In this episode, we have a pretty cool chat with Stephanie Dodier, reformed dieter and coach for women post diet-culture. We dive deep into how society kinda messes with our heads, telling us we need to look a certain way to feel good about ourselves. Dodier brings up something called "the safety of conformity," which is basically about how we mix up feeling safe with actually being confident. Stephanie shares some personal stories -- for example, about being taken to a Weight Watchers meeting when she was just 12. It was a tough moment that stuck with her, making her feel like her body was somehow "wrong." This story set the stage for a lot of what she talked about, like how we chase after this image society wants for us, thinking it'll make us happy or confident, but it's really about feeling safe from judgment. The chat also ventures into how all of this safety stuff isn't just about weight. It ties into aging, health, and money. (Did you ever stop to think about how being worried about money is kind of similar to worrying about weight?) It's all about trying to fit into what we think we're supposed to be. Towards the end, we disuss how facing doubts and insecurities is actually a part of being confident. The real journey is about exploring all of the parts of our lives where we might not feel secure -- and figuring out how to work with them. Bio: Stephanie Dodier is a Clinical Nutritionist CNP, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, host of two top-ranking podcasts in the non-diet industry and creator of the Going Beyond The Food Method™️. The body positive movement is sweeping the nation! The term "large and in charge" has never been more apparent than what we are seeing in American culture. One can contribute many factors to this; such as convenience, fast food, processed food, and sedentary lifestyle to name a few. Regardless of how we got here, a 600 pound life is not a healthy one; and the simple joy of being able to wipe one's own ass is slowly fading. That being said, fat people have been publicly shamed for generations. The images projected in today's culture are often of unrealistic bodies. We have equated skinny with health, and that is not always the case. Much as a box of chocolates comes in many shapes and sizes, so do humans. (Thank you Forest Gump for the metaphor) This week, Sheryl and the gang dive into these difficult concepts. This show is for entertainment purposes only. One of the best ways to beat the stressors of diet culture is to find people that can support one another, learn together, and make people feel like they belong and are important. This episode is inspired by a member of my group program, Fierce Fatty Academy, who shared that her doctor shamed her son's weight. Children are going to be exposed to weight bias, so what can we do when that happens? And what can we do to make sure that we don't unintentionally cause them to stress about their weight and food? Isn't childhood “ob*sity” causing massive issues in society meaning we need to control children's weights? BONUS: List of 39 books for kids to adolescents that spread the body diversity message. I'm so excited to share my conversation with Nicola Salmon today. She is a fertility coach and activist for better fertility care for people of size. I've been following her work for a few years now - I first heard her on Amanda Laird's podcast called Heavy Flow - obviously all about menstrual health and periods. I was so inspired by her passion for advocacy for a high level of health care at all sizes. Today we are going to dive into some important topics around Fat Positive Fertility such as: Some of the common myths surrounding fertility for fat folks What the research says (and what it doesn't say) Why weight loss and dieting is not helpful What people can do instead to help their fertility process How people can advocate for better care Any much more Nicola's professional bio: Nicola is a fat-positive fertility coach and author of “Fat and Fertile.” She helps fat folks navigate getting pregnant in a weight-obsessed world and advocates for change in how fat people are treated whilst accessing help with their fertility.
