Good sir! It is I, John Montagu, the fourth earl of Sandwich. Would you care for some of my bread in your mouth? Perhaps some of my exquisite and tender meats? Yes? Oh, I'm so happy for you! Then afterwards we can ask ourselves; what is a sandwich? Which one is YOUR favorite? Is baguettes a form of sandwich? Or is it a taco? And could an icecream be a sandwich? Or who would win in an oral fight between Barisbrevik and Amund? This and more, only here on Umami!Av og med: Anne Kristin Villar Sundal, Amund Glad Østensen og Jonas August Blakstad
Learn the real story of Lexington & Concord on April 19, 1775 and the Shot Heard 'Round the World — which changed America and the world forever.Well before the Declaration of Independence, the British had determined that they would end Americans' resistance to British tyranny by crushing them militarily. The British believed that they would easily cower the Americans into submission with a decisive military strike and the arrest of some of the leaders of the resistance, especially John Hancock and Samuel Adams.Follow the Patriots and the British during the lead up to the Battles of Lexington and Concord, and experience the battles first hand. Explore what really happened on Paul Revere's ride, and discover the unsung heroes Dr. Joseph Warren, William Dawes, and others. The British confrontation at Lexington sparked the Shot Heard ‘Round the World and ended in a small massacre of Americans. The British confrontation in Concord was eventually driven off, and the British were lucky to escape with their lives over a long and harrowing retreat. They suffered many casualties and inflicted barbaric attacks on Americans. The colonies were not cowed into submission but rallied to military action and to militarily surround British occupied Boston.Although it would take more than a year for Americans to make the final break with the English Empire with the Declaration of Independence, the stage was set, and over a decade of political and economic resistance to English oppression transfigured into open warfare.Highlights include the Boston Tea Party, Intolerable Acts a/k/a Coercive Acts, King George III, Lord Dartmouth a/k/a William Ledge, House of Commons, Earl of Sandwich a/k/a/ John Montagu, John Pitcairn, General Thomas Gage, Boston Port Act (1774), Green Dragon Tavern, colonial intelligence committees, John Hancock, Dr. Joseph Warren, Benjamin Church, Samuel Adams, Lexington Massachusetts, Concord Massachusetts, Paul Revere, “one if by land and two if by sea” lantern warning signal by Paul Revere, North Church, John Crozie, Cambridge Massachusetts, Sons of Liberty, William Dawes, Reverend Jonas Clark, Charlestown Neck, Captain John Parker, Sylanus Wood, Robert Douglass, Major Mitchel, Paul Revere & William Dawes Midnight Ride, April 19 1775, Buckman Tavern, Shot Heard ‘Round the World, Lieutenant John Barker, King's Own Royal Regiment of Lancaster, Dr. Samuel Prescott, General John Palmer, Phillip's Farm, Israel Bissel, colonial militia, Colonel James Barrett, Concord River, redcoats, minutemen, John Barker, Lieutenant Frederick MacKenzie, “King Hancock forever!”, Brigadier General Earl Percy, Reverend Jonas Clark, John E. This is the period of the utilitarian liberal, not of the democrat, it's 1850 and in the Cape, a newly ninted constitution had been drafted by the attorney general, William Porter. This was based on a nonracial qualified franchise - all adult males who had occupied property worth at least twenty five pounds for a year were eligible to vote. Porter had toiled on the draft of this document for the also newly minted Governor, Sir Harry Smith, who sent it to London. Porter later in 1850 had a complete change of heart as utilitarian liberals tend to do, he denounced the option of univesal suffrage — at least for men of all colours — as threatening to the colony with its in his words, “communism, socialisms, and red republicanism which had caused so much mischief in France….” There had been an attempted major communist revolution in France in 1848, which spilled over into other parts of western Europe including the land that would become known as Germany. This horrified utilitarians everywhere, no less so in the Cape Colony. As the ship bearing Smith's new constitution headed north, another was heading south and crossed each other somewhere out there on the wild untamed ocean. It was a dispatch from Colonial Secretary Earl Grey who proposed sending Irish convicts to the Cape. Smith announced this proposal to the horrified residents of Cape Town and immediately aroused a storm of agitation against the Governor. The settlers had been considering representative government for some time and this suggestion of Irish convicts arriving backfired — driving many more of the moderate thinkers into the arms of those who were agitating for some form of independent governance. The colonists regarded the Irish as a threat to their respectability and citizens used the concept as a weapon to attaack the oligarchy that ran the Cape at the time. It was a legislative council, nominated by Governors not elected by the people so it had been tainted constantly by allegations of corruption, nepotism, and a host of other maladies associated with power wielded too long by men who were mostly too greedy. The convicts duly arrived on a ship called Neptune, but they were refused entry to Cape Town, and the men sat in chains in Simon's Bay for five months. Eventually in 1850 the ship was ordered to sail away. One of the main antagonists in this crazy story was a man called John Montagu. He had been alarmed by how the Irish convict idea had radicalised even his mild-mannered friends, and so he demanded that Smith reimpose some kind of authority and stop this movement towards representative government. Montagu argued that the whole idea was anti-English, not what the British should be supporting, so Smith delayed the implementation. But what was going on was very very interesting. The hullabaloo had revealed two very distinct political movements inside the Cape. One was conservative, pro-English and pro-British government, led by Montagu, joined by the big merchants of Cape Town. They were also joined by the Eastern Cape settlers led by their flag bearer, Grahamstown Journal Editor and land speculator Robert Godlonton. Another powerful figure joined this conservative echelon, and that was the newly arrived Anglican Bishop, Robert Gray. A newspaper called the Cape Monitor was launched in October 1850 by these conservatives. The second political movement were the radicals, both British and Afrikaner, led by John Fairbairn, Christoffel Brand, Francis William Reitz and Andries Stockenstrom. They regarded the conservatives as a corrupt bunch of nepotists, an oligarchy, but they were divided by what to do about frontier policy. Fairbairn used his newspaper the South African Advertiser to defend the rights of blacks, while Brand preferred to defend the rights of the Dutch descendents against the oppression of old-English money elites. Stockenstrom had his own varied approach to both.

It's Thursday, March 30th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldView.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Israeli Prime Minister opposes criminalization of Christian evangelism Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke out against a new bill that would criminalize Christian evangelism. Last Wednesday, he tweeted, “We will not advance any law against the Christian community.” The anti-conversion bill would punish violators with at least one year in prison. Members of the United Torah Judaism Party proposed the legislation to suppress the spread of the Gospel in Israel. In a statement, a spokesman said, “Recently, the attempts of missionary groups, mainly Christians, to solicit conversion of religion have increased … the many negative repercussions, including psychological damages, warrant the intervention of the legislature.” Romans 1:16 says, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” Pope hospitalized Pope Francis has a respiratory infection and will need to spend a few days in the hospital in Rome, reports the British Broadcasting Company. The 86-year-old had breathing difficulties in recent days, but does not have COVID-19. United Methodist Church's perversion push costs more delegates The United Methodist Church is now losing its regional bodies in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. On March 18, United Methodist Church delegates from Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Estonia voted for allowing regional bodies to leave the denomination. The delegates also voted against a proposal that would have authorized the blessing of people living sexually perverted lifestyles. The split comes as United Methodists in America and western Europe are pushing support for such perverted lifestyles. Biden eager to strip students of religious liberty Members of the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Education and Workforce sent a letter to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona last Friday. The Republican representatives are challenging a Biden administration proposal that would remove protections for religious student groups. In 2020, the Trump administration established a policy known as the free inquiry rule. The rule prohibited public institutions from discriminating against religious student organizations. Now, the Education Department is moving to rescind the rule. The Republican letter referenced research from the Christian Legal Society. The research documented anti-religious discrimination in 90 campuses in 35 states in recent years. Idaho bill would end trafficking teen girls for abortion The Idaho state Senate advanced a bill Monday to end the trafficking of teenage girls to other states for abortions, reports LifeNews.com. Linda Thomas, Director of Community Outreach for Stanton International, a medical pro-life pregnancy outreach, said, “With abortions virtually banned in Idaho, Planned Parenthood and other organizations are actively coaching and luring women across state lines for abortions. This is abortion trafficking.” The bill already passed the Idaho House. It's expected to pass the state Senate, and Republican Governor Brad Little will likely sign it. Marriage is good for women's physical and mental health A new study published in Global Epidemiology found marriage is good for women's physical and mental health. The study examined 11,830 American female nurses who were deciding on marriage in the 1990s. Twenty-five years later, the women who got married had a 35% lower risk of death compared with the women who did not get married. The married women also had lower risks of cardiovascular diseases and depression. Dr. Brendan Case and Dr. Ying Chen at Harvard University helped conduct the study. In a Wall Street Journal column, they wrote, “Our findings, added to an already extensive literature showing the value of marriage, ought to serve as a wake-up call for a society in significant denial about this crucial element of flourishing.” Protestant missionaries arrived in Hawaii 203 years ago And finally, the first Protestant missionaries arrived at the Sandwich Islands, now known as Hawaii, on this day in history in 1820. That was the original name that James Cook, a British explorer, chose in honor of John Montagu, a British statesman known as the 4th Earl of Sandwich who invented the sandwich. The missionaries were sent by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, America's first organized missionary society. The first missionaries to Hawaii came thanks to a young Hawaiian named Henry Obookiah. He traveled to the United States and became a Christian. As one of the first Hawaiians to convert, he urged for his teachers to send missionaries back to his homeland. He died in 1818, but his wish would come true. Describing the first missionaries to Hawaii, Historian Peter Young noted, “Most of them were young people, still in their twenties, full of life and enthusiasm. All were pious . . . Some were scholars able, when the native language had been mastered, to put into Hawaiian the Scriptures from the original Hebrew and Greek.” 1 Timothy 4:12 says, “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set for the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, March 30th in the year of our Lord 2023. What is his purpose in inventing the sandwich? In 1762, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich®, invented the meal that changed dining forever. As the story goes, he was playing cards and did not want to leave the gaming table to eat. It's a question that has left many puzzled. What, in fact, is a sandwich? Is it the classic two slices of bread, Earl of Sandwich creation? Or is it simply anything in a similar arrangement? In this week's podcast, we discuss sandwiches. Tom harks back to his Swedish heritage by posing the question, is an open-sandwich a sandwich? From here we discuss logical positivism, neural networks and Quine's seminal work ‘Two Dogmas of Empiricism'. Finally, we share some of our favourite sandwich creations and experiences. A few things we mentioned in this podcast: - Logical Empiricism https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/logical-empiricism/ - Two Dogmas of Empiricism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_Dogmas_of_Empiricism - John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Montagu,_4th_Earl_of_Sandwich For more information on Aleph Insights visit our website https://alephinsights.com or to get in touch about our podcast email podcast@alephinsights.com Image by FreeFoodImages via Wikimedia Commons
A relatively unknown who had an unfortunate start, became a big influencer.
Welcome to August 7th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a moveable feast and the oldest military honor. John Montagu was obsessed with gambling. So much so that he played cards for hours on end, even forgetting at times to eat. Then one day, he devised a meal that could be eaten with one hand. He requested that a servant bring him some meat between two pieces of bread, and thus the Earl of Sandwich created the, well, the sandwich. Since then, this portable meal has become one of the most popular finger foods in the world. And with so many good choices, from a multilayered club to the humble peanut butter and jelly, we decided that you need a whole month to celebrate. During National Sandwich Month, enjoy packing your meal on the go and celebrate the Earl who started it all. Purple Heart Day honors the extraordinary men and women who are of the Military Order of The Purple Heart. George Washington first created the Badge of Merit in 1782, which was awarded to six veterans of the Revolutionary War. The modern day Purple Heart, which bears Washington's image, was given to General Douglas MacArthur in 1944. MacArthur helped to change the requirements that limit the award to only those wounded or killed in combat. Today it is estimated that the oldest military honor has been bestowed on nearly 1.9 million people since it was created. On Purple Heart Day we thank all those who have dedicated their lives in service to our country. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. During my visit to the former Montagu family home, Hinchingbrooke House in Cambridgeshire, I join my father in law, John Montagu, the 11th Earl of Sandwich and one of his sisters, Lady Kate Hunloke to explore the upper floors of the house. Here, they find the nursery where they spent many hours as children and the family bedrooms with views which once stretched out across meadows and fields. Hearing the memories and childhood stories has a powerful effect on me, who finds the experience intensely emotional. This Obsession Led To One Of The Most Famous Finger Foods! Welcome to August 4th, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a portable meal and one smart cookie. During National Sandwich Month, enjoy packing your fun on the go. Though you may not be as obsessed as the Earl who started it all. Ruth Wakefield and her husband Kenneth ran the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. Ruth was a renowned baker, but is best known for adding semisweet chocolate to her butterscotch cookie dough. This recipe became a regional favorite, but during World War II it caused a cookie craze. Soldiers from Massachusetts that were stationed overseas began to receive chocolate chip cookies in care packages from home. Soon Wakefield was inundated with requests for her recipe from all around the globe. Nestle offered her a lifetime supply of chocolate in exchange for it, and to this day the Toll House recipe is printed on every bag of chocolate chips. On National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day celebrate the sweet success of one smart cookie. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day.
