It's Friday and we're talking Grammys, we're talking Brad Pitt...but mostly we're talking about Julia Roberts in her Academy Award winning role - Erin Brockovich!
In 2000, the movie “Erin Brockovich” helped put the small town of Hinkley, California, on the map. The movie stars Julia Roberts as a determined law clerk who takes on the massive utility company Pacific Gas & Electric, which had been dumping chromium-6, the dangerous chemical, in Hinkley's groundwater. Brockovich is depicted gathering evidence and building a legal case against the utility. And she prevails: The movie concludes with a landmark settlement awarded to residents. But that Hollywood ending isn't the whole story. Many residents say the settlement didn't go far to cover mounting medical bills and moving costs. And the chromium-6 cleanup proved to be slow. It was stymied by the difficulty of containing widespread contamination and a small local water board lacking the power to enforce stricter standards. Today, Hinkley is a ghost town, and the water there is still contaminated with chromium-6.On the 50th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act, investigative reporter Silvia Foster-Frau has traveled the country reporting on where America has fallen short in its promise of providing clean drinking water. In the final installment in this series, she returns to Hinkley to learn why, even with a massive spotlight, it can be so hard to clean up toxic tap water.Today's show was produced by Emma Talkoff. It was edited by Monica Campbell and mixed by Sam Bair.Subscribe to The Washington Post here.
Now that we've got The Cat in the Hat out of our system, it's time to kick off our November theme of the month! With Gladiator II coming soon, we're taking a look at the original plus some of the other Best Picture nominated films of 2000. First up: we're joined by screenwriter and Steven Soderbergh fanatic Joaquin Dominguez to discuss Erin Brockovich. The first of Steven Soderbergh's two Best Picture nominated films in the year 2000, this is also the one that garnered Julia Roberts her Oscar. Erin Brockovich follows the titular legal assistant who uncovers an environmental conspiracy in Hinkley, California. She and her boss, the lawyer Ed Masry, begin a legal fight on behalf of the residents to get them justice. Erin Brockovich is a classic underdog story, with Brockovich, Masry, and Hinkley taking on a massive corporation. But, will it stand out from other similar films? What's your favorite legal drama? Let us know at cinemaontappodcast@gmail.com. Joaquin's new film Watch Them Come Blood recently premiered in Los Angeles to a sold out crowd. The film is continuing to screen around the country, and is coming to physical media in the future. Reach out for more information on opportunities to see it!
Welcome to Part Two of our MoviesThat Happen to Star Aaron Eckhart miniseries (MTHtSAE II). Can you picture Aaron Eckhart as a gruff-but-loveable biker? Casting director Margery Simkin and director Stephen Soderbergh sure could! Throw a bandana and some muttonchops on that chiseled face and ta-da: movie magic?Fortunately for America, Eckhart's character is not the focus of Erin Brockovich. Instead, we follow Julia Roberts as Brockovich, a working-class single mother who stands up to the stuffy corporate lawyers (yay!) and the obese woman at her workplace (yeah?) and the snippy Black woman at her workplace (uh…) as she bravely fights for a settlement on behalf of victims of corporate pollution (yay again!). Of course, many of the plaintiffs received only a pittance, which is not mentioned in the movie (okay). On the other hand, we get to watch Brockovich being handed a cheque for two million dollars at the end (ffs).Honestly, this was an exhausting watch, an antiquated bit of proto-girlboss biopic-ery void of tension or dramatic movement after the opening twenty minutes. Soderbergh seems to know this, occasionally building out moments that challenge the protagonist, only to drop it in favour of the next sassy retort or deeply unpleasant insult delivered by a righteous Roberts who loves punching down just as much as up. Brockovich is the only real character in a world of ciphers and foils, and the few characters who assert any agency eventually leave. On the plus side, Roberts and Finney deliver great performances. And there's that one guy who looks like the most 2000s Mighty Mighty Bosstones fan of all time. We see you.
For episode 163, we welcomed Erin Brockovich to the show! Erin is an American paralegal, consumer advocate, and environmental activist who was instrumental in building a case against Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) involving groundwater contamination in Hinkley, California with the help of attorney Ed Masry in 1993. Their successful lawsuit was the subject of an Oscar-winning film, Erin Brockovich (2000), starring Julia Roberts as Brockovich and Albert Finney as Masry. She is the president of Brockovich Research & Consulting. In our discussion we covered how she became a paralegal, what it means to be an environmental activist, the legacy of the famous Hinkley case, the concept of "profits over people", the Flint, MI water crisis, the role of fitness in her life, having a positive mindset, being portrayed by Julia Roberts, and everything in between. This was a dream guest for me. #erinbrockovich #environmentalactivism #paralegal Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSPeYAFp2QDiVpnTn8WKRQw/join Learn more about your ad choices. We're finishing up Women's History Month with a special episode on Erin Brockovich! For those not familiar with the film or the person, Erin Brockovich was a central figure in the legal case against Pacific Gas & Electric, and the finding that PG&E caused severe hexavalent chromium contamination of drinking water in Hinckley, California. We'll be talking with a colleague from HRP's join venture partner, Thunderbird Environmental, who was instrumental in the sites remediation. We also have a discussion with some of HRP's leading ladies on what the film meant to them. Last, we'll wrap with a play hard section recorded at HRP's March Madness/Sausagefest/St. Patrick's Day/3:12 Celebration!A reminder that our Play Hard segment is also available in video form! Erin Brockovich is an environmental activist, consumer advocate, renowned crusader, and champion fighter whose courageous case against Pacific Gas and Electric was dramatized in an Oscar-winning film that earned Julia Roberts an Oscar in 2001. Julia's Brockovich may be frozen in time in the late 20th century, but Erin's Brockovich is fixated on the issues of today. She is older and wiser, yet wickedly funny and refreshing. Nonetheless, like her cinematic Ghost of Brockovich Past, she is still a force of nature and FOR nature. Erin is the president of Brockovich Research & Consulting and the founder of the Erin Brockovich Foundation, a nonprofit organization created to educate and empower communities in their fight for clean water. In Erin's latest book —"Superman's Not Coming: Our National Water Crisis and What We the People Can Do about it" — she makes clear why we are in trouble and warns us that if we're waiting for someone to save us, Superman isn't coming. Nor is the government or the environmental agencies. No one is going to solve this for us. It is up to us, we the people, and Erin shows us how. ABC's “Rebel,” inspired by Erin's life today and starring Katey Sagal, aired in 2021 and is available on streaming platforms. This is Erin's fourth appearance on JONES.SHOW! Twenty years ago, Julia Roberts won an Oscar for her portrayal of maverick environmental activist Erin Brockovich in the film of the same name. These days, in addition to her work on water safety and toxins in communities, Brockovich has taken on the climate emergency. In her mind, the connection is fundamental. “Climate change is about too much water, not enough water, no water, drought, flooding,” Brockovich says, adding, “It’s becoming real because it's tangible, it's touchable. You're running from it, you’re breathing it. You're swimming in it. You could be drowning in it. Trump continues to wage a battle to overturn the election. Republican leaders from Michigan’s two legislative chambers are scheduled to meet with Trump today to strategize about how to overturn the election. Lindsay Graham potentially commits felony election crime by attempting to lean on Georgia’s Secretary of State to throw out all the mail ballots from counties with a high rate of signature mismatch. Erin Brockovich, the environmental activist who most Americans came to know through the Julia Roberts film based on her life, wrote a piece in the Guardian asking the question on most progressives minds: “Joe Biden: Are You Kidding Me?” Brockovich focused on Biden’s decision to choose Michael McCabe to head the EPA. McCabe is a former communications consultant for the chemical giant DuPont. It wasn’t just the EPA, though. Biden’s pick to head the Office of Public Engagement, Louisiana congressman Cedric Richmond, also raised red flags for progressives. Black Lives Matter activists want to see conservative Democrats’ receipts for their claims that “defund the police” messaging was responsible for down-ballot losses. Still waiting. As the national director of the Working Families Party, Maurice Mitchell told Politico, “This is the tip of the spear. They are using this ‘defund’ fight as a proxy for a broader ideological fight.” Marco Rubio lays out GOP plans for the Biden administration: they plan on blocking all Biden’s cabinet appointments because Democrats mean. Erin Brockovich was vaulted into national recognition in 2000, after the eponymous movie starring Julia Roberts made her a water activism icon. Famous for her focus on contamination, Brockovich says there is a larger threat facing water's very existence: climate change, and the impact it has on dwindling freshwater supplies, longer droughts and hotter weather. Superman isn't coming to protect our water or environment, writes Brockovich in her latest book — and neither are corporations, politicians or the “gutted” EPA. How can individuals and communities take collective action to safeguard our environment and our resources? What are today's leading activists doing to create change that lasts? Join us for a conversation on speaking truth to power with Erin Brockovich, author of Superman's Not Coming: Our National Water Crisis and What We the People Can Do About It. Poor attention to aging infrastructure and poor choices in what we allow in our local water is leading us slowly toward a crisis of water quality. On the front line of that crisis and trying to warn us all is veteran muckraker and inspirational storyteller, Erin Brockovich. Brockovich's battle on behalf of people victimized by big corporations became an Oscar nominated tale in which Erin was played by Julia Roberts and became part of popular culture. Since then, Erin has used the spotlight on her from the movie to fight for those in need and now she's calling on you to stand up for yourself in the battle to keep our water safe and clean.
Over 40,000 chemicals currently find their way into a litany of consumer products. Although many are toxic, less than 1% have been tested for human safety. Nonetheless, great quantities can still be found in our drinking water. How is this possible? Shouldn’t clean water be a fundamental right? These questions are both fair and important. Unfortunately, trusted regulatory bodies like the EPA often fail to adequately protect us. Science is often manipulated by companies that put profit over public health. And thus, industry pollution continues unsupervised -- and the consumer protection laws we do have in place remain unenforced. To better understand this reality -- how we got here and where to go from here -- I sat down with one of the most famous names in environmental activism.Meet the the singular and eminent Erin Brockovich.Best known as the legal file clerk who battled PG&E over polluted water in the town of Hinckley, CA, Ms. Brockovich was instrumental in architecting a case that resulted in the largest settlement ever paid in a direct-action lawsuit in U.S. history. It’s a story that ended up on the big screen. Garnered Julia Roberts an Oscar for her portrayal of Erin under the direction of the great Steven Soderberg. And turned the name Erin Brockovich into not only a household name, but a verb.Unfortunately, America’s waters didn’t cease to be polluted after the closing credits of the film. In fact, they’ve only gotten worse -- a fact that should leave us all deeply concerned. And highly motivated to act.Because Superman's not coming.Today Erin delivers a master class on water, with one resounding takeaway: the problem is our's to solve.Simply put, we cannot rely on corporations or the government to protect us. An admittedly disheartening realization, it's also empowering -- a call to citizen activism to forge the better world we deserve. It's a theme Ms. Brockovich explores in her new book, Superman's Not Coming (and recently launched podcast of the same name), which both take a brutally honest look at how mismanagement, chemical spills, mishandling of toxic waste and sludge, and even fake studies have created the perfect storm in terms of damaging water systems in the United States. The result is making us sick. And destroying the environment along the way. This is a conversation about the outdated policies that perpetuate this pollution cycle, and the evil-overlord-level of deception that is happening in the corporations and government bodies we blindly trust. We discuss the regulatory landscape of clean water. How what most consider a human right has become politicized and weaponized. How to better educate yourself about your own water supply. And the actions to undertake in the event of an issue. In addition, we explore Erin’s upbringing. Her struggles with dyslexia. The experiences and mentors that fuel her perseverance. The case that brought her fame. And the vital work she has done since.Brimming with unexpected optimism, I think you will find Erin’s message a welcome break from the relentless apocalyptic doom presented by the 24-hour news cycle.A mighty, whip-smart and imposing force of nature, for many years I've deeply admired and respected Ms. Brockovich from afar. This conversation was an honor. And a powerful reminder of the indelible influence of the individual to create positive change and awaken a movement. In this era of uncertainty and anxiety, some things are a reliable fixture. Exhibit A: The tenacity of Erin Brockovich, who took on PG&E for its water contamination, won a mammoth settlement for her clients, and inspired an Oscar-winning film.In the eponymous role, Julia Roberts was plenty feisty but by many accounts she wasn't as in-your-face fiery as the real Erin Brockovich, a self-described "foul-mouthed, short-skirted blonde woman from Kansas."Brockovich has a new book, Superman's Not Coming: Our National Water Crisis and What We the People Can Can Do About It. “We are amid a major water crisis that is beyond anything you can imagine,” Brockovich writes. The book is filled with righteous anger directed at corporations who “lie, cheat, sue, intimidate, falsify documents, and outright bully."The book is getting rave reviews, so it seems fitting to replay the episode from a few months ago, in which Erin talks about her mother Betty Jo Pattee, who passed on to Erin her own stick-to-itiveness.If you'd like to contribute a word to the audio word montage that opens each episode, please send a recording of one word that best describes your mother and send it to us at OurMothersOurselves@gmail.comFollow us on Instagram: @Our_Mothers_Ourselves and Twitter: @MothersSelves
She is the co-author of "Take It from Me: Life's a Struggle but You Can Win" and she recently launched a podcast, "Superman's Not Coming," on PodcastOne. In Erin's long-awaited new book —"Superman's Not Coming: Our National Water Crisis and What We the People Can Do about it" — she makes clear why we are in trouble and warns us that if we're waiting for someone to save us, Superman isn't coming. Nor is the government or the environmental agencies. No one is going to solve this for us. It is up to us, we the people, and Erin shows us how. Actress Katey Sagal has accepted the challenge of bringing today's eternally turbo-charged Erin to life on television. The "The Sons of Anarchy" and "Married With Children" veteran—most recently seen on "The Conners"—is set to star in "Rebel," the Brockovich-inspired drama that has been picked up for a pilot commitment at ABC. Sagal will be joined by castmates Andy Garcia and John Corbett. This is Erin's third appearance on JONES.SHOW! Erin Brockovich, legal clerk, consumer advocate, and environmental activist, was a guest recently on WZOE’s “Wake Up Princeton” with Paul Bomleny.Brockovich was instrumental in building a case against the Pacific Gas and Electric Company of California and her successful lawsuit was the subject of the 2000 film, Erin Brockovich, which starred Julia Roberts in the Oscar-winning title role.Without any formal legal education, Brockovich was instrumental in building the suit against PG&E, alleging contamination of drinking water in Hinkley, California with a chemical known as chromium VI. The $333 million became the largest settlement ever paid in a direct action lawsuit. In the years since, Brockovich has continued to serve as an anti-pollution advocate around the country, especially as a champion for clean water. Her new book “Superman’s Not Coming” has been called the activist version of teaching a person to fish. She tackles the environmental concerns of the planet but says no one is going to solve this for us. It is up to us, we the people."Superman's Not Coming" is available at her website brockovich.com.

Not all heroes wear capes. Some are able to bring a community to its feet and a corporation to its knees in a mini-skirt and stilettos. Carrie Kohan is a national child advocate, federal government witness, and public spokesperson who changed the face of a country. In addition to changing Canadian law, Carrie founded Project Guardian and Mad Mothers Against Pedophiles (MMAP) in 1998. What MADD did for drinking and driving, Carrie wanted to do for pedophilia and the protection of children, by educating the public and change the laws. Be that advocate Your cause needs a voice When Carrie Cohan began her journey as a child advocate, pedophilia was a taboo subject. No one wanted to acknowledge or talk about it. As a lobbyist and advocate, she was instrumental in changing fourteen laws in Canada that now protect children from harm. Her legacies include Amber Alert, the Provincial and National Sex Offender Registries, the Child Protection Act (online sexual exploitation), amendments to the divorce act and immigration laws. She is the namesake of the "Carrie's Guardian Angel Law" which asks for a 20-year minimum sentence for serial predators and pedophiles. The Five Lessons of Life is a true story of how two near-death experiences changed Carrie Kohan's life forever. Listening to Carrie's interview will give you goosebumps. She is not a lawyer and, in fact, has a learning disability but she has lobbied against some of the top lawyers in Canada - and won.
Say the name Erin Brockovich and you think, strong, tough, stubborn and sexy. Erin is all that and more. In the ’90s, Erin Brockovich spearheaded an investigation revealing that Pacific Gas & Electric had been poisoning the water in Hinkley, California. As chronicled in the 2000 film “Erin Brockovich,” PG&E was forced to pay out the largest toxic tort injury settlement in U.S. history: $333 million. Since that time, Erin has continued in her quest to empower the people to “right wrong.” It seems that 2020 is shaping up to be another breakout year for Erin. Her new podcast will launch this spring and her latest book, “Superman’s Not Coming,” is scheduled for release on August 25, 2020. Additionally, ABC has given a put pilot dedication to “Insurgent,” a drama inspired by Erin’s life in the years following “Erin Brockovich,” the movie. The program is being written and executive produced by “Gray’s Anatomy” showrunner, Krista Vernoff. She is a modern-day “David” who loves a good brawl with today’s “Goliaths.” She thrives on being the voice for those who don’t know how to yell. She is a rebel. She is a fighter. She is a mother. She is a woman. She is you and me. JONES.SHOW is a weekly podcast featuring host Randall Kenneth Jones (author, speaker & creative communications consultant) and Susan C. “I never thought you had to be any one way to be a person and to be kind and to learn,” says Erin Brockovich, who continues to redefine what it means to be an activist. The tough news, Brockovich tells us, is that Superman is not coming to save the environment, to clean up our water, to kick harmful chemicals out of our neighborhoods. But here’s why Brockovich is optimistic: We’ve had the power all along to rescue ourselves. We do not need to wait for oversight that does not exist. We simply have to believe that we can, that we should, that we have every right to speak up and speak out. And then we can start small, we can start local, and we can make the kind of big, life-altering changes that Brockovich has helped inspire all over the world. (For more, see The goop Podcast hub.)

During a recording of the Water Nerd’s Guide to Happy Hour episode, their pod was pirated by none other than the scallywag, Travis Loop. Blimey!! As a podcast host himself, the privateer (pirates who are sponsored by the government #fitting) took over as captain and made the duo walk the plank aka answer his questions. Note: this was recorded during a live happy hour–we suggest you listen with your favorite happy hour beverage as well. ARRR!! Top Takeaways: We break down ‘who is who’… Rogue Water, a consulting company, and the H2duO is our nicknames “water girls” and “dynamic duo” combined. Our relationship works because we’re very yin-yang, we learn from each other personally and professionally. Stephanie reached out to Erin Brockovich about changing the utility communication game. Ms. Brockovich responded… Embrace the haters. Let the haters fuel you. Charlotte View is proud to present Citizen Advocate for the Wrogfully Convicted, Joan Treppa. We are joining forces with this extraordinary woman to support the mission of the Voice of Innocence and the Innocence Project of Minnesota (and nationwide). The crucial element that makes her story so miraculous and fascinating is that Joan does not have a legal background but she still took up a cause via a specific wrongful conviction case from Green Bay, Wisconsin that she learned about through reading a book. In a span of close to six years, Joan played an integral part in initiating an eventual change in the outcome of this case by compelling a large law firm to file a 152-page motion on behalf of the lead suspect. There were six defendants originally and one of them has been exonerated but the other five are still in prison and had served twenty years. “I've finally come to the realization that my mission in life must be to provide a voice of hope for those who are forgotten as well as a voice of inspiration for all others to remember.” Joan Treppa Contact: about.me/JoanTreppa / jctreppa@gmail.com / Website: www.VoiceofInnocence.com About Us: Executive Producer, Broadcast Manager: Claudia Pureco / Show Presenter, IT: Daniel Pureco
