On Christmas Eve 1945 in the quiet little town of Fayetteville West Virginia, Jennie Sodder awoke just after one in the morning to find her little farm house filled with smoke, flames licking the walls of her husband's office. She rushed to wake and alert her husband and 9 children. It was clear that they needed to escape quickly. Once out on the lawn Jennie saw her husband, two daughters and two son's, which left 5 children in the house, trapped, or so they thought. No trace of those five children has been found to this very day. In the seventy nine years since five of the ten Sodder children disappeared during the fire that destroyed their home, no one can say for sure what happened to them and it has driven devoted true crime fans into the deepest rabbit holes. Tom and Simon kick off with a discussion about Simon's upcoming trip to Australia for Crime Time Inc., emphasizing the importance of exemplary conduct and noting the organization's tight expense policies. They delve into famous Australian cases, including the legendary outlaw Ned Kelly. The conversation then shifts to a series of topical crimes, particularly those around Christmas time, as noted by their deep dive team. Paul Logan's unsolved murder is highlighted, with Tom discussing the importance of preserving evidence and keeping cold cases 'warm' for potential breakthroughs. They touch on infamous cases like the Sodder children and JonBenét Ramsey, critiquing poor initial crime scene management and exploring potential theories behind the incidents. The pair also reflect on Amelia Earhart's mysterious disappearance and the influence of conspiracy theories, driven by social media. The podcast transitions to a broader analysis of crime scene investigations, the importance of immediate actions by first responders, and conspiracy theories' propensity to thrive in the absence of definitive answers. Notably, Tom praises Police Scotland's Homicide Review Board for their methodical and thorough approach to solving cold cases. The episode also teases a future live show at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow and mentions their special guest, former crime reporter Jane Hamilton, who will bring a unique perspective as a journalist. This episode offers a blend of case analysis, procedural critique, and personal anecdotes, providing listeners with insight into the investigative process and the challenges faced in high-profile crime inquiries.00:00 Introduction and Trip Preparations00:21 Professional Conduct and Expense Warnings01:40 Famous Australian Cases01:57 Christmas Crimes and Cold Cases04:44 The Paul Logan Case06:56 Cold Case Investigations11:50 Forensic Evidence and Lockhart's Exchange Theory16:53 The Sodder Children Disappearance23:06 Violence in Policing26:11 The Importance of Searching Prisoners27:36 Public Inquiry into Sheku Bayoh's Death29:49 Botched Crime Scenes: Jon Benét Ramsey Case35:57 The Maurin Murders: A Complex Case42:20 Amelia Earhart: The Mystery of Her Disappearance46:16 Conspiracy Theories and Social Media48:57 Upcoming Live Show Details Hosted on Acast. At around 1:00 am on December 25, 1945, Jennie Sodder woke up to smoke pouring into her bedroom. She woke up her husband, George, and they started evacuating the house of their nine children. By the time the fire took over the Sodder residence, only Jennie, George, and four of their children made it outside safely. George and two of his sons frantically tried to get into the house to save the remaining children, but they couldn't. When George went to fill up a bucket with water to start extinguishing the flames, the water was frozen, when he went to grab their ladder to get his children from the top story, the ladder was missing; when he went to drive his trucks to the second story window, neither would start despite having worked just the day before. And when they tried to call the fire department for help, no one responded for hours. The only thing the family could do was watch as their home burned to the ground. Hours later, after the smoldering ashes were put out, a group of people began searching for the children's remains, but nothing was found. Not a single bone was found in the ashes. The fire was quickly ruled an accident, and investigators told the family the children's bodies had burned up completely in the fire, leaving nothing of them behind, not even their bones. But between the mishaps, while trying to put out the fire, threats made against the family before the fire, and the strange behavior of authorities throughout the investigation, Jennie and George Sodder refused to believe five of their children were killed in the home. They were convinced their children didn't die in the fire, and they spent the rest of their lives trying to prove it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The fire that occurred at the Sodder home that night was the key to the mystery, but whether it was a vanishing, a kidnapping, or a mass murder has never been determined. *** Plus, even though a young man was tried, convicted, and died in prison for the murder – along with two others – there are many who believe that Suzanne Degnan's murder was never actually solved. Over the years, several theories have emerged, including that the children perished in the fire, were stolen and sold on the black market, and more.Tune in to this episode to learn more!Email us at: abouttime4tc@gmail.comFollow us on IG: about.time.for.true.crime.podLinktreeDon't forget to rate, follow, download, and tell a friend!Sources:Morbid Episode 10: The Sodder Children… Where the hell are they?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsYTMvP66hAhttps://www.register-herald.com/news/sodder-mystery-holds-national-appeal-continues-to-baffle-community/article_2c6a06ad-e788-5e1b-a3cf-6e6fe65061f8.htmlhttps://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/what-happened-sodder-children-siblings-who-went-up-in-smoke-west-virginia-house-fire-172429802/https://www.huffpost.com/entry/sodder-children-disappearance-unsolved-mystery_n_6574961ae4b09724b4345a46https://www.utdailybeacon.com/opinion/columns/killer-conversations-the-disappearance-of-the-sodder-children-was-not-an-accident/article_8d3edfe6-6bc4-11eb-b20e-6b2282258bf9.htmlhttps://the-line-up.com/sodder-children-disappearance-1945https://www.npr.org/2005/12/23/5067563/mystery-of-missing-children-haunts-w-va-townhttps://www.findagrave.com/memorial/18304176/jennie-sodderhttps://www.history.com/topics/world-war-iihttps://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/benito-mussolini-1#:~:text=Benito%20Mussolini%20was%20an%20Italian,the%20Nazi%20Party%20in%20Germany.

Christmas Eve, almost 80 years ago, in West Virginia a family suffered a terrible tragedy when a mysterious fire destroyed their home. Most of the family escaped except for five of the nine children. Believing they had perished, by the time the fire department made it there Christmas morning they discovered the more unthinkable: no bodies or bones of the five children were found. Did the children escape, were they kidnapped, trafficked or worse, murdered sometime later? Tonight we discuss that and more in the case of the missing Sodder children. What happened to the Sodder children who went missing one Christmas Eve night as the family's house went up in flames? Their remains were never found, and this case has gone on to be one of the biggest unsolved mysteries in history. Find out everything you need to know right here. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theinfographicsshow/message
One of the most haunting mysteries to ever occur in West Virginia – and perhaps even in America – began during the predawn hours of December 25, 1945. And that may be the reason that Suzanne's spirit has never rested in peace.
