2020 saw the start of two global pandemics. Covid-19, of course, but also H5N1 bird flu. The latter has swept around the world leaving millions of dead wild birds and marine mammals in its wake. It has reached everywhere – except Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. Alison Ballance has been finding out why this strain of bird flu is so deadly, and what we are doing to get ready for its possible arrival on our shores. Today, I'm speaking with Dr. Ross Andel. Dr. Andel is a gerontologist, professor, and director of the PhD program at Arizona State University. Ross has spent decades researching aging, memory, and lifestyle-related cognitive health risks. In 2023, he was elected a lifetime fellow of the American Association for his achievements in the study of risk factors for age-related cognitive decline for Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia. Dr. Andel explains how daily routines and purpose directly impact brain function and why some retirees experience faster cognitive decline than others. He shares his findings from several international studies—including his viral TED Talk, "Is Retirement Bad for Your Brain?"—and delves into why your post-retirement plan matters just as much as your financial one. In our conversation, you'll hear why those who retire from high-level managerial careers may be at greater risk for faster cognitive decline in retirement, how volunteering and pursuing new hobbies improves brain function and Dr. Andel's poignant advice for anyone who is a caretaker for a loved one that is suffering from dementia or Alzheimer's. In this podcast interview, you'll learn: Why retirement without purpose can accelerate cognitive decline—and how to avoid the retirement trap. The connection between high-engagement careers and faster post-retirement mental decline. What research says about sleep, supplements, and cardiometabolic health for brain function. How race, gender, and job complexity influence cognitive aging differently. Why routine, exercise, and meaningful engagement are essential to brain longevity. Show Notes: RetireWithPurpose.com/504

Text us is you have a question for Matt or a guest. We want to hear from you. We're excited to bring you an update on what is happening with Together with Families (TwF) since our last episode with Sarah Winograd. TwF is, in my opinion, one of the more innovative organizations working with families impacted by the child welfare system. I had the pleasure of catching up with Sarah and her partner and co-founder Andel Jones-Foster.TwF is an interesting organization for us all to learn from but not because of what they do but rather how they do it. I think what makes them unique is their ability to build relationships, to share power, and to co-design with the families they serve. Their approach leads to an organizational culture and programming that is far more relevant, responsive, and impactful. TwF is about to launch The Hub, which is their new office location and family resource center. They'll also be launching a new website, a short film about their work, and a playbook that anyone can use to learn about and apply their unique approach. We will update these notes with links as soon as the website is live. You are invited to join the Proximity Podcast Club, a community of people supporting one another through their process of becoming who they want to be in this work. We have two options to make this community accessible. We meet every Monday at 9am ET and 9am PT (12pm ET). You can join the club by filling out this form and we'll send you the meeting invite. In the Senate, there are 3 committees that have advanced legislation on PBM reforms, with leadership supporting a floor vote before the end of 2023. In the House, a consolidated bill was released in September and although there are plans for a full House vote, they are stalled due to the current issues in Congress. There are 3 key jurisdictions and proposed plans of the Senate that focused on in the session: The Finance Committee, including Medicare and Medicaid; the Health, Education, Labor, and Pension (HELP) Committee, including plans that regulate under the Employee Retirement and Income Security Act and the Affordability Care Act; and the Commerce Committee, including interstate commerce and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The Finance Committee Package includes the prohibition of spread pricing in Part D for Medicaid and Medicare managed care. The Part D rebates must also be passed through the prescription drug plan sponsors, used to lower the costs for prescription drugs with a 100% pass-through in Medicaid managed care, according to Andel.
