In the winter of 1967, high schooler Billy Taylor snapped a photo of a silver, bean-pod-shaped craft drifting past his window in southern Indiana. He didn't know then that a single click of his sister's Kodak camera would mark him for the rest of his life. This week, we dive into one of the most chilling fan submissions we've ever received. From a mysterious nosebleed and a withered pine tree to a terrifying 1973 confrontation with two "plastic-faced" entities in an auto parts store, Billy's story is a gauntlet of paranormal phenomena. In this episode, we discuss:The "Hollow" Car: A witness account of an MIB vehicle that was nothing more than a metal shell with no seats or steering wheel. Physical Toll: The chronic nosebleeds, scoop marks, and puncture scars that suggested Billy was being "sampled" like livestock. The Vanishing Chase: A breakneck high-speed pursuit that ended in a blinding flash of light and total disappearance. A Lifetime of Observation: How Billy lived until 66 feeling like a "piece on a chessboard" moved by silent black Cadillacs. Was Billy Taylor a victim of a decades-long experiment? In one of the most compelling interviews in Spooky Appalachia history, we sit down with Linda, an original witness to the legendary Mothman sightings of 1967.Decades after the events that shook Point Pleasant, West Virginia, Linda breaks her silence to share a terrifyingly detailed account of the night she came face-to-face with the "Bird." This isn't just a story about a cryptid; it is an exploration into the high strangeness that gripped the Ohio River Valley, including pulsating UFOs, "lost time," and chilling encounters with the mysterious Men in Black [32:12].In this episode, we dive into:The Sighting: Linda describes being 17 years old on a hilltop in Mason, WV, when a massive, reddish-orange UFO hovered directly over her car.The Encounter: The moment of "lost time" and finding herself sitting at the feet of an 8-foot-tall, man-like creature with dark, wing-like appendages. The Men in Black: A haunting encounter in Point Pleasant with "carbon copy" men in solid black suits and sunglasses who appeared shortly before the disaster. The Silver Bridge Tragedy: Linda shares her prophetic dream of the bridge collapse and the eerie silence that followed the December 15th disaster. The Aftermath: How hypnotic regression helped her reclaim lost memories and why she believes these beings are interdimensional.Whether you are a lifelong follower of the Mothman prophecy or a newcomer to Appalachian folklore, this firsthand account provides a bridge between the physical and the unknown.Connect with Linda: Check out her book Beyond the Pale Moonlight on Amazon and visit the Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant to learn more about the legend that continues to haunt the hills of West Virginia. Is the Mothman a harbinger of doom, or simply a predator of the Appalachian woods? In this episode of Spooky Appalachia, we examine two incredible accounts from hunters and fishermen who came face-to-face with a winged nightmare.First, we travel to Floyd County, Virginia, on Thanksgiving morning, 2019. A turkey hunter's successful shot is interrupted by a bone-chilling screech and the sight of a 7-foot-tall creature perched in the skeletal branches of an oak tree. With glowing amber-red eyes and a massive wingspan, this entity seemed to be stalking the same woods as the hunter—leaving him to wonder if the encounter was a warning of the global lockdowns that were soon to follow. Then, we look back at a chilling 1970s encounter near Addison, West Virginia. A local fisherman named Reece followed a haunting wail from the Ohio River to a place called Brian's Run, only to find a "breathing ball of brush" that transformed into a tall, dark humanoid. This story takes an even darker turn when Reece returns to find his boat burned to ashes and a mysterious Man in Black visiting his home, forcing his family to flee the state forever.Key highlights from this episode:The terrifying physical description of a modern-day Mothman sighting. The connection between cryptid sightings and the mysterious Men in Black. Why these entities seem drawn to outdoorsmen in remote areas.Do you have a story from the woods? In this episode of Spooky Appalachia, we dive into the dense, silent forests of Virginia to uncover two bone-chilling encounters with a creature that isn't supposed to exist.First, our host shares a deeply personal childhood memory from the remote Appalachian high country. While exploring the thick timber of his backyard at just seven years old, he and his two dogs stumbled upon a massive, rust-colored shape hidden beneath the forest floor that "uncoiled" and rose with a guttural groan that shook the earth This encounter left a lasting mark, followed by weeks of strange vocalizations and the feeling of being watched by a dark, vertical shape in the tree line.Next, we head to the shores of Smith Mountain Lake in 1978. A fan shares their story of being 12 years old and encountering a broad-shouldered, midnight-black figure crouched in the jagged shade of a towering pine It wasn't a bear, and it wasn't human—and the reaction from the storyteller's father was enough to confirm that some secrets are best left in the woods .Have you had a similar encounter? In this episode, we explore two bone-chilling, true accounts of the legendary Dogman. From a muscular predator that vanishes into the North Carolina mist to a young girl's mysterious "neighbor" in Sparta, Tennessee, these stories delve into the ancient, predatory intelligence stalking the hills. Are they werewolves, guardians, or something far more dangerous? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

First, a driver pulling industrial coal through West Virginia encounters a "Pale Walker" at a desolate fuel stop—a creature that didn't just watch him, but left deep, jagged gouges in his rig. Then, we travel back to 1991 for a chilling Mothman encounter in Point Pleasant that left a trailer ripped open by iron talons. Is it the isolation of the road, or are some parts of Appalachia better left unvisited? This week's story was sent in to us by someone who had an interesting encounter with a winged humanoid creature back in October of 1983. It took place in Watauga County, North Carolina.I was driving a Volkswagen Beetle to visit with my sister in Silverstone NC, which is off Highway 421, she said. I was around 18 years old at the time. I stopped at a stop sign off 421 where my headlights were shining directly on a barn straight ahead. That's when I saw this winged, human-like creature running alongside the front of the barn. It was around six to seven feet tall, dark, with two arms, legs, and huge wings. The creature looked like it was part bird and part man and it appeared to be wearing combat boots. Seeing this really freaked me out, so I sped away. After this I noticed the creature was following me.I made a left turn and sped up, questioning what the heck I was seeing. I heard wings flapping, looked into my driver's side mirror and could see this thing almost on top of my car following me. It kept up with my speed, which I would estimate at about 45 to 50 mph on a very curvy two-lane road. It followed behind and beside my vehicle for several miles.Eventually my engine started sputtering and seemingly the battery was being drained. The headlights started dimming as I nervously rounded curves. At this point the winged thing was flying over and pretty much clinging to the driver's side of my car. It was hitting my car and smacking into it. I didn't understand why it was on the driver's side hitting the car. I felt it was trying to get inside my vehicle and get to me I don't remember what happened immediately after this. I was out of it and came too several hours later and had gone around several curves .I don't know why or what happened after those curves, but I was really puzzled and lost. I saw a sign that read Camp Joy and I had no clue how I got off of my normal route or how I got there. When I got home I realized what the time was, I was puzzled even more by this. The trip that usually took about 20 minutes coming back from my sister's took 4 hours. When I realized all of this I felt sick! To this day I'm still not sure what happened. Big thank you to the person who sent us this story. It was pretty incredible. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

For this week, we've got a story sent in to us by a listener who may have had an encounter with Green Eyes at The Chickamauga Battlefield in Tennessee. For those of you who haven't heard of Green Eyes, according to some it's the spirit of a confederate soldier that got his head blown off by a cannon. His spirit now roams the area searching for his head. Others say that Green Eyes is a cryptid creature that was lured to the area by the bloody Chickamauga battle. Now that we've given a brief overview, let's get to the story. When I was in Middle School around 2001, my grandmother took me to the Chickamauga Battlefield in Tennessee. We did it all the time when I was a kid, I actually still like to do it! She took me to go see the battlefield and check out the caves in the battlefield and stuff. We always like going to look at them. I had been really upset that day because my parents had gotten divorced not too long ago and I was still kind of sad about it. My grandma had always told me that green eyes is attracted to sad stuff. We were walking, you always see stuff in the tree line and stuff when you walk around the Chickamauga battlefield for long enough, but we got to the dried up creek. We were going to look at the caves around there. When we got to the dried up creek we could see something kind of moving towards the tree line. It looked kind of skinny but looked like it kind of was made out of hay and the glowing green eyes. I'll never forget the eyes. They were like two lightning bugs. It looked up, looked at us and then he kind of just disappeared further into the forest. My grandmother told me we need to get out of here. So, we went back to the car and left. It still kind of scares me sometimes being out in the woods especially when it starts to get dark because I know that's when green eyes will come out. Hosted on Acast. This week's story was sent in to us by a listener who had an interesting experience after their grandfather's death.I'll give a little background. I was 10 years old living in Massachusetts the year was 2006 when my grandfather died of a heart attack. I remember thinking that it was not real. Mostly because I never experienced death before that. But we ended up going to his wake and the funeral. It was an open casket wake. I saw his face, but it still did not feel real.Fast forward one year from the day my grandfather died in April 2006. I was sleeping in my bed, when out of nowhere my hot wheels car shot through the room from my dresser. No one else was in the room, but me. To make matters worse, simultaneously I heard a commotion in my parents room. I ran over there scared. When I got to their room they were both standing over my grandfather's hat. They had hung it up on the wall after he died as a memorial for him. Apparently it had fallen despite it being hung on the wall for almost a whole year without it falling. At that moment I knew in my heart that it was my grandfather sending a sign to us that he was there with us. Despite the fact that I loved my grandfather it did not make me feel at ease thinking he was roaming around our house moving things. After that I did not know if I should tell anyone this story because I was not sure if anyone would believe me. I have no evidence of it happening. Other than my parents possibly remembering it happening. And the idea of it happening terrified me. So I did not tell much of anyone. But now I do not care if any one believes and it has been so long to terrify anymore. In three days it will be 17 years since he died. May he rest in peace.Big thank you to the listener who sent us this story. I really enjoyed it! It gives the same kind of good vibes that story we did a few weeks back Tucked in By a Spirit. The spirit in both of these didn't seem to want to do anything malicious. Today we've got a double feature of UFO sightings sent in to us by a listener in West Virginia.Back in July of 2020, I was with my dad and we were heading back home from one of my baseball games in Logan County, West Virginia. It was around 8:00 PM. As my dad was driving us back, we saw on the right side of the road through some trees odd looking green and red type lights. It was strange because it couldn't be a plane, it was too low to the ground to be a plane but too high in the trees to be a person. It was very strange. Never saw metal shapes or anything because the trees on the right side of the road blocked the view. I didn't take a photo because I didn't have a phone and we were driving. We didn't expect it and we passed it by. My dad and I always thought this was odd and might be a UFO due to the color and its height from the ground. It was also stationary. If this sighting wasn't weird enough the listener that sent this one in had one more. This happened on April 30th, 2023 around 7:00 in the evening near Madison, West Virginia. I was with my family riding in the back seat of our car when on my left out the window I could see a faint white circle. At first I thought it was a plane but then I saw a second object, similar in shape. They were going in circles kinda like vultures do when they find a dead animal. It was a very weird experience indeed. If you look at the zoomed in photo I sent, it doesn't really look like a drone or anything I can think of.Thank you to the listener who sent these two stories in! I've always heard if you've seen one UFO you'll see more, so to the fan who sent these in be sure to keep an eye out! This week we have a pretty awesome story from a listener named Cheesebotodoom/Kenn from California where he had an encounter with a blood covered spirit that happened to them in the early 2000's.I don't remember exactly where in Long Beach the apartment was because I only went to it twice, the second time only because my dad needed someone to dog sit while he was away on business. The first time I went was just after he rented the place before he actually finished moving himself, his partner and the dogs in so I could get his mail for him. While I was sitting in the dining room looking through the kitchen to the EMPTY doorway to the little laundry room when I started getting real uncomfortable so I looked away to see if I could see anything out of the front room that would explain it and when I looked back there was a bloody woman in a torn up white shift or sleeping dress based on how loosely it hung with cuts on her arms and bloody knuckles and hands and blood all over the dress hanging by a rope in the doorway to the laundry room. Scared me so badly, but more than that filled me with an overwhelming sense of sadness and depression I almost started crying. It spooked me enough that I tried to forget it so I never took the time to look up if anything happened there to explain it. The other time I went a couple years later I got drunk the couple nights I had to stay there so I don't remember exactly how uncomfortable it may have made me.Thank you Cheesebotodoom/Kenn for this story! It gave me the chills when I first read it. This week we have a pretty awesome story from our good friend Theresa of Theresa's Haunted History of the Tri-State. This is about an encounter that wasn't Mothman in the Point Pleasant TNT area.On a whim one summer night in 2008, my friend and I went exploring the TNT area in Pt. Pleasant . We've checked out the accessible igloos many times, only three of which were actually opened, but he wanted to show me some pallets, drums, and other debris that had recently been placed in front of a few of the privately owned igloos, which were located down a different trail than the one that held the open igloos...Thanks Theressa for the story, be sure to check out her site Theresa's Haunted History of the Tri-State for more of her stories.https://theresashauntedhistoryofthetri-state.blogspot.com/2011/03/creepy-experience-at-tnt-area.html?m=1If you have a story you'd like to see get featured be sure to fill out our google form https://forms.gle/WBSBgRkna5RJLXAo6 Make sure to visit our YouTube channel for additional content! https://www.youtube.com/@SpookyAppalachia Hosted on Acast. This week, we have a story that was sent to us by The Mothman Museum, of you guessed it, a Mothman sighting! Thursday the 2nd Nov. 2006, my son and I were heading to Ravenswood (not too far from Point Pleasant). It was just before 5 PM and it was starting to become dusk. On my side of the road, I saw an extremely tall human-like figure literally jump/float straight up from the ground to the top of the trees. There are no houses near there, just trees and some empty land behind. I felt no fear, just a feeling of “Wow, what the hell was that thing?” I mentioned it to my son a couple of minuteslater when we neared town but did not tell him exactly where I had seen it. He told me he had seen it as well, but we both had stayed silent because of some other weird things that had been happening lately at our home...we were spooked enough as it was.I had not stopped to turn around because I was in a hurry to get somewhere before a certain time. On our way home, maybe 75-100 ft further down the road from the original site, both my son and I saw the figure again. He was moving upward in the branches of the trees. Yesterday (Friday Nov 3 2006) right before dark, my son saw it again, outside near a small patch of woods. My son noted red eyes during this second sighting. After some research, I knew what we had seen was Mothman!Big thanks to The Mothman Museum for sending this over and allowing us to use the story!Remember if you have a creepy story you'd like to see featured you can email us at webmaster@spookyappalchia.com. This week, we have a story sent in by one of our listeners. The story took place in October of 2021 at Edinburgh Manor. A quick back story on Edinburgh Manor. The property started out as a poor farm, in the 1850's. In exchange for working on the farm, people were provided food and shelter. With this one in particular most of the workers died on the property. Then in 1911, it officially became Edinburgh Manor for the insane, elderly, and disabled. It eventually closed in 2010. It is said hundreds of people died on the property during these years and is rumored to be one of the most haunted locations in the midwest. Now that we've given a little background let's take a look at the story. I had been to Edinburgh Manor once already by the time this happened, but it's definitely purportedly haunted. When this happened, I had just finished walking around on my own during a tour and just went up to the front of the building and was small talking with the guide and we realized we had a lot in common. She invited me to do the last round with her, to make sure no one was left in the building. We had cleared the lower and main level already and started up to the second floor. We were just messing around and joking and I noticed my camera started acting funny. We had gotten to the top of the stairs, turned left and we're kind of poking fun at the building and I said, “with how purportedly haunted this place is, I'm astonished I haven't gotten any activity”. Not 10 seconds later we were walking down the hallway and this 3” thick solid wood utility door (hinges on one side and latched on the other) came off the hinges and flew straight at us and hit both me, the guide and her dog pretty hard - she got a bad bruise from it and it broke a mirror. I've been to my fair share of haunted locations, but I've never seen anything remotely close to what happened here. Thanks to our listener that sent in this story. I think a big door is one of the larger objects I've heard someone say they had thrown at them. She sent a few photos of the door and it's one of those old judge wooden types. This was definitely an interesting story!Remember if you've had a paranormal encounter like this and want to send it in you can email us at webmaster@spookyappalachia.com. Hosted on Acast. This week, we have a story that was sent to us by a listener, who had a strange encounter with a spirit back in 2013.Back in 2013, I'd moved to the town of Lawrence, Kansas - a borderline oasis compared to the nothing that surrounds it. I was being housed by a family of a friend I'd made there, so I was quick to join them in things like household chores and weekly excursions. Every Wednesday, they went to church, so I usually tagged along as a sign of good faith. Not that Wednesday. That night, I had one of the worst migraines of my life. It was straight to bed, head under the covers, plus a pillow for good measure...Thank you to the anonymous listener who sent this in.
