Amy Nordhues grew up a survivor of sexual abuse. When she got saved, she went to the church for counseling. The very kind minister/counselor became a father figure, telling her she was the "daughter he never had," words he knew she was aching to hear. He invaded her personal space because he knew she was never allowed to have boundaries. What ensued was a horrific story of abuse by a therapist that was supposed to minster the healing power of Jesus. While this is a highly triggering podcast, it is one that needs to be heard. As survivors, we need to know what the warning signs are for unsafe therapists. Amy helps us to know what good therapists are and how to trust them. While Amy is not an sra survivor, this therapist tried to convince her that she was DID, adding to her confusion. We have to be wise even in therapy and Amy walks us through this delicate are. *Trigger warning: Talk of Sexual abuse On today's episode I sat down with Amy Nordhues, author and survivor of both childhood sexual abuse and sexual abuse as an adult at the hands of a mental health professional. Her story is detailed in her book “Prayed Upon, Breaking Free From Therapist Abuse.” During our conversation Amy touches on some of the following: The inner workings of the abuse process of adult victims -How past childhood trauma can make an adult vulnerable to predators -Understanding how an otherwise functional adult can be duped provides much needed healing for the victim and aides loved ones in providing support -Recognizing and bringing “into the light” the defective beliefs that are causing victims to doubt their own realities and become ensnared by abusers and more. Thank you so much Amy for sharing your vulnerable and personal experiences with the world in hopes of helping others feel less alone and more empowered. We tend to trust people who are in positions of power, or who hold down jobs that are service oriented like a doctor, a pastor, or a therapist. Amy Nordhues trusted her therapist. Everyone in her community loved him. Her friend raved about him. He was an elder at the church she was attending. Amy didn't know it, but he was also very, very dangerous. Our book this week is Preyed Upon: Breaking Free from Therapist Abuse and our guest is its author, Amy Nordhues. Amy is an author and speaker who hopes to use her experience both as a new Christian and as a victim of sexual abuse by a therapist/clergy to help, support and educate others. Through the telling of her very personal story she hopes to provide insight into the following: The inner workings of the abuse process of adult victims, how past childhood abuse can make an adult vulnerable to predators and so much more. I do want to caution everyone that while we won't be getting graphic, we will be discussing sexual abuse, and abuse by a trusted therapist. Please use your discretion about whether this is an episode that won't trigger anything for you. Luke 8:16-18 “Now no one lights a lamp and then covers it with a container [to hide it], or puts it under a bed; instead, he puts it on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not become evident, nor anything secret that will not be known and come out into the open. So be careful how you listen; for whoever has [a teachable heart], to him more [understanding] will be given; and whoever does not have [a longing for truth], even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.” There's a lot going on here in this short parable. Jesus dives right into what the purpose of a lamp is - to give light to people. What light does is to drive out darkness. How can we expect people to want to hear the gospel when it comes out that we are hiding and excusing sin? The news is full of stories that involve trusted members of a faith community who are abusing others in secret. Why are we shocked when the world doesn't trust us, when they call us hypocrites? We want to make our churches safe for the people in our congregations, but also for people who have been hurt and aren't sure where they can find a safe refuge. That's part of what author Amy Nordhues shared with us today. I hope you'll take something you've learned here and help your church become a light in the darkness in your community. Can you trust everyone in your church? Not always. Author Amy Nordhues of Prayed Upon: Breaking Free from Therapist Abuse shares her story about the deception and betrayal by a mental health professional. Amy's journey is about overcoming sexual abuse both as a child and an adult and how warped beliefs made her vulnerable to predators. But God, who never leaves us, showed her a way out to His path of freedom and healing. She knows how much God loves, values, and cherishes her and she serves Him by helping others to be set free from the bondage and shame abuse leaves behind. I love how her story shines the light of our worthiness to God and how His kindness and goodness follows us all the days of our lives. Amy's Book Contact Amy

She is a speaker and an author of the book entitled ‘Preyed Upon: Breaking Free From Therapist Abuse.' Preyed Upon is a book that was written for three groups. The first one is for the victims of abuse, in hopes to let them know that they are not alone. The second one is for the people who can't relate to abuse, those who judge people and their stories. This is to let them know how hard the experience is, and how hard it is to come forward with what happened. Lastly is for everyone, especially those people who are currently struggling to connect with God. Amy wants the people to know that these problems may have occurred, but it does not mean that God left us to suffer in pain. It wasn't God that did this to you. Amy Nordhues was a victim of abuse. She approached a therapist in hopes to recover from the abuse, depression, and issues with parenting and marriage. However, her therapist took advantage of her weaknesses and manipulated her to fit into his narrative. She didn't know what to do at first. She was so confused, not knowing what to do. She experienced doubts, especially about God. Thankfully, she was able to fight her abuser. She was able to ask for help from others. She was able to speak up and tell the truth. She stood up and fought against her abuser. Episode 203 of The Beyond Adversity Podcast is for those people who experienced abuse. This is for you to know that you are not alone. You are not fighting this on your own. This episode discusses all the abuse and adversity that Amy had in her life as well as how she was able to overcome it. “The Beyond Adversity Podcast with Dr. Brad Miller is published weekly with the mission of helping people “Grow Through What They Go Through” as they navigate adversity and discover their promised life of peace, prosperity, and purpose. https://amynordhues.com/ (https://amynordhues.com/) Book – Prayed Upon: Breaking Free from Therapist Abuse: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08SR1HTL6 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08SR1HTL6) Email: amynordhues@gmail.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/amy-nordhues-636806225/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/amy-nordhues-636806225/) Twitter: https://twitter.com/Amy_Nordhues (https://twitter.com/Amy_Nordhues) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amynordhuesauthor/ (https://www.instagram.com/amynordhuesauthor/)
S5 EP.13 – Amy Nordhues thought she was in good hands to heal from childhood trauma and abuse. Not only was her therapist recommended to her by a friend, but he was a deacon at her church. Instead of walking into healing, she walked into a nightmare of more trauma and abuse. Amy courageously shares her story in a memoir called Prayed Upon: Breaking Free from Therapist Abuse. You will be inspired and encouraged by our conversation with Amy as she shares her passion for Christ and the healing He provides.
Good Morning! Today, I interviewed Amy Nordhues, Author of Prayed Upon: Breaking Free from Therapist Abuse. Amy has gone from victim to thriving child of God. Amy tells us her story about the feelings she felt growing up as a victim of childhood sexual abuse.. and how all of that lead her to seeking help of a psychiatrist who takes advantage of her past and grooms her until she is finding herself once again in the midst of sexual abuse. Amy Nordhues - Sexual Abuse by a Mental Health Professional It is my prayer that today's conversation with adult sexual abuse survivor Amy Nordhues will strengthen your heart in countless ways. Amy's abuse was at the hands of an older gentleman, trusted by the community as well as the church and he was also a mental health professional. Amy had the heavy burden of experiencing abuse both in her childhood and as this story indicates, an adult. Can childhood abuse set you up to be an easy target as an adult? Amy answers that question and many more with transparency and a genuine desire to give the abused a voice. As we talked I could see countless ways the devil was focused on destroying her. From her childhood abuse, where she didn't have any control over what happened to her to the professional help that at first feels like, she describes it, a sanctuary but then becomes a psychological prison. She gives examples of the subtle ways her Doctor broke down barriers and Amy's internal dialogue that silenced the alarms that were going off in her head. Her candor was refreshing as she didn't side step any questions and gave authentic answers even if they weren't the type that seem appropriate, canned answer most people expect. Satan may have tried to shut down Amy's heart, to silence her voice, and keep her from ever discovering who she was in Christ …. but he failed. Amy is a solid Christ follower. She's found healing for her abuse, victory over her abusers and whenever Satan feels the desire to take a swing at her over her past, she already has the tools in place to triumph over anything evil tries to put on her. She knows the One who is our ultimate Healer, Christ. He's the only One who holds the restoration of our mind, body and heart and He works it all together for our good and His glory. Need a little encouragement for your heart today, listen in to Amy's story of courage to report her abuser and face the backlash from those who did not believe her. Amy's courage now to share her story both in this podcast and through her book, Preyed Upon, Breaking Free from Professional Abuse gives you an inside look at the warped beliefs that early abuse instills, beliefs that make adult victims vulnerable to sexual predators and what it looks like to walk in victory. If you are in an abusive situation or if you've experienced sexual abuse, Amy is speaking directly to you and your heart will find a kindred spirit. May you remember that you are not alone. Today's amazing guest is Amy Nordhues. Amy is an author, passionate Christ follower, and a married mother of 3 who became an expert on the healing God provides after suffering sexual abuse at the hands fo a mental health professional. Her book, “Prayed Upon” tells the true story of her escape from the abuse of a respected, Church-going psychiatrist. Amy strives to help other victims understand themselves and know that they're not alone.Amy first met her psychiatrist 7 years before the abuse started. She had sensed something amiss immediately and had not gone back. Upon finding and falling in love with a church community, where he was one of the elders, Amy found herself sucked in again. Other Church-goers praised the doctor's work, and when a friend gave Amy her session for free, the grooming had begun. Amy says that part of her recognized the malpractice right away, but she struggled with an internal monologue that explained away any of the red flags she noticed. Her desire to be polite in front of an authority figure, as well as her history of being abused as a child, had removed the word ‘No' from her vocabulary. Amy had confided in a friend from Church about what was happening in her sessions multiple times, but it wasn't until she decided to speak with her pastor that change began to happen. The moment that Amy was able to get out of her abusive situation was by having her friend sit with her through the scheduled timeof her therapy, which was now three hours long. The doctor called nine times while her friend manned the phone. When the three hours were over, Amy knew that by not going once she would never go again. Connecting with others allowed for Amy to see the harsh reality she had been in. Not only was she not alone in her trauma, she was not defective or at fault because of it. Throughout her recovery, Amy re-learned how to be vulnerable and how to connect with her husband and family, a journey that has transformed her married life. Writing her book, “Prayed Upon” allowed Amy to understand herself. The book took about 7 years, but by putting it on paper, she let herself understand what had happened and forgive herself for not leaving earlier. The book cover, of a bird sitting in a cage with the door open, symbolizes her internal struggle of why she didn't leave earlier. The book has helped Amy and other women know that, “It's not just me.” Listen in to hear Amy's account of how her experience affected her marriage, what modalities of healing she sought out in recovery, and how her relationship with God facilitated her recovery. Prayed Upon: Breaking Free from Therapist Abuse Amy Nordhues pt 2 There are some people that choose a career in healthcare, mental care, public service – all because they want to help those in need. There are those that do so because they believe it will provide for a secure financial future for them and their families. There is nothing wrong with those motives. Nothing at all. In fact, if you can be of service to others and help to secure your financial future, that almost secures your career motives from the start. But there are some who enter these fields for nefarious reasons. Maybe their good intentions were the initial factors for choosing that type of career. But, somewhere along the way, they realize that, for whatever reason, they can, let's say, “Get more of (you fill in the blank).” In some cases, this selfish motivation soon becomes their focus. It soon becomes a dark side that they “groom and prey upon” their victims. Manipulating them into providing whatever it is they crave and all the while encouraging them to remain silent about the activities. In some cases – or most cases, even to accept the responsibility for what has happened. This becomes even more tragic, when these events happen at the intersection of power, vulnerability and religion. Yes, religion. My guest today, Amy Nordhues, is a survivor of this type of circumstances. Amy Nordhues is a survivor of both childhood sexual abuse and sexual abuse as an adult at the hands of a mental health professional. This person was a respected elder in the church. Did the pastor address the issue publicly in church? Or the did he allow the doctor to just “go away?” You initially wanted to press criminal charges but was advised against it. Why? How prevalent is this type of abuse among professional therapists, counselors, etc.? Are there any statistics on this? When your friend reported all of this to the medical board, how long from that time until you attended his license forfeiture hearing? Was he allowed to continue practicing and seeing other patients that entire year? Amy, I want to thank you for sharing all of this information with us, through your book and all that you are doing to expose this evil that is among us. Other than your book, https://amzn.to/3Dom3b4 (“Prayed Upon,”) are you doing any other work, talks, etc. to help others that have faced the same situations you went through? And your book, https://amzn.to/3Dom3b4 (“Prayed Upon,”) is available in Kindle format on Amazon, correct? Any print versions released or coming out soon? And if someone wanted to get in touch with you, to ask a question or maybe to do an interview such as this. How can they do that? How can they get in touch with you? I'll put links to all of this down in the show notes. Folks, unfortunately, in the fallen world in which we live, things like this, like what Amy went through – occur more frequently than we know or would like to admit. I encourage you to order Amy's book https://amzn.to/3Dom3b4 (“Prayed Upon: Breaking Free from Therapist Abuse.” ) I would like to recommend you purchase two or three copies – or more! Or share them with others. I'm sure you know of someone or have heard of someone that may have or may be going through, some similar type of abuse. Sow this into their life. You never know how it may help them. And give one copy to your pastor. This one book may open their spiritual eyes to situations in their church so, with the Holy Spirit's help, they can identify and put a stop to this type of... Support this podcast

First question I always ask is this… Other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Amy Nordhues?” As I was going through this book, the abuse started back when you were three years old? Is that correct? How much did that impact you growing up? In school, middle school and high school? How old were you when you first started counseling? I know in your book, we'll just call him, “Dr. D.” But that was not the first time you seen him, from what I read in the beginning… Let me ask you this, why did you write this book now? At this time of your life? How did he groom you to accept what was happening as part of your therapy? He also started to share details of his life with you…more or less making it appear you were helping him as he was helping you. Did you ever find out if any of that was true? Or did it matter? At one point, he even said you were a witch. How did that come about and what was his reasoning for saying that? Throughout your book, you mention little gifts he gave you along the way. Seemingly insignificant at face value, but they struck an emotional cord that actually drew you into his world. What should someone who is in therapy and wondering if they are facing the same thing – what should they be watching out for in this regard? When he actually committed the sexual assault, you fled. But that really affected you. But then he called you and YOU accepted responsibility for what happened! How did he get you to do that? You say God started to deal with you in this situation through various methods. Can you share some of the ways the Lord was speaking to you during all of this? When you made the decision that enough was enough and you told the pastor and his wife, how did they react, initially? Folks, you may know of someone or have heard of someone that may have or may be going through, some similar type of abuse. Sow this into their life. You never know how it may help them. A married mother of three, she enjoys spending time with family, writing, reading, photography, and all things comedy. She hopes that through her ministry, she can shed a light on the very under-reported issue of therapist/clergy abuse both to offer support to the victim and to aide loved ones so they can better assist the victim with the very arduous process of healing. She also hopes to work towards improving the laws in her state which currently has no legislation regarding therapist abuse. In over half of the states in our country, it is illegal for a therapist to engage in sex with a client. The power differential that exists in any therapeutic relationship makes it impossible for a client to give consent. For this reason, the patient entering therapy must be protected." amynordhues.com

In episode 78, Amy brings about a uniquely challenging topic. All season, we've explored different ways to find healing; what do you do when the thing meant to heal you actually causes harm? Amy had sought support from a Christian Counselor who was also an elder at her church, and over the course of a year experienced that hardest season of her life due to "therapist abuse". Perhaps you've never heard of this phrase, but there are many who have experienced abuse at the hands of individuals positioned to provide care. Amy's story is powerful, and may encourage you as well How has God met you when you've been harmed by those meant to heal?
