A mysterious figure in a wide-brimmed hat and trench coat has been appearing in bedrooms across the world for centuries — and scientists are uncovering disturbing patterns in who sees him and why.*No AI Voices Are Used In The Narration Of This Podcast*Take the Weird Darkness Survey: https://take.supersurvey.com/QGZCRXPVSIN THIS EPISODE: Thousands of people across dozens of countries have reported waking paralyzed in the night, staring at the same featureless figure in a wide-brimmed hat standing in the corner of their room. The trail of documented evidence behind who he is — and where he came from — runs through classified government files, unexplained refugee deaths, and a common allergy medication sold at every pharmacy in America. (The Hat Man: Why Thousands See The Same Ominous Figure In Their Bedrooms) *** Scientists are strapping heart rate monitors on haunted house visitors, equipping them with skin conductance sensors, and running them through chainsaw-wielding pig-men in abandoned factories — and what they're finding about why humans deliberately seek out terror is reshaping how we understand fear, anxiety, therapy, and the human brain itself. Turns out the people walking voluntarily into the dark may be onto something the rest of us haven't figured out yet. In this episode, I sit down with #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Jackson for a candid conversation about building a decades-long writing career. Lisa shares how she got her start in 1980 after a Time magazine article sparked the idea to write romance with her sister, Nancy Bush—back when manuscripts began on a manual typewriter. Together, we talk about rejection, shifting editors, changing publishers, and the mindset required to keep going when the “wolf is at the door.” Lisa also breaks down her writing approach, why she needs strong character motivation, how she handles editorial feedback without losing her voice, and the best advice she'd give her younger self. Main pointsOpenAI's Financial Instability: OpenAI is facing a catastrophic financial burn of approximately $15 million daily, with projected losses exceeding $14 billion in 2026. This is coupled with a mass exodus of key leadership (CTO, Chief Research Officer, and Chief Scientist) and a massive $134 billion lawsuit from Elon Musk. The Component Crisis & Market Saturation: OpenAI's hoarding of GPUs, RAM, and SSDs has caused consumer prices to skyrocket (e.g., DDR5 RAM jumping from $300 to over $1,000). Despite this, newer models like GPT-5 are reportedly disappointing users, while Google's Gemini has surged to 650 million monthly active users. The "Agent" Marketing Myth: An internal Google playbook reveals that 99% of "AI Agents" currently on the market are merely "marketing buzzword packaging" consisting of simple API calls. True autonomous agents require a rigorous "AgentOps" infrastructure—including four-layer evaluation frameworks and security protocols—that most startups currently lack.Unsustainable Infrastructure & Economics: Experts warn that the AI bubble mirrors the 2008 housing crash. The "fundamental math" is failing: energy and capital costs are quintupling while performance gains diminish, requiring OpenAI to generate $2 trillion in annual revenue (15x current growth) just to remain viable. The AI Layoff Wave: Significant job cuts are being attributed to AI restructuring and automation, with 245,000 tech jobs lost in 2025. Major 2026 layoffs include 48,000 at UPS due to automation and 30,000 corporate roles at Amazon, signaling a shift from human capital to AI integration.Referenced X Users @BoringBiz_@nitinthisside_ @anon_opin
It's appalling that Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of a nation with the history of the once-Great Britain, is currently not simply groveling before China's Communist Emperor Xi Jinping. He's actively appeasing freedom's mortal enemy. Last week, the U.K. approved a vast new Chinese embassy in London. Now, Starmer wants Parliament to bless a disastrous deal likely to result in the Chinese taking over a strategic U.S. military installation called Diego Garcia. Dozens of influential British and American patriots are issuing today a powerful public statement opposing this unforced error of epic proportions. Coming in the wake of Canada's odious “separate peace” with the Chinese Communist Party last week, London's pursuit of a new “special relationship” with Beijing can only further embolden Xi Jinping – and invite his aggression at the expense of Taiwan and what else is left of the Free World. This is Frank Gaffney.

On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss the latest restaurant industry news, including the surge in marketing and value deals from restaurant chains, Chick-fil-A's biggest marketing campaign ever, and red flags from smaller, regional chains across the U.S. First up is marketing news from across the restaurant industry, as 2026 has already seen high-profile chains like Chipotle push new marketing programs designed to drum up business. These programs include a lot of value deals, and Sam and Alicia discuss the dangers of restaurants pushing too hard into discounting and marketing partnerships, and how it can distract companies from excelling at their core offering. Next up is Chick-fil-A, which is celebrating the 80th anniversary of its original restaurant Dwarf House by rolling out its biggest marketing campaign ever. Alicia, who recently toured Chick-fil-A headquarters in Atlanta, walks through the scope of the campaign and she and Sam talk about how these efforts further solidify Chick-fil-A as a leader in the space. Finally, managing editor Leigh Anne Zinsmeister joins for the “extra serving” portion of the episode to talk about regional restaurant chains and recent closures — from Salad & Go and Houlihan's, among others — as well as bankruptcies from Compass Coffee and Taste of Belgium. For more on these stories: Chipotle continues its marketing barrage, this time with EA SportsChick-fil-A is doubling down on its family-focused experiencesSalad and Go to exit Texas and Oklahoma as it closes 32 restaurants

Greg is back! Join Jim and Greg for the Monday 3 Martini Lunch as they break down Argentina's strong midterm results for President Javier Milei, Zohran Mamdani's disturbing comments on 9/11, and Gavin Newsom pretending to be mulling over a 2028 presidential bid.First, they cheer the impressive election results in Argentina, which give President Milei a stronger hand in the legislature and more time for his free-market reforms to show results. Jim also points out why this is a win for the U.S., especially Treasury Sec. Scott Bessent.Next, they shudder as New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani says suggests Muslims in the city have been treated poorly, including his aunt who allegedly stopped riding the the subway after 9/11 because she didn't feel safe wearing her hijab. Multiple reports cast serious doubt on the veracity of his story but Jim says Mamdani's comments seek to shift the narrative on who the real perpetrators and real victims were on 9/11. Will New York voters care? Finally, they chuckle as California Gov. Gavin Newsom claims he'll “think about” running for president in 2028 after the 2026 midterms. His every move suggests he decided to run a long time ago, but Jim says he has one big problem. Please visit our great sponsors:Cancel unwanted subscriptions and reach your financial goals faster with Rocket Money at https://RocketMoney.com/MARTINI Build your fall sanctuary of comfort with Boll and Branch. While we kick off Season 3, check out the killer horror anthology OMINOUS THRILL by Jeff Schmidt! Ominous Thrill is a multi-award winning anthology of dark fiction, horror, thrillers, and suspense brought to life with exceptional actors and vivid sound. It's like Black Mirror meets American Horror Story, where the monster is always close to home. Here's my favorite episode: SECRET IN SILVER FALLS When mysterious blasts rock the small town of Silver Falls in 1984, two nuclear engineers, and their teen daughter must confront suspicious townsfolk and survive the horrific results of their secretive work. This Cold War-era creature feature blends a bit of the horror classic “The Thing” with a sprinkle of “Annihilation,” a dash of “Them,” and a sprig of “Lovecraft Country.” Stir well, and enjoy! Ominous sex was on the menu tonight as the guys pick apart this weeks narratives. An OnlyFans model is desperate for love. RFK Jr. Get's slammed by big pharma's henchmen. China has a party for the whole worlf to see and CNN loved it. Not everyone was as impressed. Epstein victims speak up, kinda. A vascular surgen gets his rocks off by cutting off his legs and trying insurance fraud. that's okay, it was the UK where it happened. AFD party members randomly dying before the big election. Nothing suspicious about that. Tons to discuss. Even more to think about. @spreakerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/whiskey-hell-podcast--5683729/support.
In an ugly move, Fox News contacted Republican Senators and asked: Should President Trump deploy the National Guard in your states' blue cities? Fox News got back the answer it was trying to generate: GOP Senators actively want Trump to use the military in their states' urban areas, ostensibly to fight “crime.” This is an unnerving turn in the saga that makes Trump's threat look worse. Congressional Republicans expressly want Trump to employ troops to intimidate their own constituents, provided it's confined to largely Democratic areas—and they're saying this openly, egged on by Fox, making additional occupations more likely. Meanwhile, Democrats are consumed in a big debate over whether they can talk about this topic at all. We talked to media critic Jamison Foser, who has a good piece about all this on his newsletter, Finding Gravity. We discuss why the media is wrongly describing this as a political winner for Trump, what the polls actually say, and how the media storyline is encouraging Democrats' worst duck-and-cover instincts. Michael Wolff joins Joanna Coles to unpack the surreal world of Jeffrey Epstein—from the salons of Manhattan's elite to the shadowy corners of MAGA conspiracy. Wolff, who cultivated Epstein as a source and planned to have breakfast with him the morning after his arrest, reveals the financier's deep ties to figures like Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, and Bill Gates. He shares the eerie final message Epstein sent Wolff before his death—and challenges both the suicide narrative and the murder theory. Wolff debunks the myth of a “client list,” critiques the DOJ's recent denial of foul play, and exposes the hypocrisy of right-wing figures like Kash Patel and Dan Bongino, who once demanded answers and now run the very agency saying there's “nothing to see.” He also examines Epstein's enigmatic financial empire, his influence over powerful men, and the unspoken role Trump's inner circle may play in concealing the case.
