This week I sat down with one of our former coaches at Croga, Nick Ralston, for another chat about Endurance. If you haven’t listened to my first interview with Nick about Self Identity and Using Fitness to Experience the World, go check out episode 42.Additionally, in episode 45, Nick and I chatted about some endurance events he had participated in during the summer of 2019 and started scratching the surface of some of the nuance of endurance like self reflection, integrity, honor, mental limits and also physical limits that we’re going to dive deeper into today. The inspiration for the episode you’re listening to right now, episode 55, is actually a training book/journal that Nick sent me as a gift. The book is titled “Endurance” and is produced by a couple coaches named Mark Twight and Michael Blevins who are based out of Salt Lake City and run a business called NonProphet that produces training content, hosts Fitness Education Symposiums, is a private training facility and also the name of their very thought provoking podcast.Join us on our chat this week as we self reflect and discuss the first half of this book about the pieces of Endurance that are much deeper than the surface level nonsense most think of when they think about Endurance as a sport of distance running, cycling, swimming or some combination there of.Follow us on Instagram & Facebook @LionheartedPodcastFollow Coach Nick on Instagram @NickRalston05Learn more about NonProphet on Instagram @NonProphet  Music: https://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music

Sit with your back to the food if buffet style OR keep the food that's most tempting to you furthest away from you on the dinner table.6. Drink lots of water7. Minimize appetizers and try to only eat the ones unique to the holiday or special occasion8. The first bite tastes the same as the last (Coach Preston) so try to have smaller portions or just a few bites of things you NEED, but you know are not "good" for you.9. This week I sat down with our Croga Nutrition Coaching Staff (Cody, Meghan and Stephanie) to answer a bunch of questions form our newest set of clients and some frequently asked questions we’ve been asked over and over during our first year of nutrition coaching. The questions were very well rounded, including, how to weigh and measure food properly, how to get more protein, how much water to drink daily, carbs versus net carbs and how to log these foods and much more. And since there were four of us answering every question, the answers provided great insight and lots of different tips and tricks that should help you find something that works for you.We hope you enjoy the episode and if you are interested in one-on-one nutrition coaching or have additional questions you’d like us to answer, shoot us a DM on Instagram at @CrogaNutrition or shoot us an email to Nutrition@CrogaFitness.com and we’ll get your more info or get your questions answered in our next podcast.———————————Questions & Time Stamps3:45 - #1 - I currently find myself with extra carbs towards the end of the day. What are some good (maybe pre/post workout) snack ideas?9:40 - #2 - I would love a good high protein breakfast option that doesn’t include eating 6+ egg whites. I have mixed it up with “oatless oatmeal” but I get tired of it quick. Got any suggestions?16:28 - #3 - My clothes don't fit me as well anymore... With shelter in place, it doesn't matter as much (plus baggy is coming back in style). That said, do I buy clothes that fit me now? Or wait until I hit my target goal? And should I keep my current clothes in case I need them in the future?24:25 - #4 - Is it best to have more carbs earlier in the day or is the goal to split macros between 3 meals?29:10 - #5 - If you're cooking something with oil, such as roasted sweet potatoes with olive oil, for example, how do you count the oil - as the full amount used or a portion given that not all of the oil is absorbed by the cooked food?30:46 - #6 - How much water should a person drink?36:19 - #7 - Net carbs vs total carbs. I have tortillas that are 30 gr of carbs a piece but 25 of those are fiber and only 5 are considered “net” carbs (starch I presume). How should I log them? Net or gross?42:25 - #8 - If you go wildly over carbs or protein one day (ie 20-30percent over your macros because you ate out) are you best off doing which of the following: (1) Just writing that day off and continuing with the same macros the next day, (2) Trying to trade protein for carbs or carbs for protein if you can in any remaining meals. Ie if you are over protein by 15g then eating 15g less of carbs that day if you can (3) Compensating the next day by decreasing what you went over in (Ie if you went over in protein having a little less the next day)50:23 - #9 - I’m regularly over on my carbs and fat, but I think that’s because I eat out too often. I assume people who know what they are doing plan ahead to hit their macros? Is that what I should plan to do to be successful? And similar to Whitney, if you’re way off, what’s the best approach for the rest of the day or the day following?60:14 - #10 - We meal prepped but I don’t know how to count it. Can you help?Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lionheartedpodcast/Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LionheartedPodcast/Follow Croga Nutrition Powered by WAG on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/croganutrition/ Music: https://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music

This article was the perfect follow up to our conversation last week in episode 34 about the changes to the CrossFit.com main site and the overall change in focus of CrossFit HQ because it raised the questions of “who will we all look to as inspiration to help us dig a little deeper at the end of a workout?” Which is where we all know the most progress is made physically and mentally. And, “who will be the face of the sport that our kids look up to and pretend to be when they’re lifting weights, running laps and doing pull-ups? Who will be the Michael Jordan or Mia Hamm of CrossFit if we don’t remember to promote our sport as a sport?” As Justin said at the end of his blog post, “young athletes need to pin up posters of champions in their garages, imagining they’re going rep-for-rep with Mat Fraser; grabbing just one more before the time cap. The next generation needs to wake up hungry, hungry to compete, to grow, to sweat, to hurt, to earn it, and to win.” and Danny and I had a fun time chatting about how and why this is an important piece for the future of CrossFit. This week the boys sat down for a conversation about the exciting changes to the main site, aka CrossFit.com, that showed up on January 1st. As many of you know, this past fall CrossFit HQ announced a sort of shift in their focus, or at least in the outward facing content that they produce, from being mostly about The Games and the Sport of CrossFit to being more dedicated and focused on improving the health and wellness of as many human beings as possible. Not to say that this hasn’t always been the focus for almost everyone behind the scenes at CrossFit HQ and the focus of all Level 1 and above seminars, but what we’re seeing now is a shift in investment of time and resources to what Danny and I think is the correct bigger picture. This is a change that we’ve been talking about needed to happen for years and we’re very excited to see where this takes CrossFit as a training methodology and as a business. And, we’re even more excited to see how much bigger our reach as a healthy and happy community can be, to hopefully change the lives of millions more Americans and people all over the world. Ep 33: Gym Etiquette - Danny & Dave

This week the boys sat down for an episode filled with laughs about Gym Etiquette and what NOT to do when you’re traveling to another gym for the holidays. This one started as an idea on good behavior for your home gym, but because of the time of year and some of the things we’ve seen from visitors quickly developed into a survivors guide to being a good guest when you’re working out in someone else’s gym during the holidays. As I listened back on parts of this episode to jog my memory, I was hooked and just cracking up the whole time. So, even if you’re not someone that drops in to other gyms or doesn’t travel much, this episode is still filled with lessons on gym etiquette and hopefully we’ll make you laugh at least half as much as we made ourselves laugh during this episode. To be honest, they didn’t really have a plan for this episode, they just kind of went for it, but sometimes that produces the best content. Well…….funniest at least. Since Danny and Dave both started CrossFit they’ve been through more than a decade of holiday seasons, and they’ve stayed fit during them and also been very fat and happy during them, so this episode includes their tips and tricks from all the lessons they’ve learned the hard way. This week the boys sat down for a chat about one of my favorite training tools to make sure you’re doing what you should be doing mentally to get the most out of your training. The idea came from my coach, Kyle Ruth of Training Think Tank, and it is to give yourself a score from 1 to 10 in the categories of Intensity, Concentration and Effort after each training session and use this to determine if you gave each session everything you had. This was a new idea to Danny, so we used his workout from that morning as a sample and the result was fantastic. If your’e someone that’s been in a funk lately or ever and you’re looking for a way to re-focus and improve your training, I think this is one of the best ways to recalibrate. If you’re a coach, this is a great tool to use to empower your athletes and to help them self reflect on each training session. We hope you use it as just another tool to improve as an athlete and human!Follow us on Instagram & Facebook @LionheartedPodcast Music: https://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music

This week the boys sat down for a chat about the tough conversations and situations that CrossFit Coaches and Box Owners have to have or have to deal with. We touch on managing athlete expectations and keeping them safe, keeping the class moving smoothly and dealing with the chatty members as well as the over-eager ones, and finding a way to establish trust with the member that’s feeling a little down and out or going through something tough in life who’s negative energy is dragging down the class, but what they really need is just someone to talk to.This was an interesting conversation because as we had it Danny and I did a lot of self reflection and realized that there have been more than a few moments where we’ve been on the other side of almost all these conversations or made some of the mistakes we regularly have to correct as coaches. This is a great episode for box owners, coaches and athletes to learn from, I know I learned a ton about myself as an athlete and coach from having this conversation.
