Tony is an archivist, father, husband, and a lost soul of rock and roll. When he is not writing, he is spending time with his family or enjoying a good meal. Tony has been featured as a Yuba County Five case expert on the Mopac Audio podcast Yuba County Five and was also featured as a case expert on the Motor Trend TV show Auto/Biography: Cold Case. The book explores the bizarre and tragic 1978 disappearance of Ted Weiher, Jack Madruga, Bill Sterling, Jackie Huett, and Gary Mathias in the Plumas National Forest in Northern California. Four of these men had intellectual disabilities while one was diagnosed with schizophrenia. On Friday, February 24, 1978, they left the Yuba County, California area in Madruga's 1969 Mercury Montego to attend a basketball game in Chico, California. Four days later the car they were traveling in was found abandoned on a snow-covered road in the mountains of the Plumas National Forest, some 75 miles in the wrong direction from home.Four jurisdictions of law enforcement would investigate and search for the missing men. Psychics were brought in, and there were strange reports of sightings of the five from numerous people. Come along for the strange tale of 5 men who disappeared mysteriously. All of our wonderful links can be found here on the linktree: https://linktr.ee/allts The Yuba County 5 case is a mysterious and tragic event that occurred in February 1978, involving five young men from Yuba City, California. The men—Jack Madruga, Jackie Huett, Ted Weiher, Bill Sterling, and Gary Mathias—went missing after a basketball game, and their disappearance has puzzled investigators for decades due to its strange and inexplicable circumstances. Here's a detailed breakdown of the case: The Disappearance On February 24, 1978, the five men attended a college basketball game at California State University, Chico. After the game, they stopped at a convenience store to buy snacks and drinks. This was the last confirmed sighting of the group together. The Search and Discovery For months, there was no trace of the men, despite extensive search efforts. However, on June 4, 1978, a group of motorcyclists discovered a car belonging to Jack Madruga in a remote area of Plumas National Forest, nearly 70 miles from Chico and far off their expected route home. The car was stuck in the snow, but it was in working order, and it appeared that the men had left it voluntarily. The Bodies Ted Weiher's Body: On June 4, 1978, Ted Weiher's body was found in a deserted Forest Service trailer 19.4 miles from the car. He had died of exposure and starvation, despite there being canned food in the trailer. His feet were badly frostbitten, and he had lost nearly half his body weight. Other Bodies: Over the next few days, the remains of Jackie Huett and Bill Sterling were found not far from the trailer, and their bodies also indicated that they had succumbed to the elements. Jack Madruga's body was found between the trailer and the car, indicating he likely died trying to reach help. Gary Mathias's remains have never been found, although his shoes were discovered in the trailer, suggesting he might have also died nearby or moved to another location. The Mysteries Several perplexing elements make the Yuba County 5 case particularly mysterious: The Location: The area where the car and bodies were found was remote, rugged, and not on the men's planned route. It's unclear why they would have driven there. Condition of the Car: The car was found abandoned with fuel in the tank, and there was no apparent mechanical failure. It appeared to have been abandoned because it was stuck in snow, yet it was not clear why the men did not try to walk back to civilization. Survival Choices: Despite having access to food and heating materials in the trailer, Weiher did not use them effectively, leading to speculation about his state of mind or possible coercion. Gary Mathias: Mathias had a history of mental health issues and was on medication, but his fate remains unknown. His absence and the lack of concrete clues about his whereabouts add to the mystery. Theories Various theories have been proposed over the years: Disorientation and Panic: Some suggest that the men became lost and panicked in the snow, leading them to abandon the car and seek shelter in the trailer. Foul Play: There are suspicions of foul play or external intervention that led them to the remote area and resulted in their deaths. Psychological Factors: Considering Mathias's mental health issues, there is speculation that a psychological crisis might have influenced their decisions and behaviors. Conclusion The Yuba County 5 case remains one of the most baffling and tragic unsolved mysteries. Despite numerous investigations and public interest, the exact circumstances that led to the men's disappearance and deaths are still unknown, leaving many questions unanswered.

5 young men from Yuba City, affectionately known as "The boys" by their family, went to a basketball game in Chico, California on February 24, 1978. This was the last anyone would ever see them again. Their vehicle was found on a mountain road in Plumas National Park, some 70 miles from Chico and not on the road home to Yuba City. Sadly, 3 of the 5 guys bodies were located in the forest. The 4th, Ted Weiher, was located in an encampment trailer approx 20 miles from where the vehicle was located. Despite having food for over a year in the trailer, it was ruled that Ted had been in the trailer for about 8 weeks before succumbing to hypothermia and starvation. The 5th man, Gary Mathias, has never been located. Listen to the facts and our theories on what is known as "American Dyatlov Pass"

The Yuba County Five were young men from Yuba City, California, all with mild mental or psychiatric issues, who attended a college basketball game at California State University, Chico, in 1978. Afterwards, they stopped at a local market for snacks and drinks. Four of them—Bill Sterling, Jack Huett, Ted Weiher, and Jack Madruga, were later found dead; the fifth, Gary Mathias, has never been seen again...he's the 5th wheel... In February of 1978, an unsolved incident occurred to five young men from Yuba County that is still being investigated by the area police today. The five men are known collectively as the Yuba County Five, and the incident itself is referred to as the American Dyatlov Pass. On February 24, 1978, Gary Mathias, Jack Huett, William Sterling, Ted Weiher and Jack Madruga left a college basketball game at 10 PM with the intention of driving home to get ready for their own league basketball game the next day. Unfortunately, none of the men arrived at their destination. The car they were driving was found two days after a search was launched, but because of a winter storm hitting the area shortly after, the authorities had to postpone the search. On June 4, 1978, a group of motorcyclists happened upon a ranger cabin that was about twenty miles from the abandoned car, where they discovered the emaciated body of Ted Weiher. The remains of 3 of the other men were discovered shortly after in the surrounding area, but the body of Gary Mathias was never found. There are a lot of questions and very few answers surrounding the strange and mysterious disappearance and deaths of these young men. What made them drive on a road far off from the route they should've taken? Why would they exit a perfectly working car and walk through the snow and woods to nowhere? Join us on episode 77 to hear more about this unsolved mystery! ###Follow Us:https://www.paranormalpunchers.comhttps://twitter.com/ppunchershttps://instagram.com/paranormalpunchershttps://www.facebook.com/paranormalpunchers###Support the Show:https://www.teepublic.com/stores/paranormal-punchershttp://paranormalpunchers.storenvy.comhttps://www.patreon.com/paranormalpunchers

40 some years ago 5 men went missing. 4 were discovered dead in mysterious circumstances. 1 was never found. It's been called the American Dyatlov Pass. We tell the story and do our best to give our take. But this is truly a weird one.
On the night of the 24th of February, 1978, a group of five young men attended a college basketball game at California State University. The group of men had been anticipating their Special Olympic basketball tournament that was scheduled for the very next night in Sacramento, which they had been looking forward to for months. After the game, they traveled 70 miles in the opposite direction for no apparent reason, and 4 of the men were found dead months later. One of the men is still missing to this day.WTF Moments:Over 30 miles outside of Oroville and 70 miles from Chico, Jack Madruga's car came to rest empty on a desolate road in the High Sierras, stopping just on the snow line at 4,400 feet in elevation. The car’s underside was completely undamaged. Investigators concluded that the driver had either used astonishing care and precision, or else the knew the road extremely well – Jack, hated the cold, and according to his parents, would never drive it in the snow or unfamiliar territory. In fact, none of the boys aside from Mathias, cared for camping or other outdoor activities. That same night, a man named Joseph Shones was driving along the same route and begin to have a f*cking heart attack. He laid down on his backseat and kept his car running to keep warm - After several hours, the gas ran out and he thought he had seen a group of men and a woman with a baby, walking in the light of another vehicle’s headlights. Shone's claimed he called out for help and the lights disappeared and everything had gone quiet. Once he had rested for some time, he walked eight miles down to get help at a place he had been drinking at earlier in the day called Mountain House, passing a strange abandoned blue-green colored car along the way.Ted Weiher’s body was discovered first in an abandoned cabin. He was laying on a bed with eight sheets wrapped around him, including his head. The autopsy showed that he had died of a combination of starvation and hypothermia. He had lost nearly half his body weight, and the growth of his beard suggested he had lived as long as 13 weeks from when he had last shaved. Ted’s autopsy showed that Ted died of hypothermia and starvation, despite there being a propane tank and over a years’ worth of canned food in and near the trailer. The cans of food required a P-38 can-opener, a very specific can-opener to the military and army - Gary Mathias and Jack Madruga were the only ones in the group with military experience. In the trailer, there was a gold watch found on a side table that did not belong to anyone in the group.Jack Madruga and Bill Sterling’s body were found on opposite sides of the road 11.4 miles from where the car had been. The former's body had been partially consumed by scavenging animals; only bones remained of the latter, scattered over a small area. Two days after the discovery of Jack and Bill, as part of one of the other search parties, Jack Huett's father insisted on helping the police in the search, since his son was the last 2 that still hadn’t been found. During the search he discovered his son’s blue jean jacket in the snow and when he ran to pick it up, a back bone fell out of the jacket. His shoes and jeans nearby helped identify the body. Yikes.Gary Mathias was never found. He has been missing for over 41 years, and this case remains unsolved to this day.Check out our website!Contact us!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/join/cocktailsandconspiracies?)

February 24, 1978. Chico, California. After embarking on a road trip to attend a basketball game, five mentally disabled young men - 24-year old Jackie Huett, 29-year old Bill Sterling, 30-year old Jack Madruga, 32-year old Ted Weiher, and 25-year old Gary Mathias - begin the 50-mile drive back to their homes in Yuba County, but never arrive. Four days later, their abandoned car is found in some snow on an isolated mountain road, but the five men, a.k.a. “The Yuba County Five”, have gone missing. After the spring thaw hits, the remains of four of the victims are discovered at different locations throughout the area, but Gary Mathias is never found. While the cause of death is determined to be exposure, there are many unanswered questions. Why did they drive over 35 miles off the highway to such an isolated location? What prompted them to abandon their vehicle? Did an eyewitness see other people with the five men on the road that night? This week’s episode about the Yuba County Five is one of the most bizarre mysteries we’ve ever covered, and is considered by some to be an American version of the infamous Dyatlov Pass incident.
