Ask me a QHello Bright Minds, I wonder whether you've seen the Netflix hit Buying London with Daniel Daggers and his team of agents at his property firm DDRE? It's a lot of fun and very glamorous and my guest today is one of the team who you won't have seen on screen. I met Serge Cowan on a flight to Nice last September when he was going out to look at a property in Monaco and we got into a deep conversation about his life, including his four children. Serge is a global real estate advisor at DDRE who has sold properties in 27 locations and deals with DDREs international sales. Serge's 16 year old daughter Emily makes an occasional entertaining double act with him on Instagram and there's a link in the show notes. In 2002 Serge set up a property business which he told me he felt like he was married to. His wife worked with him too and alongside their professional life they spent five years trying to have a child. In 2007 along came baby Maddie who was born with cerebral palsy who very sadly passed away in 2017. Maddie's early years also coincided with the recession of 2009-2012 which hammered the business Serge had built. By 2018, a year after Maddie's death he realised the marriage wasn't right and their divorced was finalised in 2024.You're going to hear us talk about:A father's perspective of the strain and emotional difficulty of raising a profoundly disabled child.Battling the SEN system and local education authority for a child with cerebral palsy. His marriage coming to an end and walking away from the business he'd builtSerge's experience of ‘chronic anxiety' Negotiating with French estate agentsI hope you enjoy and extract something useful from my chat with Serge.MORE FOR YOU DM Jessica on instagram @comebackcommuk Get Caremail (free, every other Sunday at 7am) Read Mothers Work! When we lose something we care deeply about--a person in our lives, a child, a house--it can hurt terribly. And yet, it's still possible to do The Work on this situation, and watch the belief that something being gone means I will never be happy, or something being present means I need to hold on to it. Grace Bell, facilitator of The Work, assists people to identify and question their stressful ways of looking at life. She offers Year of Inquiry, a vibrant membership community of inquirers Sept-June each year. Learn more about Year of Inquiry at https://workwithgrace.com/year-of-inquiry Grace also has a special love for those suffering from eating issues including disordered eating (disordered thinking) of all kinds--having suffered from this behavior and thought/feeling process herself and finding an unshakable peace within around eating, food, health and behaviors with eating. Grace works with all kinds of compulsions, habits and addictions as they are all the same thing: a pull to some behavior, substance or activity in order to help us with our stressful feelings and thoughts. As Byron Katie offers us (founder of The Work); when we believe what we think, it creates unnecessary suffering. When we question what we think, we feel lighter and less serious about what is. We even begin to laugh. We notice who we really are is peaceful already, a human being living life as best we can--learning, growing, loving. In the public sessions on this youtube channel, we have all-group inquiry sessions called First Friday Inquiry, we have interviews with practitioners of The Work, we have Eating Peace videos (on the eating peace playlist) and we have individual sessions in The Work by courageous people willing to be recorded for Peace Talk podcast and this channel. Thanks to everyone involved in what is shared here on this channel, as it is great service to others in the world who find their way here and who are curious about life without "believing" thought all the time. In all-group sessions and solo sessions, we begin with a judgment...and move into the four questions and turnarounds. Willingness to be real and honest with your thinking is the first powerful step in The Work. No one ever has to share when attending Friday Inquiry, and thank you when you do. Before I start this week's guest intro, I just want to flag that this episode is a very emotional one and might not be a comfortable listen for anyone in the early stages of grief, as it deals with the loss of a child. My amazing and brave guest for this episode is Eileen Loughlin. Eileen is a mother of four gorgeous children, from ages 20 all the way to just two years old. Five and a half years ago, Eileen and her family's life was turned upside down when a tragic accident at their home led to the death of their youngest child at the time Annabel, who was just 3 and a half when she passed away. Eileen talks to me today about Annabel's short but happy life, her grieving process, the support that has seen her through and her hopes for her three living children as they move through their lives. She also tells me that there are plans in motion for a way to remember Annabel and build a legacy through which she can live on in memory. A gut-wrenching listen for me as the mother of a child the same age as Annabel, but for anyone experiencing loss, this could be a really helpful and hopeful episode. I'll be back next week with more. It is no coincidence that their son's name is Judah which means praise. Julia's son, Kyle, died by suicide at age 22. Steph found her on the writer platform, Substack, where she writes about mental illness, suicide, and alternative treatments for depression. She wrote about recent statistics: “Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people in the US — those ages 10 to 14 and 25 to 34.” Did you know that nearly 800,000 people a year die by suicide worldwide? How do we change this number? Could an answer be to bring more awareness to alternative treatments, methods, and therapies? We discuss this in-depth in the episode. Julia wants more awareness of a topic we do not talk about enough. So here we are, doing what we can. This episode may be hard to hear but it's important for us to listen. We discuss her experience working with doctors and the healthcare system when it comes to mental illness and how she would do it differently if she had another chance with Kyle today.
