In this episode of Double Tap, Steven Scott and Shaun Preece kick things off with a casual chat about their current health woes, joking about the myriad illnesses that seem to strike as the weather changes. The duo then dives into a discussion about a recent visit to an AI burger joint, "CaliExpress by Flippy," reported by The Guardian. They explore the implications of AI and robotics in the fast food industry, particularly in light of California's new $20 hourly minimum wage for fast food workers. The conversation raises questions about the future of employment in an increasingly automated world, the ethics of replacing human jobs with machines, and the potential societal impacts of such shifts. Steven and Shaun also address the critical reception of the Humane AI pin, highlighting a particularly scathing review by tech influencer Marques Brownlee. They debate the responsibility of reviewers with large followings to consider the impact of their critiques on emerging technologies and companies. Listener feedback and emails bring up topics such as the VoiceVista reading speeds, the Arcanite fingerprint reader's performance, and accessible fitness apps for interval training. The episode wraps up with a voicemail from a listener sharing his favourite travel destinations and experiences, prompting a light-hearted reflection on travel preferences and the value of exploring new places. Fitness is a crucial element to the health of every human being, but many of us need a push to get active, relying on a gym, fitness class or online videos to guide us in our fitness journey. However, these kinds of exercise programs aren't designed for those with disabilities, and they're often left feeling out of place and discouraged. People with disabilities also have higher rates of conditions like diabetes and obesity, so it's especially important for them to have access to physical activity. Aiming to close the gaps people with disabilities experience and provide greater access to fitness is The Spirit Club Foundation. Its founder, Jared Ciner, and Executive Director, Kim Schofield, are joining host Jamie Truman in this episode to share what they're doing to fulfill the organization's mission. This includes offering funds for individuals to attend exercise programs, providing fitness classes and group exercise programs, and more. Jared and Kim's personal experiences with the program highlights the amazing impact the organization has on the lives of people with disabilities and their families. Not only does physical activity reduce the risk of disease, improves immunity, mental health and LOTS MORE, but they've seen firsthand the positive effects of team-based training and socialization. To learn more about the benefits of the organization, be sure to register for their upcoming Fitness Festival on October 1st at the Ivy Mount School in Potomac, MD. The festival runs from 1 PM to 4 PM and will feature fun demo classes, a silent auction, award ceremony and more. Imagine this. You're teaching your child to ride a bike. If you don't have kids, just imagine a beloved child. You've just taken the training wheels off for the first time and you help them get on the bike. With your hand on one handlebar and the other on the back of the seat you slowly get them rolling. You tell your child you're going to let go on the count of three. 1, 2, 3. You let go, and they wobble for exactly one half of a pedal rotation before falling over. What is your reaction to this quote failure unquote? Do you tell this child they are an idiot and a failure? Do you tell them might as well forget they crazy dream of ever riding a bike like the other big kids? Of course not. You stand beside them and tell them that was a great start and that you're proud of them, and then you help them get back on the bike to try again. So why is this so different from the way many of us talk to ourselves after a quote failure unquote? Maybe it's time to relearn how to parent ourselves. Or maybe – as my guest today says – it's time to learn how to kick ass compassionately, to celebrate small victories, learn from our mistakes and discover the power of the restart. My guest today is Kathleen Trotter. Kathleen first appeared on this show about a year ago, and she's back again today to help us become our fittest future selves. Kathleen is a fitness expert, media personality, personal trainer, writer and author, and as you'll soon hear, she is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about helping people live their best lives. She believes that we should live our lives by design, not by default to become our best – and fittest – selves. But that's easier said than done. But not to fear – Kathleen is here to guide us on this journey. Join us today as Kathleen shares her thoughts on why working is winning, the importance of perseverance, patience, and intentions, why we need to build systems now that will support our future selves, and the criticality of mindset and self-love. We all know the benefits of exercise. It's good for us in the short term and in the long term… it's good for us physically and mentally. But, it's often hard to find the time or motivation or to get momentum going with it. Today's podcast is all about finding fitness that you LOVE, so you look forward to it and you enjoy it, versus seeing it as chore and something you kinda dread but do it because you feel like you have to do it. We're talking about your relationship with fitness today… how you think about it and approach it… and how changing up what you're doing and how you think about it could be one of the biggest game changers in your overall physical health but even more so for your mental health. Focusing on fitness that you do at the start of everyday in a way that when you end, you feel like the best version of yourself, going into the day. Approaching fitness in a creative way allows you to really lean into the movement that makes you feel the best and that you enjoy doing. And it shifts from something dreaded to something that makes you feel alive and strong and more balanced and centered. Here are some of the points Lindsay discusses: -Change it up is key -Watch or listen to something interesting to keep the time moving **pick ahead of time! So there is no wasting time when it's game time -Challenge your body with new movement Fitness ideas: trampoline, heavy weights, running distance challenges, sculpt classes via OBE fitness online, running stairs with a body weight on, running the beach, boxing. -Momentum is everything - it's more about the consistency of it than what you actually do. Show up everyday (or almost everyday) and give as much as you have each day. -Fitness can feel like this morning clarity - physically and mentally -Get something hard in before the day even gets going - get in an early win -Do it alone or with friends depending on what feels best to you -Build it into the routine - it's already been decided and time made for it -Love it so much that you do it on vacation -The best way to get momentum is just start. You don't a full plan or fancy equipment just move your body to get going. The feeling will be enough to start the motivation. -Make it your own competition to beat yourself - you're in a solo competition. Comparing to social media or other people is always a losing game. We aren't here to be the 80% versions of ourselves. Let's get up and move and start our days feeling ALIVE and strong and powerful. The discipline of it builds self confidence and happiness. And that's AWESOME!
