Join us as we explore the St. Albans Sanatorium, a notorious former boys school turned asylum in Virginia. What exactly happened to make this place a hot bed of paranormal activity? Did a massacre really take place here between settlers and local Native American tribes? We discuss all that and more, you don't want to miss it! In the first half, pharmacist Ben Fuchs talked about natural health remedies and the vitamins, nutrients, and minerals our bodies need to maintain good health. A great way to de-stress is through slow deep breathing, he suggested. This practice can immediately reduce anxiety as well as improve your immune system and lower your blood pressure, he added. Fuchs was critical of the amount of added sugar in various foods, which he said takes a toll on the body's blood sugar system. If one does consume a sugary food, he advised drinking water afterward, which can dilute the blood sugar.Insulin resistance, he explained, can occur when a person swings from high to low blood sugar, and the hormonal protection system becomes unbalanced. Fuchs associated this condition as a precursor to many chronic illnesses, especially type 2 diabetes. To combat peripheral neuropathy (often related to diabetes), he recommended two supplements-- alpha lipoic acid and thiamine. He also highlighted the importance of connective tissue, which can deteriorate as the body ages. To counteract this, supplements such as glucosamine, and bone broth can be helpful, he said.---------------After the death of a close friend, Holly Faust set out to get answers about the afterlife. In the latter half, she discussed her ability to communicate beyond the veil, and her investigations at various haunted sites. In regards to what dark entities are, she believes some are very evil beings that want to cause harm and mayhem, while others have been here a lot longer than we have and we don't entirely understand them. Faust described her near-death experience after a car accident, and how it connected to her later career in the paranormal and spiritual search. During the NDE, she conversed with a tiny older man with pearly white hair. She had never met him before, but he consoled her and told her she had to come back to her body. Upon her return, she heard a "horrible wrenching sound," which she later learned was the jaws of life cutting her out of her vehicle.During her investigation at the St. Albans Sanatorium in Virginia, she was literally knocked to the ground by something that appeared to her as a shadowy dark thing. This may have been the entity that reportedly creeps or crawls down the wall, she noted. Faust recounted an odd occurrence at Gettysburg, where both she and her son saw someone dressed in Civil War garb with a floppy hat that others did not witness. That description matched closely with a photo of an apparition taken on the battlefield, thought to be a soldier from the Texas regiment. She recalled her acquaintance with the renowned paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren, who helpfully counseled her when Faust's son started experiencing "the gift" and seeing apparitions. Faust thinks of herself as a "storyteller for the other side...I'm open and willing to communicate either for them or about them."During the last half-hour, George featured a replay of an interview with Barbara Lamb on alien encounters from 6/28/21. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/georgenoory/message

This week's story was sent to us by a member of our community named Bill. He had this experience during an investigation at the Famous St. Albans Sanatorium in Radford, Virginia. This occurred during July of 2022.I was with my group on an investigation at St Albans, I was watching the monitors with the group and two of the ladies came back from where they were supposed to be. I was sitting there watching them on the camera and heard them coming down the hallway. This struck me as very odd since they hadn't moved. They were still in the room where they were supposed to be. At the same time they came up and looked at me and said “I've seen people”, then they turned around and walked back. There were 3 other people in our group that witnessed this. I can't really explain what happened but it was incredibly freaky! We are pretty sure they were doppelgangers. Thanks Bill for sending us this story! I have heard of people witnessing doppelgangers at St Albans in the past. For those unfamiliar with the phenomenon, doppelgangers appear in the paranormal folklore quite often. They are a person's double and are usually a bad omen and it is thought that if a person sees their own doppelganger, they will most likely die shortly after. The winter school crud got us and I had to edit so many coughs and throat clearings.TW: Brief mentions of suicide, miscarriage, sexual assault including involving a child, murder. Mild foul language (an entity uses the term "Wh0re").St. Albans Sanatorium in Radford, Virginia is convincingly haunted. For really real haunted. You know I love finding a book that lets me deep dive into the researched location, so I really dug into this one and some of the real experiences people have had.Experiences vary with shadow people, tons of great EVPs, spirit box sessions that seem too spot on to be coincidental, dark entities, something called "the creeper", etc. As always, the more people that report occurrences the more convincing it is for me.To support the show and get bonus content go to patreon.com/obscureappalachiaFind me on social media at Obscure Appalachia.Submit your true paranormal or true crime stories to obscureappalachia@gmail.comSources:St. Albans Sanatorium – Radford, Virginia - Atlas ObscuraSt Albans Sanatorium, Radford, VA - Colonial GhostsSt. Albans Sanatorium: A Personal Experience With a Dark EnergyListen: Electronic Voice Phenomenon Captured at St. Albans Sanitorium [DEAD Time] - Bloody DisgustingThe Tortured Souls of St. Albans Sanatorium - The Moonlit Road.comSt. Albans Sanatorium - Radford Virginia - Spooky AppalachiaEvent Recap: St. Albans Sanatorium • Paranormal DaresA Night at St. Albans Sanatorium – Jenny HayutThe Ghosts of St. Albans Sanatorium – Radford, Virginia – PARAHOLICS®Our EvidenceAmazon.com: The Ghosts of St. Albans Sanatorium: Black and White Edition: 9780692595114: O'Keefe, Pat Bussard: BooksDraper's Meadow massacre - WikipediaSt Albans Sanitorium Has Ghosts! - MidAtlantic Daytrips

Happy Halloween! As a special treat for the spookiest of holidays, we have a story from Julie, a volunteer at St Albans Sanatorium and friend of Spooky Appalachia who was kind enough to do a livestream with us a while back. You can hear this story, which she told us when we first met her while touring St Albans, as well as many others on our livestream from August 27th.This happened around the time I first started volunteering at ST Albans, it was Halloween night and I was working at the haunted house attraction. I was stationed in the second floor hallway in a ghost costume and when people would come, I would jump out and scream at them to try and scare them. That night one of my daughters told me she was going to be coming with her new boyfriend who I had never met. She said he has been talking a lot of smack and he's one of those people that stuff doesn't scare him and she asked if I could get him good. They made it in to me about 30 minutes till close, I know it's them because I hear my daughter giggling so I get myself ready. I'm hiding in the room, looking out through a hole waiting. I see two young men, my daughter and another girl start to go by. I stuck my head out the hole in the wall and went… BLLAAAHHH to scare them, then chased them down the hall. I decided to focus on going after the two young men knowing one of them was my daughter's boyfriend so I didn't pay much attention to the two girls. I must have done a good job because they both screeched like little girls! They ran down the hall to where my partner directed them down the stairwell. As they were going down the stairwell I walked down to my partner to point out who my daughter was. I said that it's her not the quiet one but the one that's laughing like a fool. I turned around to go back down the hall and my daughter then came up and hugged me. Then said you got him good momma! The girl was still behind her so I waved at her and introduced myself. The girl for some reason looked like she was bored to death. She looked like an average middle school girl, wearing jeans and a hoodie. Kind of pouty looking. A few days later I talked to my daughter , I asked if they liked the event and if they had a good time. She explained that they did. So then I asked about the girl she had with her. I asked if she had any fun at all and said she looked bored. My daughter then said what girl? I said I guess it was the other guy's girlfriend? Then my daughter said mom… there wasn't anyone else with us and it was just the 3 of them. My daughter and the two guys. I know I saw this girl, I know she was there. To this day I still double check when I look at groups and wonder.Thank you Julie for this story, it's always wonderful to hear you tell it, and we're excite to feature more of your stories here in the future. St. Albans Sanatorium has been many things over the years, a boys school, a mental hospital, an ill-considered daycare facility, and, today, a site for those seeking an experience with the paranormal. Built on a hill overlooking the New River outside of Radford, VA at the site of a bloody battle from the American Civil War, the location's violent history has led to many locals viewing it as a nexus for paranormal activity. The structure now known as St. Albans Sanatorium began life as St. Albans Lutheran Boys School in 1892. The school operated first under headmaster George W. Miles and then Winslow H. Randolph. It was a prestigious preparatory school in the area, however, bullying was reportedly rampant, and there were rumors that several students lost their lives. St. Albans closed in 1904, and the building sat vacant until 1916, when Dr. J.C. King converted the property into St. Albans Sanatorium.Dr. King was a forward-thinking psychologist for the time, emphasizing a home-like environment and attempting to treat his patients rather than simply locking them up away from society. St. Albans featured such amenities as a roof-top garden, a bowling alley, and a farm where the patients could work. Unfortunately, the treatments were still, by today's standards, barbaric. Electroshock therapy, lobotomies, and insulin-shock therapies routinely left patients either brain-dead or just simply dead. Hydrotherapy was also employed, where patients were covered in towels soaked in cold water, or left in bathtubs for days on end. Given the violent nature of the treatments at the hospital, it is unsurprising that the location is home to numerous unquiet dead. The spirits of St. Albans are many. A young boy named Jacob, an orderly named Donald, a grieving mother Rebecca, and the spirits Smokey and Red Eyes.A big thank you to Julie from St. Albans, who was our tour guide on our visit, was kind enough to sit down with us for a livestream, and who provided many of the stories we've related today. If you are looking for a book on St. Albans Sanatorium, we highly recommend The Ghosts of St. Albans Sanatorium by Pat Bussard O'Keefe. If you live close to Radford, VA, be sure to check out St. Albans annual haunted house, which takes place in September and October every year, or one of their historical tours or ghost tours throughout the year. Maybe you will have more luck meeting Red Eyes than we did. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

St Albans sanatorium, haunted by its eerie past, currently holds the spirits of many of its former residents, and is a house for paranormal activity. The grounds that now hold many visitors, intrigued by the building's past, used to hold vulnerable souls, susceptible to the nefarious procedures enforced by Dr. John King. The experiments had often led patients to permanent disabilities, and even death, although many of their spirits remain alive, skulking within the dingy, faded walls.
