Deep in the heart of Danville, Virginia, right on the North Carolina border, lies a crossing that locals have feared for generations. Officially known as Berry Hill Bridge, its darker nickname Satan's Bridge is well-earned. This isn't just a bridge; it's the center of a "triple threat" of Appalachian hauntings, flanked by the reality-bending Gravity Hill and the desolate ruins of the Witch's House. In this episode, we explore the heavy, unnatural atmosphere of Berry Hill Road. We dive into the history of occult rumors, ritualistic graffiti, and the legendary entities said to stalk the Dan River banks—from the Headless Woman searching for her lantern to the glowing gaze of "Old Red Eye."The true terror, however, comes from eight authentic listener-submitted stories that prove the bridge is very much active today:The Fog Man (1964): A terrifying encounter where a materialized figure attempted to board a young couple's roadster. The Bipedal "Deer": A shocking 7.5-foot-tall cryptid sighting that defies biological explanation. The Ghost Racer: Echoes of a fatal crash that still roar through the pitch-black night. The Horse Mask Figure: A modern, deeply unsettling encounter with a figure standing in the middle of the bridge. The Sunroof Whispers: A group of friends whose trip past the bridge resulted in unexplained physical illness and disembodied voices. From phantom cries to electronic failures and spectral photography, we uncover why Berry Hill Bridge remains one of the most notorious paranormal hotspots in the region.Have your own story? West Virginia's hills are steeped in more than just mist; they hold secrets that have shaped American legal history and legends that haunt the iron rails. In this episode, we dive into two of the Mountain State's most chilling "classic" ghost stories.First, we travel to Greenbrier County to recount the tragic life and afterlife of Zona Heaster Shue. After her sudden death in 1897, her mother claimed Zona's spirit returned from the grave to reveal the terrifying truth about her husband, Erasmus "Trout" Shue. It remains the only known case in U.S. history where a ghost's testimony helped secure a murder conviction.Next, we head to the historic confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers in Harpers Ferry. We explore the tragic legend of Screaming Jenny, a kind-hearted woman whose life ended in a ball of fire and a collision with a train. To this day, engineers and locals claim to see her flaming specter racing down the tracks, her cries still echoing through the valley.Join us as we explore these foundational tales of Appalachian folklore—where the veil between the living and the dead is as thin as the mountain air.Have your own story? The men and women who patrol the Appalachian wilderness are trained for many things—wildlife encounters, lost hikers, and harsh terrain—but nothing prepares them for the unexplainable. In this episode, we bring you two harrowing accounts from those who wore the badge in the deep woods.First, we explore a haunting at a remote ranger station where a sudden, thick fog and a supernatural sentinel in the form of a massive deer trap a ranger within the park boundaries. Then, we dive into a chilling testimony from a forest ranger who spent 48 years in the service, finally breaking his silence on the "Feral Families" that inhabit the restricted zones. From spectral activity in the headquarters to the rust-stained, "off-human" figures watching from the tree line, these stories prove that the Appalachian mountains hold secrets that aren't quite man and aren't quite beast.Have your own story? Is the Mothman a harbinger of doom, or simply a predator of the Appalachian woods? In this episode of Spooky Appalachia, we examine two incredible accounts from hunters and fishermen who came face-to-face with a winged nightmare.First, we travel to Floyd County, Virginia, on Thanksgiving morning, 2019. A turkey hunter's successful shot is interrupted by a bone-chilling screech and the sight of a 7-foot-tall creature perched in the skeletal branches of an oak tree. This week's story was sent in to us by someone who had an interesting encounter with a winged humanoid creature back in October of 1983. It took place in Watauga County, North Carolina.I was driving a Volkswagen Beetle to visit with my sister in Silverstone NC, which is off Highway 421, she said. I was around 18 years old at the time. I stopped at a stop sign off 421 where my headlights were shining directly on a barn straight ahead. That's when I saw this winged, human-like creature running alongside the front of the barn. It was around six to seven feet tall, dark, with two arms, legs, and huge wings. The creature looked like it was part bird and part man and it appeared to be wearing combat boots. Seeing this really freaked me out, so I sped away. After this I noticed the creature was following me.I made a left turn and sped up, questioning what the heck I was seeing. I heard wings flapping, looked into my driver's side mirror and could see this thing almost on top of my car following me. It kept up with my speed, which I would estimate at about 45 to 50 mph on a very curvy two-lane road. It followed behind and beside my vehicle for several miles.Eventually my engine started sputtering and seemingly the battery was being drained. The headlights started dimming as I nervously rounded curves. At this point the winged thing was flying over and pretty much clinging to the driver's side of my car. It was hitting my car and smacking into it. I didn't understand why it was on the driver's side hitting the car. I felt it was trying to get inside my vehicle and get to me I don't remember what happened immediately after this. I was out of it and came too several hours later and had gone around several curves .I don't know why or what happened after those curves, but I was really puzzled and lost. I saw a sign that read Camp Joy and I had no clue how I got off of my normal route or how I got there. When I got home I realized what the time was, I was puzzled even more by this. The trip that usually took about 20 minutes coming back from my sister's took 4 hours. When I realized all of this I felt sick! To this day I'm still not sure what happened. Big thank you to the person who sent us this story. It was pretty incredible. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

For this week, we've got a story sent in to us by a listener who may have had an encounter with Green Eyes at The Chickamauga Battlefield in Tennessee. For those of you who haven't heard of Green Eyes, according to some it's the spirit of a confederate soldier that got his head blown off by a cannon. His spirit now roams the area searching for his head. Others say that Green Eyes is a cryptid creature that was lured to the area by the bloody Chickamauga battle. Now that we've given a brief overview, let's get to the story. When I was in Middle School around 2001, my grandmother took me to the Chickamauga Battlefield in Tennessee. We did it all the time when I was a kid, I actually still like to do it! She took me to go see the battlefield and check out the caves in the battlefield and stuff. We always like going to look at them. I had been really upset that day because my parents had gotten divorced not too long ago and I was still kind of sad about it. My grandma had always told me that green eyes is attracted to sad stuff. We were walking, you always see stuff in the tree line and stuff when you walk around the Chickamauga battlefield for long enough, but we got to the dried up creek. We were going to look at the caves around there. When we got to the dried up creek we could see something kind of moving towards the tree line. It looked kind of skinny but looked like it kind of was made out of hay and the glowing green eyes. I'll never forget the eyes. They were like two lightning bugs. It looked up, looked at us and then he kind of just disappeared further into the forest. My grandmother told me we need to get out of here. So, we went back to the car and left. It still kind of scares me sometimes being out in the woods especially when it starts to get dark because I know that's when green eyes will come out. Hosted on Acast.
