By any means necessary. When the resurgent Sinaloa cartel attacks Wolf and his wife, Elle Parker, on the Crow Indian reservation, the safety of his people becomes Job One—until the president of the United States orders Shadow Tier to stop the Taliban's opium trade. The president's underlying message: The drug war is a failure. Fix this now, or your black funding disappears. Torn between saving his people and the president's demands for direct action, Wolf sends Shadow Tier's Bravo Squadron to Afghanistan to infiltrate the Taliban drug organization. He sends Kieran Kennedy, his executive officer, to stand up and train a new international Charlie Squadron in the U.K. While Wolf bends the rules to protect the reservation on the home front, the squadrons track opium with a mysterious United Nations connection out of Afghanistan to a new “French Connection” in Marseilles, France. The teams identify a likely distribution hub and its leadership. But going deeper will take initiative and innovation. Kennedy takes the dangerous decision to operate in the open … as a drug cartel. The operation yields results, but there is a piece missing. Parker and Kennedy believe a government contractor providing logistics flights into and out of the war zones is involved. Plans are made by the fake cartel for a large shipment of heroin to go to the mafia in New York City, where wholesale arrests will be made if all goes as planned. As the data pours in from three continents, the heroin network unfolds and things to do not go as planned. The takedown of a multi-national drug production, shipment, and sales operation is unlike any operation Shadow Tier has attempted. For the president, it's a no-fail mission or his administration is doomed. For Shadow Tier, it's time to bring the war back into the war on drugs. Shadow Tier author Steve Snyder served in the White House Communications Office, worked with the Secret Service and earned his Green Beret.  Much of that experience is reflected in the pages of his first published book. While in Army basic training at Fort Ord, a group of men wearing suits and sporting non-regulation hair addressed his class asking for volunteers for a special assignment. Steve figured wearing suits sure beat crawling around in the mud. He would become a member of the White House Communications Agency. This is a multi-service unit that provides communications support for the White House staff both in Washington and around the world. His experience made for a natural transition to becoming a technical support member for the US Secret Service. One year he was on the road for 300 days.  Steve entered the private sector as a contractor and then decided to earn his Green Beret as a member of a National Guard Special Forces Unit. The Guard operates two Special Forces units – the 19th & 20th in Utah and Alabama. Much of his time in the Guard was spent conducting special training with Latin American Forces. This is the reason Steve made the characters in Shadow Tier members of the National Guard Special Forces. The antagonists in Shadow Tier are members of the Sinaloa drug cartel. The main protagonist is a Native American character named Lance Bearwolf.  Looking at the protagonists in other military thrillers, Steve decided a Native American character would provide a different take with that kind of cultural background. In his “day job”, Steve developed cyber security products that support the war fighter and intelligence communities. We spend some time discussing how the drug cartels are rapidly expanding into the use of cyber capability. Steve is currently working on two more books that will be a continuation of the Shadow Tier series.

This week, Carolyn is joined again by Bob Stevens, AVP Public Sector at GitLab, this time to talk about the power of hyperautomation. Listen in as Carolyn learns what can be gained through fast, accurate application security. Episode Table of Contents[00:32] What is Hyperautomation [09:02] What Has Changed in Hyperautomation Episode Links and Resources What is HyperautomationCarolyn: I'm excited to welcome back Bob Stevens, Area Vice President of Public Sector at GitLab. Bob is a seasoned veteran in public sector technology with over 36 years of experience. As the AVP at GitLab, he is responsible for helping government organizations become more productive, efficient, and effective. Bob has experience on both the industry and the government side of things. Prior to industry, he served in the United States Air Force as a computer specialist at the White House Communications Agency. Today, we are going to talk about artificial intelligence, machine learning, and what hyperautomation is exactly. Why Bob thinks it will be 2022's biggest trend. Bob, welcome back to Tech Transforms. Bob: I'm happy to be here. Thank you. Appreciate it. Carolyn: I'd like to talk about an episode that you just did with GovExec Daily. And on this episode, you mentioned that hyperautomation will be 2022's biggest trend. I'm going to be honest. I haven't really heard hyperautomation. And I get automation. I can deduce what hyperautomation is, but I would love for you to explain it to me. What's the difference between automation, hyperautomation, DevOps, all of that? Bob: Yes, I mean, it's the strict definition of the word. It's rapidly identifying, vetting in automated processes in order to produce whatever it is that you're working on as fast as you possibly can. And it trends today because if you think about the government space, they have a lot of compliance issues that they need to deal with. The Benefits of HyperautomationBob: If they can automate those compliance processes and ensure that when they build software, in the end it's going to be compliant and they don't have to go back and vet it. I mean, that's going to save them a world of time. Carolyn: Are you talking about missed compliances, automating some of those missed controls? There's 300 of them, I think. Bob: Yes, those. I think you're talking about FedRAMP. Carolyn: Yes. One of. Or authority to operate has all of those. Right? I mean, I don't know all the details. Bob: Yes, no. There's the STIGs. That the government has to put all software through and that's all about compliance. The government has to get the authority to operate, ATOs, for everything that they run. Carolyn: And renew them every two or three years. Bob: Or sooner. It depends on how much of a change occurred in the application. If you can hyperautomate all of that by the use of AI or machine learning. Again, and so by the time you produced that software, all those compliance issues are addressed. You know they're addressed because you've got confidence in the system and the way that it was done. It didn't require as little human intervention as possible, which is unfortunately, where some mistakes are injected. Then you've saved a world of time and you've made life really, really easy for the folks that are doing the development. As well as the folks that are using the applications in the end. Because they don't have to sit and wait to get the authority to operate, which sometimes can take a year. The Bad News: We Haven't Tried HyperautomationCarolyn: Is the differentiator between automation, DevOps, and hyperautomation really adding in, automating those compliances? And are you telling me that that hasn't happened before now? Bob: Unfortunately, it has not happened. I mean, that's evident by the fact that the government still has to produce ATOs and they still are doing STIGs at the end of the development cycle. Unfortunately, it hasn't happened. I think the government will embrace it and has...

Episode Table of Contents[00:27] DevSecOps' Speed of the Mission [09:02] The Cultural Shift That Needs to Occur to Upgrade the Speed of the Mission [19:21] The Future of DevOps Episode Links and Resources DevSecOps' Speed of the MissionCarolyn: This week Bob Stevens, Area Vice President of Public Sector at GitLab is joining me. Bob is a seasoned veteran in public sector technology with over 25 years of experience. As the AVP at GitLab, he is responsible for helping government organizations become more productive, efficient, and effective. Bob also has experience on both the industry and the government side of things. Prior to industry he served in the United States Air Force as a computer specialist at the White House Communications Agency. I am excited today to dive in and talk about the ways that we can use DevOps to modernize and secure government IT, and what the outlook for DevOps is. How are you doing, Bob? Bob: I'm doing great. The weather's getting better in DC, so it's good to see the sun from time to time versus what we've had. But yes, doing fantastic. Carolyn: Well, good to hear it. So let's just dive in. And let's walk through what DevOps is and why implementing these practices is critical to helping modernize and improve government IT? Bob: Great. So I guess DevOps is combining efficiency, speed, and security all into one. And creating software at what I like to refer to as the speed of the mission for the government. The business side is a little different. But for the government, it's all about the mission and you being able to accomplish the mission faster and stay ahead of our adversaries. In the case of DoD and on the civilian side, it's to ensure that all of the citizens that any given agency supports gets the best possible support that they can. If you look at the organizations like the Veterans Administration. You can imagine they've got a lot of applications that they've written. The Platform the Government Is Looking For to Improve the Speed of the MissionBob: To help the vets accomplish what they need to accomplish in a timely manner. So DevOps really will help them to produce the software at speed, more securely, more efficiently, and provide the most or the best service that they possibly can to all of the veterans out there, just as one example. Carolyn: So, you know Tech Transforms is vendor agnostic. And I would love for you to just take a couple of minutes and talk about how GitLab helps with that. And just what GitLab does. I've read the marketing statements and it's a little nebulous for me. I would love to have you explain what GitLab does and how it's helping agencies achieve this? Bob: I appreciate that you're letting me do this in a vendor-agnostic community. I mean, there are a lot of tools that are required to produce software. But the way that the industry or the government in particular is heading, and you can see this in some of the articles that DoD has recently released. Is they're looking for one platform that encompasses the entire software development life cycle. As you can imagine right now, I know agencies that have anywhere from 14 to 20 different tools that they're using. And the issue with that is that there's developers that like the tool that they like. So they bring their own and they develop their portion of the software. Unfortunately, when it all comes together, it doesn't always work because they've used different tools across the development organization. And so, with the use of a single platform, you can ensure that at the end, everything is going to work. The nice thing is you can continue to bring some of those other tools. Because they integrate...

Willing to hold himself to a higher standard not because he has to, but because he believes it's the right thing to do.  I had the privilege of working for Howie two separate times during my nine years of service, first when he was the Battalion Commander of the 112th Signal Battalion (Special Operations) (Airborne) and again when he commanded a Special Mission Unit that we both served in. In this episode, White House Communications Agency Hall of Famer, Darrell Williams, shares leadership insights gathered while working in the White House during the George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush administrations. The White House Communications Agency provides assured global information services to the President, Vice President, and others as directed, ensuring the White House is able to communicate with anyone, under any condition. Darrell Williams was determined to be one of the best to ever serve there. Listen in as Darrell talks about how in moments of crisis or great difficulty (like the aftermath of 9/11), your team members need to know that you care about them before you ask them to do anything. Once you have established your concern for their wellbeing, people will be ready to take on the toughest tasks. That's the “people always” part of the equation. Important missions bring stress. It's the nature of the job. In order to manage the stress, trust your training (i.e., Do what you've been trained to do in those situations), always plan for contingencies, and be willing to find out-of-the-box solutions. Take ownership of the issue and take initiative to find a solution.  When mistakes happen–and they inevitably will–empower people to take action and find a solution, make decisions, and move forward. The need to complete the mission does not change because something went wrong. If it's someone else's mistake, show grace when you can (i.e., don't seek to embarrass or make an example of the mistake) and make the experience an opportunity for them to learn. Highlight the learning and the creative solutions that were discovered.  Advice for success: Find a need (in your organization, family, community). Address the need using your talents and strengths. Repeat as long as there are needs in the world (you'll never run out of opportunities). You'll feel better about yourself, make a difference in people's lives, and learn along the way.  For more resources check out the links below!    Some of the big ideas from this episode include: Find a mentor – someone who has more experience than you do Seek out those who are at the top of their game Be eager to learn from the best Ask questions. Building and maintaining teams in an operational setting is a critical pillar for many entrepreneurs, but if you make a mistake in this arena, it can cause harm. Today’s guest shares how you avoid these mistakes and execute with precision. Robert “Bo” Brabo is a retired U.S. Army Chief of HR Operations with the White House Communications Agency and was the Presidential Communications Officer for both Presidents Bush and Obama. Bo has served in several executive positions including most recently Vice President of Human Resources at the National Spine & Pain Centers and Founder of Hail Media Group. When it comes to the power of execution and those who do it well and don’t do it well, it comes down to the empowerment of your team. Before you get to the “execution” phase, there is a ton of training and testing that goes behind the day of the event. This process can’t be skipped. When you have the complicated task of making sure the President is safe, there are too many variables for one person to handle. This is where trusting the training process and empowering your team come into play. If you tried to micromanage everything, things would not be ready by the time the President came into town. These critical tasks also mean that you don’t get a “do-over” when something isn’t working. How do you get things to just run seamlessly? You check in with your team frequently and make sure they know they can call upon you when there’s an unexpected problem at hand that needs to get resolved quickly. It’s about trusting and verifying the process.   Interview Links: Sponsored by: Sweetprocess.com Robertbrabo.com Bo on LinkedIn   Resources: Scaling Up Workshop: Interested in attending one of our workshops? Good morning, it's Thursday, March 18th and this is The Herald Review's podcast, the Daily Chirp. We're excited to bring you a closer look at top stories, events in the community, local history, sports, and more.    Today -  Legislators join groups promoting effort to decide future of wall   Before we begin, some local history.   In 1929 Nickolas George Ramus was born. Ramus was a Native American actor, best known for his appearances on television. He starred in the first Native American language film, 1980s Windwalker, and also appeared briefly in the film Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and in the comedy film Love at Stake as Chief Wannatoka.   Also, The Daily Chirp podcast is giving away 5 Amazon Echo Dots - one every month now through July. You can enter for your chance to win twice a day! Today's code is DUNK, and find the other codeword in our e-newsletter “The Morning Blend”. To enter the sweepstakes go to myheraldreview.com, again today's codeword is: DUNK.   Now, our feature story.    With the end of the moratorium to stop construction of the border wall, former U.S. officials and environmental and community activists want to know what Biden and the new Director of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas have in mind.   Arizona Reps. Raúl M. Grijalva and Anne Kirkpatrick along with six other U.S. representatives sent a letter to Biden applauding his decision to shut down construction.   The letter stated “We urge you to meaningfully consult with border communities that have been impacted by the construction, including tribal members, and stakeholders. We ask that the DHS develop a meaningful environmental mitigation plan for the borderlands with local stakeholders,”    They also asked Biden to cancel all construction contracts and not initiate any more construction activities. Instead, they request remaining funds be diverted to mitigate harms from the wall - like the destructive environmental damage and destruction of sacred sites.   They point out the Trump administration which used executive privilege 29 times to waive 84 federal environmental, historical and cultural laws and countless state and local laws.    Local and tribal communities had no say when the decision to build a wall along the southern border was made.    The letter ends by stating that “Urgent action is necessary to address the damage”   More details could come this week, so check in with us at myheraldreview.com for the latest updates. Thanks for listening, before we continue, a quick message from our sponsors, Prestige Family Living.    Next, we'd like to highlight a community update.   Brought to you by ApexNetwork Physical Therapy. Voted Best of Cochise County 2020, ApexNetwork provides exceptional care to the Sierra Vista and Benson communities. Choose ApexNetwork for all of your physical therapy needs. To learn more, go to ApexNetworkPT.com. A small shopping center, long a fixture in the city's West End, is no more.   Crews reduced the four spaces at Fry Boulevard and Fab Avenue which once included a beloved barber shop and a bookstore to rubble.   The city of Sierra Vista purchased the property — referred to as the “little red shopping center” and an adjacent vacant lot last fall for $230,000. City planners are hoping the area will be an extension of Sierra Vista's West End revitalization.   Next, an upcoming event in our community that you should know about  -- brought to you by our sponsors, Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative.   This morning, head over to the Sierra Vista Farmers Market! It starts at 10am, and if you can't make it today don't worry - stop by on any Thursday all year long. Leo was born on September 11, 1937 in Houghton Lake Heights, Michigan.   Leo is a veteran of Vietnam, and retired after a 30 year career in the Army. For six years he was selected to serve in the White House Communications Agency providing communications for the President and Vice President of the United States. After his military retirement, he spent six years with the Defense Information Systems Agency at Fort Huachuca.   He was active in the local flying community as a private pilot and FAA certificated A&P Mechanic. Leo loved flying with the Young Eagles and giving his time to help foster interest in general aviation. As an officer in the EAA Chapter 776, he also served as the technical advisor to Homebuilt Aircraft builders.   Leo enjoyed spending time with his Friday Lunch Bunch talking about aviation.   Leo accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior while in Vietnam and continued his growth in the Body of Christ throughout his life. Great value-based high performing leaders lead: ·     Lead up ·     Lead sideways ·     Lead down The best leaders empower junior leaders to take control, take charge and run their departments. They give their underlings and authority to run with ideas, tasks, running their department - give them purpose. They take care of their people, their families, the whole person concept, truly caring, individual approach. To achieve high performance in your company, you need to know about your teams, what impacts them and what is happening in their home and personal life. Understand the values each of the members of your company hold true and honor them. The traits of veterans are described by Bo as individuals who have undergone significant leadership development, of which many executives never receive. Their training to work in high-performance capacities, in a zero-defect environment and support the mission is a prime example of the leadership qualities necessary for running organizations. When you add purpose, values and mutual respect and there is a perfect set of principles to cultivate to ensure a company thrives. President Trump tweets primarily through, according to reports, an iPhone that, despite being issued through White House Information Technology and the White House Communications Agency, could be a security risk. The president is supposed to swap out phones every month but refuses because it is “too inconvenient”. You may recall Hillary Clinton similarly said that she used her private email server for convenience. By failing to regularly replace the phone, President Trump leaves the device open to possible hacking and surveillance. Why would the president risk national security for convenience? Michael and Rick discuss this latest chapter of confusion in the Trump White House. Scott L.
