When was the last time your doctor mentioned your soul during treatment? I'm willing to bet never—and that's precisely the problem Dr. Catherine Kelly addresses in this profound conversation about what's missing from modern medicine and psychology."The father of medicine, Hippocrates, said the soul is present in every illness and every organ over 2,000 years ago. Carl Jung said the same for psychology. But where is it now?" Dr. Kelly asks. As a former medical school professor, she witnessed firsthand how the soul has been systematically removed from our healing traditions despite being the most foundational aspect of who we are.In this eye-opening discussion, we explore the Soul Health Model—a revolutionary framework visualizing our wellbeing as a tree with ten essential branches, including physical, psychological, interpersonal, financial, sexual, and recreational health. For practitioners interested in incorporating soul health into their work, Dr. Kelly shares details about her new certification program designed to bring this missing dimension back to healing professions. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, feeling disconnected, or simply curious about a more holistic approach to well-being, this episode offers a refreshing perspective on how reconnecting with your soul might be the missing piece in your healing journey.Bio Dr. Katherine Kelly, is a licensed psychologist in her own psychotherapy, soul-healing/coaching and consulting practice in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She completed her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of Southern Colorado (1992) and both her Master's (1995) and Doctorate in Counseling Psychology (1999) from Indiana State University. She also earned a Master of Science in Public Health degree (2000) from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the university's Department of Family and Community Medicine. She has received specialized training from the Mind-Body Medical Institute of Harvard University and has been trained in various holistic, natural health, and spiritual methods of healing, including nutritional psychotherapy, aromatherapy, Pranic Healing, Reiki, Soul Realignmen,t and other practices. Her dedication to healing has been widely recognized as she was the recipient of the Provider of the Year Award by the regional Mental Health Association and was nominated as an Incredible Woman for a local community television network, which spotlights role models to inspire young women to pursue their own passions.Website and Social Media drkatherinetkelly.comSoul Heal https://drkatherinetkelly.com/level-one-soul-health-certification/We hope you have enjoyed this episode. “Evolutionary architecture became a necessity, not because anybody wanted it to be, but because you didn't have a choice. You have to be able to change your systems to keep up with changing business and consumer expectations, let alone regulatory frameworks.” In this episode, I have an insightful conversation with Rebecca Parsons, coauthor of Building Evolutionary Architectures and ex-CTO of ThoughtWorks, on the topic of evolutionary architecture. Rebecca shares the definition and principles of evolutionary architecture, as well as some important practices that software engineering teams can adopt to support it. Rebecca also offers her perspective on the impact of AI in software development and evolutionary architecture. Key takeaways: - Evolutionary architecture supports guided, incremental change across multiple dimensions. - Fitness functions are a key tool for implementing evolutionary architecture. - Some of the important engineering practices for evolutionary architecture include continuous delivery, evolutionary database, contract testing, and choreography over orchestration. - AI coding assistants can help analyze and understand complex legacy systems, aiding in refactoring and modernization efforts. - Over-reliance on AI coding assistants may hinder the development of proper abstraction and critical thinking skills, especially in junior developers. This is my part two conversation with Dr. Amy Young.Ever felt the relentless pressure of perfectionism? Or perhaps witnessed a teenager grappling with it? Well, you're not alone. Today, we're unmasking the enigma that is perfectionism with our insightful guest, Dr. Amy Young. We dissect how it stealthily permeates different arenas of a teenager's life, morphing into late-night cramming sessions or even procrastination. Dr. Young, with her expertise, helps us decode the telltale signs, and distinguish between a pursuit of excellence versus a dangerous inclination towards perfection. Dr. Young also helps us navigate the less-charted territories of teen compulsions and body-focused repetitive behaviors. We shed light on the physical and mental compulsions that teenagers may manifest, and the potentially addictive cycle of hair-pulling and skin-picking. You'll get to understand the biological precursors to these conditions and Amy will introduce you to effective strategies to reduce these behaviors. The conversation then veers towards differentiating these behaviors from self-harm and we illuminate the importance of education in this realm. Hear how open, non-judgmental conversations can empower teens to advocate for themselves. As we approach the end of our dialogue, we emphasize the cruciality of repairing relationships post-mistakes. So, tune in, as we challenge the concept of perfection, and instead, embrace the invaluable lessons that come from embracing our imperfections.Bio:Dr. Amy Young is the Founder and Director of the CBT Center for Anxiety & OCD and has been working in the behavioral health field since 1995. She completed her Postdoctoral Fellowship training under nationally recognized OCD expert, Dr. Jonathan Grayson, and anxiety expert, Dr. Linda Welsh. Feel Good From Within with Yvette Le Blowitz - #SPAITGIRL Podcast EP.197 - The Self-Talk Workout with Dr. Rachel GoldSmith Turow, PhD, Psychologist, Psychotherapist, Mindfulness Teacher, Author Self-talk matters, but what methods of building healthy self-talk actually work? In The Self-Talk Workout, Dr Rachel Goldsmith Turow, PhD, Psychologist and Mindfulness Teacher, shares evidence-based techniques to go from being your own worst critic to your own best friend. Perhaps you want to be nicer to yourself but don't really know how to get there. Or maybe you're someone who assumes self-criticism is a permanent part of your personality. Rest assured you're not alone-millions of people struggle with the toll that excessive self-criticism takes on their mind, energy levels, jobs, and relationships. Problems with self-talk vary dramatically from one person to the next: they can appear as mild but persistent inner criticism, full-blown self-loathing, or the pain of internalised oppression or abuse. After over twenty years of working with individuals, groups, and classes on self-criticism and related challenges, psychologist and mindfulness teacher Dr. Rachel Goldsmith Turow, PhD offers "the self-talk workout" and doable exercises that can help you replace self-criticism with self-kindness and self-encouragement. Specific self-talk strategies such as "Spot the success", and "Allowing all feelings, skilfully," require just a few minutes a day. These skills can be practiced individually to transform your self-talk, or you can choose to combine two or more exercises to enhance your self-talk workout. In The Self-Talk Workout, Dr. Rachel Goldsmith Turow, PhD also shares examples from her own life and experiences as a psychotherapist. Rachel Turow was born in San Francisco, California, and grew up in the Bay Area. After completing a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Oregon, a clinical internship at the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Turow worked as a supervising psychologist and research scientist at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Turow has adapted mindfulness-based treatment protocols for patients with post traumatic stress and depression, and has developed preventive programs to enhance students resilience and well-being. Dr. Turow is a frequent speaker on topics relating to stress, trauma, mindfulness, dialectical behavior therapy, and self-compassion. In addition to her clinical psychology practice in Seattle, Washington, Dr. Turow works as adjunct faculty at Seattle University and at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Yvette Le Blowitz Podcast Host talks with Dr. Rachel Goldsmith Turow, PhD to find out more about her book The Self-Talk Workout and how we can change the voice in our heads from self-criticism to self-love, self-kindness and self-compassion. As you know if you're a regular here on the podcast or if follow me on social media, I have spent many years swapping out products to reduce my exposure to environmental toxins. We know that these chemicals are around us, but it's difficult to know if they really are inside of us and how they might be impacting our health. While I think I am doing all the right things, I have always been curious to know what chemicals were still making their way into my body.    Today's guest is Dr. Jenna Hua, the founder of Million Marker, a health-tech startup that empowers people to detox environmental toxins out of their lives through mail-in test kits, lifestyle audits, product recommendations, and counseling. When I learned about Million Marker and the work that Jenna is doing to help make these invisible chemicals visible, I knew I had to share.    In preparation for this episode, I completed the Million Marker Lifestyle Audit and urine analysis to test for 13 hormone-disrupting chemicals including parabens, bisphenols, and phthalates. Today we are going to walk through my step-by-step experience going through the audit and test kit and we're going to talk about the results.   This episode will educate and empower you to do what this podcast is all about, know better and do better.     About Jenna Jenna's extensive experience as an academic and health advocate led to her founding Million Marker in 2019, shortly after completing a Postdoctoral Fellowship with Stanford University's School of Medicine. So we had to come up with TBI guidelines. We had to come up with specific ways of diagnosing these three different categories. So there's three, right? There's mild, moderate, and severe.10:10 All this really came about because of awareness, because we found out that this is something we have to pay attention to because [it's] leading into all these other problems. And they can appear six months after an injury. And some of the patients that I see, those symptoms have been there for 10 years. 14:27 What's different about it is that in symptoms, we would go ahead and look at data that we already have, and we will see all these differences, all these disparities between men and women in just symptom reporting. The women were reporting more cognitive problems. After brain injury, women were reporting more psychiatric problems.15:36 Cortex can be a certain thickness and it's a variable that changes throughout life, but it's pretty stable in your adult stage. And usually the cortex of the brain is thicker in women than it is in men. That's just what the data shows. After brain injury, we compared cortical thickness between men and women after adjusting for age and, you know, skull size because men have bigger skulls, right? And so we were like, okay, are there any differences? It turns out that women who have brain injury somehow don't end up recuperating in terms of the mass of the cortex, as much as men. So men go back to their size, women don't. 18:37 I think it's mind blowing because we, you know, we have hormones, we bear our children. We have very different external stimuli that are coming to us. And somehow the treatments that are offered to men are supposed to be completely fine as-is for us. And they're not. I also just did another study in which I've found that the models that are created, machine learning models that are created for men do not fit the women. They fit, but not as well as they do for men.19:17 We know for a fact that our bodies, our stomachs digest medicine, different from men. We, our brains respond differently to medication than men. Our skull is smaller. We have less blood in our body. Our neck is thinner, which is one of the reasons why, and we have what's called when you jerk your head back in a motor vehicle accident, it's called whiplash. One of the reasons that women report more vertical and more balance problems is because we have a thinner neck. And it moves back. So there's all these tiny differences that can actually get really accentuated later on in life, if they're not treated.20:36 One of the base things really learned in the past 10, 15 years is asking somebody if you've had a TBI, that's not going to give you the answer. You have to really be interactive about it and assertive about it. In fact, a lot of academic centers have developed what's called TBI questionnaires, traumatic brain injury questionnaires, and this goes for a lot of different things, right? It can also go for depression. It can go for a lot of different things.Dear Mind, You Matter is brought to you by NOBU, a new mental health, and wellness app. To download NOBU, visit the app store or Google Play. This podcast is hosted by Allison Walsh  and Dr. Angela Phillips.
