Martial Artist and Hollywood action star Jeff Speakman joins Brad to share his journey from the cold winters of Chicago as a springboard diver and gymnast, working with legendary martial artists Lou Angel and Ed Parker, adapting Kenpo to grappling, what it was like to work with the legendary Ed Parker on the set of The Perfect Weapon, surviving stage 4 throat cancer, and much much more... Jeff shares his beliefs on America's decline, and preparing the next generation of martial artists. If you are a martial artist, this is an exciting interview with a martial arts legend, who didn't let Hollywood seduce him, carrying on the legacy of Ed Parker. Brad also shares his journey in Kempo Jujitsu. This is a fun episode. About Jeff Speakman: Jeff Speakman is best known from his martial arts films The Perfect Weapon, Street Knight, The Expert and Land of The Free. Jeff started his athletic career very early in life. Training and competing as a gymnast during the school year and as a springboard diver in the summer consumed much of his young life. He has earned black belts in American kenpo karate and Japanese Goju-Ryu. As one of the last students of the Grand Master of Kenpo, Ed Parker, Jeff Speakman has carved out his own niche with the art, adapting Kenpo to modern fighting styles by adding grappling to the mix. As he stated "taking Kenpo to the ground was no easy task...but we did it." He calls this next level Kenpo 5.0. Jeff has been inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame, the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame and the Masters Hall of Fame with over 50 Kenpo 5.0 dojos (training centers), in over 20 countries. Jeff and his wife Kim reside in Las Vegas. Host: Brad Szollose --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/awakenednation/support

“If you can embrace chaos and change, you can get greater focus, efficiency, and become more creative, because you have to figure out how to maneuver and get around the change, so you can take the negative and turn it into a positive. “ – George ChungMy guest this episode is George Chung, who is a Martial Artist, Businessman, Actor, Director and TV Show Producer. He is currently the CEO of JungoTV and the creator of the Black Belt + App which is the world's most complete platform for martial arts, it includes training videos, classic martial arts movies, and Black Belt Magazine issues digitally remastered and available for your phones and tablets. Master Chung is a member of the Black Belt Hall of Fame, a 5 Time world Karate Champion, former coach of the San Francisco 49ers, and an original member of Grand Master Ernie Reye's Famous West Coast Demo Team. This episode is all about embracing change and falling in love with martial arts. We dive deep into the creation of success in our personal and professional lives. My key takeaway is that if we can embrace change and chaos we can continue to grow and create. People have difficulty dealing with change, because change creates uncertainty, and this leads to stress, fear, and anxiety. Instead if we can embrace change, and learn to maneuver around it, we can then find the opportunity inside of chaos. What I appreciate about Master Chung is his ability to understand himself, his teams, and his students. He leads by example and fosters growth and creation by encouraging his students and teams to be explorers and discovers of truth. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, and you like me will feel the love and passion for martial arts coming from his entire being.

Melissa Soalt is a women's self-defense pioneer, a Black Belt Hall of Fame recipient, former trauma psychotherapist, and the creator of Fierce & Female Self Defense. She is a forerunner in full-force padded assailant scenario training, her approach is both practical and transformational. She has taught thousands of women how to safeguard their boundaries, protect themselves from danger and resist attack while reconnecting women with deep-seated, primal and emotional powers to live safer, bolder, and fuller lives and to reverse female fear. Melissa is an outspoken advocate for self-defense as physical feminism, she has been featured in national and international media and has also taught in Europe, India, Nepal, and Kenya. She provides customized online training and corporate consulting and is at work on a manifesto for women. In this episode, Melissa and I discuss: The journey from innocence to awakening into aggression and survival Fighting back against violent attempts from people who won't take no for an answer Our power and potential as part of our original, primordial nature. The reversal of horrific oppressive culture Key Takeaways: Don't silence yourself nor let yourself be silenced. Your body is an instrument of power. Your body, as a tool, can be dangerous to oppressors. We have to be able to make room in our hearts for the capacity for aggressive force, that's the first step to fighting back. You can still be caring and loving, but at the same time be fierce and indomitable. The reversal for the oppressor's perceived right to take is our right to take control, to embrace power and defend ourselves. "Speak up and take action if something doesn't feel right. Free yourself from fears that inhibit you…" — Melissa Soalt Connect with Melissa Soalt: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fierceandfemale/ Website: http://www.dr-ruthless.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-soalt-aka-dr-ruthless-a457456/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTwPfQoC4d7TTj6KPoR1J5w CONNECT WITH CYNTHIA: If you'd like to chat with Cynthia, sign up for your Personal Safety Preparedness Consultation with her today! Sometimes the need to attack is inevitable. When obstacles bring imminent danger, as Tim Larkin has taught for more than two decades, violence is the answer. Tim is a former military intelligence officer, a Black Belt Hall of Fame inductee, and is America's leading Pro-Victim Rights and Personal Safety Advocate. The principles he uses when training civilians and law enforcement in life-or-death combat are the same principles that guide his successful self-protection business. In this episode, he joins Vince to unpack how self-protection philosophies can help you take your business to the next level, including why you need to be willing to strike back and how to level the playing field by knowing where to throw your weight. You'll learn how to drop the victim mentality and run toward fear while training your brain to think from a place of victory. “If the foundation is flawed, everything else is going to fall apart. STEPHEN K. HAYES –NinjutsuIn the 1970's Mr. Stephen Hayes traveled to japan to seek out Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi Sensei, the grandmaster of the ninjutsu fighting art.Without even correspondence from Hatsumi Sensei Mr. Stephen Hayes accomplished the seemingly impossible for a westerner at the time – he began studying the art of the ninja. After several decades of training Mr. Stephen Hayes brought back the teachings of Hatsumi Sensei and opened his own schools to spread awareness of one of the most esoteric fighting styles known to man.Black Belt magazine regards Mr. Stephen Hayes as "A Legend; one of the most infuential martial arts masters alive in the world today" In the late 1980's Mr. Hayes serendipitously began serving as the head of the protection detail to his holiness the Dalai Lama.In this episode we cover Mr. Hayes' story, his adventure through Japan and how he has changed the face of martial arts in the west forever. The Ninja:A ninja (忍者?) or shinobi (忍び?) was a covert agent or mercenary in feudal Japan. The functions of the ninja included espionage, sabotage, infiltration, and assassination, and open combat in certain situations. Their covert methods of waging war contrasted the ninja with the samurai, who observed strict rules about honor and combat. The shinobi proper, a specially trained group of spies and mercenaries, appeared in the Sengoku or "warring states" period, in the 15th century, but antecedents may have existed in the 14th century, and possibly even in the 12th century (Heian or early Kamakura era).In the unrest of the Sengoku period (15th–17th centuries), mercenaries and spies for hire became active in the Iga Province and the adjacent area around the village of Kōga, and it is from the area's clans that much of our knowledge of the ninja is drawn. Following the unification of Japan under the Tokugawa shogunate (17th century), the ninja faded into obscurity. A number of shinobi manuals, often centered on Chinese military philosophy, were written in the 17th and 18th centuries, most notably the Bansenshukai (1676).The Bujinkan:The Bujinkan (武神館) is an international martial arts organization based in Japan and headed by Masaaki Hatsumi. The combat system taught by this organization comprises nine separate ryūha, or schools, which are collectively referred to as Bujinkan Budō Taijutsu. The Bujinkan is most commonly associated with ninjutsu. However, Masaaki Hatsumi uses the term Budo (meaning martial way) as he says the ryūha are descended from historical samurai schools that teach samurai martial tactics and ninjutsu schools that teach ninja tactics.Toshindo:To-Shin Do is a martial art founded by Black Belt Hall of Fame instructor Stephen K. Hayes in 1997. It is a modernized version of ninjutsu, and differs from the traditional form taught by Masaaki Hatsumi's Bujinkan organization. Instruction focuses on threats found in contemporary western society. In addition to hand-to-hand combat skills, students are exposed to: methods for survival in hostile environments, security protection for dignitaries, how to instruct classes and run a school, classical Japanese weapons, meditation mind science, and health restoration yoga. The headquarters school (hombu) is located in Dayton, Ohio, USA.
