This is a companion podcast to the popular weblog Stock Picks Bob's Advice. Bob is an amateur investor who has 42 years of investing experience and shares with his audience some of his current picks and his actual trading portfolio on his weblog of the same name. New to podcasting, Bob has been bl…
On tonight's podcast I discuss a recent purchase of mine, Genuine Parts (GPC) and why I think it is a reasonable addition to my own portfolio. I review the latest earnings reports, some valuation, balance sheet and free cash flow numbers, and take a look at the chart. I also read a short poem by Robert Frost, a favorite poet of mine.
Tonight's podcast resumes this series of podcasts after a rather long hiatus. I share a poem by e.e. cummings from a collection by Caroline Kennedy on her mother's favorite poems. I then discuss PetSmart (PETM), a stock that I do not currently have a position, yet a company that I have owned in the past and continue to admire for its financial results and for, I should add, my cat Rahmmy, who was Mickey when I adopted him at my local PetSmart in association with the Coulee Region Humane Society. But that is another subject entirely :). I spend a little time commenting on the current difficult environment we face in America and the world. And that is without even mentioning or discussing the horrible Deep Water Horizon spill in the Gulf Of Mexico which may well be the subject of another rant another evening! You can follow my actual portfolio on Covestor, my blog on Seeking Alpha, or visit my home blog at http://bobsadviceforstocks.tripod.com/bobsadviceforstocks.
In tonight's podcast, I read a poem by Carl Sandburg and discuss an old favorite of mine, Medtronic (MDT) a company which recently reported very strong earnings, and has strong financial fundamentals.
Meridian Bioscience (VIVO) is a favorite blog subject of mine. I discuss VIVO and also read a poem by Robert Frost, "Directive". This stock is a favorite of mine producing disease test kits and has a record of steady revenue, earnings, and free cash flow growth. They pay a solid and growing dividend and have a strong financial balance sheet.  Â
I read a poem by Marge Piercy, "To be of use", and then discuss a column today (10/5/09) from the NYDaily News.com by Peter Siris: "Dangerous info: Stock picks". While agreeing that the internet is full of schemes and talking-up stocks, I point out that my blog is about information, investment philosophy, and that I share my own holdings with you through the blog and Covestor. I have indeed recently become involved with Covestor Investment Management (http://cv.im) but I continue with the same straight forward and documented discussions that have marked this blog since starting in 2003. Exercise caution whenever listening to anyone on the web, but not all is useless.
Tonight's podcast is about an old favorite of mine ResMed (RMD), the company that sells CPAP machines/masks for sleep apnea, and I read another poem, "Departmental", by Robert Frost, a favorite poet of mine. ResMed recently reported earnings which beat expectations, they have a 5-Yr Restated record on Morningstar which is impressive, reasonable valuation, and a nice chart 'to boot'!
On tonight's podcast, I share a poem with you by Robert Frost as we all seek to hang on to stars and ideals in these stressful times. I then talk about Sysco (SYY) which closed today at $22.82 (down $(1.12) on the day)(6/15/09). I touch on the latest earnings report, the Morningstar.com '5 Yr Restated' Financials, Yahoo "Key Statistics" and a 'point & figure' chart from StockCharts.com. This is more of a GARP investment, with a 4% yield!
For the second podcast this Memorial Day 2009 Weekend, I share with you the Bio of Stephen Crane and read one of his poems, "Do Not Weep, Maiden, For War Is Kind", and a short essay, "The Colonel", by Carolyn Forche. PetSmart (PETM) recently dropped sharply on what appeared to me to be good news. Owning this stock already in my trading portfolio, instead of joining the selling mob, I chose to add to my position in light of my own assessment that the news was far better than suggested by a Goldman Sachs analyst who dropped the rating on the stock while maintaining the price target. I explain my rationale and wait for trading to resume next week.
Today's podcast includes a reading of "The Path to the White Moon" by John Ashbery, a comment on my 6th birthday blogging at "Stock Picks Bob's Advice", and a look at a recent stock I blogged about, McDonald's (MCD).
In tonight's podcast, I read three poems by Robert Frost, a favorite of mine: "The Exposed Nest", "Out, Out--", and "The Road Not Taken", and I discuss how investment strategy that allows you to shift into and out of cash and into and out of equities in response to market influences is key to successful management of investments. I credit Robert Lichello who wrote "How to Make $1,000,000 Automatically" and his AIM system, and point out how I have been managing my own portfolio in the face of this terrible bear market.
In tonight's podcast I discuss two stocks: Dolby (DLB) a stock I have blogged about previously, and Badger Meter (BMI). Both stocks reported great earnings and have solid 5-Yr records. I also read a poem, "Notice" by Steve Kowit, and discuss a recent trade in Microsoft Stock.
In tonight's podcast, I read a poem, "Filling Station" by Elizabeth Bishop, discuss WMS Industries (WMS), a stock that I hold in my trading portfolio, and talk about how a bear market has affected my own portfolio management strategy. How I now allow initial purchases in my 5 position minimum to incur a 16% loss before selling, and how I replace those minimum holdings with smaller positions and now replace new positions in the 6 to 20 position portion of my portfolio at larger size based on the other positions.
Tonight's podcast, after a long hiatus of podcasting, finds me discussing a few changes in my investment approach to deal with the terrible bear market and negative trading environment, reading a poem by T.S. Eliot, sharing a letter from Bill who writes to tell me to get back podcasting, and discussing one of my recent purchases Haemonetics (HAE), which had a great quarter, beat expectations, raised guidance, and had a solid "5-yr Restated" financials from Morningstar.com.
In this evening's podcast, I read a poem, "Adventures of Isabel" by Ogden Nash, review my Trading Portfolio as of 6/28/08, and discuss portfolio management and responding to market influences as revealed in one's own portfolio holdings. In addition, I discuss my approach of responding to market conditions by automatically shifting into and out of equities. I also comment on the controversy I generated by buying shares of Visa (V) and then selling them just two weeks later at an 8% loss.
In tonight's podcast I read a poem by Carl Sandburg, "Chicago" and examine Trimble for the third time since 2004. They reported a terrific quarter for results and I look at Morningstar.com, Yahoo "key statistics", Fidelity.com eresearch for valuation/profitability and a chart from StockCharts.com.
On tonight's podcast I touch on the topic of "no new taxes" vs. balancing our budget, read a poem by Lewis Carroll, "Jabberwocky", and talk about my latest pick on my blog, Ametek (AME). Satyam is reviewed with emphasis on the latest quarter, the Morningstar.com report, some valuation numbers, and a point & figure chart from StockCharts.com.
In tonight's podcast (a second one at that), I read a poem "AfterApple-Picking" by Robert Frost, and then go ahead and discuss my investment strategy that involves a little bit of picking of the fruit from my stocks :). This podcast summarizes how I decide when to buy a stock, when to sell a stock, and how to respond to market influences by observing your own portfolio moving back and forth from cash into equities and back again. Even my cat got into the act tonight!

In tonight's podcast I share with you a poem "Things I Didn't Know I Loved" by Nazim Hikmet a Turkish poet. On this morning's podcast I discuss strategies I employ to deal with the current market correction, read "Casey at the Bat" by Ernest Thayer, and review my experience with my Morningstar investment and how I sell shares as stocks advance, limit my losses, and listen to my portfolio to respond to market moves.
Merry Christmas! On tonight's podcast, I discuss Movado Group and read a poem by Emma Lazarus that is on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus. I don't own any shares of MOV, but like the recent quarter that beat expectations, the raised guidance, the steady Morningstar.com "5-Yr Restated" financials, the increasing dividend, stable outstanding shares, and solid balance sheet. I review these results and look at a 'point & figure' chart from StockCharts.com.
On tonight's podcast, I discuss Graham (GHM) a stock that I recently purchased shares for my own trading account. I first read "Mending Wall" by Robrt Frost, then explain my criteria for identifying stocks starting with top percentage gainers, strong latest quarter, and longer-term results. I review these findings, discuss some valuation numbers and point out the 'point and figure' chart characteristics and why I chose to break my own rules and jump in and buy some shares.
In tonight's podcast, continuing my recent tradition, I read a poem, this one by Raymnd Carver called "At Least", and then take a closer look at Garmin (GMN) which recently called off an acquisition and secured data from Navteq for an additional four years. The rest of the podcast is about Teledyne Technologies (TDY) a stock that made a strong move higher today in the face of an earnings report that beat expectations and found management raising guidance. I review the Morningstar.com report, valuation numbers, and a "Point & Figure" chart from StockCharts.com
Eric N. sent me a rather detailed letter about how I pick stocks and manage my portfolio. Instead of going over any particular stock tonight, I chose to talk a little about his letter and respond to his inquiry. I also talk a little about my selling 1/7th of my position at intervals on the upside.

***THIS IS A REPOST WITHOUT THE MISSING PORTION OF THE PODCAST....APOLOGIES!*** I came across Dick's Sporting Goods last week on the blog and wanted to do a podcast on this rapidly growing retail chain that recently announced a purchase of Golf Galaxy. In addition, I try to share my investing philosophy in response to an excellent letter from a reader about Sonoco (SON).
For tonight's podcast I take a look at a very small stock that is doing well and improving its financial situation as it moves from a losing venture to a profitable corporation with cash flow improving, and a balance sheet that looks solid.
This afternoon's podcast is about Guess (GES) a stock that moved higher Thursday on strong same-store sales growth reports.
In tonight's podcast, I touch on Guess? (GES) but spend almost all of my podcast discussing an email from a listener in Peru who inquired about my views on the stock market environment vis a vis Morningstar's views. I explain how I let my portfolio determine my response to the Stock Market both in avoiding compounding losses and looking to compound gains.
In tonight's podcast, I discuss a letter I received from a reader and also some small improvements to my blog to access entries easier. I first discussed this stock back in August, 2005, and the stock is updated with current information.
