Our Day-One, Mat Trewhit came through the basement studio a year later for his second episode with us and it's steaming with tea my friends. We talked about a lot of toxic shit in the world today like pop culture, social media, and toxic masculinity itself. Is toxic masculinity the problem? Or are the conversations about it and what masculinity 'should be' the real villian here? We love and appreciate Mat so much because of not only his lens and take on things, but his incredible ability to respectfully have a two-way discussion with varying opinions. This is not something we take lightly because the world, while amazing and beautiful, is also negative az fuck. We hope you're here for this episode y'all. It's Black History Month and we need to talk about it. We need to talk about how the ten highest earning TikTokers do not consist of a single Black creator. We need to call in governmental organizations at all levels to not only acknowledge BHM but to also be transparent about what they're doing to commit to recognizing their participation in the inequities Black people face, and also what they're actively doing to combat and change it. In the 1870s, John Sullivan Deas was a prominent Black business owner in Ladner, BC. We feel this canning pioneer doesn't get the clout he deserves. These ones are always tough.  This week we bring you another installment in our Girmit series where we continue to expose the harsh truths about this system.  Indentured Labour was slavery reimagined.  Its slight modifications convinced Pacific Island colonizers that they were acting humane enough.  The experience of being a labourer was far from humane.  Close living quarters, unsanitary conditions, and malnutrition and starvation were a regular part of being a Girmitiya.  Mental health was extremely poor which led to dark solutions for those desperate to escape.  By creating these episodes and sharing them with you, we are learning, healing, and ensuring that the legacies of our ancestors are not lost to the world.  They were people and they mattered.  They still matter. A lot of us are back in the regular swing of things, embracing “the new normal”, seeing loved ones, and attending events. We're back to responding "Great! How 'bout you?" when we're asked how we're doing but how many of us actually are "great'? In this second installment of what we've cleverly dubbed 'The Chronicles of Ash', he tells us about his personal experience during recovery and the short time after where his awareness caused the circle he knew so well to shrink. This has in turn effected his time spent which is mostly alone right now. How do we feel about asking our friends for what we need from them? Is it appropriate to “need” things from them in the first place? What happens when those we look to for support opt to wash their hands of a situation or responsibility? This week Ashneil takes the main stage to give us insight into his past and struggles with addiction. He describes how it all started with life growing up in Ladner, his experiences with racism, and bullying. We get into the nitty gritty of spiraling, recovery, then eventually relapsing, including numerous brushes with the law. This is Ash's personal story and one that he tells unapologetically. A mission in the creation of this podcast was to make connections and help others. Ash hopes to do just that with his honest storytelling. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction and would like some help, please do not hesitate to reach out via Instagram and we'll do everything in our power to point you in the right direction. Have you ever had to go the extra mile to explain something to someone only to have it go on one year, process minimally, then come out of their mouth chopped, screwed, and completely misunderstood? Yeah, us too. Not to mention the shame and reputation you receive and are labelled with when you attempt to call people in but they immediately feel called out. Being an Activist is not for the faint of heart. We've learned that it requires thicker skin than our younger days did when we simply just took and accepted racism. We get tired of explaining "why this" and "why that". It's even more labouring when we're not taken seriously and after our words are chopped and screwed, they're dismissed. You asked, we gon' tell! Why is it that Indians went to Fiji in the first place? If Fiji was a third world country and life was so hard then why emigrate there? It wasn't that long ago so surely it could not have been that bad, right? This week we get into it about the origins of our ancestors; where, how, and which Indians were recruited, the classist process, the differing opinions of whether indentureship was a blessing or a curse, and an introduction to the creation of a Fijian subculture. How many times have we gotten in trouble for something we didn't even know was wrong? Or how about when you do something with good intentions but apparently it's disrespectful? You weren't taught the "right" way to do things and were just expected to know it all. And after you get in trouble for not knowing, you're not given any clarification on how to fix what you fucked up. Sound familiar? Yeah. Well, "why don't you know?". And please, if you have that feeling in your gut that's saying "don't tell your parents," just don't because that's your psychic meter and it's correct! This dynamic and the responses we have received over the years from our parents have built a calloused trust where we don't feel like we can actually rely on them for anything. We can't go to them for anything that we need. But if it's something they need then yes, we can and should help them. Or feel this undesirable "need to" help them or else. Unfortunately white people are not the only ones we experience othering from. Growing up, we would hear a lot in reference to how dark our skin is; sometimes as a joke, a term of endearment - queue eye roll -, and even straight up disrespect from our own community. Within brown culture fair skin is what has been explicitly desired for centuries. Fairer skin has been the standard for so long that when a darker skinned individual is beautiful, it is considered astounding. We dig into the origins of colourism in post-colonial India and discuss how it manifests itself in our world today. By the end of the first world war, Britain had accomplished transporting over two million indentured workers to over 19 colonies. The indentured labour system or indentured service system was slavery reimagined and reinvented. When you take a vast population who have little to no options, give them the promise of being able to provide for their families and more, and then take them to an unknown land that is already inhabited and force them to work long grueling hours with little nourishment, what else would we call that? Indentured workers were manipulated and exploited by opportunistic and self-serving colonizers. Today, the 60,500 Girmityas who were taken to Fiji have descendants there, but also in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, England, and you guessed it, Canada to name a few. For those of you who are not familiar, Ladner is a town of just over 22,000 people in Delta, British Columbia. It was established as a fishing and farming village in 1868 by European settlers who initially pursued the Fraser River gold rush. Growing up here as dark skin Fijians who are descendants of Girmit and do not entertain any form of racism or microaggressions it was extremely tiring to constantly be on the defence. It is important in history and people need to learn to respect cultures and NOT use them as their side shows and jokes. We are not here for your appropriation pleasure or for your bullying release. For many of us here on Turtle Island, our identities are complex and have a rich story. These stories get silenced and erased when those who do not wish to understand push their own narrative. It also does not help that immigration can be a traumatic experience that puts people in survival mode. Our parents did their best to share with us their stories of back home but we did not grasp the full understanding of who we are until we grew and began asking questions.
