With her first book, Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man, trained clinical psychologist Mary L. Trump focused a spotlight on their family's complex history to explain how her uncle became a historically disruptive national figure. The book was a international bestseller, appearing in the midst of a heated presidential election and providing deep insight into the nation's 45th president. Now in The Reckoning: Our Nation's Trauma and Finding a Way to Heal, Mary Trump examines America's national trauma, rooted in our history but dramatically exacerbated by the impact of current events and the Trump administration's divisive policies. She says that our failure to acknowledge this, let alone root it out, has allowed it to metastasize. Whether the trauma manifests itself in rising levels of rage and hatred, or hopelessness and apathy, the stress of living in a country people feel they no longer recognize has affected millions. It's a collective PTSD that a new leader alone cannot fix. Mary Trump explores how our current trauma is the logical outcome of the stories we tell ourselves, the myths we embrace, and the lies we perpetuate. Trauma shapes us in ways we may not be aware of, and will always do so unless we face what has happened to us, what we've done to ourselves, what we've done to each other. She says an enormous amount of healing must be done to rebuild our faith in leadership, and our hope for this nation, and it starts with the reckoning. Mary L. Trump holds a Ph.D. from the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University, and has taught graduate courses in trauma, psychopathology and developmental psychology. If there is one other person out there more bullish than I am regarding Donald Trump’s capabilities for Mussolini-like behaviors, it’s his niece Mary Trump. Mary made a splash when her tell-all book, Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created The World’s Most Dangerous Man released. The book was unique because it combined an autobiographical account of Mary’s family history as a Trump and her various interactions with the man she simply refers to as “Donald,”with detached psychoanalysis of the various Trump relatives covered in the book via her education and training in psychology, which includes a Ph.D. from the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies. Thus the book is captivating- combining clinical diagnoses of various Trump family psychoses with Mary Trump’s personal anguish, loss, pain, and decades of crushing disappointment not only with Donald Trump, but with multiple members of the Trump clan. In our convo, Mary and I decompress from Wednesday’s Capitol siege, where her crazy uncle unleashed a throng of “deplorables” on Article II to try to physically keep them from certifying Joe Biden as the next president of the United States and seize control of the government on his behalf. Like many Americans, Mary & I are frustrated at the lack of security that was provided to the Capitol Building even when the threats being made against Congress were well publicized (as you know, yours truly devoted two episodes of this pod to potential violence in D.C. on July 6th and Trump’s efforts to amass a MAGA Army). Mostly, we spend an hour ranting about Donald, radicalism in the Republican Party, worrying about sustaining democracy in America, and having the same conversation many of you have been having this week: can America survive the final week of Trump’s presidency? She and Francesca discuss AEDP’s emphasis on the relational connection between the therapist and the client. “I think this is something that is so fundamental to AEDP and to how I work, that the healing is there. It is about engaging it and bringing it forth. Getting it to engage with that that is broken. It is not like we are broken and, at the end, we are healed. It is like the two are side-by-side.” – Diana Fosha Explore healing from a different perspective with Somatic Experiencing Practitioner Oren Jay Sofer on Ep. 86 of the Metta Hour Podcast Existing in the Heart and Mind of an Other (14:30) How can a deep relational connection low our defenses and allow us to heal from trauma? Diana shares how recognizing another for who they really are can open them to this kind of healing. “Sometimes the small things, little details, can provoke a profound sense of, ‘Oh, I exist for you. Feeling seen and cared about in those terms is just huge – people just melt.” – Diana Fosha No Longer Lost (40:00) Francesca and Diana discuss the breakthroughs that occur during therapy and spiritual practice which awaken a person to a deeper understanding of themselves. They discuss the life-changing shift that is inevitable once someone realizes their potential for positive transformation.
