There's little doubt that music is an integral part of what it means to be human. But how did it first arise, how did musical instruments and compositions become ever more sophisticated and why does listening to or playing music bring us so much joy? In this episode, we speak to science writer and music producer David Darling about his latest book A Perfect Harmony: Music, Mathematics and Science. He tells us how the oldest pitched musical instrument found so far is thought to be more than 40,000 years old, the role music has played in the evolution of human culture, and what the impact AI-generated music may have on the work of human musicians and composers in the near future. The latter days of winter bring a special kind of fatigue mixed with impatience. For residents of snow-crossed parts of the country, winter has begun to overstay its welcome; while here in California, the trees are blossoming, and February feels like spring. As the sound of the season evolves, music of the far north and Arctic countries still resonates, connecting with contemplative acoustic mainstays like the cello and the piano. From deep minimalist patterns to Romantic melodicism, we find the soul and comfort to endure. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, wintry acoustic spacemusic for the season, on a program called WINTERTONES 2. With Icelandic musicians OLAFUR ARNALDS and HILDUR GUTHNADOTTIR, cellist DAVID DARLING with SYLVIA NAKKACH and JACQUELINE TSCHABOLD BHUYAN, MICHAEL HOPPE & HAROLD MOSES, BRUNO SANFILIPPO, and RALPH ZURMUHLE. Brenda McMorrow discusses mantra music and medicine songs. Brenda McMorrow is a Canadian Devotional Chant artist who is known for her unique and warmly embracing style of mantra music, in which she blends elements of acoustic folk, world rhythms, and ancient Indian chants with a sweetly introspective singer-songwriter's sensibility. Yoga Journal describes Brenda as having “a knack for expressing the deepest realizations in the sparsest lyrics”. As spiritual teacher Ram Dass has said: “Brenda has a gift”, and her music has been touching people's hearts worldwide.Originally a folk/pop singer/songwriter, it was when Brenda participated in her first Sanskrit chant while attending a Yoga workshop in 2004, that she had a profound knowing her musical journey was leading her to places more expansive and heart-opening than she had ever imagined. Brenda remembers: “It was a very simple chant (Om Namah Shivaya), and at the time I had no idea what it signified: all I knew was that every cell in my body started vibrating, and I felt absolute joy”. While in India soon thereafter, Brenda began combining her own songwriting with ancient Sanskrit chants – and she has been flowing with this divine wave of Bhakti energy ever since. With 5 celebrated devotional chant albums, Brenda is a featured artist on White Swan Records, a Colorado label.. She has shared festival stages with Krishna Das and Snatam Kaur; has been accompanied by Grammy award winning cellist David Darling; has been a guest musician with esteemed Kirtan musicians Jai Uttal, Wah!, David Newman, Girish, Mirabai Ceiba, Jai Jagdeesh, Shantala and Dave Stringer; and has been invited to Bhakti Yoga festivals and events across North America, Europe and Asia. When not on the Bhakti road, Brenda calls the countryside near beautiful Guelph, Ontario, home.https://brendamcmorrow.com/Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/truth-be-told-paranormal--3589860/support.
We live in a complex and ever-changing world. When things go wrong, it's all too easy to fall back on cynicism, worry, even despair. In difficult times, we tend to forget that despite our problems and injustices, our world is still supporting more people, at a higher standard of living, than at any time in human history. That's why the Thanksgiving holiday is a welcome respite. From its origins as an after-harvest celebration, it evolved into something more: an opportunity to convene family and friends; share comfort food and conversation; and at the heart of the holiday, the simple act of pausing, looking back, and expressing gratitude for what life has brought us this year. Like prayer, the attitude of thanks is quiet, reflective, and humble. But while prayer is normally personal, giving thanks is something we like to share — an expression of the spirit of abundance, inclusion and generosity. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, music for acceptance and gratitude, on a program called "GIVING THANKS." Music is by JONATHAN ELIAS, ELENI KARAINDROU, KEVIN KELLER, PULUSHA, HECTOR ZAZOU and DAVID DARLING. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]
At the elevated heights of musical skill, we encounter different styles of virtuosity. In classical and jazz, playing fast and furious commands the attention, raises the energy, and concentrates the mind; while playing slow, deep, and intense focuses hearing, and opens up a world of subtle timing and melodic sensitivity. This is the perception that underlies ambient, space, atmospheric, and contemplative music. For centuries the small Scandinavian country of Norway has exceled at slow, patient, intensely melodic music. It's not about how many notes you play, but how beautifully you play them. Unlike the virtuosity of fast tempos, says one of these musicians, “it's about loving every note.” On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we revisit the lyrical, atmospheric world of Eurojazz, on a program called LOVING EVERY NOTE. Music is by ØYSTEIN SEVÅG and LAKKI PATEY, THE TORD GUSTAVSEN TRIO, RUSSEL WALDER, KETIL BJORNSTAD & DAVID DARLING. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]
It's only three short months from the summer solstice to the autumn equinox, and we make the most of them: travel, vacation, backyard parties, fun at the beach or the lake, and sports and water activities of every description. All that plus balmy nights, and the hypnotic rhythm of the crickets to lull us to sleep. Summer can be a magical respite in our complicated lives, but when mid-September comes, we know it's drawing to a close. Instrumental music can express our complex feelings about the end of summer—good memories, a sense of nostalgia, a tinge of melancholy, and quiet acceptance. Acoustic instruments like piano, guitar and cello are perfect for the job, especially when enhanced by electronics. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, music for the summer/fall transition, on a program called SUMMER'S END. Music is by HELEN JANE LONG, JEFF PEARCE, KATHRYN KAYE, ANGELO RABAN, and the late DAVID DARLING. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

It's weird sometimes how you meet someone and hear their name is Lucy, for example and think – “Yeah, she kinda looks like a Lucy.” Is that really a thing – do people look like their name? Listen as I reveal some fascinating research on this. https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2405334121 Tells. They are those little behaviors people have that give them away. You hear about tells in poker, but you can learn to read someone's tells in everyday life according to my guest Peter Collett. Peter is a social psychologist who has taught at Oxford University and is widely acknowledged as an international expert on communication. He has been called a “grand master of the secret code of fleeting gestures, signs and expressions that give us all away.” He is author of the book, How To Tell What People Are Thinking From the Bedroom to the Boardroom (https://amzn.to/3WVytDM). Listen as he offers some very practical advice on how to read people based on their behavior. This is a fun topic – EXTREMES! The biggest, the brightest, the stickiest, the loudest, the quietest. We are going to discuss the extremes in many categories with my guest David Darling. He is a science writer, astronomer and author of about 50 books –including Ka-boom!: The Science of Extremes (https://amzn.to/3X5gTgJ). If you have ever wondered what the most poisonous thing or what's the brightest light on earth, or the slowest thing that actually moves – this will be a fascinating conversation to listen to. Aidlin Darling Design co-founders Joshua Aidlin and David Darling join the podcast to discuss their transition from furniture-making to architecture, the importance of relationship-building, and the firm's AIA San Francisco Center for Architecture + Design
In 1998, co-founders Joshua Aidlin and David Darling joined forces in a small woodshop studio crafting furniture. As that partnership grew, they took their approach to sensible and functional design to their work-a-day jobs as architects. Eventually joining forces and launching their own design firm, Aidlin Darling Design in San Francisco, they found a way to take their ethos and approach to custom furniture design to large scale projects. This podcast excavates the many layers and nuances Aidlin and Darling employ to integrate biophilic design, all the human senses and sustainable design into high-profile projects. Their approach to each project is client and site specific, and includes open communication among clients, consultants, fabricators, and builders to achieve innovative, unexpected results. From projects like the AIA Center for Design in San Francisco, to the University of Virginia Contemplative Sciences Center, Aidlin and Darling practice an architecture of restraint that has a focus on nature, coupled with sensorial engagement of occupants.Learning Objectives:Describe the inspirational approach to design of Aidlin and Darling.Explain how Aidlin and Darling reached out to the local art community to elevate the AIA Center for Design project.Discuss the deliberate intention of incorporating biophilic design into the UVA Contemplative Sciences Center.List the ways that Aidlin and Darling believe the next wave of architects can be cultivated and encouraged to pursue a career in design. I paint every day that I can. And every day I have something new to say about art and why I am so consumed. Today I walked in my garden just after daybreak, looking at the iris flowering in colors and patterns I have never seen. It looked like rain today and I walked back toward my studio, toward the music of Van Morrison and Jeff Buckley, dark strains from David Darling and a Bach selection - more food for the heart. I would not leave the studio today. I am completely inspired and will celebrate my senses and my life by painting and storytelling because I cannot help myself. It is this gift to see and hear and paint my thoughts that inspires me to pick up my brushes again to embark on a journey of discovery...to dance between reality and imagery. It is very much like being five years old and seeing the world as new. It is mystery and magic that I am privileged to play with. That is why I paint. -Roseta Santiago ... David Darling is an up-and-coming author, with several books under his belt, including the latest reality-bending thriller, Edge Of Time. He has been self-publishing for some time, now has an agent, and is "this close" to getting his career going. On today's 129th BONUS Episode of The Thriller Zone, David and I talk about his latest book, of course, but we also talk about life in Canada, his time of service in the Army, what it takes to be a writer today, his routine (read: substantial self-discipline), and much more.We discuss the "1,000,000 Words" aka 10,000 hour "rule" that many promote, as a way to gauge one's preparation for success. And along the way, we get his take on what it takes to be a success. All in all, it's a good time. David is a Thriller Zone fan, and he has always shown his support in so many ways. I suppose that's one of the reasons, besides his talents, I wanted to carve out some time with him. You'll enjoy his down-home approach, and clever sense of humor. And I hope you'll enjoy the bit of "Random Thoughts" I share at the very start of the show. I suppose it's a reflection of just one of the many ways I look forward to "broadening the scope" of this podcast. Let me know what you think, okay?To learn more about David, visit his website: DavidDarlingBooks.com, take a look around, and consider helping a creative guy who loves to write. His book drops on 4.25.I'm David Temple, host of TheThrillerZone.com, and I thank you for listening.
In today's episode, I'm honored to interview Hans Christian, a cellist, multi-instrumentalist, and producer with over 35 years of experience. Hans is also a founding member of the duo Rasa, along with Kim Waters, creating music based on Indian devotional love songs from the Vaishnava tradition, sung in Bengali and arranged with Western and Indian elements. Here he talks about the new album Ocean Dreaming Ocean (a posthumous collaboration with the Grammy-winning artist David Darling), discusses his journey into Music, and reflects on the importance of engaging with the world. Don't miss the music mix that follows our chat.
This episode was originally released in 2015. Proceeds from this episode are being donated to the Transgender Law Center. Music *Under the credits is Harlaamstrat 74 off of John Dankworth's Modesty Blaise score. *The piece opens with Rainfall, by David Darling and Michael Jones. *Her brief love story is scored by Nathan Johnson's Penelope's Theme from his score to The Brothers Bloom. *When she lands her first gig, we start Garde a Vue, and roll into Le Roi de coeur, from Chantal Martineau. * The vibraphone piece is “Opening” by Nathaniel Bartlett. * The recurring violin piece is called Geometria del Universo by the one-named Colleen. * It ends on Romain's First Love, again by Georges Delarue, from his fantastic score to Promise at Dawn. Notes * I read a lot about Mary, but by far the most useful and most thorough works I came upon were: Sharon M. Harris' Dr. Mary Walker: An American Radical and A Woman of Honor: Dr. Mary E. Walker and the Civil War, in which author Mercedes Graf does a great job walking the reader through Walker's unpublished memoir. David Darling joins the show to talk about his new thriller, Grave Choices, the second book in his Noah Hunter series, as well as writing, his Canadian Military days, and becoming a self-publishing master. David started writing several years ago when he suffered an injury that kept him limited for a while, and after reading several good thrillers he caught the writing bug. Next thing he knew he was several books into the creative process and ready to publish. When no publisher came knocking, David, invested in himself and self-published. And he never looked back. His first book, The Tipping Point, is an international best-seller and there's no doubt Grave Choices will follow up with equal performance. Grave Choices will release on 30 November 2021 on Amazon. Dark Matter with Art Bell - David Darling Asteroids & The Cosmos
1983…the year before the infamous 1984. Seems lifetimes ago, doesn't it? But that was the year that a syndicated music program called Hearts of Space began to appear on public radio stations around the U.S. And that means that 2023 is the 40th anniversary of the national program! I'm STEPHEN HILL, producer of Hearts of Space, and I was taught that if something was worth doing, not only was it worth doing well, it was worth doing for a long time. That, and the support of my colleagues, hundreds of stations, thousands of artists, and millions of listeners like you—has kept us going all this time. To mark our 40th year, we're rebroadcasting program number One, 'FIRST FLIGHT' from January 1983. It's a perfect example of the open-minded, multi-genre, multi-cultural sonic integration of contemporary Ambient, Space, and Contemplative music. On our premiere program we featured music by a group of artists who became familiar names in the Hearts of Space pantheon of composers: KITARO, VANGELIS & IRENE PAPPAS, THOMAS DE HARTMANN, MICHAEL STEARNS, DEUTER, PAUL LLOYD WARNER & STEVEN KINDLER, CHARLES LLOYD, and DAVID DARLING. It's a journey across time...and space. FIRST FLIGHT...on this hour...of HEARTS OF SPACE. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

Chris and I have been having musical soulversations for close to two decades. An accomplished film composer, conductor and musician based in LA, he has worked with Michael Bublé, Dr. Dre, Christina Aguilera and many others. More importantly, he has a deep and profound understanding and approach to the art and practice of creating music. We went through David Darling's Music for People apprenticeship together and share a similar love and passion for the art of improvisation. We dive into the first time he heard Dark Wood one of David's poignant solo cello albums that helped him begin to look at the art of music making from a more profound and simple approach - what David often called Deep Listening - or playing from INSIDE the music, i.e., allowing the music to be birthed from this incredibly intimate, innocent and vulnerable place we all have within. Join us for this deep dive into what "Being In The Music" means to us and how David's legacy lives on a year after he transitioned to the other side of things. Here is a bit more about Chris: As a conductor and orchestrator, Christopher Anderson-Bazzoli has worked with top recording artists Michael Bublé, Dr. Dre, Christina Aguilera, and She & Him, among others. Today's guest deejay is James Vella. We have Robert Farrugia from Complex Holiday to thank for James's mix. I asked Robert who he knew who he thought would share a mix on Soundwave, and he recommended James. Oh, listen to Robert's mix for Soundwave here. Robert had not steered me wrong. James runs Phantom Limb, a record label, a music publishing, and touring and label management company. I dipped into his roster of artists, which ranges from everything from experimental hip hop to music inspired by Pre-Columbian Central and South American myths and folktales. James's mix explores a lot of terrain and includes a song he recorded under the name A Lily that's beautiful. There's also a track in James's mix that is almost too painful to listen to. David Darling joins the show to talk about his new thriller, Grave Choices, the second book in his Noah Hunter series, as well as writing, his Canadian Military days, and becoming a self-publishing master.David started writing several years ago when he suffered an injury that kept him limited for a while, and after reading several good thrillers he caught the writing bug. Next thing he knew he was several books into the creative process and ready to publish. When no publisher came knocking, David, invested in himself and self-published.And he never looked back. His first book, The Tipping Point, is an international best-seller and there's no doubt Grave Choices will follow up with equal performance.Grave Choices will release on 30 November 2021 on Amazon. Cindy Alexander is no stranger to overcoming the odds: A cancer survivor, mother of twin girls, and a successful touring independent artist for 15 years prior to signing with Blue Élan Records. Writing a record while her mother was dying from dementia, recording while navigating a world of pandemic and protests, and trying to finish anything while teaching her kids from home during a “Safer at Home” order were just a few more elements to add to her already colorful story of personal perseverance. Cindy tells it like it is – the Truth with a capital “T.” As Cindy says, “I can't pretend that everything's ok, because it's not. But, I always see the light – in you, in me, in the world that was created from it. My journey in this body is about finding it, sharing it, becoming it. It's a struggle. It's painful. It's delightful. It's ecstatic.” While the Angels Sigh is at once a musical affirmation of personal power and grace and an acceptance of human weakness and fallibility. Cindy Alexander has written a songbook for the sandwich generation, with wisdom for millennials, and gratitude to the generations that came before her.It took two years to curate the song list with executive producer and label co-founder, Kirk Pasich. “It was two years of me digging deep, during a dark time, to believe in myself and my musical mission, even if others did not,” Cindy explains. “I committed to sharing my truth and my passion, to work with people who could help me manifest my vision, and seized the opportunity to create without being edited, censored, or silenced. I am so very blessed that Blue Élan Records gave me that opportunity.”By late 2019, Cindy Alexander sat in Sage & Sound Studio with a dream team of musicians, led by producer/bass player Sean Hurley and producer/drummer Victor Indrizzo. The first song they tackled was “Try Try Try,” a co-write with Cindy's career-long collaborator, Grammy award-nominated producer, and songwriter, David Darling. The song is about trying to connect and reignite the passion when life gets in the way and distracts us from what really matters. While writing the song, a distracted Cindy had fallen and broken her elbow and wrist while running to make a meeting (“at least I feel alive…bleeding from a break”). It was Kirk's idea to record a second “live” version of the song (all players in one room in one take) as an acoustic ballad, turning a sexy bar burner into a trippy, hypnotic siren song.“Room at the Bottom,” a tongue in cheek ode to the down and out musician, as well as an answer to Tom Petty's “Room at the Top,” was built around a signature guitar lick by David Levita (Alanis Morissette, Lana Del Rey, Sheryl Crow) and a scrappy, beat-up piano part by Michael Farrell (Alanis Morissette, Macy Gray), achieved by placing three No.2 pencils on the piano strings to create the distortion.“Broken but Beloved,” a song about impermanence, was recorded with Grammy award-winning producer and engineer Ross Hogarth at Sunset Sound. It was the last in-person session before the Los Angeles lockdown order took effect in March 2020. Cindy's dear friend and touring buddy, Michael Bacon (one-half of the Bacon Brothers and award-winning composer) contributed cello from his studio in New York. After recording his part, he sent Cindy a note, in which she found the title of her new record:“When I write my ‘Remediation Practices for Enduring the Pandemic,' chapter 2 will read 1. Get an amazing lifelong friend who's got Beverly Hills chops but keeps it real. 2. Have her write a beautiful song. 3. Have her ask you to put 1,000,000 cell parts on it. 4. Do that. Title of the album: ‘While the Angels Sigh.'”Tracks were transferred back and forth throughout the 2020 quarantine between home studios and finally finished up in Cindy's bedroom at her new home in Big Sur.

Tami Simon speaks with Coleman Barks, a leading scholar and translator of the 13th-century Persian mystic Jelaluddin Rumi. Coleman’s work was the subject of an hour-long segment in Bill Moyers’s The Language of Life series on PBS. He has published numerous Rumi translations, including with Sounds True the audio programs I Want Burning: The Ecstatic World of Rumi, Hafiz, and Lalla; Rumi: Voice of Longing; and his three-part collaboration with cellist David Darling called Just Being Here: Rumi and Human Friendship. In this episode, Tami speaks with Coleman about the extraordinary friendship between Rumi and his teacher Shams Tabrizi, and how translating Rumi requires entering a trance state. Coleman offers insights on grace as he and Tami listen to selections from Just Being Here. Click here to listen to Holiday Without Limits by Coleman Barks
Welcome to Episode 003 of the Glitter and Sage podcast! In this episode, I hang out with world percussionist Arjun Bruggeman and his sweet dog Mooji at The Omega Institute for Holistic Studies. Arjun had just finished playing tabla with Grammy nominated artist Krishna Das at the Kirtan workshop Ecstatic Chant. As Arjun and I throw Mooji his bunny toy, we have an inspiring conversation. In this episode: INTRO -I share about how I met Arjun at the retreat center I was living/working at -I give an update on Arjun's offerings since we recorded the interview over a year ago, including upcoming album releases and virtual percussion lessons INTERVIEW -Arjun explains Kirtan music -He shares about his Guru, Siddhi Ma, and his time in India -Arjun talks about touring in a punk rock band at the age of 14 -We both talk about our connections to our animals, and Arjun shares how Mooji came into his life -Arjun talks about importance of having a morning practice and the experience of spaciousness -He shares about his improvisational music -Mooji sings for us and inspires a new musical project -Arjun plays for us on the bendir frame drum ARTIST BIO “Arjun Bruggeman, world percussionist, drummer, composer and session recording artist, is highly acclaimed for his unique hybrid of East-meets-West rhythms. At the age of 9 Arjun started playing guitar, bass and drums. By the age of 14 he embarked on a touring career playing drums with punk rock bands. His interest in early progressive, metal and jazz rhythms led him into a creative journey and later found himself enthralled by world percussion. Simultaneously, Arjun practiced many forms of Eastern spirituality. Through these explorations he merged the inner quest with the exterior expressions of sound and found himself supporting spoken word with Coleman Barks and David Darling. Arjun recalls, “I wanted to go deeper. I wanted to support something that was bigger than me.” This profound experience led Arjun to meet Krishna Das and a connection with Neem Karoli Baba. Soon thereafter he began touring with Krishna Das worldwide and over the past decade has shared the stage with noted musicians Sting, John Densmore, Mark Egan, Jerry Morrata, Steve Gorn, Jackson Browne and David Crosby and Graham Nash. In 2016, Arjun released his self-titled debut album Arjun. The six-track album features all original compositions exploring the musical journey of the soul. In June 2019 Arjun has released his follow-up offering of world percussion centered on improvisation and other worldly soundscapes with friends Mark Egan, Shane Theriot and David Darling called Otherworld. Additionally, he has partnered with renowned jazz artist Mark Egan, the duo's album "Dreaming Spirits" was released in 2018 in which he was rated #3 for best percussionist for that year by Jazz Station LA.” RESOURCES: My Instagram: @glitter.and.sage Arjun Instagram: @arjun108b Website: https://www.arjunbruggeman.com/ Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2nIOY5jfkuhF4f6aYiQrjP?si=Q-GiaoxWR_CXwo06zrrKeg His dog Mooji's Instagram: @moojipupmania Krishna Das Instagram: @krishnadasmusic My favorite Ravi Shankar video at Monterey Pop: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lk60ObnbIOk Glitter and Sage podcast sound engineer/video editing: David Atwood Instagram: @mratwoodmusic https://open.spotify.com/artist/4vSKrFQnV2MfsilThMT9Tc?si=gPCRB7E4QQWTqke-37K4TA Intro/Outro Music: “Drishti” by Cosmal Instagram: @cosmal.live https://cosmal.bandcamp.com/ Thanks for tuning in and joining our conversation, next week's episode features an interview with musician/songwriter Adam Fichtelberg. In Part 1 of our posthumous retrospective of cellist DAVID DARLING called 'RESONANT DARK,' we focused on his groundbreaking early albums for the German ECM label. Darling told the story of his first session with ECM producer MANFRED EICHER, who set the agenda definitively by saying "I want you to go as deep as you can go." In ten albums from 1980 to 2000, they did just that, defining and setting a standard for darkly serious ambient chamber music. But there was other music in David Darling's heart. In the early 1990s, he began to pursue a more varied, romantic, even playful direction in recordings for other labels. Rather than the two day recording schedule at ECM, he took his time. Working with patient, supportive engineer/producers like MICKEY HOULIHAN and TOMMY SKARUPA, Darling achieved new heights of beauty in his solo recordings, collaborated generously with other artists, and broadened his appeal. Through it all, he continued to inspire, teaching and leading improvisation workshops for his non-profit organization Music For People, and working with spiritual teachers like AL HUANG, SYLVIA NAKKACH, and COLEMAN BARKS. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we focus on David Darling's post-ECM recordings EIGHT STRING RELIGION, CELLO BLUE, GRATITUDE, HOMAGE TO KINDNESS, and his Grammy-winning PRAYER FOR COMPASSION. Jonathan Best is a multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist who is devoted to helping the world transform through music. A true music gardener, Jonathan and I met while we were both going through a life changing program known as Music For People guided by our beloved teacher, friend and fellow musician David Darling. We had scheduled this session before David suddenly and unexpectedly took his last breath in his body just days before this episode was recorded. David's life and music touched and inspired us and allowed us to dive very deep on this particularly episode about what David and music has meant to us. In particular, Jonathan's work with the Maasai tribe in Africa is a powerful example of the ability for music to empower us by creating healing heart-centered community. Jonathan teaches at Prescott College in Arizona, and touches lives by making the impossible possible and expressing the inexpressible through the language of love - which we both agree is the essence of music. Jonathan evoked in me in this episode a deep emotional moment at 1hr and 2min in - where we both agreed that making a sound, even hitting one note is a sacred prayer if done with the right intention and sincerity, which we both discovered very young. David Darling taught us that we ALL have music in us and we become healthy individually and culturally when we make room for ALL of us to feel safe enough to make a genuine sound from our hearts. From Jonathan: I have put music front and center of everything I do since childhood from playing on street corners and subway platforms and in storefront churches, traveling the south in a gospel bus to traveling the world with rock stars. I was put in jail for inciting a riot with music. In 2007 I enrolled in a four year Musician Leadership program at Music for People while at the same time making trips to Kenya to work with the Maasai people creating a media center and co-creating documentaries by and for the Maasai communities. What I learned from the Maasai people is that when music is interwoven into the very fabric of a community, the community is able to withstand debilitating drought and oppression. These experiences inspired me to start a non-profit called comMUSIKey where music is the key to community, which runs workshops and gives lessons in developing community-centered music. This, in turn, led to the BuildTheBridges.rocks project which entailed bringing music and musical instruments to the US/Mexico border and to shelters and to churches housing asylum seekers. We are forever looking for ways to use music to build bridges and take down walls between people and ideas. The hypnotic pizzicato rhythm; the patient exploration of contemplative space; the ardent lyricism and emotional depth of the virtual string orchestra — these are hallmarks of the music of cellist DAVID DARLING, who left us at the beginning of 2021 after a long and exemplary life in music. When HOS launched our nationally syndicated program in 1983, David Darling was featured in program number one, and was already one of our core artists. Born in Indiana in 1941, he studied cello at Indiana State University, became the first cellist of the pioneering jazz/classical fusion ensemble THE WINTER CONSORT in 1970, and played principal cello in the Nashville Symphony. His 1980 solo debut on the respected German jazz label ECM began a twenty year creative relationship with producer MANFRED EICHER, and ten albums that set a standard for creative contemporary string recordings. In a unique career that extended over 50 years, David Darling distinguished himself as much more than a contemporary musician. His work as a music educator, contributions to humanitarian projects, and collaborations with poets and spiritual teachers, set an example of a musical life devoted to service and inspiration. In addition to his ECM recordings, Darling sought out collaborations from outside the world of contemporary jazz, resulting in many diverse and richly romantic recordings, which we'll cover in a second retrospective. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, the ECM recordings of DAVID DARLING, on a program called RESONANT DARK. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

In a normal year, the autumn season brings music with smoky timbres, dissonant harmonies, descending progressions, and gentle melancholy. This year we have to include the emotions that accompany a devastating global disease, isolation, and loss. We're challenged to reach into our battered hearts and summon up additional generosity, to give thanks for what we have. Now the days grow short, the nights grow long, and a chill descends on the land as the northern hemisphere slowly tilts away from the sun. It's a time for quiet reflection and the cultivation of inner strength to confront the challenges ahead. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, ambient, chamber and sacred music for a haunted autumn, on a program called RECESSION 2. Music is by KEVIN KELLER, ÓLAFUR ARNALDS, DAVID DARLING, GUNNARD DOBOZE, and MAX RICHTER. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

THE SUN begins its long withdrawal from the northern hemisphere after the summer solstice in June. After the autumn equinox in September, the transition seems to accelerate. The days grow shorter, the nights grow longer, and the temperature cools, while the natural world changes color and prepares for the winter to come. Since medieval times we've called this season "fall." The word comes from Middle English, with Old English and Old German roots. Falling implies movement downward, and in autumn declining solar energy brings a feeling of descending or falling into the season. In music it's marked by slowing tempos, descending chord progressions, darkening timbres, and wistful, even melancholy emotions. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we descend into the autumn soundscape, on a program called FALLING. Music is by DAVID DARLING, JOEP BEVING, CHRISTOPHER TIGNOR, HAMMOCK, LUDOVICO EINAUDI, and TOM EATON. [ view program page ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

In today's episode, I wanted to celebrate 50 episodes in style by bringing someone who's work has had a profound impact on generations of musicians: bass player and author of The Inner Game of Music, Barry Green. I'm very happy and honored that Barry accepted to be on the show to have this very, very important conversation with me because his authentic approach to music-making has inspired and influenced thousands of musicians and redefined careers throughout the years. In today's conversation, Barry talks about some principles of the Inner Game, including what we should focus on, why we need to “Turn Up the Music” and how this simple act can transform our playing and change our life, how we can reach a state of relaxed concentration, how effective experience-lead learning is, and how to set effective goals. He expands further on: How “When you are playing the inner game, the quality of your experience becomes just as important as your actual success.” How the only game we have control over is doing what we do best How putting our focus on the things that we can control means that we can experience what we're doing fully How we can reach the state of relaxed concentration using: Awareness techniques (what we see, hear, feel, etc.) Commitment techniques (how well we prepare) Trust skills (physical memory and advanced preparation) Experience-lead learning: “Do” instructions VS “Awareness” instructions Having more fun and accomplishing more while practicing Setting productive and effective goals It was a true honor to have Barry on the show and I hope you enjoy his wisdom as much as I did and walk away inspired and motivated! Green was the first bass soloist ever to solo with the Cincinnati Symphony in 1970 when he commissioned Frank Proto to write the Concerto for Bass and Orchestra conducted by Erich Kunzel. He has since twice appeared with the Cincinnati Symphony under the late Maestro Thomas Schippers who personally commissioned the Frank Proto Violin and Double Bass Concerto (with Ruggiero Ricci). In 1993 Green performed Jon Deak's concerto Jack and the Beanstalk conducted by Jesus Lopez-Cobos. He most recently performed the Deak concerto in February 2005 with the US Air Force Band in Washington DC, Constitution Hall and Duluth Symphony. Barry is known for his creative and eclectic ‘Green Machine' and “Green Man” concerts including the bass in jazz, folk, rock, funk, hip-hop contemporary and world music in combination with, dance, voice, art and theater. Green has written three books on the ‘mind-body and spirit' of performing musicians. He is author of the Doubleday book The Inner Game of Music, with W. Timothy Gallwey, and DVD (1986) which deals with musicians reaching their potential in performance and learning which has sold over 250,000 copies worldwide. He has written seven Inner Game of Music Workbooks published by GIA Music for keyboard, voice, instruments and ensembles. Green's 2nd book, The Mastery of Music, Ten Pathways to True Artistry was published by Broadway/Doubleday in May 2003. The Mastery of Music is based on interviews with over 120 world famous musicians on topics of courage, passion, creativity, discipline, humility etc. It deals with qualities of greatness from the human spirit that transcend all professions. Jazz and classical artists interviewed include Dave Brubeck, Bobby McFerrin, Joshua Bell, Frederica von Stade, Christopher Parkening, Evelyn Glennie, Gary Karr, Jeffrey Kahane and many more. Green's most recent book (and DVD) is called Bringing Music to Life and was published by GIA Music. The book is exploring three techniques of breath, pulse and movement that allow the musician to channel expression through their bodies. This work is based on exploring creativity and inspiration through collaboration with the great improvisation cellist David Darling and his organization called Music for People. In August 1977, Ohio astronomer Jerry Ehman discovered a radio signal so exciting that he wrote "Wow!" in the margin of its computer printout. Arriving from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius, the signal bore all the characteristics of an alien transmission. But despite decades of eager listening, astronomers have never heard it repeated. In this episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll review the story of the "Wow! signal," which remains an intriguing, unexplained anomaly in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. We'll also share some more nuggets from Greg's database of oddities and puzzle over why a man chooses to drive a long distance at only 15 mph. Sources for our segment on the Wow! signal: Robert H. Gray, The Elusive Wow, 2012. Giuseppe Cocconi and Philip Morrison, "Searching for Interstellar Communication," Nature, Sept. 19, 1959. Frank White, The SETI Factor, 1990. David W. Notes and sources for our miscellany from Greg's notes: Iowa City's web page explains that Lyman Dillon plowed a furrow from Iowa City to Dubuque in 1839. The item on oil pit squids is from George Eberhart's 2002 book Mysterious Creatures. The squids were found in "oil-emulsion pits containing antifreeze, stripper, oil, and chemicals used in manufacturing plastic automobile bumpers." Eberhart cites Ken de la Bastide, "Creature in Plant 9 Pits," Anderson (Ind.) Herald Bulletin, March 5, 1997. Thanks to reader John McKenna for letter from the ancient Greek boy Theon to his father. It's from the Oxyrhynchus papyri, from the 2nd or 3rd century: Theon to his father Theon, greeting. It was a fine thing of you not to take me with you to the city! If you won't take me with you to Alexandria I won't write you a letter or speak to you or say goodbye to you; and if you go to Alexandria I won't take your hand nor ever greet you again. That is what will happen if you won't take me. Mother said to Archelaus, 'it quite upsets him to be left behind.' It was good of you to send me presents ... on the 12th, the day you sailed. Send me a lyre, I implore you. If you don't, I won't eat, I won't drink; there now! The item on William and Henry James is from Vincent Barry's 2007 book Philosophical Thinking About Dying. According to the Encyclopedia of Fictional and Fantastic Languages (2006), Gaff's command to Deckard in Blade Runner is Monsieur, azonnal kövessen engem bitte ("Sir, follow me immediately please"). The anecdote about Alfred Lunt and the green umbrella is from the Methuen Drama Dictionary of the Theatre (2013). In our western culture we think of manifestation as being a linear process. I think of something, I visualize it, I meditate on it and it appears. We don't often think of the creative process as being cyclical, in that it re-occurs regularly, and has various stages. There are quiet portions to the Creative Cycle that occur before anything comes into form. These quiet portions are seldom noticed. But it is while the energies of Spirit and Nature are gestating that we as humans can often nourish or accidentally trample upon something potentially manifesting in our lives. Here is a meditation supported by the energetic presence of Archangel Michael, Mary and Thoth to help you notice and attend to projects that Spirit is already working on bringing into in your life.1 Introduction to the Manifestation portion of the Creative Cycle 2 Creating Sacred Space: Why include Nature Spirits in Your Sacred Space 3 The Quiet Motion of Spirit 4 Meditation – Allowing Spirit to Support You (even more) 5 Prioritizing What We Nourish in Our Lives 6 Meditation - Letting Spirit Bless You *7 Blessing Song 8 Tend your Garden, and Yourself 09 Our Shared World of Form and Global Environment 10 Releasing Sacred Space 11 Closing – the meditation will continue Total Time 62 minsBlessing Song (#7) is excerpted from a live concert of spontaneous improvised songs given by myself and David Darling. Healing Meditations for Ancient Consciousness from Nature and new insights from Thoth Through a series of meditations and insights, Thoth and others point out to humanity a doorway through which an ancient consciousness of the First Creative Cycle, long asleep within the Earth as oil, might now pass onto its own healing journey. As this happens, humanity's relationship with oil and other “inanimate” beings changes. This is our next step. Here are some ideas how we might begin it. Moving into a new relationship with all of the consciousnesses with whom we share our planet means letting go of our belief that anyone of us knows how another should act, should be, or even should heal. 1. 'The End of Trying' is not a 'typical' Dakota Suite Release. Unlike most Dakota Suite albums (except 1999's Navigators Yard) it is fully instrumental, with Chris Hooson, David Buxton and Colin Dunkley playing piano and David Darling playing cello. The latter fact may indicate the mood of the music on this album: it is extremely delicate, heartbreaking melancholic music. A 'classic' release that immediately struck me when I first heard it in the beginning of this year. The track titles indicate the overall mood of this music: How Could You Let Me Go, Things We Lost Along The Way, All The Love I Had Was Not Enough, A Quietly Gathering Tragedy, and not forgetting "Een Langzaam Lekkende Wond' (A Slow Leaking Wound) which reminds us of the fact that Chris Hooson lived in Holland for quite a few years. This beautiful sad music is clearly not meant to brighten up your day. But it might soothe your sadness with rays of hope shining through empathic, understanding themes and fabulous cello sounds. 'The End of Trying' is one of the most beautiful albums I have heard this year, and it even gains strength with the companion CD that was released shortly after the release of the original: "The Night Keeps Coming In". --- originally published on Ambientblog --- Playlist: 1. "Mantra of Walls and Wiring" is the first of a set of three one hour mixes created in 2005. The other two are "The Hum in the Room" and "Acoustical Illusion" (will follow later). As you can read from the titles, these mixes thematically deal with the sound you can hear in your living environment; the 'everyday hum' surrounding you. I got inspired for this theme when I listened to a slowly fading ambient-cd...and finally realised the cd had already stopped for quite a while and I was obviously listening to (and enjoying) the hum of my own refrigerator! Since then the household environmental sounds do not disturb me anymore...they became part of the music I'm playing. Starting point of these programs is the text Paul Simon wrote for Philip Glass's 'Changing Opinion' ('Songs from Liquid Days'), featured here in an extremely 'deconstructed' version (full text below). Compared to the previous mixes these mixes are less accessible for listeners not used to 'ambient drone music'. These are the most 'minimal' mixes, containing some very strange combinations: the David Darling recording with the Wulu Bunun for example (which may give the feeling you are lifted into the sky) flowing into the sound of eternal rest of Eliane Radigue, followed by Herbert's sound of home-cooking bringing you back to your own private home. As in all mixes, there are some dark and tense parts. This is not meant to be 'new age happiness' at all. But in fact its serene timelessness never fails to amaze me. --- originally published on Ambientblog --- PLAYLIST: Philips Cellulite Remover- private collectionEvil Jon - fc4004- Wein, Weib und Gesang, 2004, Kikapu KPU 072Philip Glass - Changing Opinion (deconstructed)- Music from Liquid Days, 1986, CBS DIDC 10217Stephen Phillips - Drone 2- Drone Download Project 2003Scanner - Spyder- X-Rated, the Electronic Files, 2002, Boudisque BOU 8Sleep Research Facility - Nostromo – A Deck- Nostromo, 2001, Cold Spring csr34cdAlp Fridge - Freezer- At home with Alp, 1999, Soleilmoon 01863Igneous Flame - Cyclical- unreleased, 2004Arve Henriksen - Breathing- Sakuteiki, 2001, Rune Grammofon 2021Alan Howarth - Sailing Ship Creaks- Real Hollywood Sound Effects, 1997, GNP crescendo 8054Annette van de Gorne - Terre- Storm of Drones, 1996, Asphodel 966Christopher Hobbs - McGrimmon will never return- Ensemble Pieces, 1975, Obscure OBS2Austere - Whainer- Drone Download Project 2003Stars of the Lid - Down 3- The Tired Sounds of, 2001, Kranky KRANK 050Alvin Lucier - Music on a long thin wire- Ohm, the Electric Gurus of Electronic Music 2000, Ellipsis CD3270Darrin Verhagen - As X-rays- Black Frost, 2004, Dorobo 020Rumble, low frequency- private collectionArno Peeters - The Clothing Room Sphere- private collectionArno Peeters - Shaftsphere- private collectionSleep Research Facility - Dead Weather Machine- Dead Weather Machine, 2004, manifold MANCD042Johann Johannson - Virgulegu Forsetar, second movement- Virgulegu Forsetar, 2004, Touch TO:64Richard Bone - Stillness Repeating- Ambienism, 2004, Spiralight RecordingsGrandma's Fussbuster - How Dry I Am / Rub-a-dub-dub, I can't believe it's a tub- Grandma's Fussbuster, CDBABY, 1996Boyd Rice (Non) - Extract 12- Terra Incognita, 2004, Mute Records 9256David Darling & the Wulu Bunun - Pasibutbut (Prayer for a rich millet harvest)- Mudanin Kata, 2004, Riverboat, TUGCD 1032Eliane Radigue - Kailasha- Trilogie de la Mort, 1998, XI records, XI 119Herbert - In the Kitchen- Around the House, 2002, !K7, !K7105CDAlp - Microwave Oven / Electric Oven / Pan of Boiling Water- At home with Alp, 1999, Soleilmoon 01863

--- originally published on Ambientblog ---
Vergeten Tijd ('Time Forgotten') was not specifically created for the Polderlicht Project (Amsterdam, 2001), but the mix fits in seamlessly with KlankSluis and Eindpunt. Because these three mixes were broadcast in one 'go' on dutch radio in 2002, I like to refer to them as the "Polderlicht Trilogy". To me, good drone/ambient music always has a feeling of timelessness. This mix (like most of my others) combines some of the deepest drones (Thomas Köner, Alio Die, Stars of the Lid) with music that is not even remotely considered 'ambient', yet has a similar feeling (Calexico, David Darling, Kimmo Pohjonen). --- originally published on Ambientblog --- Vergeten Tijd Playlist: Kimmo Pohjonen - Avanto - Kluster - 2002Alio Die - The Hidden Spring - The Hidden Spring -1999Kit Clayton - Untitled 7 - Lateral Forces (Surface Fault) - 2001Stars of the Lid - Gasfarming - The Tired Sounds of...- 2001Toshinori Kondo & Bill Laswell - Untitled Track - Life Space Death - 2001Tom Heasley - Ground Zero - Where the Earth Meets the Sky - 2001310 - Persian Wolf - Downtown and Brooklyn Only - 2001310 - Prewar Doorman - Downtown and Brooklyn Only - 2001David Darling - Lament - Cello - 1993Silent Watcher of Dark Matters- Deep Space - Toward the Infinite - 2001Peter Schaefer - Gulf Savannah - The Mynah - 1996Austere - Thanatos - Monodia- 1999Loop Guru - Saboda - Catalogue of Desires, vol. 3: the Clear White Variation - 1996Thomas Köner - Meta Incognita - Permafrost - 1997Jochem Paap - Un-klkkn - Vrs-Mbnt-Pcs 9598 I - 1998Falling Water - Bamboo Rainsticks - Bamboo Rainsticks - 1999Arve Henriksen - White Gravel - Sakuteiki - 2001David Tollefson - Exqoor (illusive mix) - The Other World - 1998Kimmo Pohjonen - Alla - Kluster - 2002Calexico - Untitled II - Hot Rail - 2000Egghatcher - Sweep - The Other World - 1998Lull - Travels - Dreamt about Dreaming - 1992LLIPS vs. Starfish Pool - Mouthful - Sweetwater - 2000Steve Roach - Midnight Loom - Midnight Moon - 1998Solitaire - Runes - Ritual Ground - 1993Air Liquide - Tinitus - rauschen gefährdet ihre gesundheit - Abuse your Illusions - 1995Paul Giger - Zauerli 3 - Alpstein - 1991Piano Magic - Untitled III - Son de Mar - 2001
