Indagini - La pasticceria Capriccio di Torino
Raymond Bisha introduces the latest instalment in the Capriccio label's exploration of rarely performed or recorded symphonic works by Miklós Rózsa, outlining his maturation not only into one of the most successful film composers of all time, but also the creator of equally fine concert works. The album's programme comprises his Rhapsody for Cello, in which the young composer found his true style; the Notturno Ungherese (“a nostalgic night piece, harking back to the memories of my childhood in Hungary”); and the late Sinfonia concertante for violin and cello, a fiendishly difficult work that is among Rózsa's finest, least filmic concert works, and one of his most underrated.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for August 5, 2024 is: capricious kuh-PRISH-us adjective Capricious is a formal word that describes someone or something governed or characterized by impulsivity or unpredictability. // The employees were at the mercy of a capricious manager who always seemed to impose deadlines at the last minute. See the entry > Examples: “Tornadoes are among the planet's most fearsome phenomena, with terrifying and capricious wind speeds measured as high as 300 mph. And the U.S. sees more than any other country.” — Doyle Rice, USA Today, 9 May 2024 Did you know? The adjective capricious and its close relation, the noun caprice (a synonym of whim), both come via French from the Italian word capriccio, which has disputed origins. Capriccio originally referred not to a sudden desire but to a sudden shiver of horror and likely comes from the Italian capo, meaning “head,” and riccio, the word for “hedgehog.” The implication was that someone who shuddered in fear or horror was said to have a “hedgehog head,” meaning that the person's hair stood on end like the spines of a hedgehog. The link between a whim and a shiver of horror is notably tenuous, though, and a possible link to Italian capra, meaning “goat,” has also been suggested, given the whimsy goats seem to employ in their gamboling. (A full treatment of the disputed etymology can be found here.) Whatever its origins, capriccio came to mean “whim, fancy,” which directly relates to its uses today. Something done in a capricious manner is done on a whim, as in “a capricious decision to join the circus.”
Hatte man damals keine anderen Sorgen? Kann man „Capriccio“ jenseits solch zeithistorischer Betrachtungen ernst nehmen? Im Musiksalon versucht „Presse“-Musikkritiker Wilhelm Sinkovicz Antworten zu finden.

SynopsisOn today's date in 1755, Montezuma, an opera by German Baroque composer Carl Heinrich Graun, had its premiere performance at the Berlin Court Opera of Frederick II, King of Prussia. Frederick supervised the rehearsals, which isn't all that surprising, since he had drafted the opera's libretto.Despite his well-deserved reputation as a military leader, Frederick the Great also was a talented musician and composer. As a young prince, he had tried to run away from home to pursue a musical career. His royal father was not amused. Heads rolled — one of them belonging to Frederick's favorite music teacher — and thereafter Frederick focused on his military studies until he could ascend the throne. As king, Frederick built an opera house in Berlin and called some of Europe's finest composers to his court — but also transformed Prussia into the military superpower of Europe. Some speculate that Frederick's choice of Montezuma as an opera subject might be psychologically revealing. Perhaps Frederick saw the artistic, peace-loving, passive side of his nature in the tragic Mexican king and his aggressive, military side in Spanish invader Cortez. As Freud might have said a century or so later: “Very interesting.”Music Played in Today's ProgramCarl Heinrich Graun (1703-1759) Montezuma Overture; German Chamber Academy; Johannes Gortizki, cond. Boult had led the UK premiere of Berg's excoriating setting of Georg Büchner's play about a war-scarred veteran driven to madness and murder in 1934, although only Act II of that performance survives. This complete 1949 recording with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Heinrich Nillius's Wozzeck and Suzanne Danco's Marie – only the second UK performance – adds to Boult's and the opera's stature on disc. Recorded live in London's Royal Albert Hall, it is a remarkable document of an exhilarating performance.Boult's pioneering championing of ‘new' music is also heard in his recording of Stravinsky's Capriccio, with the BBC SO and the prodigiously gifted Australian Noel Mewton-Wood taking the piano line.TracksCD1Alban Berg (1885-1935)Wozzeck, Op. 7, Act I Scene 1: The Captain's Room (8:25) Scene 2: An Open Field Outside the Town (6:33) Scene 3: Marie's Room (7:54) Scene 4: The Doctor's Study (7:20) Scene 5: Street Before Marie's Door (3:12) Act II Scene 1: Marie's Room (5:05) Scene 2: Street in Town (8:35) Scene 3: Street Before Marie's Door (3:14) Scene 4: Tavern Garden (10:16) Scene 5: Guardroom in the Barracks (4:48) CD2Act III Scene 1: Marie's Room (4:56) Scene 2: Forest Path by the Pool (4:26) Scene 3: A Low Tavern (2:42) Scene 4: Forest Path by a Pool (4:42) Orchestral Interlude – Adagio (3:22) Scene 5: Street Before Marie's Door (1:41) Sir Adrian Boult recalls his years with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, in conversation with Bernard Keeffe (9:17) Igor StravinskyCapriccio (16:54) I. New York City Ballet's Music Director Andrew Litton returns to host this week's See The Music episode, devoted to Igor Stravinsky's Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra, the score for the Rubies section of George Balanchine's Jewels. Litton describes the captivating details of this composition from 1929, a prime example of the uniquely symbiotic relationship between Balanchine and Stravinsky, with a little help from Solo Pianist Stephen Gosling, who demonstrates some of the most challenging excerpts of the piece. Kate Molleson explores the life of György Ligeti with guest, Danny Driver Known to millions through the film director Stanley Kubrick's use of his music in 2001: A Space Odyssey, Ligeti's music reflects the seismic events taking place in central Europe in the mid-twentieth century - shifting borders, war, totalitarianism and for many, exile. These harrowing experiences all made a deep imprint on him and his music. He was born in 1923 into a Jewish Hungarian family in an area that had become part of Romanian Transylvania. After years of state repression, in 1956 at the onset of the Hungarian revolution, Ligeti made a dramatic escape on foot to the West. Freed from state intervention, he was to remain artistically and personally independent from any particular orthodoxies for the rest of his life. He died in 2006 at the age of 83. Ligeti regarded the whole world as the material for his music. He was fascinated by anything and everything: philosophy, science, the arts, literature - Alice in Wonderland was one of his favourite books. His music can be playful, at times wickedly macabre. He loved patterns, he loved rhythm, he dived into mathematical concepts of immense complexity but was equally curious about history, folklore, the cosmos and the natural world. From the piano, Danny Driver, a huge Ligeti enthusiast, opens up the magical universe Ligeti creates in his piano music, with a special focus on the three sets of piano studies. Synopsis Today's date marks the birthday of one of the most prolific 19th century women composers. Emilie Luise Friderica Mayer was born on May 14th in 1812 in the North German town of Friedland, the third of five children and the eldest daughter of a well-to-do pharmacist. No one else in her family was musically inclined, but after the death of her father when she was 28 years old, a comfortable inheritance enabled Emilie to devote the rest of her life to music and composition.Despite the barriers to women as composers in her time, Emilie Mayer wrote and published orchestral and chamber works – including eight symphonies over a dozen concert overtures -- and starting in the 1840s through to the time of her death in 1883, got them performed in Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Lyon, Brussels and Vienna. Her early works are very much in the classical Viennese tradition of Beethoven, but as the decades passed, her style became much more in the high Romantic style. For most of the 20th century her works remained largely forgotten, but a 21st century reappraisal has resulted in new interest, recordings, and performances of the symphonies and overtures of Emilie Mayer. Music Played in Today's Program Emile Mayer (1812-1883) – Symphony No. 4 in b (New Brandenburg Philharmonie; Stefan Malzew, cond.) Capriccio 5339
Synopsis On today's date in 1837, the Princess Cristina Belgiojoso-Trivulzio, scored the social coup of the season at her Parisian salon. Ostensibly, it was the culmination of a three-day fundraiser in aid of Italian political refugees, but it really was the artistic equivalent of a prize fight – the fists in question pummeling the piano keyboard, a digital confrontation of the two leading virtuoso pianists of the day, Sigismund Thalberg and Franz Liszt. Thalberg was up first, playing his own Fantasy on Themes from Rossini's opera, Moses. Liszt followed with one of his fantasias based on operatic themes. The music critic for the prestigious Journal des Debats was present, and he wrote, “Never was Liszt more controlled, more thoughtful, more energetic, more passionate. Never has Thalberg played with greater verve and tenderness. Each used every one of his resources. It was an admirable joust. The most profound silence fell over the noble crowd assembled, and, finally, Liszt and Thalberg were both proclaimed victors by this glittering and intelligent assembly. Thus: two victors and no vanquished.” When asked for her verdict who had “won” the contest, the hostess, Princess Cristina replied with consummate diplomacy: “Thalberg,” she said, “is the first pianist in the world – Liszt is unique.” Music Played in Today's Program Sigismund Thalberg (1812 - 1871) Fantasy on Rossini's "The siege of Corinth" Francesco Nicolosi, piano Marco Polo 8.223367 Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886) Fantasia on Italian Operatic Melodies Andreas Pistorius, piano Capriccio 10076

The pianist Frank Dupree's new album for Capriccio is his third devoted to the music of Kapustin: his previous concerto album, which included the Fourth Piano Concerto, made it to the short list in the Concerto category for last year's Gramophone Classical Music Awards, and this new release, as well as containing the Fifth Piano Concerto, also includes the Concerto for two pianos and percussion, and the Sinfonietta for two pianos, both works find Frank joined by Adrian Brendle, and Dominik Beykirch conducts the Berlin RSO in the Fifth Piano Concerto. James Jolly caught up with Frank to talk about how he discovered Kapustin's music and how it perfectly plays to his strengths as both a classical and jazz pianist.
András Schiff is one of the greatest J.S. Bach interpreters of our time and his dedication to Bach's oeuvre has been extensively recorded on ECM's New Series, receiving wide acclaim with his interpretation of the Goldberg Variations (2001) and the Six Partitas (2007), before taking on both books of the Well-Tempered Clavier (2012). The New York Times: “Mr. Schiff is, in Bach, a phenomenon. He doesn't so much perform it as emit, breathe it.” Here Schiff returns to Bach, this time on the clavichord, and presents a special selection, spanning the Capriccio in B-flat major, Bach's Two- and Three-Part Inventions as well as the Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue, the Four Duets and Ricercar à 3 from Musikalisches Opfer.Track Listing:1 Capriccio sopra la lontananza de il fratro dilettissimo BWV 992 - I. “I do feel that we are infinite choice makers. You make millions of choices all the time. Make the right choice and if you make the wrong choice, understand that mistakes are great teachers. Learn from that and move on. I do have this sense of responsibility of passing something on a love of dance history that really informs my process. Speaking in old language in a new way with a contemporary accent. Something so wonderful about dance and the arts is that you never stop learning. It is like always just this long process, and I continue. Students teach me every day. It is such a gift. It is probably the most important thing I can think of. Especially when I think of two things. In terms of history, the humanities show us how we were, why we were, and while we were...But then I also think about the future. What are we doing now? What seeds are we planting to inform the future?...And I said it earlier about making sense out of a chaotic universe where bad things happen to good people. Arts will help you figure that out.”Seán Curran began his dance training with traditional Irish step dancing as a young boy in Boston, Massachusetts.
