Dr Dan O' Neill, Associate Professor in Companion Animal Epidemiology at Royal Veterinary College, joins us to discuss the latest research from VetCompass on comparing three ‘designer' cross breeds namely the Cavapoo, Cockapoo and the Labradoodle on whether they are healthier than their ‘pure bred' parts. Revealing to some surprise that these three mixes are indeed no healthier than their pedigree parents, we chat about bias, stigma and trends that influence dog owners.  We discuss the shift in dog ownership towards these new ‘breeds', in the wake of much discussion on the health limiting over-exaggerated features of some pedigrees that has caused a shadow to fall across all purebreds. Dr Dan is passionate about ‘Innate Health' which simply means dogs should be able to express themselves as dogs being able to breathe, run, and communicate as a dog is meant to! We discuss the work that Vet Compass is doing to paint a picture, a Demo-graph, on all aspects of modern post-pandemic dogs and their owners, including husbandry, which is coming soon! This episode unpacks the phenomenon of the quarter-life crisis, a pivotal yet often misunderstood stage in young adulthood. Today I'm talking with the researchers who recently published a paper that's been getting a lot of social media buzz. The paper's title is "The doodle dilemma: How the physical health of ‘Designer-crossbreed' Cockapoo, Labradoodle and Cavapoo dogs' compares to their purebred progenitor breeds." This interview was a big party featuring Gina Bryson, the first author on the paper, as well as two researchers from Royal Veterinary College, Dr Rowena Packer, and Dr Dan O'Neill, who has been a guest on the podcast before. Gina, Rowena, and Dan walked me through what the paper does and does not tell us about the health of some specific common crosses compared to the parent breeds, and also let me know about additional data that they collected that we'll be seeing in some future papers from the group. A quick side note that they refer a few times to the RVC, which is the Royal Veterinary College, the institution where they work. And another side note - I've started going by my middle name, Perry, because I like it better. My pronouns are still she/her. You'll hear Dan call me Perry a few times during this episode and I didn't want anyone to be confused by that. Jessica is still my legal and professional name - if it helps to contextualize, you can think of Perry as a nickname. On with the episode! Hello and Welcome to The Thirteen Hour Life Coach Podcast, Season 8 - GEN ZPodcast https://lnkd.in/eAfVJPmADue to parents reaching to out to me asking for help with their teenagers I am glad to announce that on 6.3.23 I am speaking to; Pippa Simou who is a Psychologist and Specialist ADHD Coach ….and we talk about girls, the GENERATION Z from the ages of 13-19. I wanted to talk with Pippa about girls going under the radar with ADHD. We open up the episode to suggest that:Girls typically internalise their behaviour. # That girls „hold everything inside“# Particularly In the teen years females in this age group are massively affected by hormone fluctuations (much more than males). #„Early Doors“ (Nursery - Kindergarten) girls just „want to fit“….Observe and mimic but don't understand why they do it …so the differences are not picked up….and this carries on with them in later years (GEN Z)..This is a great episode and we disentangle so much in this episode. You can't miss it. More about Pippa:Pippa Simou has a professional background in education and decided to leave teaching in 2016 as she needed more flexibility to support her own children, who both have ADHD with their learning and other aspects of their development. She  joined a team at local charity that supports parents and professionals who live or work with children who have ADHD / ASD where she was a coach and trainer. During this period, Pippa came to understand that She too is an ADHDer and was diagnosed aged 44.  This experience confirmed of the lack of support for ADHD adults, and in particular a lack of targeted services for women with the condition. The female experience can be quite different and does require specialist understanding. She then started ‘The ADD-vantage' in 2020, offering support services specifically to women and girls with ADHD symptoms because she is passionate about using her experience to help them understand their ADHD, and in particular to grow into their symptoms and learn to see ADHD as a strength, fuelling their success. She delivers this through one-to-one personal coaching, workplace support, educational consultancy, facilitating the QbCheck, free workshops and regular online chat group. She has two teenage children – the eldest has begun her University adventure, and the youngest is in Yr 13, navigating his Alevels.Pippa lives in Hertfordshire, in the UK, with her  husband and faithful four-legged buddy – Oscar the Cockapoo. She loves baking, hosting friends and family, eating out, rambling in the countryside and exploring new places.Pippas Links:www.theadd-vantage.co.ukFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theADDvantageInstagram: @theaddvantage_Linkedin: Pippa Simou Twitter: @PippaADDvantage

Michelle and Liz are joined in this episode by Marianne Jones, to discuss why so many women burn out during midlife, which is exactly what happened to Marianne. She is an award-winning editor, writer, podcaster, and brand & content director who works with the nation's biggest newspapers and magazines. About 18 months ago, Marianne ended up in A&E and was told she needed to take a significant period off work to recover from burnout. It was tough to do, but the change resulted in a more balanced and positive way of living and has created new opportunities. Midlife burnout is becoming increasingly common, particularly for women. To the point where the World Health Organization (WHO) has now recognised the issue. Marianne talks about what happened to her, and how working from home and letting work define who she was contributed to the situation. She also shares the steps she has taken to recover and build a more balanced life. KEY TAKEAWAYS  The lines between work and home have become increasingly blurred, making it harder to switch off. Being constantly stretched and frenetically busy takes a huge toll on your physical health. Being tired but so wired you can´t fall asleep is a big warning sign. If people around you notice changes in your behaviour or worry you are too stressed, listen to them. It is OK to stop and take a break. In fact, it is essential. Throughout the day decompress, Marianne shares several ways to do that. Midlife is a good time to pause, take stock, and start to do things differently. Don´t miss out on the chance to take some of the pressure off and enjoy life more. BEST MOMENTS  “Covid has blurred the lines a lot between home and work life.” “Your body just cannot cope, at this stage of life, with what your mind is going through.” “It just felt like I had woken up one day having been flung off a fairground ride onto a sofa with hypertension and the Cockapoo.” “You're still using your skills and abilities, but just not doing so much.” If you enjoyed this episode, please rate, and review it on your podcast platform.  We read every email sent to us at twowomenchatting@gmail.com so please get in touch! In this part two of Corinne's conversation with Denver Paw School's owner and training manager, they to discuss why your doodle still continues to need training, even as an adolescent and an adult. Training and learning don't stop once they've finished one puppy socialization class. That would be like your pulling your kid out after kindergarten and saying, "You've got your letters. You learned enough.""With my now teenager, if I stopped addressing his learning needs at kindergarten, and even if I just kept reinforcing that kindergarten level, he'd be great at knowing his letters. But by raising the level of enrichment and stimulation and growth and connection by working on that training together, my dog and I are still growing and solidifying our connection together." - Corinne GearhartThey discuss why that's so important and what's going on when you have an adolescent doodle that knew how to sit or go into a down stay or not pull on the leash... And suddenly it seems like they forgot it all. What is going on? They're here to share with you and let you know. If you want to know how to find a great facility, great training program, or a solid trainer, listen to part one of this interview, Episode 13. There, Denver Paw School shares with people all over the world the red flags to look for, when to run, and what to feel great about when you find  a facility or a training programOn this part 2 of our interview, the adolescent doodle questions will be addressed include: - What is a dog's teenage phase?- Is it normal for an adolescent dog to have increased reactivity, barking, jumping, biting, poor impulse control, or to stop listening?- If they are more reactive or harder to control, should we stop socialization or going to public places?- How do I find adolescent dog training classes near me?- Why is my teenage dog driving me crazy and won't listen?Sometimes there are doodles that struggle with overstimulation, like just absolutely over-aroused. Continuing on with socialization might be counterintuitive. But actually, if it's regimented and controlled in a way, I think that it can start to address some of those over-arousal situations." - Kathy Thorpe"And I think that's probably one of the biggest things with teenagers is that some days they're like... super responsive and responding to every cue and look like a model citizen and they look like an adult dog. And then yes, the next day it's like, where did that dog go?  And it's all the rewiring, the brain is under construction." - Colleen TekampChapters: -3:47 Working with adolescent doodles-6:14 Teenage issues aren't your fault!-6:52 Is socialization still needed at this age?-9:42 Doodle's Extended Puppyhood & Adolescence-13:54 Human side of the leash-18:28 What if we do drop out after puppy kindergarten?Take our fun and free Doodle Personality Quiz! Today I have a special replay of a past episode with my guest Kim Greco of Paws and Possibilities, where we talked about what's really involved in owning a dog. This episode is dedicated to Biscuit, our beloved Cockapoo of 13 years who we just lost recently. Shortly after I recorded the original episode with Kim, we found out that Biscuit had terminal cancer. He was the first dog we owned, and it was one of the most enriching and fabulous experiences we could have as Biscuit really taught us what it meant to be man's best friend and what unconditional love looks like. I hope Biscuit is up there catching so many treats. This one is for you buddy, we love you… ******* Kim Greco is the owner of Paws and Possibilities and creator of the online dog training program Manners Matter, is a dog trainer for people who want to be proud of their dog, not embarrassed by them. Through her unique training system, you'll create the relationship with your dog you've always dreamed about— all while feeling like it's a walk in the park. When she's not teaching your dog good manners, you can find Kim hot on the salsa dance floor or reminiscing about how fun it was to train dolphins. This is an important conversation to have, because when people move to the suburbs and have more space and a bigger yard, often the idea of adding a dog to the family is a common one. We discuss a lot of topics in this episode, and if something we touched on is of particular interest to you, let me know and I'll have Kim back for a future episode to dive in deeper on your question!   Owning dogs is a big undertaking, but as I know from personal experience, it is so worth it. I hope this episode helps give you some insight and tools that you can use on a daily basis with your own pet!   My accessory course has finally launched! In this course I reveal my secrets, tips and tricks in a simple video course that's broken up into modules. We're on a mission to help one million people RISE by 2030 - join the movement at www.myrise.co.uk You may be aware that we have a dog. Jessie her name is. A nearly 18 month old Cockapoo. I'll be honest, we haven't trained her anywhere near as well as we could have. She's generally fine when you have her concentration but much too easily ‘lose her' to a squirrel or something else exciting. I'm nearly always the first one up and downstairs. I come into the kitchen and let her out while I have my breakfast and and a coffee and, perhaps, do some work. She doesn't bother me at all. She hears the next person starting to come down the stairs and she starts to twitch. Excitement building. She's pacing up and down, turning in circles starting to yap. That person comes in and she's jumping up at them and about to explode with excitement. Bothering them, scratching them and generally annoying them. “Jessie. Stop. Will you get down. Stop. Jessie. No!” Whilst reaching down and engaging with her. Maybe picking her up for a cuddle. To “make her stop”. Jessie, of course, doesn't speak English. She just knows that when she behaves that way, it gets her exactly the response she wants. Irrespective of the words that are accompanying it. Overall, I spend by far the most time playing and bonding with her. She behaves best for me overall. It's not that she doesn't like me and doesn't want my attention in the morning. She's just learned that that behaviour doesn't get the desired response with me. Waiting calmly until I'm ready to engage her on my terms does. It's human nature to not realise how much we are training others to behave in a certain way with our actions, irrespective of the words around them. Someone offers us cake at work (other places we can actually go to now are available) and we say “no” a few times then give in and have it? We're just teaching them to keep asking. Same with any food or drink. Always say “No” the first four times then “Yes” on the fifth? We're teaching them to ask five times. Change what we do because people say stuff like “Stop being boring” or “You're making me feel bad” or “You're no fun anymore”…………. Then we're just teaching them to say that again next time. Irrespective of what we say at the time. People around us behave the way they do to us because we've taught them that that's ok. Not through our words. But our actions. How we respond to that behaviour. This doesn't mean we can't eat cake (or anything else). We can do whatever we like. We're all grown ups. But, when we're clear and consistent with those around us about how it's ok to interact with us………….. That ‘flabotaging' can quickly become a thing of the past. Much love, Jon ‘Van Halen' Hall

In this episode we get an update on some of the cases Kim has seen in the last couple of days. We discuss wobble boards vs. wobble cushions. And we hear how well a Cockapoo with a suspected partial cruciate ligament tear is doing.   We also chat about the benefits Kim sees of providing her physiotherapy and rehab services to dogs in their home environment.   Some terms Kim mentions:   Syringomyelia when talking about one of her Pug patients. You can find out more about this condition here.   FCE: this is a fibrocartilaginous embolism. There is a blockage of the blood supply to part of the spinal cord. The result is loss of function of that part of the spinal cord. It is a problem from which dogs can recover.   Cranial cruciate ligament: this is the key ligament in the knee of the dog (cat, human etc.).
