This week's guest is Dr Luana Main, a Senior Lecturer in Applied Sport Science at Deakin University.  An athlete herself, Luana's research focuses on optimizing human performance and, in particular, finding the sweet spot between optimal load and overtraining.  She has applied this research in areas including elite sport and the military and talks with Ben and Tim about how we can all apply some of these same concepts in our day-to-day lives.   04:45       Luana's background – and the third-year uni lecture that sparked her lifelong interest in overtraining syndrome.  07:00       First of all – what is overtraining?! 08:20       There's a number of biomarkers associated with overtraining, but what are the subjective indications that someone might be overtraining?  (PS – based on Luana's response, there is potential that Tim is overtraining……) 09:30       Are subjective measures of diagnosing overtraining as effective as objective measures? 13:00       How can we get better at the basics, when it comes to lowering our steady state stress load? 14:40       Heart rate variability as a measure of stress 17:00       Discussion on wearables 20:55       What are the non-negotiables when it comes to improving performance?  And how exactly do we do these? 25:15       Luana's work with the military 29:30       The impact of overtraining on cognitive function 33:50       Luana on ‘the good, the bad and the ugly' of stress 39:00       What areas of research would Luana love to get into next? 41:20        What does Luana do for herself?   External Links The Stroop Test – give it a go! James Wild is a research & development and speed consultant with Harlequins Rugby Club and as a Lecturer in Applied Sport Science at the University of Surrey. Using a blend of physical preparation and biomechanics techniques with skill acquisition and motor learning principles, James has worked with coaches and athletes across a full spectrum of abilities, including medal winning teams and athletes at major international competitions. James is also a book author and has just completed his PhD in the biomechanics and motor control of team sport athletes during sprint acceleration. QUOTES “We have to remember the (sprinting) technique is not an end unto itself, but should be seen as part of opportunity to create external force expression… to fit with a performance objective” “Technique can potentially modify injury and pain whilst previous injury history and pain can also drive technique modifications as a coping strategy” “You will find some individuals have a high step rate and rely on faster step rate for faster sprints so working towards their strength is key for that individual but you might also find the opposite” “You'll find the strength characteristics of the athlete will underpin the technique they are adopting when sprinting” “I have previously investigated what effect resisted sprinting has on stride length or string frequency and for some individuals, it increases length, for others, it increases frequency and in some individuals, it hasn't changed anything” SHOWNOTES 1) James' journey into strength and conditioning and sprinting research 2) The key performance indicators of sprinting biomechanics and how to assess acceleration 3) Deciding if athletes are stride frequency or stride length reliant when sprinting and what to do with it 4) Different contexts (e.g., injury history, aptitude) around using kinematic data from sprint analysis 5) What to do if athletes are not getting faster from sprint interventions? 6) The three strength qualities that are relevant to sprint performance and how to test them 7) How and when to provide technique interventions with athletes 8) James' philosophy on using resisted sprinting work with athletes 9) Identifying opportunities for and then integrating speed work throughout a training week with athletes PEOPLE MENTIONED Aki Salo Ian Benzodis John Goodwin Pierre Samozino JB Morin Damien Harper

I'm very grateful for all the insight he shared regarding his approach to training extremely high caliber collegiate athletes.  And at the same time realized how simple the foundational structure the training principles are based upon. The real beauty is the art and nuance Tyler applies every day when working with his athletes. We dive into conversations regarding the nervous system and how to best approach stimulate the body to compete at the highest level. Tyler's approach may surprise many of you in that it looks almost completely opposite of what is taught in the classroom, but as he explains the process more in depth you begin to understand why it works so well. Recorded live on Tuesdays at 8pm (UK time) on the Sports Therapy Association Facebook Page , host Matt Phillips (creator of Runchatlive) brings guests from the Sports Therapy industry to answer YOUR questions and discuss topics chosen by YOU. In Ep.36 of the Sports Therapy Association Podcast,we are thrilled to announce that our special guest will be none other than Dr Tim Gabbett. With a PhD in Human Physiology and a second in Applied Sport Science, Dr. Gabbett has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles and has presented at over 400 national and international conferences. In a recent study of 8 million scientists published in PLoS Biology, Dr. Gabbett was named in the Top 25 most impactful sport scientists of all time. In this episode, Dr. Gabbett will be talking to us about the progression of training loads to minimize injury risk and enhance performance. Many of us are aware that when progressing an athlete from rehabilitation to peak performance, a balance exists between providing an adequate training stimulus to elicit performance benefits and minimizing the risk of injury. The question is, how can we determine how much training is too much? How soon can training loads be progressed following injury? How quickly can athletes return to competition? Enjoyed the episode? Please take a couple of minutes to leave us a rating & review on Apple Podcasts. It really does make all the difference in helping us reach out to a larger audience. iPhone users you can do this from your phone, Android users you will need to do it from iTunes. Whether it's to prevent injury or to rehabilitate an injury. If you've ever experienced a running injury and gone to see a physical therapist, they don't just stretch you, give you a massage and send you on your way. They will likely prescribe some strength training to develop functional strength in whatever muscle groups that have lost their ability to provide the correct function movement. If you've ever gone through the process of having a functional strength test and been prescribe strength training, a qualified PT will also make sure you are doing the exercise correctly. Take the video of the week with the 1/4 box squat as an example. Note how the knee tracks straight in the example demonstrated by Tom. If you have weak glutes, you may find that your knee collapses. If that happens, either use a lower height step or use a hand rail. If you don't have a exercise step, use the stairs in your house or office and grab onto the handrail for support. Watch your knee tracking in the mirror or look down at your knee to make sure it stays aligned with your ankle and hip joints. As you continue to do the exercise regularly, you will begin to get stronger. When you see that you are able to perform the exercise correctly for the full set, you can graduate yourself to either a higher step or remove the crutch of the hand rail. This week the boys got to interview Dave's coach for the last 4 years, Kyle Ruth of Training Think Tank. Kyle is one super smart dude that, as you’ll learn in this episode, became obsessed with how the human body works and how to drive the performance of athletes at age 15 when he had his first experience with high level athletics after qualifying for junior nationals in swimming. He swam throughout college at The University of Indiana where he got his bachelor of science in Exercise Physiology and followed it up with a Master’s of Applied Sport Science, which unbeknownst to him at the time would lead perfectly into being a Remote Coach for high level athletes in CrossFit and other sports all over the world. He’s a 4-time CrossFit Regional Individual competitor as well and he works out of the Training Think Tank headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. They dove deep into all kinds of stuff in this episode from remote coaching, the Training Think Tank educational series, some training and mental tips that Kyle has seen help push his athletes over the edge or take the next step, some other training secrets that he usually only gives to paying clients, haha, and just had some good old fashioned conversation about life, CrossFit and this year’s Open and upcoming Regionals.
