During their latest earnings call, Zumiez delivered an informative discussion. CEO Rick Brooks started the conversation leveraging the sustained momentum in their private label business, even amid a general sales decline. As CEO Rick Brooks noted, "Our private label business is dead on ... It's a gain in absolute dollars in our business in private label... we've been leading the trend cycles that we're seeing out in the market." Zumiez accentuated signs of resilience amid the struggles experienced in the past year. The company noted a noteworthy trend towards improvement highlighted in the final quarter, with total sales incrementally improving month-by-month. In the absence of explicit financial figures, Brooks' optimism about reversing the trend to a positive direction could indicate a certain confidence in future business performance. The company's strategic priorities seemingly revolve around introducing new brands, reinvigorating product assortments, and nurturing the growth of their private label brand. These premeditated efforts have reportedly expanded Zumiez's customer base and boosted sales. Investments in training initiatives and technology have also been made to improve the customer experience in stores and digitally according to the company's statement on the earnings call. A focus on consumer trends pointed toward possible opportunities, particularly in Europe. Judging by the sales growth in specific European countries mentioned on the earning call, there seems to be potential for growth in these regions. Customers' positive reception to newly introduced private label products and brands offers affirmation of Zumiez's comprehension of their consumer base. Brooks provided insights into evolving strategies saying, "We have some brands ... working well in women's... there's also a unisex aspect to how our customer buys products... we see that throughout our business with women buying boy shoes as an example." Looking ahead, Zumiez expressed plans to concentrate on Europe to heighten their existing business productivity. In contrast, in North America, the strategy centers on closing unprofitable stores and optimizing labor. These investments aim to revitalize the assortment mix, cultivate the growth of private label brands and open new stores, as revealed on the earnings call. In conclusion, Zumiez seems to adapt and evolve in response to market trends and demands. However, the lack of specific details regarding store openings leaves room for speculation about the company's expansion strategies. It appears Zumiez is formulating a balanced strategy targeting growth and customer engagement. Nonetheless, as with any investment or business strategy, confident rhetoric should not substitute for robust analysis. Ultimately, only time will tell how these strategies and insights from the earnings call will manifest in Zumiez's performance and growth. The recent earnings call of specialty retailer, Zumiez Inc. saw stakeholders informed by CEO Rick Brooks about a minor decline in sales during the second half of the third quarter (Q3). It should be noted that this drop occurred following the bustling back-to-school period. Various highs and lows marked the retail sector's performance throughout the year - a volatility that can perhaps be ascribed to climbing inflation's toll on discretionary spending, and a greater fight for consumers' wallets. This has led to the company increasing promotions as a means to offload surplus stock, which has inadvertently introduced further challenges to the company's typical sales model. Zumiez Inc., to their credit, have coped admirably with the trials of Q3, delivering on quarterly results that have exceeded expectations, signaling potential for growth amidst the tumultuous retail climate, according to what they have shared with the investment community during the earnings call. As per their clarification during the call, the company has been taking on challenges at the forefront, making strategic adaptations to their merchandise mix, and introducing variety in the brands they offer. Armed with a diverse array of products and proprietary brands, the company aims to provide superior value to customers. Customer service has also been a top priority, with attempts being made to cater to customers on a more personalized level. Reinforcing growth strategies remains a firm commitment for Zumiez Inc., as this was stated during their earnings call. According to the information shared with investors, the company has been consistently investing in high-quality training for staff, and has adapted their performance model to accommodate the uniqueness of different trade areas. Furthermore, they have been developing more efficient partnerships with brand associates, highlighting speed, flexibility, and profit as noteworthy outcomes. Their future plans are ambitious, with global expansion in the pipeline and efforts being made towards promoting newer brands and trends. Good inventory management practices and maintaining strong finances were identified as key focus areas in their near-term strategies. Zumiez Inc.'s resilience, adaptability, and their forward-looking perspective are testament to the importance of agility and strategic planning in a changing retail landscape, as manifested based on the sentiments shared during the call. I interviewed Danny Duncan who is one of YouTube's wildest creators — but he's also one of the smartest. Years before MrBeast launched Beast Burger or Feastables and Logan Paul and KSI sold out stores with Prime, Duncan was crashing Zumiez's website and selling out Tilly's and Spencers with his popular merch line Virginity Rocks. Danny Duncan shared untold stories about his early years (like living with Chris Chann in LA, working with Jason Lee of My Name is Earl), all the businesses he's started (From 16 Handles to Good Sport), how he's been able to sell $150 million of merch, and why he's not exactly just the "bad boy" people think he is. We were also joined by his manager Stefan Toler who had a lot of amazing stories to share. This one was a long time coming and worth the wait! Whether you're a fan of farmers markets or a fan of seeing people "do it scared", this episode is for you. I loved this chat with Sarah. She shares the path one step in front of the other has taken her on and how she has surprised even herself in the process. As she says in episode, "It's better to start somewhere than go nowhere." Mic drop! Sarah studied Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute for Design & Merchandising in Southern California. She immediately jumped into the design industry at Eddie Bauer followed by Tommy Bahama, Zumiez, Kische and Brooks Sports. After 10+ years in the industry, she decided it was time to move towards smaller, more localized focus. Sarah created her original business, Mockingjay Press, with the dream of bringing desire back to small-town shopping. In this social media business, she helps bring awareness and insight to supporting small, local shops & businesses. Through curated connections in the community, she became the Snohomish Farmers Market Manager in 2015. As market manager, Sarah curates an engaging vendor mix working with local artisans, creators and farmers. Sarah handles the social media & graphic advertising for her (now 3) farmers markets, along with her growing client list in & around the greater Snohomish area. Sarah is transitioning into world domination by way of Farmers Markets now as she steps into a more over-arching role and is excited to launch Market Maven this year. I'm here for it! Oh, and Snohomish Farmers Market opens May 4th as this episode airs. Head on over between 3 and 7pm! Working as a manager for nine years at JCPenney, Tom Campion learned a critical lesson about how to succeed in retail: you have to keep close track of inventory. Tom's experience navigating the ebb and flow of style, color, and size—all without the benefit of computers—gave him the confidence to launch his own retail business, aimed at teenagers. In 1978, he and his partner Gary Haakenson opened their first store, Above the Belt, in Seattle, and soon tapped into the hot new “action sports” category and the growing popularity of surf, skateboard, and snowboard culture. Tom placed his stores in shopping malls, and created spaces where teenagers would want to hang out, by leaning into “organized chaos” as a design principle. Today, with roughly 750 stores, Zumiez is the largest action sports retailer in the world.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Chessie chats with Landon about learning to screen print via YouTube, designing a queer themed Super Bowl T-Shirt & the merits of rainbow capitalism. Ohio based Awarewolf Apparel was founded in 2015 by Landon Reed who had a vision of creating an LGBTQIA+ owned & operated clothing company inspired by street, skate & tattoo culture that broke away from the rainbow cliches. Landon worked at US skate retailer Zumiez & although he loved the style of brands such as Stüssy, Obey & Hurley he noticed there was no brand that truly represented him & so Awarewolf was born. SummaryJoining Daniel for this episode is Tracie Smith of Zumiez to discuss ways to build cross-functional relationships between the studio and other departments. As content creation shifts from being a service that is performed on a transactional basis, to a more strategic part of a businesses plan to capture market share, we need to build better relationships between the studio and external stakeholders. Key TakeawaysContent production will go from being transactional task that needs to be completed, to a more strategic part of the business. When studios are too siloed, the effect can be negative in both directions. Outside of the studio, people are unaware of what the studio does or how it impacts the business. Inside the studio, employees feel cut-off and like the work they do isn't important to the business.Your company culture plays a large part in your ability to make cross-departmental connections. The stronger and better defined a culture you have, the easier it can be to bridge communication gaps.Supporting internal creative needs for your company is a great way to get your studio involved in  helping other departments and share skills. Things like employee of the month portraits can really help build positive culture AND elevate the profile of the studio team.Hosting an open house in your studio can help build interpersonal relationships across departments that can help make meetings and future projects more efficient through more effective communication.Effective communication helps make it easier to keep goals and expectations aligned.Links & ResourcesTracey Smith on LinkedInZumiezCreditsProduced by: Creative Force - creativeforce.ioEdited by: Calvin Lanz Sound - clsound.netHosted by: Daniel Jester - danieltjester.com

In this episode, Bob Kendall stops by the studio and spills his entrepreneurial growth mindset onto the table between us. We pick up some great pieces to inspect together. Bob and I first met when I was a young salesman at a popular Lifestyle and Action sports store in our local mall. We were a sales team force to be reckoned with and always held a fluidity of present moment conversations. Bob tells us his desperately dope attempts of getting the dream job, landing it, leaving it, stopping to smell some art, opening his own business, and of course the plethora of adventures in between and after. We touch on the future of B & C shopping, small town communities, the purpose of malls and shopping. We touch on young customer service workers and lack of training, Amazon, Zumiez, style trends and we both offer some advice for anyone in the customer service industry. This man is one of the best listeners and communicators I've personally ever met. Working with and observing Bob Kendall, you'd find and observe a master at work. A master of making each person feel special. Bob has a salesmen's mind and a lion's heart. Bob and I have stood in the store and talked for hours and hours many many times. I feel blessed that my life has granted me the opportunity to rebirth those talks with my old friend and co-worker in the form of this podcast. I assure you that - If you ever stumble into the chance to meet Bob Kendall, you'll walk away with a free smile and much lighter shoulders.
