Alvin and German conduct a great conversation with Chaplain (Lt Col), retired FDNY firefighter, ordained chaplain, and nationally recognized leader in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM), , Van Don Williams '77. Van Don has dedicated his life to serving others through emergency response, spiritual care, crisis intervention, and leadership. He began his career with the New York City Fire Department, where he served for more than 20 years as an Emergency First Responder and Battalion Firefighter. After Colgate he earned a Master of Science degree in Fire Protection Management from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, becoming the first active-duty African American firefighter in FDNY history to attain that degree. His experience responding to disasters fueled a passion for Critical Incident Stress Management, a commitment that deepened after surviving the collapse of World Trade Center Tower One during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In the aftermath of that tragedy, Van Don used his chaplain training to help fellow firefighters and first responders navigate grief, trauma, and healing. Following his retirement, Van Don continued his work in crisis response and mental health support. He currently serves as Deputy Chief of Chaplains for the United States Air Force Civil Air Patrol, holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his more than 30 years of service with Civil Air Patrol, he has served at the squadron, group, wing, region, and national levels, while also developing and implementing Critical Incident Stress Management programs throughout the organization. At Colgate, Van Don earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Anthropology. He later earned a Master of Divinity and continued a lifelong commitment to leadership, service, and helping others heal in times of crisis.
Today on Mark MI Words we welcome Sgt Tom Lee.Tom has been shot at, lied about, fired, praised, rebuilt, broken, and redeemed — and somehow, he's still on the job.For more than twenty‑three years he's been on the front line of Texas law enforcement. In this episode of the AAST Cutting Edge Podcast, host Dr. Caroline Park and co-host Dr. Susan Kartiko are joined by Shira Rothberg, licensed clinical social worker and Trauma Survivors Network Coordinator at Inova Fairfax Hospital, to discuss Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and its role in supporting trauma and emergency department staff after high-impact cases. Drawing on her training through the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF), Shira breaks down how structured debriefs help providers normalize acute stress responses, reconnect with their teams, and access further support when needed. The conversation explores what CISM looks like in practice — from leadership recognition that a debrief is needed, to hybrid in-person and virtual formats, to the important distinction between something that is therapeutic and formal therapy. For trauma programs looking to implement CISM, the takeaway is clear: it starts with one or two trained facilitators and leadership buy-in — and once staff experience it, they keep coming back.

And far too many responders struggle in silence wondering if they will ever get better. She outlines what happens in the body and mind during a critical incident that makes it both normal and natural to experience difficult thoughts and feelings. With more than 40 years of experience in the field of psychology she teaches Critical Incident Stress Management. She worked with the American Red Cross to help victims of 9/11 and served as a clinician for the West Coast Post-trauma Retreat.Kathryn also interviews Author Meg Stafford.Award-winning memoirist Meg Stafford has an adventurous spirit, and this time she takes us along for the ride. When her daughters venture into terra incognita – one of them meditating in the Himalayas and the other providing unarmed protection in the Colombian countryside – Stafford decides to go too. In the process, she reflects on her own lifetime of wanderlust and what it means for a parent to love and let go. Generous, insightful, and deeply funny, Stafford is the ideal tour guide for a journey as big as the world and as intimate as the human heart. She illuminates how there may be no greater test in parenting than trekking around the globe with your adult daughters. She is an award winning author and as a social worker in private practice, she's been helping others negotiate the terrain of relationships and connections for over 35 years.

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr Heather Brown. The Director and President of Behind The Line, Inc., Dr. Brown holds a Bachelor of Social Work from Salisbury University, her Master of Science from Capella University, and completed her Ph.D. in Forensic Psychology at Walden University. She is certified to teach both Critical Incident Stress Management and Mental Health First Aid, and she helps instruct cadets in the mental health unit at the Eastern Shore Criminal Justice Academy. We'll discuss her 2022 dissertation: The Role of Child and Adult Sexual Fantasies and Criminal Paraphilia Involving Serial Sexual Murderers. Gus found her report after speaking with Bishop Tony Caldwell about the missing black females in Missouri. Bishop Caldwell referenced previous serial murders in the area, including Robert Berdella. Dr. Brown's report features Berdella, Seattle's Gary Ridgeway and a number of other White rapists and serial killers. She makes a point of the fact that most of the serial sexual killers are White Men. We discuss what it is about White Culture that produces this pattern of White Male behavior. We re-visit the concept of necrophilia (including the Joliet, Illinois case from 2013, where White teens had sex on the corpses of two black males.) Dr. Heather Brown also became the second White person to tell C.O.W.S. listeners that White people are more informed about White Supremacy/Racism (with a table spoon of inappropriate laughter). #WhatDoesItMeanToBeWhite #TheCOWS13 INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE 564943#

Courageously Broken - DA Michaels tells her story Host: Conrad Weaver Guest: D.A. Michaels ABOUT D.A. MICHAELS Donna Michaels has had a distinguished career which began by serving in the U.S. Navy and followed by 21 years in law enforcement which she is now retired from. She is a proud mom of a teenage daughter and enjoys her time with their three hysterically funny dogs. After being diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in 2017, she began a journey to find answers to questions she had struggled with for years. In the course of doing so, she started to journal and before she knew it, she had written a book. Her discoveries not only allowed her to find the answers she was seeking, but in choosing to share her story she realized she could help others as well. She credits the strength of her “Never Quit” mentality to the three years she spent working alongside the Navy SEALs. There she established enduring friendships that would eventually save her life. Donna spent much of the past two decades in law enforcement helping others in crisis, from various mental health problems. She is a Crisis Intervention Officer, Critical Incident Stress Management member and is all too familiar with how traumatic events can affect anyone. Even the bravest and strongest among us. In an effort to erase the stigma of PTSD, Donna hopes to not only encourage those to get help who battle their own invisible wounds, but also help the general public gain a better understanding of PTSD and not to fear those who have it. Donna's book, Courageously Broken, may be purchased on her website and online bookstores. www.courageouslybroken.com +++++ LEARN MORE ABOUT PTSD911 DOCUMENTARY: https://ptsd911movie.com/ https://www.instagram.com/ptsd911movie/ https://www.facebook.com/ptsd911movie https://twitter.com/ptsd911movie SUPPORT THE FILM, MAKE A DONATION: https://ptsd911movie.square.site/ #firstresponders #ptsd #mentalhealth #documentary #resilience #resiliency
