In 2025, we're going on a Celtic Invasion of Galicia in Spain. Galicia is indeed one of the more obscure Celtic nations to those of us who are most familiar with Ireland and Scotland. Find out more at CelticInvasion.com. 9:43 - IRISH DRINKING SONGS FOR CAT LOVERS In 2003, I was back from Dragon Con chatting with a friend on the phone. The Irish song “Wild Rover” was stuck in my head as we started talking about cats. The chorus came around and I started meowing. An idea started growing in my head. What if I parodied a bunch of traditional Irish drinking songs with lyrics all about cats. I wrote my first three songs before the end of October. I then found Ari Koinuma in Austin to help me produce the single. I set up a website at CatDrinkingSongs.com. In December, someone posted the idea to Fark. I had 20,000 website hits in one day and hundreds of comments. I knew this was a great idea. In May of 2005, I launched a podcast to help raise money for a CD of Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers. Thus was born the Cat Lovers Podcast. 10:54 - CAT MUSIC LOVERS #1: “WILD KITTY” AND CATS IN PHYSICS (REBOOT) In honor of the 20 year anniversary of my first cat CD, Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers, I am re-releasing the Cat Lovers Podcast on this feed. I'll also share new stories about the inspiration behind the album creation, including the liner notes from the album. This St. Paddys I had to be in the hospital in which ill spend the next three weeks due to a chronik pain issue. I was able to sneak in a (light) pint tho and have my banjo with me. I sang some tunes at the nearby lake with noone but some frogs around and enjoyed the moment. I hope you had a good one too! Greetz from Munich, Rusty!” Gerald Guinn of The Secret Commonwealth emailed a St Pats photo: “Hi Marc! Glad you had good St. Pat's/Birthday! The Secret Commonwealth did as well. We had shows on all three days of the weekend, culminating with our 31st anniversary St. Pat's show at Cedar Glade Brews, in the "city of our birth", Murfreesboro, TN (see attached pic) Now it's on to finishing up album #5! We hope to have it out in early summer. Best!” Brenda Richardson sent a photo for St Patrick's Day: “I walked with a group from the YMCA in the 5K St Patrick's Day Race in Colorado Springs. We heard some Celtic music along our route!” Michael Maloney emailed a St Patrick's Day photo: “Morning Marc! Happy belated St. Patrick's Day and Birthday! I feel like I'm still recovering. I play solo at Hugh O'Neill's in Malden, and several shows with my bandmates, The Boston Harbor Bhoys (Waltham Sr. Center, Medford's Ford Tavern, Framingham Elks fundraiser, Quincy's Assembly, and Boston's Green Dragon). So many songs, so many memories. I loved playing Hugh O'Neill's, where a table of young people requested The Saw Doctor's "N17" and ran out from their tables on the refrain each time to shout out "and the grass is green!". To the Sr Center in Waltham where the ENTIRE room of 100 people got all the hand - claps right on "Wild Rover" by the 2nd refrain, and the beautiful emotions expressed from our rendition of Danny Boy. To guests at the Framingham elks getting up to do all the dance moves to "The unicorn song", to seeing old fans from the South Shore of Boston that we haven't seen in 4 years requesting "Raglan Road", to jumping around The Green Dragon with my harmonica and tambourine leading hand claps on 'Finnegan's Wake" getting the whole bar clapping together. Agh, it was all so wonderful, went through a range of song styles and eras in the Celtic music catalogue, and it was wonderful connecting with audiences from the 20's up to their 90's, who all appreciated the music and experience in their own ways. It was one for the books! “
St. Patrick's Day has always been special to us, so it was particularly sweet six years ago tonight when the opening show for the 2018 season of “Route 60 Saturday Night” — the monthly musical variety bash for which The Flood was the house band — fell on March 17.To put a Celtic curl on the night, we dusted off some favorite songs from The Old Sod. As you'll see in the above video, we opened the show at the good ol' Route 60 Music Co. with one of the greatest sing-along in the Irish catalog — “The Wild Rover” — which we learned years ago from our heroes, The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. Then 90 minutes later, we wrapped up the evening with one of the prettiest Irish tunes of all times. “Down By the Salley Gardens,” with lyrics by William Butler Yeats, has been in The Flood repertoire for 25 or 30 years; in fact, it was on our first album in 2001. But as you hear in the second half of the video, the tune had a beautiful rebirth with the harmonies that Michelle Hoge brought to it.The Indefatigable Mr. DobbsThat fun night brought back memories of another special St. Pat's. Seven years earlier, The Flood was chosen to launch the city's first “Party on the Patio” of 2011 at Heritage Station's gazebo downtown. In those day, fiddler Joe Dobbs was front and center any time the band was stoking its Irish fires. In the following video from the March 17, 2011, show, Joe tears it up with his "Miss McLeod's Reel" for the dancers on the patio below the bandstand:Ah, those McLeods and their reel! That tune also was a Flood favorite any time the extraordinary flutist Wendell Dobbs dropped in to jam with us. Here, from a winter 2009 session, Wendell and Joe made the then-new weekly Flood podcast with their duet:EncoreAnyway, the gazebo event went well. The city invited the band back the next year for a St. Pat encore, kicking off the 2012 "Party on the Patio” (or “Paddy on the Partio,” as Charlie dubbed it in a later email to his cousin Kathy).“The gig was super!” he wrote. “We had a good gathering, the weather cooperated, the band sounded great and everyone seemed to have fun.”The Mike Smith Connection Meanwhile, at the Flood jam sessions in those days, Joe also often shared Irish tunes with Flood buddy Mike Smith, a regular at those weekly parties. In this moment from a summer evening in 2011, Pamela Bowen's video captures Joe and Mike's lovely twin fiddling:About that tune, poet Patrick Kavanagh wrote the "On Raglan Road" in 1946 and it quickly became a beloved verse in his native Ireland. It didn't become internationally known, though, until years later when Kavanagh met The Dubliners' Luke Kelly, who set the poem to a traditional melody, "The Dawning of the Day." Joe's Favorite Irish Fiddle TuneHands down, Joe Dobbs' favorite Irish fiddle tune was one he often played with Mike, as we reported in this June 2009 podcast:“Whiskey Before Breakfast” already had been with us a long time. It was a half century ago, in fact, that Joe taught that tune to his Flood family. And we actually have the tape! Picture it. It was near St. Patrick's Day 1977, and Joe and Flood co-founder Roger Samples had been wood-shedding together throughout the long, cold winter of 1976-77.In spring, the two emerged from those winter nights with a whole slew of new duets; at the March 1977 Bowen Bash, they put them on display for us. Take a listen:In the decades to come, Joe would always have that happy tune ready whenever someone wanted to dance with us, as you can see here:“Star of the County Down”Oh, and at a different Bowen Bash, Joe taught us another Celtic classic. This time it was his unique rendering of a beautiful Irish aire. Here's that moment from an Autumn 1981 gathering:Happy St. Patrick's Day!So, enjoy St. Patrick's Day 2024. Erin Go Bragh, y'all! And, hey, if your ears are still hungry for more Irish tunes, check out the virtual St. Patrick's Day show on the band's Radio Floodango free music streaming feature. Christopher Patrick of the band FitzBlarney emailed some Christmas photos from Salem, Massachusetts and wrote: "Hello, Mark! Wanted to share! For Christmas this year I FINALLY got my Bluetooth receiver for my car! This means I can now start my day listening to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast on my daily commute! My commute to work being only 20 to 30 minutes, I get to travel home listening to it too! I have just finished listening to your Celtic - Christmas episode, and was very impressed with the tunes - especially the creative arrangements. These gave me so many ideas for future arrangements with my Celtic Music band, FitzBlarney. We actually began as an ‘Acoustic - Celtic Christmas' trio, (comprised of myself and my two sisters.) Since then, we have taken on my brother and brother - in - law, and also play non - Christmas, Irish/Celtic music. In fact, this past December, we were asked to play at the Historic Salem ‘House Tour.” In essence, people with historic houses open them up to the public to walk through and see their Christmas displays. Musicians, ( like ourselves, ) set - up and create some Christmassy background music. This year, we were playing in the chapel of St. Peter's Church, (founded in 1733!) We also did our “Acoustic Brunch,” at O'Neill's Pub, also in Salem, MA. (I have attached a couple' pictures for you!) Thank you again for all you do! My commutes sound great now!" Tim Hughes sent a photo: "while walking our tri - pawed dog, Kinder, on the bike path on a wintry morning in Madison, WI."

We played three shows in three days, traveling through wind, rain and cold to several different towns. Happy belated birthday to you, as well!! Attached are a few pics from our celebrations. The posed shot is at Anakeesta Mountaintop Adventure Park in Gatlinburg, where we played on St. Patrick's Day. Taking our Irish Celtic music high up in the Great Smoky Mountains to entertain for the holiday was most fitting and special. And while the howling wind and blowing rain were less than pleasant, they gave us the sense of actually being in Ireland! Thanks again for writing, and for all you do for Celtic musicians! We love your show." Sean Malloy of Band o'Brothers emailed a photo: "Hey Marc! Happy Belated Birthday & St. Patrick's Day! Hope you had a wonderful time and a wonderful gig with your daughters. Attached is a picture of Band O'Brothers as we prepared to roll through the streets of New Haven in the St. Patrick's Day parade. We had a blast playing out songs for the joyful people along the parade route, and after we completed the parade route we even stopped our float outside a neighborhood bar to play a few songs for the revelers. We had a great day!"

The 9th of May this year will mark 130 years to the day since Celtic lifted their first ever Scottish League Title back in 1893. And now, in his brilliant new book Matthew Marr has opened the door on a season in our long and illustrious history that few of us know too much about. Matthew joined us in the studio along with fellow Celtic Author Matt Corr to discuss his latest addition to the catalogue of great Celtic writing, officially titled “The Bould Bhoys – Glory To Their Name. The Story of Celtic's First League Title” If you aren't yet familiar with the tale of how Willie Maley, James Kelly, Dan Doyle and their team-mates led the club to title glory then you're in for a fascinating insight into one of Celtic's earliest successes. It's certainly one of the most unusual! It's a story of on field success, off-field hi-jinks, and even kidnappings, starring characters such as The Duke, The Wild Rover & “Sparrow” Flannagan. Enjoy this episode with Matthew & Matt as they take us on an enjoyable trip down Celtic memory lane! St Patrick's Day isn't just about drinking. But I will tell you the story of how I learned to write drinking songs so you can write your own… just sing along a little more easily. I share 17 amazing Celtic Bands you should check out for St Patrick's Day. Learn a green idea for investing in our climate. This is Sci Fi Pub Songs & Stories #267. 0:22 - Kilted Kings “Ride On” from Flower of Scotland 4:42 - WELCOME TO SCI FI PUB SONGS & STORIES Happy St Patrick's Day! I am Marc Gunn. I'm a rhythm and folk Celtic musician living in Atlanta, Georgia. This is the audio edition of my weekly newsletter. I play traditional Irish and Scottish drinking songs. I also write songs inspired by pop culture, things like Lord of the Rings, Firefly, and Doctor Who. That's why this is Sci Fi Pub Songs & Stories. But this week, I'm mostly focusing on St Patrick's Day fun. 5:17 - UPCOMING SHOWS MAR 17: Little Shop of Stories, Decatur, Ga @ 7:00-7:30 PM, St Patrick's Day Show with my Family MAR 18: Pontoon Brewing, Sandy Springs, GA @ 12-3 PM MAR 18: Ironshield Brewing, Lawrenceville, GA @ 7-10 PM APR 29: The Lost Druid, Avondale Estates, Ga JUN 3-10: Celtic Invasion Vacations, County Mayo, Ireland 8:15 - WHAT'S NEW STORY Studio Days NPR Tiny Desk Concert performance of “Blink” 15:53 - Marc Gunn & Jamie Haeuser “Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye” from How America Saved Irish Music 19:47 - FEEDBACK Mitchell Petersen responded to my last newsletter about “Saying No Even If It's Included”. But then I wash them when I get home.” He responded: “FYI, we have these bags for fruits and veggies at the grocery store and they are awesome and you don't need to use the plastic bags OR have to put your stuff straight in the basket” 21:08 - One of the best things about Dragon Con… 21:55 - DOWNLOAD MY FREE EP You can download all of my songs in this show. While you're emailing me to get your free EP, let me know what you're doing while listening to this episode. 24:08 - Jiggy “King of the Faeries” from Translate New video: “Fiery Arrow” 27:21 - STORY OF THE CAT CAME BACK… THE CAT'S PERSPECTIVE I learned how to write a drinking song thanks to “The Cat Came Back… The Cat's POV”. First, let me point out, a drinking song isn't about alcohol. It's a song with a fun, easy-to-sing chorus. Sometimes it's interactive. “Wild Rover” has claps in the chorus. “Rattlin' Bog” and “The Unicorn Song” have a whole bunch of motions that act out the lyrics. “Seven Drunken Nights” and “Big Strong Man” have phrases that the audience shouts back at the singer. These were the songs I was thinking of when I wrote the cat's perspective of a famous folk song. I never liked “The Cat Came Back.” It was cruel and I love cats. So I decided to rewrite the song using the melody of “The Moonshiner”. But I wanted to make it a call-and-response song. So I added “Ka-Boom”, “Gurgle” and more to the end of the verses. But when I finally decided to play it live, I had NO idea how to get the audience to interact with the song. Eventually, I taught the audience the 5 different responses (five, really? What was I thinking?). I introduce each exclamation before the verse. But it's still difficult to get them involved. If you want to write a drinking song, keep it simple. One call and response throughout is best. Teach it at the beginning of the song. “Slainte Mhaith” is a great drinking song. It has an easy-to-sing chorus. But it also has a super easy call-and-response. “When I sing slainte mhaith, you shout it back to me. Slainte mhaith! [Slainte mhaith]”. Sometimes you learn to do something the easy way. With this song, I learned what not to do. Ah well. Live and learn. Here's the lyrics to “The Cat Came Back… The Cat's Perspective”: I was a crazy cat for many a year, My years are advancing. Now I sleep in my chair. But old Mr. Johnson still wants me to play If I don't get active, he'll send me away. I'm a yellow tabby, kinda flabby. And I'm coming home. And if you don't like me, then leave me alone! I'll eat when I'm hungry. I'll sleep when I'm tired. And if you try to wake me, you'll wish you had died. His neighbor ambushed me with shotgun and dynamite. My cat senses warned me. So I put up a fight. I clawed at his cigarette. It fell to the floor. It lit the dynamite as I ran out the door. KA-BOOM! He gave me to a boy with a dollar and a note To drown me in the river when we were afloat. I saw the rope come towards me and let out a yowl. The boat tipped on over. The poor boy was drowned. GURGLE! He gave me to a man going up in a balloon. I clung to his head. I am no buffoon. The man tried to free me, but then lost control. I stole his parachute as he crashed ‘gainst a knoll. KER-SPLAT! He took me to the mill where the meat was ground. He left off the lights, so I wouldn't look around. But I saw that food processor come closer to me, I jumped to the floor. He tripped bloodily. CRUNCH! Mr. Johnson, Mr. Johnson, I know you hate me, But I have nine lives and you haven't even three. Blessed are the cat lovers. Blessed are all kitties So love me or leave me alone for to sleep. One of the more creative is through banking. The fossil fuel industry is funded by investors. What happens if investors refuse to invest in them because they don't want to support the fossil fuel industry? We will see greener energy. There's a campaign in the U.K. asking people to green their investments. Thinking about that I just migrated to a new Mutual Fund so that my money no longer supports Fossil Fuels. Yeah. My small mutual fund will not make a huge difference. But imagine if just you and I made this change and we had the exact same amount in our pension? Their signature vocal style combined with instrumentation including harp, hammered dulcimer, bodhrán, guitars, button accordion, whistles and mandolin appeals to audiences of all ages. Jim Ofsthun bio: Jim is an original member of Willowgreen, and a talented vocalist and instrumentalist with international performances on Irish bodhrán, guitar, button accordion, and whistles. He is also a member of McInnis' Kitchen, and of Eira. He has family connections to the music through Ireland and Newfoundland, and is considered one of the top producers in Irish music in the Midwest. 4:37 - Willowgreen “Crocker's Cove Reel” from Willowgreen 7:34 - POITIN Poitín are an award-winning traditional Celtic band from Pilsen in the Czech Republic. They explore all forms of Celtic music but are firmly grounded in the pub session tradition and like nothing better than sitting round a table in the corner of a cosy pub playing old favourites about tarry sailors, merry maids and drunken nights. Poitín have performed at festivals across Europe in Italy, France, Poland, Denmark, Germany and the Czech Republic. As the album says, it's 'one for the road', to go with you and keep you company in your car or on your bike, and this Celtic world music will take you from Ireland to Argentina, from England to Egypt, from Brittany to the Czech Republic and beyond. 15:44 - Poitin “Claudy Banks” from One For the Road 17:58 - AMELIA HOGAN - TAKING FLIGHT Amelia Hogan is an impeccably authentic singer of Celtic music and her heart comes through in honeyed tones on Irish, Scottish, British, and American styled vocals. She sings in the Irish music tradition of Sean-Nós, or “old style” as well as accompanied. Amelia also plays bodhran and a small 22 string Welsh lap harp, and tours internationally to global acclaim. Amelia Hogan sings both traditional and contemporary folk music with lilting graces and subtlety. She'll weave a mysterious old magic that takes the listener out of time and place. She transports audiences with haunting melodies, holding them close, and stirs ancient spirits with an evocative storytelling presence. 24:07 - Amelia Hogan “Taking Flight” from Taking Flight 26:19 - FEEDBACK 28:24 - KINNFOLK Josh and Julie Kinn weave bouzouki, bodhran, and smooth vocal harmonies in their Celtic folk music from the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Kinnfolk have played at festivals and listening rooms throughout Virginia and beyond. In 2021, Kinnfolk was one of 10 bands--representing 10 countries from across the globe--selected to be part of the inaugural Robinson Emerging Artist Showcase hosted by the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival. Their sound is a unique blend of traditional Celtic and Americana in a driving format - more rock than the Clancy Brothers, more folk than the Dropkick Murphys - while sharing some of the traditional repertoires of both. They are proud of their deep songwriting bench - the original songs of Boston Blackthorne have won several national and international songwriting competitions including first place in the International Narrative Songwriting competition and honorable mention in the International Songwriting Competition. The band's sound is centered around powerful vocal harmonies and lead vocals shared by several of the members. Between the 5 core members instrumentation includes fiddle, 4&5 string banjo, harmonica, 6&12 string guitars, mandolin, bouzouki, bass and drums 50:26 - Boston Blackthorne “Fishing over the Lusi” from Single 54:40 - ALTAN - FAVORITE SONG OF MAIRÉAD NÍ MHAONAIGH You can hear more stories by the Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh on show #580. Obviously, I am the host of this podcast. But I'm gonna read my current bio on my website like I've done with others. Marc Gunn is a Rhythm & Folk songwriter who fuses Irish and Scottish folk songs with pop culture. One brewery called it Sci F'Irish music. His musical weapon of choice is the autoharp. He breathes acoustic Rock and Roll into this folk instrument and adds a bellowing taste of rhythm & blues. Gunn found musical inspiration performing Irish drinking songs. He learned the art of performing at Renaissance faires and from his childhood idol, Elvis Presley, who said, “You've got to put on a show to draw a crowd.” His concerts are fun filled with sing along songs that get the audience's feet tapping. And now for my song… I first heard the song “Peggy Gordon” from a cassette of Irish Drinking Songs I found at Half-Price Books in Austin, Texas. I learned most of my early Irish song repertoire from that album, songs like “Whiskey in the Jar”, “Big Strong Man, “Wild Rover”, “Bog Down in the Valley” and lots more. Their version of “Peggy Gordon” was short, but memorable. I played it on and off for many years. I remember singing it at a pub in Switzerland when I met Heidi and Stef of the Celtic band Bow Triplets. In July 2009, I met my future wife, Gwen, while touring in Virginia. We had this whirlwind romance and began talking on the phone every day and went to see each other as much as possible even while I was out on tour. I was completely mesmerized by her. A few weeks later, I was back in Austin. I was scheduled to record my next studio album with Rich Brotherton. He's an incredible engineer and had done some brilliant work for Ed Miller and lots of top-notch artists in Texas. I was having trouble singing the song. I was pitchy and my voice lacked any real emotion. The lyrics have this great feeling of love and longing. Which is exactly the feeling I was having with Gwen so far away. And so… I closed my eyes, focused on Gwen, and sang. To this day, I still tell people it is one of my best recordings. Because I feel like I nailed it. And then to top it off, Rich Brotherton added some absolutely beautiful guitar work, as he did throughout that album. It is definitely one of my warmest and lushest and best-produced albums. 1:42:07 - Marc Gunn “Peggy Gordon” from The Bridge 1:46:26 - ENDA REILLY Enda Reilly is a folk singer, songwriter and guitarist from Dublin, Ireland. Firmly rooted in the Irish tradition with songs that strive for a better future, Enda Reilly's work invites you to see the world from his varied and unique perspective through each new song and project. From busking on Grafton Street to the National Concert Hall, Enda has performed on countless stages in his hometown of Dublin and beyond. 1:50:46 - Enda Reilly “Christmas True” from Christmas Is With Us 1:54:07 - CLOSING 1:54:22 - THE CHIVALROUS CRICKETS – LORD OF MISRULE The Crickets explore the roots, branches and crossroads of Celtic and English folk and American Old Time music. With equal attention to exhilarating performances and academic rigor, they bring to the stage boldly reimagined arrangements of standards and originals with traditional influence. With a particular focus on song repertoire, they're known for their rich vocal harmonies and fascinating textural blends incorporating over 15 instruments, both modern and ancient. They're a family band comprising two sisters, two couples and childhood friends. Four of their members are full-time classical musicians as well. 2:02:23 - The Chivalrous Crickets “The Lord of Misrule” from A Chivalrous Christmas The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was produced by Marc Gunn, The Celtfather. Asa Swain wrote: "Dear Marc, Thank you for playing “Banjos we have heard on high” in the Nov 28 episode (of the Celtic Christmas Podcast). It made me smile in delight. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas season. Thanks for sharing beautiful Celtic music with us year round. I've been listening to your show for about 15 years, I got a chance to chat with you at the online Boskone you attended in 2020. (On zoom) You talked about how wonderful traveling was. I haven't travelled overseas since 2019 (because of COVID), but in December my wife and I are going to spend a week exploring Iceland. We're very excited. (we'll only have 4.5 hours of sunlight each day, but we hope to see the northern lights) . All the best."
The Houghton Weavers have been entertaining folk for 47 years with their unique blend of popular folk music, humour and audience participation and they announce their annual forthcoming Autumn / Winter 2022 UK Tour. The North West's leading comedy/folk group will visit towns and cities such as Colwyn Bay, Morecambe, Darwen, Preston, Lytham St Anne's, Blackpool and Buxton. To coincide with their UK Tour, they release their brand-new single, 'Wild Mountain Thyme' on Friday 7th October, taken from their forthcoming album 'New World in the Morning' due out on Friday 14th October. "To us, this traditional Scottish Folk Song depicts the love that Queen Elizabeth II had for the beautiful Scottish Highlands. It could almost be a signature to her love and time spent north of the border. It's such a poignant and beautiful traditional song and it seems a perfect track as our tribute to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Having been working on the album for almost 2 years, through covid and into the summer of 2022, It's a mixture of self-penned and traditional songs as well as some very well-known folk covers. We have used various session musicians including Ken Nichol of Steeleye Span and the wonderful country folk guitarist Pete Frampton. The album has that Weavers comedy element but is brought back down to earth with some beautifully poignant trad folk songs. We are dedicating this album to our late Tony Berry who sadly passed away in 2019." The Houghton Weavers have been entertaining folk up and down the country and promise a fun-packed, sing-along family show with great music and funny stories galore! There will be plenty of laughter and the old familiar songs like the Blackpool Belle, Matchstalk Men and Wild Rover mixed together with some new songs, and festive perennial favourites on the Christmas Tour like Let It Snow, Bless Your Whiskers and White Christmas. Learning their craft in the folk clubs of their native North West, the group have never wavered from their original motto of "Keep Folk Smiling". Steve Millington, David Littler and Jim Berry entertain their audiences in a show of charming fun, humorous jokes, and anecdotes, together with plenty of music, varying from raucous traditional and popular Folk Songs to sing-along favourites, with beautiful ballads and original pieces included throughout. Their wide and varied repertoire and unique and well-known style ensure that no two shows in the company of The Houghton Weavers are ever the same. The band continue their non-stop success with a packed schedule of theatres and other venues, also hosting two residential weekends a year. With a large and active fan club, and growing social media following, The Houghton Weavers enjoy entertaining those young and old in a show designed for all the family to enjoy. In their time together, the band have performed thousands of concerts, recorded over 30 albums and starred in several of their own highly successful BBC radio and TV series and made countless appearances on other programmes. They guarantee a wonderful afternoon / evening of entertainment and their experience – together with their style and professionalism – ensures that, as their motto says, they always "Keep Folk Smiling". Got drunk and then got lost in Dublin... At night. We only got to see the southern towns all the way around the Southern portion. Beautiful places all over. We met a gal Bartender from Boston who went over there and hasn't left. I have your CD that has the resterant on it. Irish Dring Songs? Brodignagian Bards I think. I just love it. My daughter loves it too. She had seen a gentleman who told the story of "an Irish Christmas". You make it. I think your family might too. it's wonderful. Slainte," Ken Katen sent you a message on Patreon: "Hi, Marc - Listening to your Love of Planet Earth (#491- I'm catching up on my music podcasts), I thought it was well past time that I thank you for so many years of WONDERFUL Irish & Celtic music. I've been listening to your podcast since very nearly the beginning, sometimes more religiously than others. Sure, it's been grand to hear - and now to get to see a bit of - you, how you and your family have grown and, even tho we've never met face to face, I feel like I know you, just a bit. I remember when you moved (from Texas?) to New Orleans, when you met your LadyLove, and when your wee daughter needed such a grievous surgery (I believe I lit a candle). I hope you all are doing fine, and I'm glad I can help you here at Patreon. I wish I could do more, but I'm supporting a few artists here and [buying] music when I can. One of my favoritest memories, from many years ago now, is of bombing along the dirt ‘backcountry' roads of Joshua Tree National Park, in my then-new 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid AWD, windows up to keep the dust out, a/c on and your podcast playing LOUD. That show was one when you played a pub-ish song (I think one of yours) that was a paen to Joss Whedon, over whom you also rhapsodized before & after the song. I'd tried “Firefly,” it hadn't resonated, but you convinced me to give it another try. By the second episode I was intrigued, by the third I'd fallen hopelessly in love, both with Serenity and her crew (WHAT? only 14 episodes??!!) and with all things Whedon. I had my own grievous surgery/recovery awhile after that, and I loaded up my Netlix CD queue with Angel, based on its description of a troubled vampire trying to navigate his way through the modern world, and when I realized it was a Buffy spinoff, I went back and started watching Buffy until Angel spun off, then watched them in airing order (compulsive engineer here) until they both wrapped up. And since then, Dollhouse, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (well, a lot of it, anyway) - he's so darn [prolific]. I'm not sure whether to say “Thank you” or “Curse ye.” ;) And along the way, I've learned so much about Celtic history and culture from listening to your show - Italian Celts - who knew?? Your taste and selections have grown more and more discerning, and the old favorites come around again too, and I'm always a sucker for a beautiful ballad or a stirring dance instrumental. And your commitment to showcasing diversity in the Celtic music world is outstanding - not only your women only shows, but now your commitment putting together a Pride show of LGBT+ artists. As a gay man myself, who went to the first ever Northern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire - in my defense, I WAS still in high school - and spent some time in my 20's hanging out with the SCA, I know we fae folk have always been a big, but more-or-less closeted part of the re-creationist/Celtic music and cultural world, which [can] present as overtly misogynistic and heterocentric. Just like in real life, sometimes, I guess. But closets are for kilts. And your hand made chain mail, if you've got it. So a big rainbow THANK YOU! .?? for all you're doing to bring out its beautiful diversity. All this has been a longwinded way (I'm Sicilian and Greek, so...) of saying “Thank you” for all the pleasure you've given me. Now that I'm retired, and locked down here in San Francisco, I plan to mark my calendar for the next Celtfather show. Once we're past this dratted Crown Virus thingy, p'raps I'll be able to join you on a Celtic Invasion Vacation, if you're still doing them. Bliadhna Mhath Ùr”
There is literally no chance Andy Dalton will ever see the field again after limping off into the ether during the second quarter of Week 2 against Cincinnati. It is a new era, a time for change and a time for hope. It is the era of Justin Fields and the rest of the NFL shall bear witness as the Chicago Bears are about to reward their fans for decades of patience through horrific periods of mediocrity and worse. Let us rejoice. JF1 and the Bears visit Cleveland this upcoming weekend but first we enjoy a walk through the home opener through the eyes of Dan Doinks as he was present for the first regular season game with fans in what feels like years. 0:00 - 05:20 - New exclusive song courtesy of Darren from Ireland, Bill Doinks and the perfect ear of Coach Cuse. Other compliments to NFL Network and whoever wrote the original The Wild Rover. 05:20 - 06:29 - What's on tap tonight? 06:29 - 28:45 - Dan Doinks was at the game, let's allow him to walk through that experience. 28:45 - 80:48 - It's time for the JF1 Era, let us all embrace our new leader. The boys chat about the Bengals game while keeping a sharp eye on the week to come at Cleveland. 80:48 - 81:35 - Where can you find us on the interwebs? 81:35 - 104:55 - Hamm's N Bread. What are the hottest picks ever seen on this earth as offered by our own resident sharp, shark and whale Rick Feelsmen. Also, what NFL games catch our eye from a wagering standpoint and what's the latest with Everton? 104:55 - 117:11 - Bears Fantasy Corner. Is Bill 2-0 against Dan with his hot Bears fantasy choices? Who was the Taysom Hill Trash Fantasy Player of the Week presented by Glad? Who is going to light the lamp against the Browns this week? 117:11 - 128:16 - The B1G Minute. What should everyone be keeping their eyes on with Big Ten football, including and especially Gophers and Illini gridiron? 128:16 - 141:09 - Let's Wrap this M'Fer Up. What other brain musings are bouncing around our skulls? 141:09 - END - Special thanks to Coach Cuse, Stylz from TRIB, Daughter of Bill Doinks, Bill Doinks, and of course Lin Manuel-Miranda for the inspiration behind Helpless that closes our episode.

It began with a cassette I found at Half-Priced Books. It was a live album of this gritty Irish-sounding band singing song after song. I loved it. Those were in fact the first songs I learned for the Brobdingnagian Bards. Some stuck. Others not so much. But that album was super important to my future music career. It led me on the path of playing Irish drinking songs. It taught me how to write fun drinking songs. And of course, it established my musical style of Sci F’Irish music. Today, we’re gonna do a countdown of the Top 5 Irish drinking songs. These songs were picked and voted on by members of my Irish & Celtic Music Club and the Celtic Geeks group on Facebook. You can Vote for your favorite in those groups. Or you can also just email me your favorite. Let’s get started. 6:31 - #5 “Old Dun Cow” from St Patrick’s Day 11:03 - #4 “Johnny Jump Up” from Happy Songs of Death 14:43 - #3 “Finnegan’s Wake” from Irish Drinking Songs: The Cat Lover’s Companion 17:47 - #2 “Wild Rover” from Irish Drinking Songs: The Cat Lover’s Companion -- New Irish & Celtic Song Lyrics. Ian Lynch discusses Lankum's year, from playing sold-out shows at Vicar Street to winning the Choice Prize to touring the US... and then having to use a big chunk of the €10,000 Choice winnings to get back to Ireland when Covid-19 hit. The lockdown helped him delve deeper into his Fire Draw Near podcast, which explored the world of folk and trad music. He's in the midst of a three-part podcast on The Wild Rover. We talk about all this and more in this interview. You can support Ian and Fire Draw Near at patreon.com/firedrawnear
