This week on CounterSpin: Climate disruption is outpacing many scientists' understanding of it, and it's undeniably driving many harms we are facing: extreme heat, extreme cold, devastating hurricanes and tornadoes. News media are giving up pretending that these extreme weather events are just weird and not provably driven by the continued use of fossil fuels. But fossil fuel companies are among the most powerful players in terms of telling lawmakers how to make the laws they want to see — public interest be damned. We'll hear about what you are very definitely not supposed to hear from reporter Emily Sanders from ExxonKnews. Not everyone is lying down and accepting that we're going to die from a climate crisis that is avoidable, but since companies don't want to talk about it, let's not. A county in Oregon is saying, deaths from high heat are in fact directly connected to conscious corporate decision-making. We'll hear about that potentially emblematic story from Victoria St. Martin, longtime journalist and journalism educator, now reporting on health and environmental justice at Inside Climate News. The post Emily Sanders on Criminalizing Pipeline Protest / Victoria St. Martin on Suing Fossil Fuel Companies appeared first on KPFA.
The crickets you're hearing about efforts to eviscerate the right to protest the impacts of climate disruption? That's all intentional.

The sun might be out but the job isn't done in the Coromandel, according to Coromandel-Thames Civil Defence controller Gary Towler. The region has experienced massive slips and land instability, compromising its entire roading network. ”Every time our land guys clear a slip, another one comes down right behind them,” Towler told Kerre Woodham Mornings on Newstalk ZB today. A number of houses in the Coromandel have already been red-stickered, Towler confirmed, as staff worked their way through affected areas to check the condition of housing. The other focus is power, which most of the area is still without. Powerco said it had 7462 customers without power in the Coromandel as of 8am today. ”We have the luxury of the New Zealand Defence Force, which we're deploying on to the east coast today to do a lot of review work and drone work to get a good picture of what carnage was created,” Towler said. Meanwhile, critical assets such as generators and wastewater plants in the Coromandel are running out of diesel, which helicopters are bringing in for stock-ups as they can't be accessed by road. If people are wanting to visit their homes and baches, Towler has told residents to “take a breath” and check the NZTA website and affiliated social media pages for information on road conditions. ”People need to have a go-bag and Plan B in case a slip blocks their path. That will be the case for the next five or six days,” he said. ”But people should check their properties as quickly as possible so we know if we're dealing with any other stretches. Central Auckland business owners say officials have been complacent in the "decimation" of their livelihoods during City Rail Link construction. After more than four years of road closures and construction noise, two dozen people protested on the steps of the Auckland Council offices this morning demanding compensation. They used placards and a loudhailer to voice their frustrations ahead of the closure of the Albert and Victoria St intersection next week.Owner of the Shakespeare Hotel and Brewery on Albert St, Sunny Kaushal, blamed disruption from the project for an estimated $2 million in missed revenue since 2016.He said he couldn't keep borrowing money week after week."The debts are mounting and it has been very very hard. It's taking a toll on our health. It's taking a toll on every worker's job. We have to pay the rent, we have to pay the expenses, we have to pay the rates," he said. The business owners submitted a proposal in January asking for a share of their rent to be paid, at a cost of about $10m each year. However chief executive of Heart of the City, Viv Beck, said they hadn't heard back about it."We haven't had the opportunity to work through that with officials. That's not good enough. So this is about the people coming to the decision makers, raising their voices," she said. The owner of Attic Backpackers Michael Leroy-Dyson said he was using his retirement savings to pay staff, after the double whammy of the pandemic and construction disruption. He said he would have closed his business if he could."I think most of us are locked into leases that we can't get out of because of personal guarantees. Many of these people would have just closed up and gone but they've got no choice but to file all their life savings or borrow money just to try and stay alive," he said."It's a $5 billion project. I would have thought putting a few million or even a few tens of millions into helping businesses that are being affected by this would be a sensible and reasonable way to run a project."A spokesperson for the office of mayor Phil Goff noted there had already been $617,000 in direct financial support to businesses impacted by the construction delays, through a hardship programme in 2019.It was distributed to 25 businesses, all on lower Albert St.The spokesperson said the Government had now asked the Ministry of Transport to investigate if that could be adapted, to provide support to other businesses facing hardship from construction."The mayor is supportive of the Government's direction," they said.Meanwhile, the spokesperson said landlords in the area could also help struggling small businesses."There will be a substantial value uplift for properties close to the City Rail Link connections, which means property owners will receive a significant benefit because of the expenditure of ratepayer and taxpayer money. The mayor believes it is reasonable for property owners to look at how they can support their tenants during the construction period."Transport Minister Michael Wood wasn't present at the protest as business owners hoped, but told RNZ in a statement that the Government was "carefully working through" compensation requests. He said the previous government did not create a process or budget for business compensation when the project was first set up.The business owners plan further demonstrations if their demands are not met.By Katie Todd of RNZ
What drew me to this book, aside from the neon-colored book jacket was my personal quest for “aha-moments” that would evoke clarity about my own calling. I came to this book with that desire, and no knowledge of the author, who is a celebrity medium of sorts. The book is about how to tune into your own ‘Essence,’ recognize subtle energies, signs, symbols, messages from the Divine that might otherwise be missed. After spending some time exploring what Essence is, and how to listen to it to improve daily life, the book moves towards its more serious theme of inspiring you to think about what good you are doing in your life today. It suggests that you take action towards the good that you can do by embracing change, sharing love, and being in a state of gratitude. This is a quiet book, more like a tapestry than a treasure map. The topics are illustrated with many stories from Char’s client readings, interwoven with tales and folklore, and embroidered with quotes from a variety of classic poets, writers, authors, and gurus, past and present. All of these are well-chosen and effective in supporting each premise...

We typically invite scholars, makers, and professionals out to brunch for an informal conversation about their work, and then we turn those brunches into a podcast. But for these bonus mini-episodes, we change things up a bit, asking Notre Dame researchers to talk about something that both makes them happy and has no direct connection to their academic pursuits. In other words, if you thought a podcast recorded over brunch couldn’t get even more casual, you’d be wrong. Here, Richard Jones, Walter H. Annenberg-Edmund P. Joyce Director of Notre Dame’s Gallivan Program in Journalism, Ethics, and Democracy, and Victoria St. Martin, distinguished visiting journalist with the Gallivan Program and the print publications coordinator with Notre Dame Student Media, join host Ted Fox via Zoom to discuss a musician whose art dared us to love each other for exactly who we are:Prince.LINK:Richard and Victoria’s previous appearance on the podcast: “On Real News and Purple Rain” (ep. 1.4)
Say hello to Don Pedros the new cantina-style Mexican joint taking Paddington by storm. Situated on Victoria St not far from Paddington Markets, the space once home to The Stables has been transformed with owner Juan Alvarez stripping everything back and filling it with cacti, artwork, bright colours, and Mexican imported candles. The food So Cal inspired has something for everyone and relies heavily on zestiness and spice. Among the killer cocktails and spicy tacos, we were surprised to learn the venue was child friendly, with children eating free on Wednesday’s which just adds to the versatility of the place. Simple, vibrant, and fun, a Mexican Fiesta awaits.
The idea behind this show is pretty simple: We invite scholars, makers, and professionals out to brunch for an informal conversation about their work, and then we turn those brunches into a podcast. It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it.For this, our season 3 finale, we’re turning the virtual interview chair around on Notre Dame alum Robert Costa, national political reporter for The Washington Post and the moderator and managing editor of Washington Week on PBS.While Robert’s work is the news, he and host Ted Fox talked more about the craft of journalism generally—and political journalism specifically—than everything going on in our country and our world in 2020. We figure you have much better outlets for content like that, such as Robert’s own reporting and that of the journalists from diverse organizations and backgrounds he talks to on Washington Week. That said, the health disparities magnified by the coronavirus and the recent examples of police brutality are just the latest reminders of how much we need the work and perspectives of African-American journalists in particular. So while it’s not directly related to this episode, we wanted to use this spot to recommend you follow Richard Jones and Victoria St. Martin, formerly of The New York Times and The Washington Post, respectively, and currently shaping the next generation of journalists through their work with students at Notre Dame. We’ve put links to both of their Twitters in the notes below. And speaking of episode notes, there’s also a video of the late Tim Russert there that you’re going to hear Robert talk about. It’s one of many great stories he shared on pursuing a career as a reporter in the nation’s capital during a time of rapid change in the news industry, a journey that for him has included succeeding the legendary Gwen Ifill at PBS. He also used the provost office at Notre Dame to illustrate how anonymous sourcing works. You know, in case we ever really need to get anything off our chests.Take good care, and we’ll be talking to you again soon. Because sources close to the podcast tell us there might be some bonus episodes on the way this summer.LINKSRichard Jones’ Twitter: @richard_g_jonesVictoria St. Martin’s Twitter: @VStMartinRobert Costa’s Twitter: @costareportsVideo Excerpts of Tim Russert’s Red Smith Lecture: “When Politicians Meet the Press”Full Transcript of Russert Lecture

On today's show Kamloops Mayor Ken Christian joins me to talk child care spaces in Kamloops, on street parking in the city's downtown and an idea to allow businesses to set up a portion of their stores on Victoria St as a bit of a walkable marketplace. An invasive hornet is waking up for spring, and the bee-eating predators could possibly be buzzing around B.C. soon. I am joined by Nanaimo based Entomologist and Senior Environmental Protection Officer with the Ministry of Environment Conrad Berube. And it is time for a new edition of That's Whack Wednesday.

Are men immature? And if we are, why are men immature? Is it because we want to avoid embarrassment, we fear ridicule, or is it because we just like to have a lot more fun! (Sorry ladies). Kev, Craig, Lee & Steve all share their experiences of being somewhat immature, all for different reasons. Are you immature?Who are we?The Black Country Blokes consists of 4 regular guys, speaking about all issues related to being a man in today's society. It is not just designed to focus on the mental health and well-being of men though, as it will also give our mothers, sisters, daughters and female peers an opportunity to understand us better too. We are dedicated to keeping this 100% authentic and raw. We are not polished, perfect individuals and our views remain our own, but what we do want to do is, is remove the stigma and speak about the taboo subjects openly and honestly.Furthermore, want to empower people to be happy and fulfilled and to overcome their own thoughts that could limit their potential in life. The group consists of the following guys:Kev Dillon a head coach at the Lions Amateur Boxing club. Someone who has been boxing since the age of 3, but sadly lost his eyesight at a very young age leaving him with only 7% vision in his right eye. This is known as 3/60 vision. He has been a poster child for adversity, dealing with anxiety and depression for a lot of his life. However, he has never folded or let his circumstances stop him pursuing his goals. He is now a proud father, husband and respected coach helping 100s of boys, girls, men and women of all ages. Furthermore, Kev's vision of the BCB podcast was to have a show exposing all the struggles and the victories that men go through, to let those listening know that they are not alone. Gym giant Les Mills has asked those who have put their memberships on hold during lockdown to start making payments again.Headlined "Back us to restart", an email to customers says the company is "facing the biggest hurdle of its 52-year history" and while it was hoped the clubs, which boasted some 60,000 members in March last year, would only be closed for a month, "that's regretfully not to be".Under alert levels 3 and 4, Les Mills and other gyms throughout New Zealand have been required to cease operations. Only when the country is deemed safe to move to level 2 will fitness centres be able to return to business as usual.Les Mills applied and was granted two wage subsidy payments under the government's Covid-19 scheme: Just over $2.34 million for 376 staff under Les Mills New Zealand Limited and $233,347 to pay 34 staff under Les Mills International Limited. For Les Mills members willing to return to making payments, the company has offered a sweetener of sorts: three months free membership for a friend or family member.During the lockdown, Les Mills has provided free workout sessions via TVNZ morning classes and offered free trials of its Les Mills On Demand app which features workouts and classes in strength, cardio, HIIT, dance and flexibility.Founded in 1968, last year Les Mills Auckland City, on Victoria St, underwent a massive makeover. When the Herald toured the revamped digs in March last year, $18 million out of a $30m budget had been spent.Les Mills' Philip Mills responds to the email in Bosses in Lockdown above

Sadly domestic violence stats have only risen during these times of lockdown due to covid/corona virus. Sadly this means, many people are seriously affected and being abused whilst stuck at home. This was a conversation we hoped that inspired people to just reach out and seek any assistance they required, to save their lives. We apologise for the poor internet connection and had to chop and change some parts of the edit, but our message is, check up on each other. Check up on your own well-being and please reach out if you ever need.Who are we?The Black Country Blokes consists of 4 regular guys, speaking about all issues related to being a man in today's society. It is not just designed to focus on the mental health and well-being of men though, as it will also give our mothers, sisters, daughters and female peers an opportunity to understand us better too. How do you educate students and young journalists to actively listen to people, try to understand them, accompany them, and be with them in difficult situations? Richard Jones and Victoria St. Martin are teaching Notre Dame students that being a professional journalist and someone who is compassionate do not need to be mutually exclusive. Richard Jones is the Walter H. Annenberg-Edmund P. Joyce Director of the John W. Gallivan Program in Journalism, Ethics, and Democracy and Victoria St. Martin is a distinguished visiting journalist with the Gallivan Program and the print publications coordinator with Notre Dame Student Media. Together they teach the course Covering America, a conceptual and skills-based immersion into the world of national reporting, one of the most complex and challenging forms of journalism. Students learn the principles of reporting, writing, and the journalistic applications of digital media. The capstone assignment in the course is a six-day reporting trip during spring break to the site of an ongoing national story.
