Does the Catholic Church have any actual authority, and where does this authority come from? The Church has existed for over two millennia and encompasses over a billion members worldwide. However, does this longevity and size imply that God founded it and granted it divine authority? Scripture scholar Fr. Pablo Gadenz joins Jeff Cavins on The Bible Timeline Show to examine the biblical evidence for the authority bestowed upon the Church by Jesus Christ. The two explain the nature of this authority and why it is an indispensable characteristic of the one true Church.

Behind the facade of a religious community, lies a story of manipulation, mind control, and tragedy. Let's investigate the secrets, the power, and the psychological grip of the Word of Life Church – a story of religious devotion taken to the extreme.   Welcome to another episode of The Unlovely Truth. I'm your host, private investigator Lori Morrison. Join me for another captivating true crime story, where physical, spiritual, and emotional safety takeaways are waiting for us. If you are listening, I believe you have a unique calling—to become a different kind of PI, not a typical private investigator, but a person of impact!   This is Season 4, Episode 43. Our book this week is Broken Faith: Inside One of America's Most Dangerous Cults  by Mitch Weiss and Holbrook Mohr. Our guest this week is Lori Prather, our chaplain here at The Unlovely Truth. Get ready for an eye-opening journey into the heart of the Word of Life Church– a story that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and make your question your  own susceptibility to be manipulated.   This is one of the most disturbing instances of what I considered spiritual abuse and physical abuse in a church setting that I've ever come across. A church movement that started in 1979 and still exists today has many critics and many who would defend it with their lives. Though written as an expose, I believe this book also serves as a cautionary tale of sorts. It may be hard for some of us to accept that people can proclaim to be godly, then turn around and be horribly abusive. But it does happen. That's why Jesus says this in Matthew 7:15 -  Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. We will look at what else He says about how to recognize these false prophets.   Matthew 7:15-20 NLT   Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. A good tree can't produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can't produce good fruit.  So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire.  Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.   This passage of scripture is so straightforward and so practical and it calls us all to practice what security experts often call situational awareness. Jesus is instructing his disciples on how to know who in ministry is authentic, and who is not. He knew we would deal with situations like this and He told us exactly what to do! We have to embrace this as part of our calling. If we look closely at this passage, we can see that Jesus gave us a simple three step process.    First we have to be willing to accept the fact that there will be false prophets trying to exert influence in our churches and ministries. Jesus doesn't say we might encounter them, He states that they will come. We are instructed to be on the lookout.   Second, we must look objectively at a person's actions. Trees produce fruit, and people produce actions. If someone produces bad actions, they are not a harmless sheep but are really a vicious wolf.   Third, Once we identify these bad actions, we have to deal with them. No - we aren't going to throw anyone in the fire, don't do that. But we may need to have that person step down from a leadership position or even remove them from our midst.   I know that sounds harsh, but I didn't come up with this, God did. The integrity of our churches and our ministries is too important to handle wolves in sheep's clothing any differently. Archeology Continues to Confirm Biblical Record

New evidence, reports Nathan Steinmeyer of the Biblical Archaeology Society, is confirming the biblical description of the kingdom of Judah as it existed in King David's time. This is significant, according to Steinmeyer, because “[d]espite King David's prominence in the Hebrew Bible, little archaeological evidence has been directly linked to the early years of the Kingdom of Judah.” Because of this apparent discrepancy between the archeological record and the biblical description of the region during the 10th-century B.C., “some scholars have argued that Judah only became a developed polity in the ninth or even eighth century B.C.E.”   Recently, however, an article published in the Jerusalem Journal of Archaeology by renowned Hebrew University archeologist Yosef Garfinkel, whose team has been digging four major sites in the Judean foothills since 2007, makes claims that “completely transforms the state of research.” Newly exposed settlement layers reveal a number of population centers with writing, housing, and casemate [or double] city walls, which form the kind of fortified cities described in 1 and 2 Samuel. These cities, at Khirbet Qeiyafa, Khirbet el-Ra‘i, Socoh, and Lachish may have been the nucleus of the kingdom of Judah. Furthermore, Garfinkel notes, the ancient city of Hebron makes an ideal center point for this kingdom and matches the biblical record, which states that David was crowned in Hebron and only later moved to Jerusalem seven years into his reign.   A number of other findings from these sites also confirm the biblical narrative. Rectangular beams in groups of three match descriptions of Solomon's palace and temple and indicate that the pattern was used at the time of King Solomon's reign. Tenth-century fortifications in the city of Lachish correspond to the biblical account of King Rehoboam. The Judean city of Khirbet Qeiyafa sits across the Elah Valley from the major Philistine city of Gath—matching descriptions of conflict between the House of David and these neighbors.   Contra the widely accepted scholarly claims of the 1990s, which argued that Judea was “empty of population” in the time described by the Bible, Garfinkel's findings suggest that 10th-century Judea was a young, expanding kingdom.   Archaeological work is complicated and often incomplete. Still, it is remarkable how often the evidence, even as it piles up, confirms biblical accounts of history. According to Jewish archeologist Nelson Gluek, “It may be stated categorically that no archaeological discovery has ever controverted a Biblical reference.” This, even as “[s]cores of archaeological findings have been made which confirm in clear outline or exact detail historical statements in the Bible.”  The reason archeological confirmation matters is because Christianity is uniquely grounded in history as it actually happened. Some religions, like Buddhism or Hinduism, are insulated from verifiable tests of logic, reason, or human history, claiming to reveal only spiritual truths. Other religions, such as Islam, ground some traditions in history while making its central claims, such as the inspiration of the Qur'an, an article of pure faith. (For the record, the claim the Qur'an has been perfectly preserved fails even basic challenges of historical and textual criticism.)   While these other belief systems are “non-falsifiable,” meaning they are so far removed from the world of evidence it is impossible to show whether they're true or false, Christianity claims that its most important events, particularly the events of Israel and the life of Jesus Christ, actually happened. The events of the Bible occurred in actual history and are open to historical scrutiny—most notably the death and resurrection of Jesus.   Otherwise, the apostles Peter and Paul made clear, we are left with only cleverly devised myths and faith that is futile. Christians need not fear rigorous scholarship, especially not the booming world of ancient archeology. The more we dig into the dirt of history, the more we are reminded that God has always been, and remains today, active in the world He made.

We tend to trust people who are in positions of power, or who hold down jobs that are service oriented like a doctor, a pastor, or a therapist. Amy Nordhues trusted her therapist. Everyone in her community loved him. Her friend raved about him. He was an elder at the church she was attending. Amy didn't know it, but he was also very, very dangerous. Our book this week is Preyed Upon: Breaking Free from Therapist Abuse and our guest is its author, Amy Nordhues. Amy is an author and speaker who hopes to use her experience both as a new Christian and as a victim of sexual abuse by a therapist/clergy to help, support and educate others. Through the telling of her very personal story she hopes to provide insight into the following: The inner workings of the abuse process of adult victims, how past childhood abuse can make an adult vulnerable to predators and so much more. I do want to caution everyone that while we won't be getting graphic, we will be discussing sexual abuse, and abuse by a trusted therapist. Please use your discretion about whether this is an episode that won't trigger anything for you. Luke 8:16-18 “Now no one lights a lamp and then covers it with a container [to hide it], or puts it under a bed; instead, he puts it on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not become evident, nor anything secret that will not be known and come out into the open. So be careful how you listen; for whoever has [a teachable heart], to him more [understanding] will be given; and whoever does not have [a longing for truth], even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.” There's a lot going on here in this short parable. Jesus dives right into what the purpose of a lamp is - to give light to people. What light does is to drive out darkness. How can we expect people to want to hear the gospel when it comes out that we are hiding and excusing sin? The news is full of stories that involve trusted members of a faith community who are abusing others in secret. Why are we shocked when the world doesn't trust us, when they call us hypocrites? We want to make our churches safe for the people in our congregations, but also for people who have been hurt and aren't sure where they can find a safe refuge. That's part of what author Amy Nordhues shared with us today. I hope you'll take something you've learned here and help your church become a light in the darkness in your community. Can you trust everyone in your church? Not always.
