For GAAD (Global Accessibility Awareness Day) 2025 (Thursday 15 May 2025) we are going to focus on access to heritage for blind and partially sighted people as RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined by Rachael Osmotherley, Visitor Journey Development Manager for Access, Experiences and Partnerships at the national Trust to highlight the great accessAble Guides for over 1,000 national Trust locations. Rachael began by telling Toby about how the project came about, an overview of what sort of access information around the Trust's locations and properties feature in the AccessAble Guides and especially information for blind and partially sighted visitors. The national Trust AccessAble Guides can be found by either visiting the accessAble website - https://www.accessable.co.uk Or by visiting the access for Everyone pages of the national Trust website - https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/who-we-are/about-us/access-for-everyone (Image shows RNIB logo. Part 1Stuart Mabbutt can recall the first time he engaged with the natural world and wanted to know more. He was in primary school, came across a dead magpie, and wondered why someone had ringed it. His teacher, meanwhile, was trying to persuade Stuart to leave it alone. And so began a lifelong involvement, not only in nature, but in being something of a contrarian. If you've heard of Stuart, it's likely to be through his podcast or Wildman Environmental Learning. His sensory nature workshops enable people to connect with the natural world, sometimes an unlikely beginning leads to a life revelation. And when he's not doing that, Stuart is a wildlife sound recordist and producer, an author, public speaker, radio host and a wildlife gardening consultant. After years helping other people find themselves through the great outdoors, a decline in Stuart's health and a need to use a wheelchair prompted him to lead the Oxfordshire campaign The Genuine Disabled Countryside Access Task Force. His YouTube videos are eye-opening, highlighting the issues encountered by people with different disabilities. All Access Life is a nonprofit that showcases the latest trends and movements in adaptive products and assistive technologies on their website allaccesslife.org. They share about how they met when Daniel was Bradleys Aide in high school (Bradley has nonverbal Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy), how they came to decide to create a nonprofit together, and how they developed their mission to share information about adaptive products. They also discuss Bradley's AAC journey and how the technology has progressed from the switches Bradley used as a teenager to his current eye tracking he uses on his TD Pilot device. Before the interview, Rachel shares about a family who had a very strong emotional reaction to having their child's voice changed from a child's voice to a teenager's voice, and why we need to include the family and give lots of advance warning if we want to make a change to voice output for maturity purposes. The National Trust who protect and look after hundreds of historic buildings, gardens and precious collections, miles of coastline, woodlands, and the countryside, who have and continue to provide access for blind and partially sighted people have just launched their programme for 2024 which includes many exciting projects around access too. In what will be the first of a number of interviews and features focusing on the National Trust's access offer for blind and partially sighted people RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey caught up with Dr Heather Smith, Access and Equality Specialist at the National Trust for an introduction to the Trust and to find out more about their access offer for disabled people and of course blind and partially sighted people too. The first exciting projects around access that Heather mentioned to Toby was the production of around 1,000 guides looking at the accessibility of National Trust locations that the Trust has been working on with AccessAble highlighting what sort of access information will be included in the guides and how they will help blind and partially sighted visitors. Then to how the Trust has been trialing the use of the NaviLens codes and technology at one of their Devon properties and how the Trust's digital team have been working with the RNIB on the use of the NaviLens technology to a couple of access projects that Heather is looking forward to the National Trust launch this year. If you would like to find out more about access at one of the National Trust locations near you or just more about access generally then do email accessforall@nationaltrust.org.uk or visit the following Access for Everyone pages of the National Trust website - https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/who-we-are/about-us/access-for-everyone (Image shows RNIB logo. That means about one in five people over the age of 15 within the City of Victoria are impacted by the level of accessibility when they move about the city. In this episode we talk to a father with a disabled son about what life is like when access to places most people take for granted is denied.

Nothing feels better during the start of the January winter than daydreaming about those ideal vacation getaways we want to plan. All those warm, tropical destinations we’d love to escape to during these winter months. But let’s be real…planning a vacation or trip when you have a chronic illness or disability can be quite complicated. We want to make holidays fun and spontaneous again, so we enlisted the help of someone who’s an expert in travel with a chronic illness, Carrie-Ann Lightley. As a disability travel blogger, Carrie-Ann has sent over 15 years learning how to best survey and examine hotels, venues, transportation and vacation destinations to suit those with disabilities or chronic illness from her experience living with cerebral palsy. And now she’s the Marketing Manager for the UK’s leading virtual accessibility guide AccessAble which provides detailed information about all things travel through their trained surveyors. So, no better person than Carrie-Ann to bring on the Season Three opener and give us all the traveler advice and holiday tips so we can put the fun back in our vacation and travel life—no matter how long your trip may be. In this episode, Carrie-Ann and Dominique chat about their top three countries on their traveler’s list (which ALL three are identical!), and how Carrie-Ann answer to ‘what was your childhood dream job?’ was probably one of the best answers we’ve ever had on the podcast, examine what the top questions someone should think of when picking their holiday destinations or researching about whether hotels, venues or restaurants are accessible, and talk openly about why it’s pivotal those of us with chronic illness/disability chat with our travel companions (family, friends, partners, etc) BEFORE any trip about how they can be helpful in certain scenarios so no one’s making major decisions under pressure. And our intermission story time is filled with major laughs as Carrie-Ann tells us a story that involves a vacation to Spain, her husband, an ocean view and an unfortunate encounter with a light pole—trust us, it’s unlike any story we’ve heard before and Dominique lives for a good surprise ending! Plus, we bring back our new segment of Top Search and bring on the dialogue about what are the top searched questions people are asking when deciding on travelling, top questions they search when considering whether locations or venues are accessible to their medical needs, the top questions we should be asking hotels if we need assistance, and the top hashtags to search on social media when checking out holiday spots. And the end of our episode is JAM-PACKED with facts and tips our guests should take some major notes on because Carrie-Ann and Dominique give the best advice for when you travel on the small day outing, the weekend trip and the long vacation holiday, the best tips for packing—especially if you have medical needs to pack with you too—efficiently for a trip, and the guidebook to scheduling activities into your holidays so they’re medically tangible yet spontaneous too, so it’s fun and stress-free for everyone involved! Carrie-Ann even brings up some surprising statistics that prove why it’s not just ideal to make your venue accessible for guests, but it’s also a major avenue of revenue to bring in many more guests if they can use the facility and enjoy their holidays there. Venues, hotels and holiday destinations should become more inclusive, it’s a fact, and it just makes sense. You will be booking your next holiday with so much excitement after you check out this episode! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
