This week we took a visit to the Australian award winning Lebanese restaurant Al Aseel (metaphorically speaking that is). With 22 years under their belt it comes as no surprise that the restaurant has venues in 6 different locations. Making our way to the Alexandria venue, we were certainly not prepared for what lay in store. The menu is filled with an overwhelming amount of tasty Lebanese dishes and the square footage of the venue would fill any covid marshals social distancing dreams. With not even an article from Broadsheet on this place you know it's as traditional as they come. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Please note: This episode was recorded prior to Sydney's current lockdown. This week we embarked on Bea's first Korean BBQ. And all we can say is thank the lord for Libby. A little PSA for everyone out there who is also thinking about enjoying Korean BBQ, make sure you have at least one party who knows what they are actually doing. There will be fire, coal, scissors, spatulas, and self-adjusting Range-hoods.Coined as a global franchise introducing Korean flavours to the world, 678 Korean BBQ resides in Sydney's CBD. Not to be confused with the one in Haymarket, as two parties warned multiple times.Once you do make it, you'll find yourself walking into traditional inspired interiors that are hosting meat with a shy marbling score of eight plus. Listen now to hear the drama unfold… See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week we headed to Zetland to visit one of the many, much loved Kickin'Inn restaurants. The story of Kickin'Inn starts back in 2017 in Dubai when two friends Sami, a fast-food chain owner, and Ravi, a management consultant, came up with a plan to spread fresh, high-quality seafood at affordable prices throughout Australia. The pair have transformed the seafood dining experience by removing cutlery and plates, replacing them with mallets and scissors. Kickin'Inn is no ordinary seafood restaurant, the tables were topped with fresh white paper table cloths which then were covered in bags upon bags of juicy red seafood poured onto the table. This experience is not for the faint-hearted – tune in to hear what we thought.Disclaimer: This episode was recorded before Sydney went into a snap lockdown. Lights, camera, action! Because it literally felt like we were on the set of a movie walking into Franca Brassiere. The dim lighting, green leather booths and effortless charm simply had us transported. Located on the iconic MacLeay St Potts Point, Franca Brasserie is not your classic French Brasserie. The menu orchestrated by former Bathers Pavilion head chef Alexis Besseau favours the modern and Mediterranean showcasing regional France and neighbouring coastal towns. With a 2.5 million dollar fit out this venue brought to us by Andrew Becher of Double Bay's Pelicano leaves little to the imagination and you simply must get there. As autumn reaches cold peaks we thought what better way to warm ourselves than to indulge in some hearty Italian food. We know what you're thinking, wow they're at Italian again. But...our dear friends, this is not just any Italian joint. Perched up on Macleay St in Potts Point lives a restaurant that goes by the name of Ria Pizza + Wine. This beauty is part of the Bentley group and lives up to its siblings reputation. With an interior that's been flicked with fluoro paint and an industrial sculpture that hangs from the centre of the room the aesthetics are fully engaged. Coined as an Australia styled pizza venue you'll find your Queensland prawns, octopus from WA and saltbush (not to be mistaken for kale). See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Located on one of the busiest streets in Marrickville, Pepitos is already making its mark. Self-described as a rocking neighborhood taberna, first-time restaurant owner Jose Alkon and his team are serving up traditional South American cuisine as we have never seen. The drinks are not to be missed with an extensive wine list featuring local minimal intervention wine, however, the Peruvian Pisco is certainly front and centre. With a fresh white aesthetic with walls covered in posters and family pictures, it's no wonder walk-ins aren't advised. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
There’s fuh and then there’s fuh and Eat Fuh is where it’s at. Before the opening of its permanent venue in Marrickville in 2016 and a second in Darlinghurst in 2018, Eat Fuh was known only to its dedicated market stall followers so when word got out they were moving to bricks and mortar it was a feeding frenzy. But this isn’t any old fuh joint, unlike other Vietnamese restaurants that have passed down recipes owner Hoang Nguyen says he is from a new generation of Vietnamese, reinventing and interpreting. Working together with his mother Hanh Ngoc Tang or as some call her Mama Pho, the pair are combining the ideas of other people and making it their own. Opened in 2018 by the team who brought us Grandma’s Bar & the Wild Rover, James Bradey and Warren Burns have taken the status quo and thrown it out the fire door exit. Bistecca the backstreet basement restaurant has chins wagging as it has been coined one of Australia’s most unique dining experiences. The Italian classic cocktail bar and restaurant is purely dedicated to Tuscany’s admired cut of steak the Bistecca Alla Fiorentina. The wine list solely features Italian wine, the meat saws are sharp and the vibes are electric. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week we visited “A Bondi institution” as Raw Bar have so humbly coined themselves. Nestled on the corner of Warners Ave in Bondi Raw Bar is very well known amongst the locals and no stranger to the influencers. Serving up a delicious, fresh and sustainable Japanese menu head chef Shintaro Honda has been heroed for his work in the now iconic venue which since its birth in 1995 has paved the way for the Japanese food scene in Sydney. But is Sushi just Sushi...? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week we hustled our way to Oxford street where we introduced ourselves to a building that will most likely see our faces again...Cafe Freda’s. It has only been a few hot minutes since the Chippendale nightclub Freda’s shut their doors after a fun nine years. And now, much like the original venue, Cafe Fredas has an emphasis on expression, art, and music. Which if you know us here at the OG headquarters well, you know those are three things we absolutely love. With a bright yellow exterior, the building itself is rather hard to miss, not to mention you can actually smell the Chinese/Malaysian inspired cooking from across the road as you strut right in. This week’s hunt for the best food in Sydney took us to the main street of Redfern and whilst you might walk past the small neon sign, this venue is not to be missed. Kinhboy is another brainchild from the beautiful people who brought us Marble in Barangaroo and Tokki in Surry Hills. This time with a Vietnamese twist. Head chef Peter Wu, who hails from Sunset Sabi and Phomo, has given us his own spin with this “Vietary” trying to fuse together the way Australian’s like to eat with traditional flavors.Walking into the long sleek venue you pass another neon pink sign with the words “pho king amazing” and the playfulness begins. This is followed by a colourful, Asian inspired fruity cocktail list with some natural wine and local craft beer. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Farmer wants a wife or in this case a feed. Originating 40 years ago in Milton a humble little Pilgrims opened its door to the local community. Today the vegetarian café which originated as a simple veggie burger joint has venues in Huskisson, Cronulla, Corrimal, and as of July last year Bronte. With a slogan of “healthy, wholesome and hearty food that tastes simply delicious” there was no doubt Pilgrims would attract that coveted Easty following See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We’re back and we thought it was only fitting to bring in the new year the way we came into last year, and let’s be honest, probably every other year...by eating pasta. Hidden in a nook within Angel Place is a magical little restaurant that goes by the name of Ragazzi. If you close your eyes you could almost be transported to the backstreets of Rome. Inside the Italian style wine bar you’ll find a dim somewhat mysterious room lined with leather booths, surrounded by imperfect painted walls and dark chairs inviting you to take a seat and eat. Don’t worry OGers we weren’t going to leave you without a buffer between Christmas and New Year! Join us this week as we recount our favourite venues from 2020 and discuss our Foodlutions for the new year. As we head into what is already shaping up to be another wild year we wish everyone a cracking start to 2021. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
For our Christmas special, we decided to go somewhere a bit special. A slight detour past Nomad we landed at the beautiful Ezra, located in Potts Point just a stone's throw from Kings Cross Station. Opening in late August, the restaurant has already begun to cause a stir which is exactly what owners Nick and Kirk Mathews Bowden wanted to do with this Tel Aviv inspired venue. Whilst they both admit to not having any Israeli roots, they were so taken with the electric nightlife and the delicious food that they had to bring that to Sydney. With the help of head chef Ben Sears, whose resume doesn’t scream Mediterranean king, they have turned this corner restaurant into a bustling beautiful spot full of ashkenazi, mid eastern and Mediterranean food, matched with a 40 odd wine list and cocktails to write home about. Worth a try, we thought so. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Italian street food meets the streets of King Cross. Until this week none of us had heard about Friggitoria, an Italian Eatery that apparently serves some of the best pasta in Sydney and yet when asking our colleagues and friends they had! So we had to see what all the fuss was about. Nestled amongst a row of quick dine-in options on Bayswater Rd, Friggitoria is serving up fried snacks and a make your own pasta menu. The chef behind it all, Flavio Tosolini, hails from Fourth Village Providore in Mosman which has caused quite the stir, tune in to find out if Friggitoria had the same impact. This week we trialled and can now confirm a bit of a life hack for all our CBD workers out there. And by life hack we mean we’ve found you your new weekly lunch spot obsession. And it goes by the name of... drum roll pls... Joe's Sandwich Bar! You can find this heavenly hole-in-the-wall on Kent street where it will be dishing out all the essential work day cravings such as coffee, treats and of course, sandwiches. To make things more fun, it’s vegan! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week we visited a Surry Hills staple, Forrester's. Established in 1921 this neighbourhood calling card has been given a facelift by hospitality giants Applejack. Known for the likes of SoCal and The Butler, we expected to see some beautiful spaces and a well designed drinks menu, both which the middle bar Phylli’s delivered. Decorated in fresh greenery and terracotta toned murals, with a menu taking inspiration from the Americas, this is really a step up. In the rest of the venue they have tried to stay true to it origins, keeping the public bar and salon as is, with craft beer, Aussie wines and $10 Steak night. Forrester really does have something for everyone. Tune in to hear what we really thought. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Health food beach babes that’s who we were channeling this week at Blackwood Pantry in Cronulla. Co-owners Rob Lechowicz, Daniel Sorridimi and Paul Pisani, contacted the best of the best when opening this establishment in 2016 and coffee sits at the centre. In the coffee machine is some of Sydney’s top roasting beans and on the all day menu lives a mixture of colourful sweet and savoury dishes. Aesthetically we didn’t think the venue lived up to the hype it had generated and yet it appears to have somewhat a cult following with a line out the door on weekends and the likes of Sarah’s Day even having her own dish on the menu... has the shire shone? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Parked up on cathedral street in Woolloomolo is a new Latina diner that goes by the name of Juan Montago. For some this might ring a bell because by day this venue is a cafe known as John Montagu, see what they did there?Narada Kudinar mastermind behind this masked madness is also co-owner of Yan Restaurant in Wolli Creek. Juan Montago is serving up a modern menu of Colombian and South American delights and it is simply divine. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week's pick needs no introduction, but we will give you one anyway. Another of Justin Hemme’s masterpieces Totti’s opened in late 2018 on Bondi Road connected to the Royal and has become one of Sydney’s most loved venues ever since. Think casual Italian eatery with a hint of Bondi snobbiness. This menu, like most of the guests, is dressed to impressed starting with the famous wood fire bread followed by antipasto and finishing with a delicious array of pasta and wine. Has Justin done it again? Tune in to find out! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
A 100% vegan menu of Mexican, Peruvian and Japanese cuisines…what on earth? Calle Rey opened its doors on King St in Newtown in February this year however with the hit of COVID it has flown relatively under the radar. Serving up a unique range of flavours and fusions, Executive Chef JC Miranda is aiming to push the boundaries of plant based cuisine with throwing a whole lot of liquor on the side. Inside Calle Rey you will find Diablo Pisco Bar a Peruvian themed bar offering unique cocktails heroing the Peruvian Pisco and largaritas, ginormous margaritas topped with your choice of Vodka Cruiser or Sol beer. Needless to say there is a lot happening and I’m not sure how we feel about it. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We took ourselves to the heart of Surry Hills to indulge in a Izakaya inspired dining experience at Toko. With the building itself dating back to 1908 and an interior that can only be described as dark and lush, It’s hard to walk down crown street and miss the spiral matchstick-like wall art that lays within. Once you are within, you’ll be greeted with a perfectly designed menu that is predominately share style, along with Japanese inspired cocktails, sake, and an endless wine list. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
If thick, sticky, chewy noodles coated in sweat inducing (or in Bea’s case snot inducing) chilli is your thing then you need to head to Biang Biang. Opening in 2017 by Chinese based company Gu Cheng management, this Chinatown staple shot to fame for its name sake the Biang Biang noodle. Steeped in tradition these cheap and cheerful noodles will definitely not disappoint. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Where souffles meet pancakes. Founded by Takeshi Takata, Gram Cafe and Pancakes opened its first store dedicated to sky-high soufflé pancakes in Osaka back in 2014. Since then Gram Café has received what can only be described as a cult following and in February of this year opened their first Australian establishment in Chatswood. The chefs in the kitchen have been trained by the boss man himself and the pancakes are fluffy AF. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
After our Fred’s venture we decided we needed to reign things in a little bit and opt for a cheaper and cheerful experience. So we escaped to Newtown for a crowd favourite Cairo Takeaway. Owner Hesham El Masry has designed this Egyptian eatery in such a way that makes you feel like you’re walking through the back streets of Cairo. Picture cane tables, leather stools, crates out the front for excited diners and inside counters full of fresh ingredients and fridges full of soft drinks with an Arabic twist. Be prepared to wait for a seat but oh my is it worth it. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
For our very first episode of season two, we decided to treat ourselves and try somewhere we have been dying to go! Where else than Justin Hemmes “Fre d’s”. This farm to table restaurant fits perfectly into its location in upper Paddington. Walking into the iconic eucalyptus green building through the unassuming glass door you are greeted with a dimly lit cocktail bar and a warm sense of welcoming. The Fre d's dining room is set around the fully functioning kitchen, with a marble island bench and open fire grills for all the diners to watch in anticipation. Head chef, Danielle Alverez’s focus is on sustainable produce which is emulated throughout the open style kitchen with fresh locally sourced ingredients on the countertops for all to see. When you can’t go to Mexico bring Mejico to you. This week we dived into Mejico’s almost ready to eat meal box. Creating some of the finest modern market to table Mexican cuisine in Sydney, Mejico combines regional flavours with techniques in their eclectic dishes. It was founded in 2013 by Dr Sam Prince, you might remember that name from the episode where we reviewed INDU. Since then Mejico has continued to make noise amongst the culinary scene and now with the pivot to takeaway it just keeps getting better.
If you’re looking to one-up your last brunch spot then look no further, the Mayflower, located on Liverpool street in Darlinghurst will do just that. Christen Lee and Kevin Ly have created the most extra menu with a side of caviar. Keeley Baird has created a space that will have you feeling like you’re somewhere between a world of magic gardens and hello pony. Think, millennial pink, onyx stone tables, quirky resin, and flowers coming from places you didn’t know existed.
This week we ordered the DIY Bao Box and Yum Cha Kit from award-winning Sydney food-truck Tsuru. Now you may not recognise them by name, but you will by logo. Think red paper crane splashed on a black background which you have probably seen rolling out Asian street food across most music festivals or local markets. Due to the current climate, they have taken their offerings online to the “Eat Drink Collective” allowing us to experience soft pillowy bao and steaming yum cha in the comfort of our own homes.
This week we brought The Prince of York to our living room with the DIY date night pasta kit. The wine bar and restaurant is located at 18 York St, in Sydney’s CBD. You’ve probably walked past it before and thought wow what’s that’s pumping bank??? Well, it’s not a bank anymore, the most notable feature of the whole building is the volt downstairs that hides the most valuable possessions, aka the wines.
This week we found ourselves in the unassuming brainchild of Justin Best Uncle Mings. Uncle Mings is a swish cocktail bar and late-night dumpling house hidden amongst the hustle and bustle of Sydney’s York St. Down a flight of stairs and through a bamboo curtain you enter what can only be described as a sensory experience. Dark red lighting, incense, and paper lanterns transport you to another setting entirely. Once your eyes adjust and you have managed to find your table a menu of exotic cocktails and delicious dumplings awaits
“A restaurant without fuss, but with linen napkins” – Located in Sydney’s Luxury precinct Barangaroo, Marble is not your average fusion restaurant. This Japanese bar with Korean influence has already started to make waves standing out of the shadows from it's beer-drinking sister Tokki. When owners David Bae and David Ashby gave Chef Jacob Lee creative reign on the menu he took it and ran with it, sourcing a wide range of rare ingredients from across the globe. We think its certainly worth a try!
On this week's episode of Obviously Good we took a journey to the Lord Dudley Hotel. With a venue as timely and charming as this, you could almost mistake it for a backstreet pub in London. Actually located in Woollahra, this family-run business has a classic English twist with all your favourites. Prepare to feel wholesome!
On this week’s episode of Obviously Good charcoal chicken meets Lebanese goodness. Who else could take something so run of the mill yet iconic like charcoal chicken and make it an experience… Ibby Moubadder could. From the team that brought us Nour and Cuckoo Callay comes Henrietta the new Lebanese Charcoal Chicken Shop to hit Surry Hills. Think succulent chicken, neon signs, and bubble tea cocktails. This absolute vibe of a place is dishing up traditional Lebanese flavours with a twist and with a takeaway window adjoining the restaurant you can even get it on the go.
“A place to meet, to eat, and to celebrate” The Cottage Bar and Kitchen in Balmain really does live up to owners Chris Cornforth, Rob Teitzel, and Os Misirlizade motto. Whilst this little cocktail bar will warm your soul with its cosy, homely atmosphere, the menu is a little more wild than woolly. So in other words come for the cocktails and…. stay for the cocktails.
There’s ramen and then there’s ramen and Gogyo in Surry Hills is giving us just that. Master and founder Shigemi Kawahara broke tradition in 2003 by burning the crap out of the miso and from there he never looked back. The infamous Kogashi Miso can be found here along with more traditional ramens as well as an eclectic entrée and dessert menu. The dim lighting, wicker lamps, and open kitchen transport you to the backstreets of Tokyo and with one slurp of that juicy juicy ramen you’re in heaven.
Working from home and dreaming of Southern Italy? Well stop dreaming... we’ve found you the perfect slice of heaven (or pizza) and it’s residing in Sydney’s infamous Double Bay. Head on down to 29 Bay Street to indulge yourself in the pure magic of Chef Orazio D’Elia’s menu.
When in Rome.. or in this case when in Leichhardt. This week we ventured into the heart of Sydney’s Italian food scene to try some authentic and home style cooking. Capriccio Osteria gives you modern Italian food using traditional techniques inspired by the freshest local ingredients. Head chef Nicole Brampton’s Menu will have something for everybody, but word to the wise, if there is no cheese in the description of the pizza, the pizza may not have any cheese on it… even so ending the night with a complimentary night cap, this beautiful osteria really will give you a taste of Italy.
Who would be confident enough to open a new venue during COVID... Merivale! And boy are we happy they did. Situated amongst the Ivy Precinct in the heart of the city, Jimmy’s Falafel is delivering a mouth-watering Middle Eastern menu chock-a-block with (you guessed it) FALAFEL! In true Merivale style, the venue itself has been thoughtfully furnished with orange booths, frosted glass, and posters depicting 1960’s Beirut, inviting you in for a bite to eat or an old fashioned. With a long bar at the back, a disco ball and DJ decks it’s clear the venue was not just designed for a casual meal and takeaway, as restrictions continue to ease we envisage Jimmy’s Falafel will be the next hot spot for late-night dancing and drinks so watch this space.
Say hello to Don Pedros the new cantina-style Mexican joint taking Paddington by storm. Situated on Victoria St not far from Paddington Markets, the space once home to The Stables has been transformed with owner Juan Alvarez stripping everything back and filling it with cacti, artwork, bright colours, and Mexican imported candles. The food So Cal inspired has something for everyone and relies heavily on zestiness and spice. Among the killer cocktails and spicy tacos, we were surprised to learn the venue was child friendly, with children eating free on Wednesday’s which just adds to the versatility of the place. Simple, vibrant, and fun, a Mexican Fiesta awaits.
Where brunch meets hipster heaven. The Cornersmith, known for its pickling, preserves, and food craft workshops, has a very colourful history first opening in Marrickville before moving the cafe side of the business to Annandale. Passionate about sustainable and ethical food production the menu is refreshed regularly and showcases local produce, oh, and did we mention it’s all vego! Quaintly situated across from Hinsby Park you can either dine-in or picnic in the park with Cornersmith’s DIY picnic boxes. Spicy palettes beware! This week on Obviously Good we took a trip down memory lane and took advantage of The Malaya’s home delivery. For those not familiar with this heavenly joint, The Malaya was instrumental in bringing Malaysian cooking to Sydney back in 1963 when founder Wong Tai Si felt inspired by the flavours encountered on his Southeast Asian travels. Rich in history and rich in flavour, The Malaya will have your tastebuds tingling.
And just like that, we were back, in a restaurant obviously. As restrictions in NSW restaurants eased we wasted no time and happily waited in line at Pizza Fritta 180 for a night to remember. Opening in February of this year it was not great timing for the new venture from founder and head chef Luigi Esposito of Via Napoli but this didn’t stop him. As the name suggests Pizza Fritta 180 specialises in fried pizza, a dish popular to Naples and which Esposito has been cooking since he was 11. Vibrant, fun, and tasty, Pizza Fritta 180 is not your stock standard pizza place and you would be bonkers not to see for yourself.
You just can't get past a good burger and everyone claims to have the best burger in town, but do they? This week we ordered in and put Chargrill Charlies, Bar Luca, and Butter to the test. Do they taste as good as they look on their Instas and are they historically overpriced, tune in and join us as we discuss all this and more on this week’s episode of Obviously Good
The band is back together...well physically! As social restrictions are relaxed in NSW Obviously Good, after weeks apart, has returned to Bella’s living room to do what we do best. This week we ordered in and took advantage of the DIY packs being served up by INDU. Southern Indian meets Sri Lankan feast in the comfort of your own home and don’t worry it isn’t as hands-on as you think. Colourful, tasty and something different, join us as the critics become the cooks on this week’s episode of Obviously Good
