Xbox has released a patch that quashes various third-party accessories not explicitly authorized by Microsoft. Any device that Xbox doesn't license will now receive a “0x82d60002” error code. Users then have two weeks before the Xbox disables it, permanently blocking the device (although Microsoft has said there "should" be no issue with players using the Xbox Adaptive Controller). We discuss this sweeping, rather harsh new move by Microsoft, but come away with more questions than answers. We'll also be talking about how Bungie's CEO claims the company's recent round of layoffs were due to Destiny 2 underperformance, how Sega says development of its first "Super Game" is progressing steadily, and how 2023 has the best-reviewed slate of video games of the last 20 years. Finally, class is in session with Professor Ryebread in our Nostalgia 101 segment. On this week's episode, Bobby & Matt break down the business behind the world of gaming. First up, we'll be talking about Sony's new accessibility controller, Project Leonardo, which was recently revealed for the PlayStation 5. Project Leonardo is designed to make gaming more accessible for players with disabilities, and we'll be discussing what this means for the future of accessibility in gaming. Next, we'll be covering the release of the Xbox Adaptive Controller, which was developed in partnership with organizations that serve players with disabilities. This controller allows players to customize their setup and access a wide range of games, and we'll be discussing what this means for the accessibility of the Xbox platform. We'll also be discussing the ongoing legal battle between Microsoft and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC has accused Microsoft of monopolistic practices, and although Microsoft initially accused the FTC of acting unconstitutionally, it has since walked back those accusations. We'll be discussing the latest developments in this case and what it could mean for Microsoft and the gaming industry as a whole. We'll also be discussing the recent approval of the Microsoft-Activision Blizzard merger in Chile, and the reported cancellation of at least five games by Wizards of the Coast. And finally, we'll be discussing the success of Marvel's "Snap" in-game event, which has reportedly generated over $30 million in global consumer spending. We'll also be discussing the latest developments in the world of gaming, including the ongoing sales battle between the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X|S. According to VGChartz, the PlayStation 5 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S in the US in November 2022, with the PlayStation 5 selling over 1.5 million units compared to the Xbox Series X|S's 1.2 million units. We'll be discussing what this means for the future of the console wars and what factors may have contributed to these sales numbers. We'll also be discussing a recent article from Reuters about the future of gaming in China. The Chinese government recently lifted a freeze on new gaming licences, which has led to speculation about the potential for new gaming companies to enter the market. We'll be discussing what this could mean for the gaming industry in China and the potential impact on the global market. Kaitlyn's formal gaming accessibility experience began in 2012 when her father founded Warfighter Engaged – a non-profit organization that creates custom adapted gaming controllers for veterans with disabilities. This early exposure to the power of gaming as a vehicle for social inclusion and healing inspired her early career choice as an occupational therapist.   Can you tell we're a bit unorganized?  Because we totally aren't! We're on top of things! We promise...   Game play charts have not moved in a while, titles leaving Game Pass and Xbox Adaptive Controller is allowing wheelchairs to become Xbox Controllers! As you can tell, the news has no rhyme or reason this episode... We're just into everything from the get go. Quite a lot of news for the start of the year.    We even go over what games are coming soon for the Series X. Is that the hype train pulling into the station?    For new games we have a stoner Koala detective in a noir-like adventure, Pillars of Eternity II for all your RPG needs and take a trip to a strange planet in Journey to the Savage Planet. Monster Energy Supercross 3 comes out 2 weeks in a row (trust me, it makes sense) and an updated-almost-3D-remake of Snake! Now we can all be in the 90s again!   We hope you enjoy this episode. For those of you who don’t know, Jersey is the largest and southernmost of the Channel Islands located between England and France. The island itself isn’t that important for this story, except that a dad from Jersey recently sacrificed his weekend so his daughter could most likely spend a great number of hers ignoring her father. Rory Steel, who heads up the Jersey Digital Academy, which provides training and education for those pursing a career in digital technologies, took up the challenge of customizing an Xbox Adaptive Controller, which is designed to help those with mobility issues play video games. Steel’s daughter Ava is challenged with what he describes as “fine motor neuron issues”, which can make traditional gaming controls a challenge to use. Steel used parts and tools sourced from ebay and a local hardware store to build a control panel that sits on top of the Adaptive Controller. This panel features two joysticks. This first is for moving the on-screen player through their game. The second allows for properly positioning a camera that is part of the gaming system, which is used to bring human movements of the player into certain games. The next step was adding 16 buttons around the console, each representing a unique gaming function. After what Steel describes as some “serious soldering and wire management”, the console was tested and, well, Ava’s reaction pretty much says it all. Now, states her dad, she can play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, just like all her friends. In addition to one very happy daughter, Steel’s work has also impressed the folks at Microsoft and Logitech. The companies have reached out to him about designing additional controllers for those with other types of mobility impairments.

In this episode your Nice Hosts talk all about two important aspects of game design that can help more people play your games- Localization Systems and Accessibility! Stephen drives in the snow, Martha gets her nails done and Mark tries to get the baby to go to sleep.NOTE: The CVAA law that Martha talks a lot about in this episode applies -only- to chat systems in games not to game play. She didn't realize this at the time of recording- but all the things we talk about are still things to strive for in every part of your game!Photo credit: Microsoft Localization Systems 0:07:03 Mark LaCroixProductionProgrammingUI / UX“What languages to localize your game into?” - Jacob Stempniewicz, Game Developer Accessibility 0:46:30 Martha MegarryAccessibilityGame Design“About CVAA: US legislation affecting communications functionality in games, ne… - IGDA Game Access SIG“CVAA for Fostering Innovation and Change” - Sarah Horton, The Paciello Group“2018's Accessibility Advances” - Ian Hamilton, Game DeveloperAble GamersGame Accessibility"What It's Like To Play Games When You're Colorblind” - Cameron Gidari, KotakuXbox Adaptive Controller“Designing for Disabilities” Video Series - Mark Brown, Game Maker's ToolkitWikipediaKaren Stevens, EA Sports Accessibility Lead

Hot off the announcement of the Xbox Adaptive Controller, we're joined by SpecialEffect's Dr Mick Donegan, Joe Morgan and Bill Donegan - a trio of experts in the field of helping disabled gamers play the latest video games. This episode begins with an insight into the making of the Adaptive Controller - for which SpecialEffect was one of the consulting charities - and how it marries different forms of input to open up gaming to as wide a range of people as possible, no matter what disability may have hindered them in the past.   We also discuss the next steps for the industry and whether we can expect more devices like this to appear, as well as general tips about how developers can make their games more welcoming for disabled gamers with considerations as obvious as customisable controls to more practice and tutorial areas.
