He was called the most dangerous man in Vermont. The governor said it on television. The truth is more boring and more alarming. Daniel Banyai is a former protection contractor and a Seventh-day Adventist who built a firearms training school called Slate Ridge in West Pawlet. He did it by the book. Federal firearms license. Explosives permits. Zoning. A school classification the town had handed out for 200 years. He welcomed anyone who'd show up and shoot straight. Then it came apart. Neighbors who'd missed their window found a clause and reopened it. The town pulled the permit it had already granted. He fought to the state Supreme Court and lost. They demolished the buildings while he was locked up and made sure the materials couldn't be reused. We talk about the year inside. Isolation. The shot caller. Senator Barry Goldwater, the Republican nominee for President in 1964, was in no way a virulent racist, like others in his era, including Bull Connor, George Wallace or Strom Thurmond.  But he reached a higher plateau in American politics and his views on ‘freedom’ were in direct contrast with those of Martin Luther King, Jr., who felt that until human and economic rights were secured for all, it did not exist in full form in America. Goldwater felt that freedom was in trouble because the federal government was usurping states’ rights and the rugged individualism, he espoused with his Western frontier approach to government. They embodied a modern clash of the civil rights movement and the conservative movement as they both gained momentum.  Clearly, in the short run, Martin Luther King, Jr’s. vision won out in 1964 when the Civil Rights bill was passed and Goldwater lost in emphatic fashion to Lyndon Johnson, winning only five states.  However, their differences have been embodied in our politics to this day.

This is my interview with Jeremy Kuhns, the new owner of Dangerous Man Brewing Company.  We recorded our chat at 56 Brewing Company since they just collaborated on a beer called Playmaker Amber Ale.  It will be available for Hockey Day Lakeville, and will help raise money for the Hendrickson Foundation.
