"How can a movement of such enormous import stir such little interest? It doesn't make sense that the pull-up doesn't inspire the same discussion, analysis, and overall attention that so many other movements do like the bench press and squat." - Greg Glassman

Melissa Urban is a bestselling author and the founder of the Whole 30 nutrition program, known for her transformative journey from an unhealthy lifestyle to becoming a leader in health and wellness. Born in New Hampshire and raised in a close-knit Portuguese Catholic family, Melissa struggled with a five-year drug addiction in her early 20s. After her second stint in rehab, she made the decision to completely overhaul her life, starting with exercise and healthier habits. Her recovery journey began at a gym, where she joined a running group that helped her see herself as a healthy person. This mindset shift was crucial in maintaining her sobriety. Melissa's fitness journey evolved from running to triathlons, kettlebells, and eventually CrossFit, where she became deeply involved, even owning a gym and contributing to the CrossFit Journal. In 2009, inspired by her CrossFit experience, Melissa created the Whole 30 as a personal experiment. The program quickly gained popularity, leading her to quit her insurance job in 2010 to focus on it full-time. She relocated to Utah and began holding seminars across the country, marking the start of Whole 30 as a thriving business. Today, the program has expanded into a widely recognized brand, with partnerships with companies like LaCroix and Chipotle. Melissa continues to spread the Whole 30 message through social media and her writing, while enjoying life in Salt Lake City, Utah. She remains focused on helping others discover what works best for their health through the Whole 30 program and is dedicated to staying flexible and open to new opportunities.

The news exploded while lives on air. We talk a swing a miss from Hiller, Mal annouces she's out for another season and what a better warm up really is in CrossFit. Written by Greg Glassman, Published April 2003 "In commercial gyms everywhere, warming up constitutes little more than spending fifteen or twenty minutes on a bike, treadmill, or stair climber. While better than nothing, this approach to warming up is largely a waste of time in that it will not improve flexibility, does not involve the whole body or major functional movements, misses an ideal opportunity for reinforcing and practicing some critical exercises, and poorly prepares an athlete for rigorous athletic training." - Greg Glassman
Written by Greg Glassman, Published March 2003 "It is CrossFit's contention that cops and soldiers are professional athletes. In fact, we argue that the physical preparedness required of military combat - and by extension law enforcement - matches and regularly surpasses that required of Olympic athletes." - Greg Glassman
The final event of the CrossFit OffSeason has completed and we are talking about it. Sydney Michalyshen and William Leahy IV are the winners. What does that mean for them going into the season. We talked with Boz this week and dive into that conversation. What did we learn, what is to come and any other nuggets we found interesting.
Written by Greg Glassman, Published March 2003 "The push-up, long a favorite among junior high school P.E. teachers and Marine Corps drill instructors, is for many, more closely associated with punishment than anything else. Though common to group exercise programs, its use in serious strength and conditioning regimens is infrequent." - Greg Glassman
Written by Greg Glassman, Published 2003 "Our kids and our seniors squat, deadlift, push-press, push-jerk, clean and jerk, snatch, pull-up, dip, push-up, bench press, back/hip extend, sit-up, and rope climb. Less weight, fewer reps, more rest, whatever is required to allow exposure to the movements at a challenging but tolerable and intensity is all that is needed to accommodate most special needs."

- Pat & Adrian discuss a CrossFit Journal article entitled “Foundations”.- This article was published in April 2002. It is full of useful information & explanations of methods that hold true even though 20 years have gone by.
“My first Fran time was just over 20 minutes. It's better now, but strict L-sit pull-ups, probably three thrusters at a time … but I just kept doing (CrossFit) because I realized, hey, whatever I've been doing wasn't helping me up until this point, so I need to do more of this stuff.”Long-time member of the CrossFit staff Dave Eubanks joins the podcast to share his story of finding CrossFit, working his way up to Senior Manager of Competition, and balancing the criticism that comes with leading scoring.Eubanks — who was a personal trainer at the time — first found CrossFit in 2007 through a short blurb in a magazine he picked up while waiting for his grandmother to get her bloodwork done. He spent the weekend reading the CrossFit Journal and was hooked.Eubanks took his Level 1, opened an affiliate, and then pursued his Level 2, which led to a position on the Seminar Staff. After success in other roles within the space, he was asked to head Scoring for the CrossFit Games. In addition to leading the competition team, managing video submissions, and reviewing scores during the Games season, Eubanks has also been a prominent figure in creating the new Worldwide Ranking System.Listen in as Eubanks reminisces about his experience training CrossFit for the first time, shares stories from his Level 1 and Level 2 courses, being taught by well-known names like Nicole Carroll and Todd Widman, and details his CrossFit career.Learn how CrossFit and the competition team are working toward growing and progressing the sport, and providing athletes and the community with a great experience through all stages of competition.
"The template is engineered to allow for a wide and constantly varied stimulus, randomized within some parameters, but still true to the aims and purposes of CrossFit as described in the “What is Fitness?” issue. Our template contains sufficient structure to formalize or define our programming objectives while not setting in stone parameters that must be left to variance if the workouts are going to meet our needs. That is our mission – to ideally blend structure and flexibility." - Greg Glassman

I haven't been this excited about a coach's body of work since reading the original CrossFit Journal articles by Greg Glassman in 2005. Rich Diaz's work in the endurance community and his unique protocol for energy system training (The "Flow" Method") has been very eye-opening for me personally in my fitness pursuits, and I believe more coaches and athletes should be exposed to his unique training method. His resume is beyond impressive and includes working with some of the best athletes in fitness racing today, including OCR champions such as Veejay Jones, Hyrox champions like Hunter McIntyre, and high-level CF athletes such as Ryan Fischer. The debate of "Who is the Fittest" and "Who is the most Athletic" has been going on since the dawn of the CrossFit Games. Hooverball is an old school CrossFit game that actually predates CrossFit itself! In this episode of the Glassman Chipper, Bill and Chase talk about the greatest athletic test for the Fittest on Earth that many have forgotten about.
"There are movements that will never make it to your local gym and they include some of the best exercises ever known. There is a collection of them known as “the odd lifts.” It would be foolish to ignore these lifts. It would be even more foolish to approach them with other than extreme caution." - Greg Glassman JOURNAL ARTICLE PDF: http://library.crossfit.com/free/pdf/05_03_The_Odd_Lifts.pdf
Coach Glassman: Gymnasts have no peer in trunk and hip flexion, upper-body strength in multiple joint angles, agility, accuracy, balance, coordination. Their domain is body control. Weightlifters are masters of power, speed, and hip and leg strength. Powerful hip extension is the most critical element of human performance and none have the capacity of the weightlifters. Sprinters have enormous physical potential due to their metabolic competency across anaerobic and aerobic pathways and because of the speed, power, and total conditioning that sprinting demands. Blending workouts from each domain gives us a total greater than the sum of the parts – a gorgeous hybrid. CrossFit Journal Article: http://library.crossfit.com/free/pdf/05_03_Interview_Glassman.pdf
"As the athlete moves from shoulder press, to push press, to push jerk, the importance of core to extremity muscle recruitment is learned and reinforced. This concept alone would justify the practice and training of these lifts." - Greg Glassman CrossFit Journal Article: http://library.crossfit.com/free/pdf/PushpressJan03.pdf
The most powerful forces that can be generated by the human body are initiated, controlled, and dominated by the hip. Unfortunately, in the majority of trainees, some degree of hip dysfunction creates postures and mechanics that reduce power and stability and are generally unsound. The faulty mechanics arise from inadequate training and insufficient practice of critical hip movements. We've named this widespread fault “muted hip function” or “MHF.”
For this weeks CrossFit Journal Book Club we take a look at look at 3 workouts that were considered great all around tests of Fitness 20 years ago. We will look at why this was the claim back then and how that claim has changed at the sports and athletes have evolved over the last 2 decades.
Today we visit the Glassman Chipper artcile #08 called the "Squat Clinic". Bill and Chase dive into the long lost art of how important a basic squat can and how being proficient there can translate to improving nearly everything from Fitness to Health. "Why Squat? The squat is essential to your well-being. The squat can both greatly improve your athleticism and keep your hips, back, and knees sound and functioning in your senior years. Not only is the squat not detrimental to the knees it is remarkably rehabilitative of cranky, damaged, or delicate knees. In fact, if you do not squat, your knees are not healthy regardless of how free of pain or discomfort you are."
Another combo edition of the The Glassman Chipper for articles #06/#07 "The Glycemic Index" + "Fast Food". In this week's episode of the Glassman Chipper Book Club we look into the perils of the overconsumption of high glycemic and processed foods has been the catalyst of a wave of Chronic Disease that kills over 40 million people yearly. CrossFit Journal Articles: "The Glycemic Index" http://library.crossfit.com/free/pdf/GlycemicNov02.pdf "Fast Food" http://library.crossfit.com/free/pdf/FastFoodDec02.pdf
On today's CrossFit Journal "Book Club" we will be going over articles #04/05 of the Glassman Chipper. "How to row a sub 7:00 2K" and "The Muscle Up". These two are unique as we move from Theoretical material to Movement material. "Our purpose here is to show specifically how a simple goal, like rowing a seven-minute two thousand meters, can not only be systematically and deliberately approached from multiple protocols, but can generally encourage similar thinking in pursuing other fitness milestones." - Greg Glassman "SUB 7:00 2K ROW" http://library.crossfit.com/premium/pdf/Row2K_Nov02.pdf?e=1461269040&h=4fb3da3f4e70f774ec4d863af9b9a385 "THE MUSCLE UP" http://library.crossfit.com/free/pdf/Muscle-upNov02.pdf
Imagine a world where the only definition of fitness was "the ability to transmit genes and being healthy" That was where the fitness industry was at just 20 years ago. In comes Greg Glassman and CrossFit where not only did we define what Fitness was and how our definition changed the way we looked at Health but that definition would someday birth a revolutionary test that set out to find who the "Fittest on Earth" really were.
Chase and Bill sit down with our 2nd article from the Glassman Chipper called "The Garage Gym". 20 years ago there were not CrossFit gyms to call home, we have to make do with what the commercial gym would allow us to and it wasn't much.. so what could we do? The answer: BUILD OUR OWN.
Bill and Chase go through Journal Article #01 of the "Glassman Chipper" called "Foundations" and recenter/refocus where we all came from and why. PDF of this article can be found here: http://library.crossfit.com/free/pdf/Foundations.pdf
