Welcome to Week 9 of the IGNTR NFL Pickem Show, where we break down the week's games faster than Scott can insert himself into wagers he's got no business being a part of! Anyway, last week was a doozy. Jayden Daniels proved he's got a cannon for an arm and a knack for the dramatic with that 52-yard Hail Mary, saving Washington's hopes and probably some folks' fantasy seasons. Over in Chicago, they pulled a stunt straight out of the 80s ala William Perry by giving the ball to an offensive lineman at the goal line—because, why not?And let's not gloss over the Seahawks' running backs who collectively decided to take the week off, letting the Bills turn their defense into Swiss cheese. Meanwhile, Jamison and David were busy trying to bet on how many times Aaron Rodgers would mention his ayahuasca retreat in post-game interviews. So, buckle up folks, Week 9 is here and it's gonna be another rollercoaster of jaw-dropping plays, baffling decisions, and Scott, what more can be said. Have you had a child fathered by Jamison Wall? We want to know. Send us the salacious details at igntrnetwork@gmail.com or on X @IgntrNetwork

Bruce Blair turned from academics to founding Global Zero, dedicated to the same goal. And a coalition of activist groups formed the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, ICAN. The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy

How Do Therapists Develop? Curt and Katie chat about how therapists can be rigid in their thinking at times and then seem to be performing mental gymnastics at other times. We look at the developmental stages of therapists (drawing from William Perry's work) and identify where therapists get stuck, where they often regress, rebel, or sink into compliance. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! In this podcast episode we talk about what typical development looks like for therapists Therapists go through developmental stages just like everyone else. We thought it would be good to look at how therapists can get stuck in rigidity (or do mental gymnastics) at early stages of development. How can therapists be both rigid AND do mental gymnastics? ·      Therapists employ mental gymnastics when they are trying to put together conflicting ideas and solve all of the problems in the field, individually ·      Rigidity can happen when people have “figured out” their own choices and believe that everyone should do what they do ·      Under-resourced and under-motivated folks can often get very rigid How do William Perry's developmental stages apply to therapist development? ·      First stage is dualism (i.e., right or wrong), everything is fixable or solvable (grad school students wanting to know what to do) ·      Second stage is about finding the right authority to listen to (i.e., sticking very tightly to a specific modality) ·      Third stage, early multiplicity, which is getting to the stage where therapists start to know what they don't know ·      Fourth stage, late multiplicity, most problems have solutions we don't know, people can have their own opinions, and some problems can't be solved. This is a very uncomfortable stage. ·      There are additional stages mentioned in the episode, we focus on Stage 4 ·      When people get stuck at stage 4, they are likely to regress to early stages (and become more rigid) or they are likely to rebel, or play the game What are the concerns with therapists at earlier stages not moving through to later stages? ·      Therapist Facebook groups may support stage 4 and earlier therapists providing dualistic or simplistic questions and answers leading to shortsighted ·      Difficulty looking at any opposing voices due to rigidity or rebellion or compliance How can therapists avoid rigidity in their thinking (or rebellion, or compliance)? ·      Providing space to understand the options ·      Employing critical thinking ·      Deeper thought about what you're doing and why you're doing it ·      Explore context and have conversations with folks further along in their development Resources for Modern Therapists mentioned in this Podcast Episode: We've pulled together resources mentioned in this episode and put together some handy-dandy links. Ken Auletta: The Theranos Story

Shaping Opinion

Play Episode Listen Later May 1, 2023 49:55

Journalist Ken Auletta joins Tim to talk about the story of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos from the perspective as the reporter who helped introduce the woman and the company to the world.  In December 2014, Ken was one of the first to conduct in-depth interviews with all of the major players at Theranos and their booming start-up company. Little did he or anyone know at the time how the Theranos story would unfold.  Ken talks about his coverage of Elizabeth Holmes in The New Yorker and the story that unfolded. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/Ken_Auletta_-_Theranos_auphonic.mp3 If you were to conduct an Internet search of Elizabeth Holmes today, you'd learn that one of the terms that often accompanies the 39-year-old's name is “disgraced Theranos CEO.” This is the result of the story we are about to tell. At the moment, she is appealing her federal conviction for fraud that was committed while she led Theranos, that had promised a revolutionary new way to conduct the full range of blood tests. Her story gave us a glimpse as to some of the inner workings of Silicon Valley. Homes now has to serve an 11-year prison sentence because a jury found her guilty of four counts of fraud and conspiracy against company investors. They believed in her promise to change the way blood could be collected and tested, and in turn, transform healthcare. That's where we are now. But the story started almost 20 years ago when Holmes dropped out of Stanford University. She was only 19 years old then. She left Stanford to start Theranos. Almost from the start, the company had attracted lots of money from some extremely influential investors. Holmes herself had the kind of magnetism the media likes. She was young and smart. She was a really effective speaker and salesperson. And she seemed to have a sense of personal branding long before that became a thing. She patterned herself after Apple founder and tech pioneer Steve Jobs. She wore black turtlenecks, almost exclusively. She adopted a slow, deliberate and deep speaking style that at times was almost hypnotic. She created a media persona that had others characterizing her as the female Steve Jobs. This was no coincidence, of course. It was all calculated. She was rewarded with an avalanche of positive media coverage. Elizabeth Holmes graced just about every major business magazine cover. She was billed as “the world's youngest self-made woman billionaire.” She was said to be worth $4.5 billion. Her company – Theranos – at its peak, was valued at $10 billion. Some of its well-known investors were Larry Ellison, who founded Oracle Corporation, and media titan Rupert Murdoch. Her advisors and board of directors were the stuff of envy for any company. Names like Henry Kissinger, the former U.S. Secretary of State. John Mattis, the decorated and now retired U.S. Marine general. George Schultz, another revered former U.S. Secretary of State. William Perry, a former U.S. Secretary of Defense, and others. So, how could a company so well positioned for success fail? And not only fail, but for the reasons it did? One person who's given these questions more thought than most is journalist Ken Auletta. He wrote one of the most comprehensive stories about Homes for The New Yorker in December 2014. Debbie last spoke with Panos in January 2019 after meeting him in Ironman Hawaii 2018! Here is our past conversation- https://debbiepotts.net/pnoe-cardio-m... Who is Panos Papadiamantis? "I started my studies at the National Technical University of Athens, where I studied mechanical engineering. I then continued my studies at the Stanford School of Engineering, focusing on operations research and engineering management. During my stint at Stanford, I worked as a research assistant in the Center of International Security and Collaboration. There, I worked alongside Siegfried Hecker, former director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and William Perry, former Minster of Defence of the United States, in conducting research and risk analysis on nuclear technology and its implications on national security. Following my studies at Stanford, I worked as a product manager in IT infrastructure companies in Silicon Valley while always wanting to start my own company. Hence, when my cofounder and friend approached me with the idea of developing an affordable breath analysis device to analyze human metabolism with clinical precision, I jumped on board. As an engineer on paper and at heart, I was always fascinated by analyzing and understanding systems. Building PNOĒ exposed me to the most fascinating, uncharted, and misunderstood one, the human body. At PNOĒ, my colleagues and I have analyzed more than 100,000 metabolic profiles and helped more than 40,000 achieve better health and performance through metabolic-based recommendations founded on their metabolic profiles and recommendations supported by more than 1,000 peer-reviewed articles. PNOĒ is trusted by 3,000+ health professionals, world-class athletes such as Russel Wilson (NFL champion), Emma Raducanu (US Open champion), and Annie Thorisdottir (Crossfit Games champion), 100+ research centers and universities including MIT, UCLA, and Columbia University, as well as leading brands including Inbody and Spartan Racing." We chat about all things metabolic testing at rest and exercise... What does it mean to have a personalized program? How can breath analysis inform the main pillars of personalized programming  How can breath reveal fuel usage and how can it help me become more fat efficient? How to test resting test- RMR - what do you find out? How does this help someone burn fat/lose weight? How do we test exercise metabolism- how to find fat burning, cross over and speed AT zones? After you finish your prison sentence and pay your debt to society, you should be eligible for work, right? Not exactly. If you want to work in a field where a license is required, you'll likely hit a brick wall, as many licenses are not available to felony offenders. On top of that is the matter of company policy. EPISODE SUMMARY In professional sports, we have experienced a wide spectrum of clearly memorable nicknames. For example, in baseball, we instantly recognize nicknames like the Babe, Mick, Yogi, and Moose. Moose? Of course, that would be “Moose” Skowron who played for the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox among other teams. But what about pro football? As with baseball, we can often mention one word and it will translate into an image of a well-known player. Try this one: the Refrigerator! We can easily visualize William Perry, the sterling, and rather large, lineman for the Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears in the 1980s. The Refrigerator was known for his immoveable status in the center of the Bears' defensive line and he also scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl XX victory over the Patriots in January of 1986. So where did Perry earn his infamous nickname? Apparently, while he was a student at Clemson in 1981 Perry was taking his laundry down to the washing machine. When another student had difficulty sliding into the elevator with Perry, the student said: "Man, you're about as big as a refrigerator." The name stuck! Read the entire episode blog post and check out some other cool info regarding this https://sportshistorynetwork.com/football/nfl/best-football-nicknames-of-early-chicago-players (episode here). WHEN FOOTBALL WAS FOOTBALL BACKGROUND Each episode takes the listener back to the very early days of the National Football League. Author Joe Ziemba will share a forgotten or lost story from one of the NFL's two oldest teams: The Bears and the Cardinals. Team championships, individual exploits, or long-buried items of interest from the earliest years of the NFL will be dusted off and resurrected for the listener. Not for the football faint-of-heart since these programs will document when the struggling Bears nearly went out of business or when Cardinals' players earned $15 a game and were proud of it! With the very exciting addition of coveted transfer Chris Gray, the outlook for UNC Lacrosse in 2020 was good, and they proved the hype was real by starting the season 7-0. Their offense jumped from 12 goals per game in 2019 to 17+ goals per game in 2020's shortened season. Good news, they return almost everyone on the offensive side of the ball. Bad news, the questions about the depth of their defense remain, and that could hurt the Heels if they don't figure that side of the ball out in 2021. Granted, they didn't get a chance to prove themselves defensively in 2020 as they never made it to the ACC portion of their schedule. But any true lacrosse fans know that's the only thing anyone can doubt about this team, because they are stacked all over the field. Offensive production returning for North Carolina, Chris Gray, Nicky Solomon, Alex Trippi, William Perry, Tanner Cook, Justin Anderson, and the list goes on. Caton Johnson and Will Bowen will anchor the defense and a plethora of other solid returns give Tarheel fans a lot of reasons to be optimistic at their chances of making it to Memorial Day Weekend. They discuss the history of nuclear weapons, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the present threat of accidental nuclear war, nuclear terrorism, unilateral disarmament, the psychology of deterrence, tactical nuclear weapons, cybersecurity, details of command and control, nuclear proliferation, the steps we could take toward safety, strategic missile defense, nuclear winter, and other topics. William J. Perry served as the U.S. Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering in the Carter administration and then as the 19th U.S. Secretary of Defense in the Clinton administration. He oversaw the development of the strategic nuclear systems that are currently in our arsenal. His new offset strategy ushered in the age of stealth, smart weapons, GPS, and technologies that changed the face of modern warfare. In 2015, he founded the William J. Perry Project, outlining his vision of a world free from nuclear weapons, and educating the public on the urgent but practical steps that could be taken to reduce nuclear dangers. Dr. Perry has now co-authored a new book—THE BUTTON: The New Nuclear Arms Race and Presidential Power from Truman to Trump—which recounts the terrifying history of nuclear launch authority, with firsthand testimonies from the front lines of our nation’s nuclear history. He is the Michael and Barbara Berberian Professor (emeritus) at Stanford University. At 92 years old, he continues to travel the world in pursuit of his goal of reducing the threat from nuclear weapons. Lisa Perry is the Communications Director for The William J. Perry Project. The granddaughter of Secretary Perry, she has dedicated her career to sounding the alarm about the modern threat of nuclear weapons for the post cold war generations. Lisa is committed to empowering the public by breaking down the complex issues surrounding these weapons. At the Brink is a new podcast about humanity’s most terrifying weapon and the stories of those who have shaped its history. Forget about trade friction between the U.S. and China. Now it's a global trade war. As more and more aggrieved countries jump into the game, we find ourselves in a world of retributive duties and other government actions against the ''dumping'' of goods in export markets. It's not just the U.S. fighting with China. South Africa, India, Malaysia and Taiwan have also filed grievances. And China is responding in kind. On this episode, we welcome back attorney William Perry, now with the international law firm of Harris Moure, who explains how the policies of nominal trading ''partners'' have escalated tensions and undermined global commerce. Protectionism can have serious unintended consequences on the economy, Harris argues. Action against a single imported item can end up threatening thousands of jobs in another sector, and possibly entire domestic industries. Perry also offers his view on whether the World Trade Organization is still effective and relevant.

It's supposed to be a trade dispute between the U.S. and China over solar cells. But that's not the real story. What's more interesting is the way in which the Commerce Department determines whether imports are being ''dumped'' in U.S. markets. The formula might be based on prices in countries that have little or nothing to do with the matter at hand. It all comes down to whether or not the exporting nation in question is considered a ''market economy.'' And that decision is often more political than economic in nature, according to attorney William Perry, a partner in the trial department of Dorsey Whitney. He talks about the trade tensions that are simmering below the surface of relations between the U.S. and China, and offers his view on how the system should be improved.
