On Christmas Eve 1945 in the quiet little town of Fayetteville West Virginia, Jennie Sodder awoke just after one in the morning to find her little farm house filled with smoke, flames licking the walls of her husband's office. She rushed to wake and alert her husband and 9 children. It was clear that they needed to escape quickly. Once out on the lawn Jennie saw her husband, two daughters and two son's, which left 5 children in the house, trapped, or so they thought. No trace of those five children has been found to this very day. In the seventy nine years since five of the ten Sodder children disappeared during the fire that destroyed their home, no one can say for sure what happened to them and it has driven devoted true crime fans into the deepest rabbit holes.   Click To Learn More Article 1 Article 2 Local West Virginia Coverage Smithsonian Article                 WWBD Merch Buy your WWBD swag here!  Join the Conversation

At around 1:00 am on December 25, 1945, Jennie Sodder woke up to smoke pouring into her bedroom. She woke up her husband, George, and they started evacuating the house of their nine children. By the time the fire took over the Sodder residence, only Jennie, George, and four of their children made it outside safely. George and two of his sons frantically tried to get into the house to save the remaining children, but they couldn't. When George went to fill up a bucket with water to start extinguishing the flames, the water was frozen, when he went to grab their ladder to get his children from the top story, the ladder was missing; when he went to drive his trucks to the second story window, neither would start despite having worked just the day before. And when they tried to call the fire department for help, no one responded for hours. The only thing the family could do was watch as their home burned to the ground. Hours later, after the smoldering ashes were put out, a group of people began searching for the children's remains, but nothing was found. Not a single bone was found in the ashes. The fire was quickly ruled an accident, and investigators told the family the children's bodies had burned up completely in the fire, leaving nothing of them behind, not even their bones. But between the mishaps, while trying to put out the fire, threats made against the family before the fire, and the strange behavior of authorities throughout the investigation, Jennie and George Sodder refused to believe five of their children were killed in the home. They were convinced their children didn't die in the fire, and they spent the rest of their lives trying to prove it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Suddenly, the home became engulfed in flames - and the fire rapidly spread. George, Jennie and four of the nine Sodder children frantically fled the house to the streets below, but the other five children were allegedly trapped - and tragically perished - in the attic. The only thing the family could do was watch as their burned to the ground.

Christmas Eve, 1945 was a night that changed the Sodder family forever. Sometime after 1 AM, a fire broke out on the first floor of their Fayetteville, West Virginia home. George and Jennie Sodder were able to get their four kids, sleeping on the first floor, out of the house safely. However, the fire spread so quickly that George could not get up to the five kids sleeping on the second floor The investigation into the fire said the fire was caused by faulty wire and the five Sodder children died. This is where the story gets interesting. No remains of the children were ever found in the burnt rubble. George and Jennie Sodder were convinced their children did not die in the fire. If they didn't pass away in the fire, what happened to them? This is the question Phil and Travis will cover. George and Jennie Sodder lived in Fayetteville, West Virginia, with their 10 children (with one son away in the military). On the night before Christmas in 1945, the family goes to sleep but a fire breaks out around 1AM. Four of the children escape with their parents, but the other five children are nowhere to be found. The fire destroys the house but an investigation finds no traces of the missing children; their "deaths" are ruled due to fire or suffocation. Decades go by and George and Jennie continued to search for their missing children, believing them to have been kidnapped rather than perishing in the fire. Hello, Lovelies! Christmas morning, 1945, Jennie Sodder was awoken by a loud bang. After going back to sleep, she woke smelling smoke and promptly alerted her husband, George, and eldest children. After making it out of the house with the youngest, Sylvia, they realized the younger five children (Martha, Betty, Jennie, Maurice, and Louise) weren't outside. After not being able to find the ladder that was always kept by the side of the house and not being able to start the trucks, the family didn't have an option but wait hours for the firefighters to arrive. After not finding remains, the house was bulldozed and a garden was planted. But... the parents got suspicious after the police and firefighters couldn't find anything. Theories ranging from the Italian Mafia to a less than honorable father. What's our opinion? Well, Rebecca and Ashley are on the same page and by the end of this episode Tiffany is confused. Wait, wasn't this her episode? Anyway... join us this week as we dissect this case and come up with our own theories. On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we talk about a listener-voted favorite, the mysterious disappearance of the Sodder Family. On Christmas Eve of 1945, an odd fire raged through the Sodder home, supposedly killing five of the 10 Sodder children. However, the circumstances around the fire are pretty baffling, and the lack of evidence and bodies suggest the kids weren’t actually in the house in the fire. But if that was the case, where did they go, and why did nobody ever find them? Good question! George and Jennie Sodder were both first generation Italian immigrants who came through Ellis Island and settled in Fayetteville, West Virginia. It was a town with a large Italian population, half of whom hated George Sodder for his stance against Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. He got in regular arguments with the locals about this, and it got so heated that an insurance salesman once said that his house would one day go up in smoke, and his children would be destroyed! Well, turns out that guy was right. On Christmas eve, a strange series of events took place that may or may not have put the kids in their beds up in the attic as they were supposed to be. At 12:30 AM, an odd phone call came in. At 1:00, there were noises on the roof (those ain’t reindeer!), and by 1:30 George’s office and the roof were on fire. The couple ushered four of their children out of the house, but the flames were too intense for them to return for the remaining 5. And then came the series of “No’s”. The ladder that was always against the house (and could save the kids) was gone. The water barrels were all frozen solid. The phone line was cut. The neighbors couldn’t reach anyone on the phone to get help. The trucks wouldn’t start. The Cosmic Muffin really dropped his hammer. Or did he? Investigations started to reveal mysteries and odd happenings. The phone line wasn’t dead from the fire but was cut. A burglar was caught on the premises but released for no good reason. There were no children screaming in the fire. It took the fire department 7 hours to get on the scene. And most importantly, there were no bodies or bones found after the fire died. So, were the kids inside, and if so, what happened to their bones? Why did George go against the will of the fire department and bury the Sodder house under five feet of dirt just four days after the fire? What did the guy who threatened the Sodders have to do with the findings of the fire department? Did this all have to do with the mob? How long does it take Brad, Brent, and Dave to descend into talk about the Mario Brothers? Listen, laugh, learn.

One of the most enduring historical mysteries of the 20th century is of the missing Sodder children. After a fire in the family home on Christmas Eve of 1945, George and Jennie escaped with four of their children, however five more never made it out of the house. At first, it was assumed that they died in an accidental fire, but a series of strange clues aroused their suspicions that something more sinister happened to them and their home instead. I'm joined by Jennie Henthorn, granddaughter of George and Jennie Sodder, who gives the family's perspective, details and possible theories about the reason for the fire, and the potential fate of her aunts and uncles.  Learn more about your ad choices. Boy, is this story a doozy. The Mysterious Deaths of the Sodder Children on Christmas Eve, 1945, is one of the most bizarre cases you'll ever hear of, guaranteed. At first, it seems to be a pretty straightforward case. A house fire in Fayetteville, West Virginia ends with the unfortunate deaths of five children. However, if you only dig a little bit further -- unintended pun -- you'll come up with the facts in a story that just never can be squared up with reality.   Here are the Outline Show Notes for this Ep: Christmas Eve, 1945 Fayetteville, WV There were 10 Sodder children. Sodder was Italian-American. Fayetteville had a vibrant Italian-American population. TEN CHILDREN. George and Jennie -- Parents Maurice, 14 Martha, 12 Louis, 9 Jennie, 8 Bettie, 5 Around 1AM a fire broke out. George and Jennie and four children escaped (one was off in the war) House layout: the parents lived downstairs; the kids lived upstairs.   The ladder was missing. Neither of the two vehicles would start. The ‘phone tree’ that the fire department used was slow, and they didn’t show until 8AM. By that time, the Sodder house was ash and rubble. A search of the Sodder homestead on Christmas Day revealed no remains of any of the five children. The fire was attributed to faulty wiring. After four days of intense grief, George Sodder covered the house / basement over, even though he was told to leave it for an investigation. This is where things start to get weird. An itinerant worker, a few months before, claimed that the house would catch fire. Some time later, a man tried to sell the family life insurance and became incensed when George didn’t take. He reportedly told them that their house would burn down. “Your goddamn house is going up in smoke,” he warned, “and your children are going to be destroyed. You are going to be paid for the dirty remarks you have been making about Mussolini.”   Death certificates were issued on December 30, 1945. The Sodders became convinced their kids weren’t in the house. Jennie Sodder soon became confused about the circumstances of the fire. No bones? She began doing her own experiments. A crematorium employee told her bones would remain after burning for 2K degrees for 2 hours. The wires, a phone co. employee told them, had been cut not burned. Contradicts the narrative. Recalled a thud on the roof just before the fire. People reported seeing the kids be carried away the night of the fire.   In 1947, the Sodders hired a Private Investigator named CC Tinsley, who found out that -- get this -- the insurance salesman who had threatened George was a member of the coroner’s jury that deemed the fire an accident.   It continues to get bizarre. FJ Morris, the fire chief of Fayettville, claimed to have found no remains, but a rumor circulated that he’d found a heart in the ashes that he kept in a dynamite box, which he buried at the site. It. Gets. Weirder. The family convinced him to show them the spot. They dug up the box and had it analyzed. Turns out, it wasn’t even a heart. It was a beef liver, a liver, I might add, that the chief admitted to burying himself, supposedly to put the family at ease.   The family becomes frantic, searching for any answers at all. They eventually brought in a pathologist from DC, who managed to find some bones in the scene.   When analyzed, however, the bones turned out NOT to be from any of the children. They had come from someone else altogether, someone older. So NO bones from the kids were found. The bones that were found had not been exposed to fire at all, so no dice.   Fast forward twenty years. The Sodders receive a photograph in 1968 that looked very much like their Louis. It had a cryptic message on the back, and they sent a PI to check it out, but never heard from him again.   George died shortly after and Jennie in 1989. The last surviving child, Sylvia, refuses to believe they were in the fire.   Theme: "Ten" by DJ Sun You can find my books on Amazon, as well.
