In the 1920's and 30s, shark attacks off the coast of New South Wales, Australia were not an especially uncommon event. In 1935, however, Sydney's peaceful coastal charm was shattered by a grotesque discovery at the Coogee Aquarium that was anything but normal. A captured tiger shark, put on public display, vomited up a human arm—severed, tattooed, and unmistakably out of place. What began as a curiosity quickly spiraled into a chilling murder mystery involving gangsters, betrayal, and a body that was never found. SOURCES Roope, Phillip & Meagher, Kevin (2020) Shark Arm. On Christmas Day 1933, the discovery of a decayed corpse and a 'human glove' of skin led to incredible forensic work and a murder trial that'd result in a second mysterious murder. On April 17, 1935, a fisherman hooked a small shark off Coogee Beach in Australia. Then a 13-foot, or four-meter, tiger shark swallowed the smaller shark, allowing itself to be caught by the hook as well. The fisherman just so happened to own an aquarium and decided the tiger shark would be his new attraction. But the small shark wasn't the only thing the large tiger shark had gobbled up, though. Something the predator ate didn't agree with it and would soon come back up.SOURCESThe Shark Arm Case - By Vince Kelly https://www.vice.com/en/article/qv3eyw/australias-weirdest-unsolved-murder-case-began-with-a-shark-coughing-up-a-human-armhttps://sharkattackfile.net/spreadsheets/pdf_directory/1935.04.25-SharkArmCase.pdfhttps://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/true-stories/how-severed-arm-regurgitated-by-tiger-shark-led-to-murder-mystery/news-story/183aa1246bdaa589cbc4b28965c04c1a

Sorry for the lateness of this, but you should expect that by now... The Shark Arm Murders refer to a notorious criminal case that took place in Sydney, Australia, in 1935. The case gained significant media attention due to its bizarre and macabre nature. In April 1935, a large tiger shark was caught in the waters near Coogee Beach. When the shark was displayed at the Coogee Aquarium Baths, it vomited out a human arm with a rope tied around its wrist. The arm was promptly identified as belonging to James Smith, a missing ex-boxer and small-time criminal. April 25th: Shark Arm Murder Arm Regurgitated (1935) Some stories are stranger than others. Almost strange enough that it's hard to imagine it's not a work of fiction. On April 25th 1935 an arm was regurgitated by a shark in an Australian aquarium and opened a murder case that remains unsolved even today. *Suggested by Ashley Morris* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shark_Arm_case, https://dictionaryofsydney.org/entry/shark_arm_murder_1935, https://dictionaryofsydney.org/entry/shark_arm_murder_1935, https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/648979/shark-arm-murder-case-australia, https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/true-stories/how-severed-arm-regurgitated-by-tiger-shark-led-to-murder-mystery/news-story/183aa1246bdaa589cbc4b28965c04c1a, https://strangeremains.com/2018/07/23/the-shark-arm-murder-mystery-that-shocked-australia/, https://www.snopes.com/articles/384599/shark-tattooed-human-arm-australia/, https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/16922295/tiger-shark-vomited-human-arm-murder-mystery-australia/
Subscriber-only episodeThis is one of the craziest stories that we have covered. It takes place over the course of a few weeks in Sydney, Australia in 1935. A shark was captured and placed on display in a tank. The shark threw up an arm, with a distinct tattoo. This led investigators to a missing person, which turned into a murder investigation. When investigators started narrowing in on a suspect, he attempted to take his own life, when that didn't work, he led cops on a boat chase (yes, a boat chase). Once he was caught, things in the case changed drastically...Support the show

Visitors to a Sydney Aquarium on Anzac Day 1935 were horrified to witness the frenzy of a shark disgorging its stomach contents into its tank. Along with the usual debris of the sea - a half-eaten shark, some fishing line and a fish carcass or two - was the unusual sight this day would become known for: a single, human hand with a rope trailing around it, floating up from the mess. Think you know the story? Guess again. Join Holly and Matthew as they look into one of Australia's most famous depression-era cases, and the twists that kept it in the public eye for decades.

Have you heard about that time a tiger shark regurgitated a human arm in the Coogee Aquarium? It was the afternoon of April 26th, 1935, when the largest shark ever in captivity (we're calling her Shirley) spewed up a full human arm in front of a dozen witnesses. The arm bore a distinctive tattoo & was identified as belonging to a known Sydney criminal named Jimmy. There are lots of twists & turns in this story & even a high speed boat chase, but how Jimmy's arm ended up in Shirley's stomach (and what happened to the rest of him) still remains a mystery to this day. Covering TWO unsolved cases in this episode, both taking place in the 1930's with the theme of dismemberment. Cleveland, Ohio was gripped by fear of the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run as he littered a small shantytown with body parts of his 13 victims. In Australia there was a murder uncovered because a shark happened to spit up a HUMAN ARM. Shortly after it was stated that the arm was not bitten off by the shark but crudely cut off with a knife, so the investigation began. When a shark vomited up a tattooed arm in the Coogee Aquarium in 1935, onlookers were horrified. This arm would be the catalyst for exposing the seedy underbelly of Sydney’s grimy and cut throat crime scene. Phillip Roope and Kevin Meagher sit down with Jessie Stephens to explore the shark arm case. Together, the former high school history and english teachers collaborated on the book Shark Arm; A Shark, A Tattooed Arm, and Two Unsolved Murders, exposing one of the most baffling and fascinating cases in the history of Australia’s early 20th century crimes. Time to get bogan drunk on XXXX and travel back in time to the seedy criminal underbelly of Sydney, New South Wales. How did a human arm end up in the belly of a 4 meter Tiger shark? According to Jack it must've been some sort of sordid homoerotic criminal love triangle. It's just science basically. In 1935 a shark in an Australian aquarium vomited up a human forearm, a bizarre turn of events that sparked a confused murder investigation. This week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast presents two cases in which a shark supplied key evidence of a human crime. We'll also learn about the Paris Herald's obsession with centigrade temperature, revisit the scary travel writings of Victorian children's author Favell Lee Mortimer, and puzzle over an unavenged killing at a sporting event. Allan McLane Hamilton's 1910 biography The Intimate Life of Alexander Hamilton (Hamilton appeared for the United Insurance Company in the case). It's confirmed in Xavier Maniguet's 2007 book The Jaws of Death: Sharks as Predator, Man as Prey. Apparently both the "shark papers" and the shark's jaws were put on public display afterward and are now in the keeping of the Institute of Jamaica; I gather the case made a sensation at the time but has largely been forgotten.
