Mike McPhail's love of the science fiction genre sparked a life-long interest in science, technology, and developing an understanding of the human condition—all of which played an important role in his writing, art, and game design. These, in turn, are built upon his background in Applied Science and training as an Aeronautical Engineer, all of which were aimed at becoming a NASA mission specialist. As a professional author, he has been involved in numerous projects, but he is best known as the creator and series editor of the award-winning Defending the Future military science fiction anthologies—now in their second decade of publication. His body of work has been formally recognized with his acceptance into SFWA, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. As a graphic designer, he is the owner of McP Digital Graphics (founded in 2006), a company established to provide cover art, design, layout, and prepress services. As a publisher, he is the co-owner of eSpec Books LLC (since 2014), where his graphics company has become the inhouse design arm of production. As Airman McPhail, he is a member of the Military Writers Society of America and is dedicated to helping his fellow service members (and those deserving civilians) in their efforts to become authors, editors, or artist, as well as supporting related organization in their efforts to help those "who have given their all for us." On June 19, 1864, a fourteen-month chase culminated in one of the most dramatic naval battles in history. The dreaded Confederate raider Alabama faced the Union warship Kearsarge in an all-or-nothing fight to the death, and the outcome would effectively end the threat of the Confederacy on the high seas. Award-winning and bestselling historians Phil Keith (who was a US Navy Captain) and Tom Clavin share this riveting, mostly untold, story in To the Uttermost Ends of the Earth: The Epic Hunt for the South's Most Feared Ship―and the Greatest Sea Battle of the Civil War (Hanover Square Press). Informed by comprehensive research, extensive photos, maps, and the authors' expertise, the book is a fresh blend of military, naval, and Civil War history. The authors' last book, All Blood Runs Red, was a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice, and praised by the Christian Science Monitor, Booklist, and more, and the pair are known for gripping yet substantiative narratives. In To the Uttermost Ends of the Earth, Keith and Clavin introduce some of the crucial but historically overlooked Civil War players, including John Winslow, captain of the USS Kearsarge, as well as Raphael Semmes, captain of the CSS Alabama. Readers will sail aboard the Kearsarge as Winslow embarks for Europe with a set of simple orders from the secretary of the navy: "Travel to the uttermost ends of the earth, if necessary, to find and destroy the Alabama." Winslow pursued Semmes in a spectacular fourteen-month chase over international waters, culminating in what would become the climactic sea battle of the Civil War. Today: The Confederate raider currently lies in French territorial waters and is the focus of a transcontinental salvage effort to raise funds for dives at the site, the recovery of artifacts, and more historical research. While parts of it have been brought up, most of the ship still lies on the ocean floor. Most Civil War narratives focus on the battles fought on land, but To the Uttermost Ends of the Earth is a riveting, deep dive into the greatest sea battle of the war. ABOUT THE AUTHORS Phil Keith (1946-2021) was the author of six books, including Blackhorse Riders, which won the 2012 award from USA Book News for Best Military Non-Fiction, was a finalist for the 2013 Colby Award, and earned a 2013 silver medal from Military Writers Society of America. He held a degree in history from Harvard and was a former Navy aviator. During three tours in Vietnam, he served with distinction and was awarded, among other decorations, the Purple Heart, Air Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and the Navy Commendation Medal. Tom Clavin is the author of eighteen nonfiction books and has worked as a newspaper editor, magazine writer, TV and radio commentator, and reporter for The New York Times covering a variety of topics. His two most recent books, Blood and Treasure: Daniel Boone and the Fight for America's First Frontier (with Bob Drury) and Lightning Down: A World War II Story of Survival, were national bestsellers. Other bestselling titles include Dodge City, The Heart of Everything That Is, Tombstone, and The Last Stand of Fox Company. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

When Sarajane Giere was asked by Tom Dutta why her story fits the hero's journey narrative, she wrote this:  "...it's also my story and the journey of our 52 years of marriage. I've learned how my grief has turned to joy in the writing, how my pilot and I sacrificed for the sake of our marriage instead of each other, and lastly, how my gratitude grows and sustains me each day as I go forward." Giere offers a uniquely intimate glimpse into the life of a military wife as she tells the story of her fighter pilot husband, Bernie, a Vietnam Veteran who flew 214 combat missions in the war. With soaring love and explicit honesty, she recounts the terror of the Vietnam years and the lifelong sacrifices that affected her pilot's life and death. Giere, a spunky military wife with a keen knack for storytelling, recounts her fighter pilot's eventful Vietnam years through his handwritten letters and moving personal accounts. The harrowing shoot-down in enemy territory, the joy upon learning he had a son, and the loneliness of separation are among the many subjects covered. All the while, Sarajane worked with a local police detective to uncover evidence that brought one of her neighbors to justice. With a knack for detail, she recounts the uncertain years with Pan Am and her husband Bernie's missions with the NY Air National Guard's world-class 106th Rescue and Recovery Wing for 25 years. The love that brought this intrepid couple together during their college years can be felt through the words on every page. Their bond remained strong for 52 years, helping them grasp the courage they needed upon learning of Bernie's ALS diagnosis later in life. In telling their story, she honors her family, which includes the military community and the nation that she holds dear to her heart.   Author Giere's latest book, My Pilot A Story of War, Love and ALS, wraps the entire interview into a spectacular finish.   My Pilot has won three literary awards: The Independent Press Award, The Military Writers Society of America's Silver Medal Award, and the NYC Big Book Award.

TERRY GOULD WRITES ABOUT FELLOW SOLDIERS AND PURPLE HEARTS Like the Afghan war today and the ten-year-war in Iraq, the Vietnam War tore at the bodies and souls of those who served, particularly the nearly 1,100 Americans who lost multiple limbs and returned home from Vietnam to face a different kind of battle: acceptance. In this riveting first novel, winner of the Military Writers Society of America 2010 Silver Medal Award, author T.L. Gould draws upon his experience recovering in a military hospital to create a plain truth, no-holds-barred narrative, stark in its simplicity, detail and humor. From dressing changes and morphine drips to off-site forays under a fence and into neighborhood bars and brothels, Gould chronicles the precipitous journey to recovery of the men of Ward 2B; how they learned to walk again,to love again, and to triumph over the most impossible odds. Home | Mend This Purple Heart (howcanyoumendthispurpleheart.com) “BETWEEN THE LINES” Dwight Jon Zimmerman is a frequent contributor and guest on Veterans Radio. The Irish-born Father Donahey has retired from many years of service as a Catholic priest in South American countries to Winterset, Iowa. It's not to be the life of books and long rural walks that he expects. The community and the surrounding area are awash with supernatural creatures. Some are friendly, some not, but all must be dealt with in order to protect his new parish, state, country, and the wider world from chaos and destruction. Dennis Maulsby's poems and short stories have appeared in The North American Review, Mainstreet Rag, The Hawai'i Pacific Review, The Briarcliff Review (Pushcart nomination), and on National Public Radio's Themes & Variations. In 2015, poor control of my diabetes left me legally blind for the better part of a year. The doctors predicted an 80% chance I would never see again, but I changed the way I was living and through sheer willpower beat the odds. During this time I couldn't read or write. Two things that I had been turning to for comfort since I was a small child. With the sheer amount of stress I was under, this was devastating. My wife took me by the arm, lead me into the local library, and read out titles of audiobooks to me. I chose the audiobook versions of books I had loved such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter and more. They brought my favorite stories to life in ways I never thought possible and helped me through the darkest time of my life. Once my vision recovered, I maintained a love for audiobooks. I decided I would turn my focus from being a writer to becoming a narrator. Nancy Panko has achieved amazing success with her book, “Guiding Missal,” an unusual story about a prayer book that is carried in the pocket of three generations of men as they navigate war. As she held the Military Missal in her hands, Nancy thought, “If only this little book could talk.” Her novel gives the prayer book a voice. Based on actual events, Nancy’s award winning novel is partially narrated by the small Catholic prayer book that George Panko received as he prepared to deploy to the European theater during World War II. A baker turned infantry man/forward scout, Panko left behind his wife, Gladys, and small son, Butch, for several years as he navigated France and Germany, helping the United States and its Allies win significant skirmishes, including the Battle of the Bulge. Throughout his enlistment, George carried the small book in his pocket and read from it, memorizing passages and whispering prayers. Once safely home, George packed the military missal into a trunk and together he and his wife rear their family. Fifteen years later, his son Butch is ready to graduate from high school and wants to enter the Air Force. George hands him the military missal with a request that he bring it back home, safe and sound. Butch’s experiences while stationed in Germany aren’t always as harrowing as George’s, thanks to George’s efforts as a U.S. Soldier. Still, Butch does live through the Cold War and high-alert situations where ballistic missile launches were potentially moments away, from the Berlin Crisis of 1961 to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Along the way, Butch travels to Italy and gains an audience with St John XXIII, who lifts the prayer book out of Butch's hand and blesses it. At the end of his enlistment, Butch comes home and returns the missal to George. Back into the trunk the book goes. Butch marries Nancy, the love of his life, and they have two children. The couple move to Clinton County, where George enjoys a long career with Woolrich. Nancy began taking general education classes at Lock Haven University, transferring to Lycoming College to begin her nursing education at Williamsport Hospital. She graduated and began her career at Jersey Shore Hospital as a pediatric nurse for one year before working for Geisinger Medical Group in Lock Haven also in pediatrics. She was employed at Glennon Health Services of Lock Haven University for thirteen years before her retirement. Two decades pass and their daughter, Margie, meets and marries T.O., a U.S. Soldier deploying to Africa to combat Al Qaeda in Mogadishu, Somalia. Once again, the military missal’s amazing powers of protection are required. Butch searches for the missal in his late father’s belongings and loans it to his new son-in-law, T.O., with the same request his own father had: Come home safe and return the book. T.O. returns the book, convinced of its power after a U.S. Blackhawk helicopter goes down in 1993, and the resultant battle between forces of the United States and Somali militia fighters. “Guiding Missal” is a heartfelt, homespun tale that has moved people to leave more than two dozen five-star reviews on Amazon.  Nancy’s simple, sweet story has touched so many people it’s become a successful book in both print and digital platforms. Published by Torchflame Books, a hybrid publisher, “Guiding Missal” received the 2017 Silver Award-Medal for Historical Fiction from the Military Writers’ Society of America. Nancy is a ten-time contributor to “Chicken Soup for the Soul” and “Guideposts” magazines. She is a member of the Cary Senior Writing Circle, The Light of Carolina Christian Writers’ Group, and The Military Writers’ Society of America. She and her husband moved from Lock Haven, Pennsylvania to North Carolina in 2009. They have two children and four grandchildren. They love being in, on, or near the water with their family.

The Total Tutor will interview Saul Silas Fathi. We will discuss the education system in Irag and his family life. He was born into a well-to-do Jewish family in Baghdad in 1938. Two former prime ministers lived on the same street and it was an “idyllic” place, he recalls. That ended for the country's Jewish population in the late 1940s when the creation of Israel set off a wave of anti-Jewish sentiment. As a young boy, Saul witnessed public executions and his family was falsely accused of treason against the Iraqi government. Like all wealthy Jews, his family was labeled Zionist and Communist. When he was 10, he and his younger brother were smuggled out of Baghdad through Iran and eventually landed in Israel. In 1958, Saul worked his way to Brazil, where he nearly starved. Two years later, he came to the U.S. and joined the Army for three years. In Israel, Saul had studied aeronautics and in the Army was assigned to the 15th Aviation Company, the famed helicopter division in the Vietnam War. Back in the U.S. he earned a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Virginia and went on to found three high-tech companies over a 20-year period. Saul retired in 2003 to write his memoir, Full Circle: Escape from Baghdad and the return (Xlibris 2006). A review by the president of Military Writers Society of America, stated that Saul's autobiography “takes the reader to places and events that one may only get to know about from small glimpses on The History Channel or in some old National Geographic Magazines. This guy has lived a life that would make a great movie.” Saul's second book, published in March, 2006 is History of the Jews and Israel – 4000 years of history condensed into 76 pages. He is fluent in English, Hebrew, Arabic and Portuguese.
