Alice Kyteler was the first woman to be tried for witchcraft in Ireland and her servant, Petronilla of Meath, was the first to be burned for heresy. Kyteler's stepchildren with her three deceased husbands accused Kyteler of being a black widow my supernatural means and sought to use Pope John XXII's recent decree that sorcery was a heresy to rid themselves of their stepmother once and for all.

In this week's Bonus Episode, Martin and Eleanor conjure up the wild life story of the first witch condemned in Ireland.Part of the "Something Wicked" series about folkloric true crimes, they set the scene by discussing the history of Kilkenny within Ireland's five historic counties, then explore how a young Flemish immigrant managed to become one of the richest women in 13th century Leinster. With a bizarre biography including several court cases, four dead husbands, and allegations of macabre magical practices, her story then collides with that of a mad bishop hell-bent on punishing anyone who fails to recognise church authority - a man who, by chance, has just graduated from the Pope's brand new course in witch hunting... The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...With Bonus Episodes released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus a range of exclusive content on Patreon, audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. THE first Irish witch burning, and the first known record of a Coven in the world. PETRONILLA de Meath was tortured, interrogated and eventually burnt at the stake on the 3rd of November 1324, in Kilkenny. HER charge? Witchcraft. "AND though she was indeed herself an adept in this accursed art of theirs, she said she was nothing in comparison with her mistress, from whom she had learned all these things and many more." DE Meath was maidservant to Alice Kyteler, a woman whose Husbands all had the unfortunate habit of dying . . . soon after marrying her. WAS Kyteler: INNOCENT? MONEY-GRABBING? A WITCH? CULTURALLY, Irish witches are more commonly associated with Goddess figures, such as the Cailleach Beara (Learn more in our previous episode) than the iconic and horrific witch burning that plagued Europe and America from the 15th Century. IN FACT, for a superstitious nation, witch burning barely reached double digits in Ireland compared to the hundreds in continental Europe. WHY? The boys attempt to find out just THAT.

It's Halloween again, the air turns colder, the nights grow darker and spirits roam in the shadows. On this year's Halloween episode we are traveling to the Emerald Isle. In 1324 Kilkenny, Ireland witnessed it's first witchcraft trial and the first execution carried out by burning at the stake. Alice Kyteler was a popular, beautiful inn keeper who's husbands had a bad habit of dying mysterious deaths. Her fourth and final husband, certain Alice was poisoning him, told his children and the church. The zealous Bishop of Ossory, Bishop Ledrede, took up the case. He was a firm believer the devil walked among the people and made it his duty to banish evil. Ledrede beleived Alice Kyteler was not only a witch, but the leader of a coven of witches based in the Kilkenny area. Alice Kyteler had powerful allies from her four marriages and her successful business. When Bishop Ledrede tried to have her arrested the tables were turned and Ledrede was thrown in jail. When Ledrede was released from prison he resumed his case against Kyteler and her followers. The charges brought against Kyteler were murder, heresy, seeking advice from demons, sacrificing animals, making potions and having sexual relations with a demon. Serious charges to be sure. Could Ledrede prove them in court? Would Alice Kyteler be burned at the stake as a witch?

See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This episode was called Petronilla's Garden and it was our Season 1 finale!!! Focusing on the witch trials in Ireland (or lack there of) the cocktail that wrapped the season was inspired by the fate of Irish women accused of witchcraft! Brewed by ourselves, it was a 'herb-ful' concoction in which our resident mixologist Alex included; Aqua Vitae.  The original recipe belonging to the bad guy in our jam-packed finale still exists today, which we used! Take that Richard Ledrede! - we name our drink after one of your victims of 'justice'. Of the very few Irish witch trials recorded, Caoimhe & Laura focused on the first and last ones in Ireland; Alice Kyteler and the Islandmagee witches - what they were accused of and their punishments. What surprised us most though? - how coveted dairy products were in Ireland....one could argue they still are #bewarethebutterwitchYou can find all of our recipes for all of Season 1's cocktails on our Instagram @irishspiritspodcast You can follow us on Twitter @irishspiritspod or email us at: irishspiritspodcast@gmail.comIn preparing for our own depositions, the sourced we consulted were: Andrew Sneddon's Possessed by the Devil, Malt-Review.com, Punchdrink.com, https://www.spookyisles.com/ireland-witch-trials/, https://sites.google.com/site/supernaturaleire/irish-witch-trials , https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/people/witchipedia-ireland-s-most-famous-witches-1.3262008 , https://www.jstor.org/stable/24338815 Witchcraft belief and trials in early modern Ireland - Dr Andrew Sneddon, https://www.historyireland.com/medieval-history-pre-1500/the-sorcery-trial-of-alice-kyteler-by-bernadette-williams/, https://www.historyireland.com/volume-22/possessed-devil-real-history-islandmagee-witches-irelands-mass-witchcraft-trial/, Larissa Tracy ‘Torture & Brutality in Medieval Literature' & https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/158276553/ann-glover Thank you so much for listening to Irish Spirits Season 1 , let's pray to Lucifer and all of his ghouls that we will be reunited to drink together for Season 2! We've extended our stay across the water and bringing you a story from Ireland this week! Join us as Anastasia takes us on a bit of a history lesson and tells us the tale of Alice Kyteler, aka "The Merry Widow" or "The Witch of Kilkenny." Political intrigue, papal bulls, and accusations of the black arts are all front and center in this one. Aristocratic Alice Kyteler was one of the earliest known Irish women to be accused of witchcraft. Despised by her step children, and well as the local bishop of Ossory, she was accused of murdering her four husbands and of acquiring her wealth through the black arts. Dame Alice and her band of "devil worshipping" cohorts were accused and persecuted. The Bishop of Ossory was hellbent that he would bring this accused witch to trial and took every opportunity that he could to do so, nearly damning himself in the process. He had Dame Alice convicted in abesentia, but her story is only just beginning.... We've talked about the last witch burned in Ireland- Bridget Cleary- now join us for the first. It's not who you might think... Wait to Panic is a weekly podcast where two longtime friends take turns sharing stories that just might make your skin crawl. Niamh Boyce's debut novel, The Herbalist, a 'deeply moving and viscerally powerful novel about the lives of women in 1930s Ireland', was released back in 2013. Boyce's follow-up, Her Kind, the subject of this episode's conversation, is also a historical novel set in Ireland but we have to look much further back to the 14th century for the events that inspired it. The Kilkenny Witch Trial, while historically significant, has been neglected in fiction and Boyce's novel intends to shift the perspective to those central to the trial: Alice Kyteler and her servant Petronilla. Her Kind is published by Penguin Ireland - find out more, including where to buy the book, here (https://www.sublimehorror.com/herkind/) .

The city of Kilkenny was rocked by the notorious witchcraft trial of 1324 (covered in the last two episodes). These events took place seven centuries ago in the long distant past. To conclude the series on the trial embarked on my own witch hunt in the 21st century. I wanted to find if anything remained of the supposed witch Alice Kyteler who disappeared in 1324.I took a recorder and soon found myself in buildings Alice herself used to frequent. Over the course of a few days I was able to unearth numerous places and artefacts associated with Alice Kyteler giving you a unique insight into her notorious trial and the events surrounding it.Thanks to Grace Fegan, Elizabeth Keyes & Peter Kenny for their time and interviews. There is still four three tickets available for the Witchcraft Tour which visits all the locations assocaited with the trial. This podcast continues the fascinating tale of one of the first witchcraft trials in European history. It took place in Kilkenny in 1324.The previous episode (available here History-1-2 – Kilkenny-witchcraft-trial-part-i) explained the background to the trial. This show picks up the story as the trial and surrounding scandal began in March 1324. This would see the Bishop Ossory clash with Alice Kyteler and her powerful but dangerous allies. The consequences would be devastating for those caught in the middle. To accompany these podcasts I am organising a once off day long tour on April 20th 2019 to Kilkenny to visit the spectalar remains of the medieval city. This will be an interactive experience enhanced by listening devices so you will hear the sounds of the 14th century while standing in the places where this trial took place.Tickets which include private coach, entry into three paying sites, a walking tour of Kells priory and medieval Kilkenny cost €100. This also includes a meal.  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Growing up in Kilkenny I was surrounded by medieval history - its what drew me to study the past in the first place. One of the most famous or perhaps notorious incidents in Kilkenny's medieval history took place in 1324 when the Bishop of Ossory accused Alice Kyteler, a powerful merchant in the city, of heresy and witchraft. This sparked a lethal struggle in the town that would end in shocking brutality. This is the first of two podcasts on the trial. This show sets the scene by painting a picture of life in Kilkenny in the 1320s and introducing the main characters the next episode will follow the trial itself. To accompany these podcasts I am organising a once off day long tour on April 20th 2019 to Kilkenny to visit the spectalar remains of the medieval city.
