Erinnerst Du Dich an Deine Kindheit? Today's poem is by Carl August Sandburg (January 6, 1878 – July 22, 1967), an American poet, biographer, journalist, and editor. He won three Pulitzer Prizes: two for his poetry and one for his biography of Abraham Lincoln. During his lifetime, Sandburg was widely regarded as "a major figure in contemporary literature", especially for volumes of his collected verse, including Chicago Poems (1916), Cornhuskers (1918), and Smoke and Steel(1920).[2] He enjoyed "unrivaled appeal as a poet in his day, perhaps because the breadth of his experiences connected him with so many strands of American life".[3] When he died in 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson observed that "Carl Sandburg was more than the voice of America, more than the poet of its strength and genius. He was America."[4]—Bio via Wikipedia Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

As the clock ticks toward All Hallow's Eve, we'll wind down where we began in last month's episode of Breaking Walls, with the October 30th, 1957 episode of LIFE and the World on NBC. The October 14th LIFE Magazine cover featured Little Central High School in Arkansas; the October 21st cover featured American scientists plotting Sputnik's orbit; while the October 28th's cover featured Queen Elizabeth opening Canadian Parliament. This episode features a speech by poet Carl Sandburg and a rare interview with Frank Lloyd Wright, both speaking about Chicago. Both Sandberg and Wright spent significant time in Chicago. Sandburg was back in Chicago debuting a new poem about the city. His speech from the banquet by The Chicago Dynamic Committee, was recorded. Frank Lloyd Wright settled in Chicago shortly after the Great Fire of 1871. He was ninety at the time of this interview, and as passionate as ever. His Guggenheim Museum was under construction in New York, while he dreamed of a mile-high office building for Chicago. On October 29th, 1957, head of MGM, Louis B. Mayer died of leukemia. He was seventy-three. The next day, Variety Magazine carried his obituary. Although Mayer was often disliked and even feared by many, director Clarence Brown said, “he made more stars than all the rest of the producers in Hollywood put together. “He knew how to handle talent; he knew that to be successful, he had to have the most successful people in the business working for him. He was like Hearst in the newspaper business. He made an empire out of this thing.” However, both movie studios and the entertainment industry were rapidly changing. As was America. But the only way passed is through. So, forward we go, in time that is, in the next episode of Breaking Walls.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Where's the foom?, published by Fergus Fettes on April 11, 2023 on LessWrong. "The first catastrophe mechanism seriously considered seems to have been the possibility, raised in the 1940s at Los Alamos before the first atomic bomb tests, that fission or fusion bombs might ignite the atmosphere or oceans in an unstoppable chain reaction." This is not our first rodeo. We have done risk assessments before. The best reference-class examples I could find were the bomb, vacuum decay, killer strangelets, and LHC black holes (all covered in ). I was looking for a few days, but didn't complete my search, but I decided to publish this note as now Tyler Cowen is asking too: "Which is the leading attempt to publish a canonical paper on AGI risk, in a leading science journal, refereed of course. The paper should have a formal model or calibration of some sort, working toward the conclusion of showing that the relevant risk is actually fairly high. Is there any such thing?" The three papers people replied with were: - Is Power-Seeking AI an Existential Risk?- The Alignment Problem from a Deep Learning Perspective - Unsolved Problems in ML Safety Places I was looking so far:- The list of references for that paper- The references for the Muehlhauser and Salamon intelligence explosion paper- The Sandburg review of singularities and related papers (these are quite close to passing muster I think) Places I wanted to look further: Papers by Yampolsky, aka- Papers mentioned in there by Schmidhuber (haven't gotten around to this)- I haven't thoroughly reviewed Intelligence Explosion Microeconomics, maybe this is the closest thing to fulfilling the criteria? But if there is something concrete in eg. some papers by Yampolsky and Schmidhuber, why hasn't anyone fleshed it out in more detail? For all the time people spend working on 'solutions' to the alignment problem, there still seems to be a serious lack of 'descriptions' of the alignment problem. Maybe the idea is, if you found the latter you would automatically have the former? I feel like something built on top of Intelligence Explosion Microeconomics and the Orthogonality Thesis could be super useful and convincing to a lot of people. And I think people like TC are perfectly justified in questioning why it doesn't exist, for all the millions of words collectively written on this topic on LW etc. I feel like a good simple model of this would be much more useful than another ten blog posts about the pros and cons of bombing data centers. This is the kind of thing that governments and lawyers and insurance firms can sink their teeth into. Where's the foom? Edit: Forgot to mention clippy. Clippy is in many ways the most convincing of all the things I read looking for this, and whenever I find myself getting skeptical of foom I read it again. Maybe an summary of the mechanisms described in there would be a step in the right direction? A critical look at risk assessments for global catastrophes List Intelligence Explosion: Evidence and Import An Overview of Models of Technological Singularity From Seed AI to Technological Singularity via Recursively Self-Improving Software Thanks for listening. In a variation of a famous Carl Sandburg quote - Ted Cruz said “if you have the law on your side, you bang on the law. If you have the facts on your side, bang on the facts. If you have neither, you bang on the table.” Sandburg is attributed with saying “pound on the table and yell like hell.” Kyle discussed the testimony in front of the @Weaponization Committee by Michael Shellenberg and Matt Taibbi. Unserious attacks by unserious people on the Democrat side, and ongoing attempts to discredit witnesses when the facts aren't on the side of the questioners. Dir. Wray stonewalled Republicans in other hearings, and the FBI caught in more process errors in the Proud Boys trial.

For today's episode, we have Chelsea Sanburg who is a licensed mental health counselor. Together with her husband, they have accomplished what they set out to do after years of consciously creating a life that allows for a healthy work/life balance. Even though getting there wasn't always simple, it was worthwhile and along the way, they discovered that travel is a mindset and that it can be purposefully created wherever you are. And with that, today, she will share her journey and her traveling lifestyle.    Traveling and work are two of Chelsea's core values. She knew that she had to be creative and intentional in building a life that would include both, so she set out to do just that. She and her husband have spent years being intentional in the careers they've accepted and where they've lived in order to maximize travel experiences. They moved from Iowa to Florida (with some time in North Carolina and South Dakota in between) and currently spend every weekend traveling. Right now, they spend the majority of their time exploring the state of Florida because there are endless experiences there (and because they never tire of beaches!) but as traveling continues to get easier with covid, they've started expanding their travels again.   “Even if you can afford to travel, but you have a crappy mindset, you're gonna shut down when things go wrong, and things will go wrong, they will go wrong every time.”   Chelsea shares her story and her lifestyle  Allow time to be and for things to unfold The importance of having an open mindset   Connect with Chelsea: Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/suitelifesanburg/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thingstodoinflorida YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbA52pQnU6YO9v--KotEGWg   Big News!!  The Expert's Guide To Becoming A Traveling Therapist is available for purchase!
