Let's TAKE 5! In this episode, I answer the following question: "I am going to be a head coach next year and this year at my school we added a Pom team. We're struggling with it I feel like. They do all the material we do and do all of the cheers. There is no difference. No kickline, no “Pom” dances. No nothing. The coach has come off like we need to do everything together and In my new role I want to be able to set a boundary. What are normal pom/cheer games like? I can't even remember when I was in high school. Are we suppose to be next to each other at all times? Should it be okay for my girls to do something different then pom does?" Let's TAKE 5! In this episode, I respond to the following scenario: "How do you and your assistant coach divide responsibilities when there is no jv squad? I held the jv/assistant position in our program for 5 years before moving into the head coach position this past year. When I was the assistant, my head coach and I had a much more cohesive dynamic and shared vision for our program than my assistant and I seemed to have this year. (My assistant was a first year coach, and there was a lot of over and under-stepping.) Trying to make sure I can provide my assistant with a clear list of expectations and duties so that things go smoother next season." Let's TAKE 5! In this episode, I respond to the following scenario: "I'm a fairly new HS assistant coach and this will be my first normal cheer season. The head coach has me run practice sometimes, so I'm wondering how I can be more confident in coaching my girls when they are stunting and I'm alone with them? I'm terrified someone is going to get injured on my watch. I cheered in high school and part of college, but the squad I coach is way more advanced than the squads I cheered on. I feel inadequate and insecure when it comes to stunting. Any tips or resources to gain confidence are most welcome!" This is my first year as a Varsity head coach and will be my first time doing tryouts. Here are my options. What do you all do? We have a small school with multi sport athletes. TIA Option 1: Hold a two day tryout clinic and an official tryout afterwards. Set a certain score and if you don't make that score you're not on the team, no exceptions even if you've cheered for years. Option 2: Do not hold a tryout in April/May. Let's TAKE 5! In this episode, I respond to the following scenario: "Looking for some advice… my team's practices last week went amazing and then all of a sudden… I get an email from one of my flyers that she is having a “family emergency” Thursday night at 9:30 pm. I was a bit skeptical, but the show must go on. I readjust my whole routine Friday before the game, but my captains came to me letting me know that they were confused about the girl's absence as well. Turns out today that she wasn't having a family emergency (as per my captains) and her parents held her out of the game because she has “bad grades.” I'm kind of at a loss for what to do, but it seems like I can't count on this kid, which is frustrating because she is one of my better flyers. I know school comes first, and I'd be happy to help her out if needed, but this has messed up the entire routine and stressed everyone else out. What would you do if you were me?"
