For episode 164, we welcomed Steve Stratton to the show! Steve started his military career at the White House Communications Agency supporting the needs of President's Ford and Carter, Vice President's Rockefeller and Mondale and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. His work took him around the world introducing him to new cultures, ways of thinking, and the various agencies tasked with projecting and protecting American interests abroad. The jump to the US Secret Service was an easy transition but after several years and an election campaign, Steve left for the commercial sector. Steve was awarded his Green Beret in 1986. From the 80's through 2000 he deployed with 20th Special Forces on counter-drug and training missions in the SOUTHCOM region. His civilian contractor time includes support for USCENTCOM, USSOCOM, and several intelligence agencies. Today he is retired but advising cyber security companies that support the warfighter and intelligence community. When he is not writing, you can find him mountain biking, trout fishing, or hunting in Colorado. His first novel, Shadow Tier, was named a 2023 Bronze Medal winner by the Military Writers Society of America. This book was a part of the Spear Talk book club! For episode 155, we welcomed Jason Patt, D-ABMDI, to the show! Jason Patt spent 20+ years in law enforcement, recently retiring as the Chief of his department. He specialized in forensic death investigations throughout most of his career. During this time, he served on many specialty units, including the local major crimes task force, with a federal law enforcement agency as a task force officer, and as a K9 officer. Before his prestigious law enforcement career, Jason served eight honorable years in the United States Navy, where he was stationed in Pearl Harbor, aboard the USS Reuben James FFG-57, followed by Great Lakes Naval Training Center. Throughout his eight years he did four deployments, including the final one to Jalibah, Iraq in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Jason is a boarded diplomate with the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigations (D-ABMDI). He is the author of "The Road Death Traveled". For episode 149, we welcomed legendary FBI undercover agent, Joe Pistone, to the show! Joe worked undercover as "Donnie Brasco" between September 1976 and July 1981, as part of an infiltration primarily into the Bonanno crime family, and to a lesser extent the Colombo crime family, two of the Five Families of the Mafia in New York City. The evidence collected by Pistone led to over 200 indictments and over 100 convictions of Mafia members—and some responsible for his infiltration were also killed by other mobsters. Pistone was a pioneer in long-term undercover work. Pistone's work later helped convince the FBI that using undercover agents in lieu of relying exclusively on informants was a crucial tool in law enforcement. Pistone detailed his undercover experience in his 1988 book Donnie Brasco: My Undercover Life in the Mafia, the basis of the 1997 film about his life. For episode 146, we welcomed Keith Vitali to the show! His introduction into martial arts came in 1975 at the University of South Carolina, where he was awarded his first black belt after two years. Over the course of the next ten years, Vitali competed in a large number of martial arts tournaments, winning most of them, as well as being ranked the "#1 Karate Fighter in the USA". His number of wins landed him an honored place in Black Belt Magazine's Black Belt Hall of Fame in 1981. The magazine also named Vitali as one of the ten best fighters of all time. Vitali has appeared in a number of martial arts films, including Superfights, Revenge of the Ninja, Wheels on Meals, The Cut Off, No Retreat, No Surrender 3: Blood Brothers, and American Kickboxer. Vitali has since focused on producing child safety videos and writing children's literature. His book on bullying entitled, "Bullyproof Your Child" was released in fall 2007.
