Send us a textA single gunshot in the darkness of a Dodge City night forever altered the course of Western history, claiming the life of beloved performer Dora Hand in a case of tragic mistaken identity. When James "Spike" Kenedy fired into Mayor James Kelly's home on October 4, 1878, he had no idea his vengeful bullets would strike the talented singer sleeping in the mayor's bed while he was away on business. What followed was one of the most remarkable manhunts of the Old West. An all-star posse of legendary lawmen—including Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and Charles Bassett—pursued Kenedy across rugged terrain and swollen rivers. Their dramatic confrontation and Kenedy's subsequent capture might have been the stuff of dime novels, but what happened next reveals the complex reality of frontier justice.Despite Kenedy's apparent admission and the overwhelming circumstantial evidence, this son of a wealthy cattle baron walked free when his father arrived in town with a satchel full of money. Dora Hand's funeral drew the entire town in mourning, yet justice remained elusive. Through firsthand accounts, newspaper reports, and historical records, we piece together this forgotten tragedy that embodied both the best and worst of the American frontier—where a woman known for her generosity and beautiful voice could be gunned down in her sleep, and where even the combined efforts of the West's most famous lawmen couldn't secure justice against the power of wealth and influence.Listen now to discover this captivating story that brings together celebrity, violence, pursuit, and the fascinating contradictions of Western justice. If you enjoy tales where history's footnotes reveal profound truths about the American experience, subscribe to our podcast and leave a review to help others find these forgotten stories of the Wild West. Don't miss out on the excitement—tune in and explore the stories of "This Week in the West" by clicking on the link "This Week in the West." If you want to own one or more of the beautifully illustrated dime novel publications, click Order Now.Support the show

Title: Understanding the Person of the Holy Spirit Series: Living in the Spirit
Focus Scripture: Acts 2 Introduction * Acts 2 marks the fulfillment of Jesus' promise to send the Holy Spirit, empowering believers for ministry and revealing the person and work of the Spirit profoundly. This chapter serves as a foundation for understanding the Holy Spirit's role in the life of the church and the believer. * Objective:
To explore the Holy Spirit's identity, nature, and mission as revealed in Acts 2 and how this understanding transforms our daily walk with God. I. The Identity of the Holy Spirit 1. The Holy Spirit as God:     * Acts 2:4: "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit..."
The Spirit's divine nature is evident in His ability to fill believers and empower them with supernatural gifts.     * The gifts of the Holy Spirit are an extension of the person of the Holy Spirit present within us.     * The Holy Spirit is not a force but a person of the Trinity with intellect, will, and emotions - 2. The Promise of the Father:     * Acts 2:33 33 Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God's right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today.     * The Spirit fulfills the Old Testament promises     * (Joel 2:28-29) - 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn't looking for him and doesn't recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. II. The Work of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 1. Empowering Believers:     * Acts 2:3-4: 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.     * The gift of diverse tongues and interpretation manifested because people of many nations/languages were gathered.     * Application: The Spirit equips us for ministry and mission, giving gifts for service (1 Corinthians 12). 2. Revealing God's Glory:     * Acts 2:11: "We hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!"     * The Spirit's work is always centered on glorifying God and revealing His nature to the world. 3. Convicting and Drawing People to Christ:     * Acts 2:37:  Peter's words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”     * The Spirit convicts hearts, leading people to repentance and faith (John 16:8). 4. Building Unity in the Church:     * Acts 2:44-47: 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord's Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity[a]— 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.     * The Spirit creates a community of believers through generosity, worship, and fellowship.     * The Spirit binds believers together in one body (Ephesians 4:3) -  Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. III. Living in the Spirit Today 1. Continual Filling:     * The Spirit's presence in Acts 2 wasn't a one-time event but the beginning of ongoing empowerment (Ephesians 5:18). 18 Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,     * Daily surrender and openness to the Spirit are essential. God's mercies are fresh and new every day. Like the children of Israel in the wilderness, we need fresh manna daily, 2. Boldness in Witnessing:     * Acts 2:14-41: Peter's boldness in proclaiming the Gospel came from the Spirit's power.     * Application: The Spirit emboldens us to share our faith in love and truth. 3. Transformation of Lives:     * Acts 2:42-47: 42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, and fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord's Supper[a]), and to prayer. 43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord's Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity[b]— 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day, the Lord added those who were being saved to their fellowship.     * The Spirit transforms believers, resulting in worship, generosity, and a communal lifestyle.     * Personal Reflection: How is the person of the Holy Spirit transforming our hearts, habits, and relationships? Conclusion * Call to Action:     * Let's reflect on our relationship with the Holy Spirit. Are we yielding to His leading, seeking His filling, and walking in His power?     * Let's pray for a fresh outpouring of the Spirit in our lives, just as in Acts 2. * Encouragement:     * The same Spirit who moved powerfully at Pentecost is alive and at work today. He longs to empower, guide, and transform each of us into the likeness of Christ.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Area residents Daniel Garcia and Joel Tijerina have been thinking about doing business with the state government for some time.In particular, they would to sell their services and/or products to one of the Lone Star State's biggest buyers of goods and services but don't know how to go about. But this week, the two are among a group of 20 people attending a Business in Development Academy hosted by the Prairie View A&M University Cooperative Extension Service, held at the eBridge Center for Business and Commercialization in downtown Brownsville. The academy is an eight-day course to prepare the participants to be certified in what is known as Historically Underutilized Businesses to do contracts with the government.A HUB applies to person who owns at least 51 percent of a businesses and is economically disadvantaged and/or is a member of minority group, including Asian, Black, Hispanic and Native American.Women and service-disabled veterans with a service-related disability of 20 percent also fall in this category. But to do business with the government each and every one of them must be HUB certified.“Anybody with a product or a service to sell to the state qualifies,” Megan Rodriguez, the academy instructor and extension agent for Willacy and Cameron Counties, said. “The State of Texas wants you to be certified by offering this free program.”But in order to that, each participant is required to miss no more than one class and pass a sort of test to graduate. The academy covers an array of topics such as procurement threshold, tips for completing a HUB application, and an applicant requirement and checklist review, among other things. In Texas and for HUB purposes, all the counties are divided into 25 geographical highway districts. This region of South Texas falls in District 21, which includes Brooks, Cameron, Jim Hogg, Kenedy, Starr, Willacy, and Zapata.Rodriguez said no one should include a county outside District 21 if he or she is not ready to take up a bigger responsibility. For Garcia, the academy could provide him a better understanding on how to do business with the state.“I am interested in the starting a drone-type of operation,” he said, “to work in agriculture.”Tijerina, founder of Brown Rock Builders LLC, would like to do likewise. After all, there is a lot of money to be made out there.According to data provided during the academy introductory session held Tuesday, Jan. 7, of the $25 billion the government spent on goods and services in 2024, $2.9 billion was spent with HUBs.Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

KENEDY COUNTY, Texas - The groundbreaking ceremony was held by the Texas Department of Transportation to celebrate the start of a $191 million project to get US 77 up to interstate standards near the Willacy-Kenedy County line. Another $173 million will be spent by TxDOT on a similar project further north in Kenedy County.“The projects, in general, in Kenedy County will have overpasses every five miles or so to allow turnarounds for emergency vehicles and to provide access to major ranches in the area,” said Pete Alvarez, TxDOT's Pharr District Engineer. “Both of these projects have two lanes in each direction with shoulders, and in the future, they will have two-lane main lanes in each direction. We're adding overpasses, and we're adding frontage roads to the major ranch entrances.”Among the speakers at the groundbreaking ceremony were Alvarez, Alliance for I-69 Texas Executive Director Jennifer Shepard, state Sen. Morgan LaMantia, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn's district director for South Texas, Anna Garcia, Kenedy County Judge Charles Burns, Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr., Harlingen Mayor Norma Sepulveda, and Cameron County Commissioner David Garza. Here is an audio recording of the event.  Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

Welcome back! We're glad you're here for our Season 12 wrap party! As with previous wrap parties, our hosts spend the episode discussing what they knew about Sarita Kenedy East prior to recording (almost nothing!) and what they most enjoyed about the season. In addition to sharing their enjoyment of seasons set in the Wild West, our hosts discuss how impressed they are with Sarita's loyalty and courage. They also (again!) share their dismay at how many wealthy philanthropists die without having their affairs in order. These holy donors clearly want to improve the world with their wealth, yet their lack of ONE legal almost destroys their legacy. Long story short, if you're listening to this podcast and you don't yet have a will, get working on it!We close by announcing the featured donor for our next season - John Mullanphy. In 1981, twenty years after Sarita's death, we finally get resolution to Sarita Kenedy East's will drama. Brother Leo's final appeal is rejected, and Sarita's estate can finally be settled. This 1981 court decision confirms the 1964 settlement, and it seems to uphold Sarita's wishes. The Oblate fathers receive the ranch headquarters, and Sarita's estate is finally able to fund the foundation that she started the year before she passed, the John G and Stella Marie Kenedy Memorial Foundation. The Kenedy Memorial Foundation still exists today, and it continues to honor Sarita's legacy by funding primarily Catholic organizations and dioceses. To close this episode, our hosts share their thoughts on whether or not Sarita Kenedy East meets their standards for the title of holy donor. As is always the case, our hosts judge Sarita on her humility, faithfulness, and radical generosity; and after having tuned in for all the episodes of this season, it's unlikely that any listener will be surprised by their verdict! ---Recommended reading: "If You Love Me, You Will Do My Will" by Stephen Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth ---Holy Donors is brought to you by Petrus Development (petrusdevelopment.com) in cooperation with RED-C Catholic Radio (redcradio.org).For more about Holy Donors please visit our website at holydonors.com or find us @HolyDonors on Instagram and Facebook.Holy Donors: Bringing you inspiring stories of radical generosity that have changed the world.

This episode is quite the adventure! We return to our telling of Sarita Kenedy East's philanthropic legacy just after her death, and we learn that Sarita's problem is not the lack of a will. Instead, it's the opposite. Sarita has 2 wills, and the presence of multiple wills leads to nearly 20 years of court battles and frozen assets. Written in 1948, Sarita's first will leaves the bulk of her inheritance to the Diocese of Corpus Christi and the Oblate Fathers, but it also gives some small portions of wealth to family members. In the last decade of Sarita's life, however, she meets and befriends a Trappist monk named Brother Leo. Sarita and Brother Leo forge a close friendship, and they travel the Americas and make plans to use Sarita's wealth to fund Brother Leo's missions. Sarita writes a new will in 1960, less than a year before her death, and she leaves all of her money to a foundation started by her, Brother Leo, and another friend, Peter Grace. Needless to say, the beneficiaries of the 1948 will are displeased with the 1960 will, and they try to find ways to invalidate the later will. For nearly 2 decades, potential beneficiaries of both of Sarita's wills try to stake their claims to the inheritance through court cases and appeals. Which side will prevail? ---Recommended reading: "If You Love Me, You Will Do My Will" by Stephen Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth ---Holy Donors is brought to you by Petrus Development (petrusdevelopment.com) in cooperation with RED-C Catholic Radio (redcradio.org).For more about Holy Donors please visit our website at holydonors.com or find us @HolyDonors on Instagram and Facebook.Holy Donors: Bringing you inspiring stories of radical generosity that have changed the world.

We return to our journey through Sarita Kenedy East's life just as her grandfather, Mifflin Kenedy, passes away, in true Holy Donors fashion, without a will. Sarita's father manages to buy out his siblings and become owner of the family ranch, La Parra. Sarita grows up on La Parra, and this episode focuses on her life on the ranch and her philanthropic efforts both on and off the ranch. As an adult, Sarita is a proud Texas rancher. She successfully manages La Parra and its community of employees. Sarita is a very generous leader, and she cares for her employees and their families well by offering housing, medical care, food, and supplies, etc. Off the ranch, Sarita offers financial support to Catholic organizations around Texas. Sarita helps to fund churches, hospitals, and schools, and she remains humble in her giving. She often refuses recognition and praise for her philanthropy. Sarita passes away in 1961, over a decade after her husband and closest family members pass, and though she dies with a will, it's not without its challenges. Our hosts close this episode by teasing the drama that is to come for Sarita's estate and philanthropic legacy after her death, and they promise a wild ride for the 3rd episode in Sarita's season. Captain Mifflin is a steamboat captain, an astute businessman, and an empire builder; and he is the focus of this episode as our hosts set the stage for the times in which Sarita Kenedy lived and the family that surrounded her. Though all agree Dora Hand was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was not Spike's intended target, there is some disagreement as to why mayor James “Dog” Kelley was Spike's target. Some speculate that Spike tried to kill Dog because Dog was his rival in love with Dora. That would have been more than ironic – ending up killing the object of his adoration rather than winning her. For whatever reason, there was bad blood between Kenedy and Kelley. Things got out of hand in the summer of 1878 when Dog threw Spike out of his saloon. Spike vowed to bring vengeance upon Dog. “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.” Matthew 25:35   Kathleen Tong joins us on the podcast today to tell us about how she has been using the method of The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in her work in Prison Ministry and the response she has witnessed in our brothers and sisters that she serves there.   Kathleen began her work in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in 2003. She serves as a catechist at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Boerne, Texas and most recently was in the Level III atrium. She is a member of the 2014 CGS-MAPS Cohort at the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis. She currently serves as a Certified Volunteer Chaplain's Assistant (CVCA) for the Texas Department of Corrections Connally Unit in Kenedy, Texas. Kathleen was invited to introduce Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to offenders of the Catholic community who facilitate RCIA in 2019. Additionally, she serves as Secretary and director on the board of Kolbe Prison Ministries and is a member of the San Antonio Kolbe CORE team. She is also the mom of a 22 year old daughter, Hannah Rose, who grew up a child of the atrium.   In The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, we have 32 Points of Reflection that are intended to represent the principal aspects of the catechesis as they have developed after more than sixty five years of work with children of different countries, cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. Kathleen's work of using CGS in her prison ministry work is a great example of characteristic #26 in action:   The primary commitment of the catechist is working with the children in the atrium; however, this commitment also leads the catechist to be open to the needs of the catechesis in general and making him/her responsive to other forms of service which can be necessary.   There is a Summer Catechist Study Day coming up on August 16th from 7-9pm ET.  This is for CGSUSA members.  This is an opportunity to hear some thoughts on Sustaining the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in a Parish Setting from CGSUSA national director, Mary Mirrione who also has 19 years serving as director of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in a large parish in Gilbert, AZ.  You can register HERE    Learn more about the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd at www.cgsusa.org   Follow us on Social Media- Facebook at “The United States Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd” Instagram-  cgsusa Twitter- @cgsusa Pinterest- Natl Assoc of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd USA YouTube- oneofhisheep
