online format. You can register for one, several or the whole series. Some of the topics include: How to grow a new paradigm of leadership for diversity and inclusion How to overcome fear and the imposter complex and grow your confidence How to find and capitalize on mentors and sponsors so you can advance more rapidly These are all challenges that almost every woman we’ve ever worked with has encountered at one point or another, and we invite you to join us. We are more committed than ever to doing whatever we can to get more women into power, in both a time of crisis and over the long haul. This brings us to the topic of this episode of The Women’s Leadership Podcast, in which Elizabeth talks about leveraging your privilege for change. She shares how her father, a straight white man, has always been committed to social justice and modeled a conscious awareness of privilege to her and her sister from a very young age. She also discusses this critical turning point in the history of our country, when women of all backgrounds and diversities, including women of color, immigrants, LGBTQ women, and women of every diversity we can imagine, need to be represented on the national stage. If you are in a position of power or privilege in any part of your life right now, what can you do to get over fear? What can we all do to get over the idea that our voices don’t matter, get past the point of allowing ourselves to be silenced, get past the point of allowing our silence to silence others and move in the direction of using our privilege for change? How are you managing stress as a woman in leadership in our current climate? As women in leadership, we have long had to navigate a tremendous amount of day-to-day stress. However, what we’re seeing in the current climate is that many women are reaching a breaking point handling the stress of the news and the social and political environment, on top of the day-to-day pressures we already manage.. In this episode, Elizabeth talks about always being on the search for new solutions for managing stress, and recommends an interesting book she is currently reading: Mindsight: The New Science of Personal Transformation by Daniel J. Siegel, M.D. One of the ideas explored in the book is that when we are able to practice certain types of observation of ourselves and our thoughts, we can shift our experience in the day-to-day, and manage our stress more effectively. And, if we can we cultivate safe spaces for ourselves, even in the smallest of ways, we can also create a bit more ease within our days.
