Webinar #228 Dr Vinod Shah - Healthcare Mission in India: Trends, Challenges, and Opportunities

Recorded on 19 December 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Vinod Shah In addressing problems, we often take a forward approach—assessing strengths and weaknesses (e.g., SWOT) before moving to strategic planning. In this session, however, I am adopting a different method: working backward from the desired impact. I have identified 10 interconnected health-related impact categories that could transform India's healthcare landscape. The audience will then explore how they can contribute to one or more of these areas. No specific model is prescribed—whether it's a mission hospital, clinic, or public-private partnership. The focus is simply on making a meaningful, positive impact on at least one or two proposed factors. Since these factors are interconnected, it will have a domino effect on the others. Although tailored for the Indian context, this reverse-engineering approach can be applied globally and fosters innovation. After coming to Christian faith from a Jain background, Dr Vinod Shah's passion is serving God through Medical Mission. He did his M.B.B.S, M.S & M.Ch from Christian Medical College, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India. He served as Executive Director of the Emmanuel Hospital Association in New Delhi; was the Head of Distance Education at CMC Vellore; and from 2014-2019 was the CEO of ICMDA. Two of these priorities are: ‘Establishing new movements' and ‘Strengthening existing movements.' This is comparable to the small church fellowships established in different regions mentioned in the Book of Acts: “Then the church(es) throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord” (Acts 9:31). In this Scripture we see that the churches were first started, then strengthened and multiplied. In this webinar, we will share some steps on establishing and strengthening new movements and what the outcome are when a fellowship is strengthened. Recorded on 21 November 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Chris Howles The 21st century world is different. But are our methods and means of world mission remaining static? Since the turn of the century we've seen unprecedented increases in global migration, huge growth in the size and reach of the majority world church (and corresponding decline in the Western church), and the continued rise in trends such as urbanisation, polycentricism, and nationalism. The gospel never changes and God's plans remain the same, but how should Christians think about global mission in light of these patterns and the many gospel possibilities that are inherent to them? Chris Howles is 'Director of Cross-Cultural Training' at Oak Hill College, London where he helps equip theological students for intercultural mission and ministries in a globalised world both in the UK and internationally. Previously, he served as 'Head of Theology' in a large Bible college on the outskirts of Kampala, Uganda for 12 years. Chris is the founder and lead of the missions-resourcing website www.fromeverynation.net which helps to equip Christians with excellent quality relevant and recent resources related to world mission, world church, and world Christianity through the monthly email 'Mission Hits'. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/ Visit https://www.fromeverynation.net for more on world mission

Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Benjamin Bronnert Walker An historical approach to faith-based healthcare can offer insights into how government, medical groups, public health authorities, international organisations, and spiritual communities interact over the long term. Historical analysis provides a vital (but often under-utilised) explanatory model for developing a coherent understanding of how and why faith-based providers have shaped health over many decades. Looking back allows us new insights into intractable debates as we forge shared paths forward. By interrogating the competing actors in a health landscape such as Ghana across a century of large-scale political, economic and cultural changes, we can explore how faith-based providers have informed what global health has become. In 2017 we developed the interactive Gospel of John that formed a bridge between printed copies and digital reading. Since then we created a keychain with a QR-code and many global partners joined us. On the QR-code you can find the full Bible in over 2,000 languages as well as in text and audio, along with videos, testimonies, Bible studies and a kids app. Today millions of these keychains are being distributed all over the world with an increasing demand. My name is Peter J.H. Pilon from the Netherlands. I am a retired family doctor since 2004. In the eighties and nineties, we smuggled Bibles behind the “iron curtain” and in the former communistic countries. In the nineties we produced the first canonic Bible for Macedonia which was finished in 1999. During those days we evangelized in Macedonia, Bulgaria and Greece. After that we worked for 10 years in our hometown Veenendaal and organized weekly “seeker services” where many found our Lord Jesus Christ. In 2009 the City Bible foundation was launched and is now a worldwide ministry producing millions of customized NT's and Bibles. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/ For more info visit https://biblefactory.org/

In the context of healthcare, we must face both and navigate the spectrum toward the renewal of all things. We will present a missiological healthcare framework in which we can labour toward renewal through understanding pathology, presence, practice with patience, partnerships, purging, power, and peace until parousia (the return). Determining death was once relatively easy - the cessation of breathing and heartbeat for over ten minutes were usually considered reliable indicators. But with the invention of the 'iron lung' in 1927 and the development of CPR in the 1960s, the determination of death has become more complex and controversial, particularly in the light of the way that the concept of brain death evolved in parallel with advances in organ transplantation. More recently, increasing use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has raised further dilemmas over the determination of circulatory death. This seminar will explore the issues involved and Christian approaches to them. Trevor Stammers was Associate Professor of Medical Ethics at St Mary's University, Twickenham until retirement in 2021. Dr David Randall chairs a webinar with Dr Ewan Goligher Physician-assisted death is increasingly advocated as a patient-centered and compassionate response to the deep suffering faced by our patients. Christianity has traditionally opposed this practice as immoral and alien to medicine, but many question this opposition or struggle to defend it or are uncertain whether individual conscientious objection should be respected. Talking about ethics and morality in medicine is challenging, especially in Western culture characterized by moral pluralism and a commitment to secularism in public moral deliberation. To what moral authority can we appeal to resolve what is right and wrong? In this lecture, a Canadian physician who has wrestled with all these questions presents the story of his own involvement in the debate over physician-assisted death in Canada and offers an approach to explaining and defending opposition to this practice, appealing both to general revelation and to the truth about the nature and value of the human person revealed in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Ewan Goligher (MD, PhD, FRCPC) is Associate Professor of Medicine and Physiology at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on life-saving interventions for patients with acute lung failure. He has published over 150 papers and several book chapters. The Qur'an is apparently perfect in every respect, unchanged and unchangeable, miraculous, superior in its Arabic language and eloquence. Finally, they claim the Qur'an is Allah's last message to humanity. It is paradoxical that in this country Päivi has been criminally charged for voicing her deeply held beliefs about marriage and gender that are based on classical Christianity. This means that the same is possible in any country. The legal process against Päivi started in 2019. She has been in court twice. The Helsinki District Court and last year the Appellate Court issued unanimous acquittals, but the Prosecutor General appealed that decision to the Supreme Court. She is ready to defend freedom of speech and faith, including the European court of Human rights if necessary. Päivi Räsänen is a medical doctor and has been a Member of the Finnish Parliament for 29 years. From 2004 to 2015, she was the chairwoman of the Finnish Christian Democrats. From June 2011 to May 2015, she was the Minister of the Interior of Finland. She lives in Riihimäki with her husband. They have 5 children and 12 grandchildren. She has written several books from a Christian perspective, for example on marriage, abortion and euthanasia. During this term, Päivi is a member of the Social Affairs and Health Committee and a deputy member of the Foreign Affairs Committee. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/

Recorded on 25 July 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Rev Christo Heiberg What is Islamic Dawa, why should we be concerned and how should the Christian church respond? Islamic Dawa is the Muslim strategy for world domination, designed back in the seventh century. The aim is to transform the whole world into the Dar al Islam (House of Islam) through both peaceful and militant means, so that sharia would apply everywhere, delivering the West and the Rest from its inherent misery. Islamism has two mighty weapons: deception and fear. Only Christ in his Gospel, and through his people, can wrest these mighty weapons from the enemy's hands and conquer the mighty Dragon. Revelation 12 predicted this battle long ago. Christo was born and raised in South Africa. He has a BA (Political Science & BD) from the University of Pretoria and subsequently a Masters in Theology from the Theological School of Kampen in the Netherlands in 2000. He met Margherita on the university campus and married her in 1987. The Lord has blessed them with four children and two grandchildren. Christo is an ordained minister of the PCA in St. Catharines, Ontario, and is involved in both pastoral and missionary work. The latter takes him to Africa twice a year, to train leadership. He has written many articles for Christian magazines and recently published his first book Ultimate Frontier — on the threat of Islamic Dawa. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/

Recorded on 18 July 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Julie Maxwell The clinical management of children who are questioning their gender or experiencing gender dysphoria is a hotly contested topic throughout the world. In 2020 NHS England commissioned an independent review of services for children with gender dysphoria. In April this year the final report was produced after almost 4 years of work and research. The findings and recommendations have sparked interest and caused significant debate internationally. This webinar will look briefly at some of the key findings and recommendations. Dr Julie Maxwell has over 20 years experience working in Community Paediatrics. She works for Lovewise, a charity which seeks to help parents, youth groups and schools by providing presentations and resources on the subjects of marriage, sex and relationships from a Christian perspective. These roles led Dr Maxwell to become interested in the management of gender dysphoria in children and over the past 8 years she has become increasingly involved in the debate both in secular clinical and Christian worlds. Dr Maxwell is particularly interested in how we as Christian medial professionals as well as churches can best support children who are questioning their gender and their families. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/

Recorded on 20 June 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar with Dr Steve Midgley Words matter. Every Christian believer knows that. The gospel comes to us as a word and with our words we can either praise or curse (James 3:9). Thinking about the way words are used in our churches, not just in our preaching, but also in our conversations is vital. The Bible urges us toward a one-anothering ministry which encourages, exhorts and builds up – speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) is a crucial part of church life. This webinar will consider how encouraging godly conversational ministry helps us to love one another and builds up the body of Christ. Steve MidgleyExecutive Director at BCUK Steve Midgley is the Executive Director of Biblical Counselling UK. He was, until 2022, the Senior Minister of Christ Church Cambridge where he continues to have a part-time role.
